@ATHFjman18 I’d hate to live in a world where Clint Eastwood is the benchmark for retirement age. Also the “ambassador” thing is clearly a vanity position they created for him as a gratuity. But knowing Nintendo, you can put any hopes for “more details” to rest, they won’t be telling us anything. Charles might, but as far as I know, he hasn’t yet.
@RareFan I've been playing the series since the first game. Overall, this one is really good. It is slightly easy, but the Dandori challenges and night missions add some needed difficulty.
My only real criticisms are that there's way too much text/chatter from the other characters, and the music is an extreme letdown compared to the rest of the series, to the point that the game feels like it's missing a little bit of its soul.
Other than that, the gameplay itself is an improvement. It feels good to play, almost addicting, and lacks a lot of the janky frustration of the previous games.
@Nintendencies This is the digital equivalent of going to a Mexican restaurant and announcing to everyone that you're not interested in Mexican food but you hope they enjoy their tacos and enchiladas.
Buying all those studios probably sounded really cool back when you could borrow money for basically free, huh? Overexpansion is never good. But doing it just before record inflation, recession, and interest rate hikes take a dump on the business world is a poison pill. Feel bad for the studios getting shut down.
I already get frustrated with getting hammered every three seconds in regular kart racers. Finding a balance so that people don't feel like item use is oppressive when there's 60 people on the track? Sounds like a difficult task.
@Vivianeat I honestly think they did it because they just thought it would be cool/fun. It was meant to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the series, for one. They were trying to give people something sort of special to mark the occasion. It's not some devious ploy to trick you into buying every game in the series, the vast majority of which came out BEFORE the timeline was made and which are no longer available to buy from Nintendo anyway.
But if they did come up with it to drive sales, I say more power to them. It's way more creative/unique than typical marketing, which usually consists of little more than commercials, web ads, and tweets.
I love the people who get like genuinely mad at the existence of "the timeline" and think that it's not worthy of being labeled "official" because it doesn't mesh with their own idea of a backstory or preference that there be NO backstory. Given how the games are 100% fictional and Nintendo are the ones that came up with them, they're entitled to add yet more fictional elements to the other fiction they've already come up with and call it a timeline. It's all just made up for the fun of it. If it's not fun to you, just ignore it.
And yeah I know that doesn't really need to be said, but the negative reaction some people have to the timeline suggests that some people might actually need to hear that.
Obviously somewhat goat looking. I actually think Rauru looks a lot like the forest spirit from Princess Mononoke. Not in his body, but in the face/ears. Given that there's a ton of other obvious references to that movie in BotW and TotK, I feel like that had to be a bit of a reference point.
First of all, are we sure he still lives with his parents? Is it possible that he and Luigi were just visiting for dinner and their parents just kept their childhood bedroom in the condition it's always been in?
Also, it takes several years of training and internship to become a licensed plumber. There's no way a teenager has his own plumbing business, complete with a van and an advertising budget and everything.
Wait, why does anyone give a sh*t about critics? We all know this movie is made for people who love video games. Movie critics are decidedly not that. They're like the most Karen/boomer segment of the population you can find.
Honestly, if you think Nintendo spent six years on this game just to give you nothing more than a glorified DLC pack to BotW, you're not thinking straight.
Eh, bad move not putting Woolly World at #2. It's a no-brainer. It's a god-tier platformer. And the music and art direction are like 300% better than they need to be. GBA Yoshi's Island should just be treated like an addendum to Yoshi's Island, because that's what it is. Frankly, I never really feel like ports and reissues should be treated as their own thing in these types of lists.
@EarthboundBenjy Completely disagree with SFZ being "plain bad." It's not very original, basically just SF64 all over again, and the graphics were nothing to write home about, but the game was extremely fun once you figured out the control scheme. Far from being the awful game people popularly say it it.
Darn, how will we ever live without the...(checks notes)... Ace Attorney Court Bot? Truly this is a watershed moment in human history, the loss of a twitter gimmick account.
@boxyguy @Would_you_kindly He's trying to make it profitable. As it stands, the company has only made a quarterly profit twice in its entire history. None of these armchair CEO's would have the slightest clue how to handle a company that's losing literally billions of dollars every single year. These things don't run on hopes and aspirations.
Not to me. But then, I still kind of feel like Wii U just came out like a year ago. Once I hit the age of 30, time just kind of started melting together into one big unrecognizable lump.
I’m still just so relieved that this movie actually looks good. The world is perfect and the animation and modeling are beautiful. The tone is as good as can be expected in modern animation. I’m really looking forward to it, and that’s a much better place to be than where I was a few months back, when we hadn’t seen anything about this movie and my darkest fears for it were still possible.
This is a great wave. 3DS Rainbow Road is a strong contender for best Mario Kart course, in my opinion. Can’t wait to finally play it on the big screen!
@MrPKOmega Do we really have to get this same comment with every single wave they release? We get the point but it’s not going to change and most people don’t care.
@Outlander999 Yeah I mean like I said, your reasoning is still based on an arbitrary preference, not because it’s functionally better or worse. It’s just the common placement on most controllers now so people are used to it, but I’ve yet to see an actual reason or compelling argument for it. What difference does it make if one stick is higher or lower, other than it’ll affect what is now muscle memory for most people?
I actually hate that most controllers have the right stick below the buttons. I wish they were all like the gamepad. I mean why is it okay to have the left stick at the top of the controller but not the right one? It’s completely arbitrary.
I also love the ergonomics of the gamepad. It’s huge and clunky, but it doesn’t leave my hands cramped like the Switch does in handheld mode.
@Crono1973 For real though, it was great! I’m glad Nintendo’s found so much success with Switch because I want this company I’ve loved since the 80’s to be healthy, but I feel as though it’s lacked a bit of playfulness and magic. Or maybe it’s just me lacking those things now.
I still love my Wii U, and maybe it's just age and life numbing my emotions over time but I have never been able to conjure up the same feeling of excitement and attachment with the Switch as I felt for the Wii U. Basically I'm just never in sync with what everyone else is into lol.
Given that this is a sequel to BotW and Revali is dead and his spirit's reason for remaining behind is now resolved, I would not expect him to have any role in this game, beyond maybe a flashback or two.
It looks as good as a 3D Sonic game can get. I'm not sure if that's a compliment or a knock, to be honest. But it doesn't look terrible. Just Sonic of the Wild, really.
@mereel Bugs have always been a thing, QA has always been a thing. If anything, QA has only gotten MORE robust over the decades, to a significant degree.
The issue is that games are also significantly more complex and data-rich than they were in whatever era you're envisioning. When you make boats longer and put more windows on them, that means you have more chances to spring a leak.
@Arminillo That's a good question. If you were to take the sound effects from any generic film or tv show and put them up against the appeal and value of a James Earl Jones, then I would say no, it's probably not as big a draw for that project as James Earl Jones.
However, when you consider just how iconic the sound effects are in the Star Wars franchise, and how ultra-iconic/important/famous the lighstaber sound by itself is, then I'd say the foley artists who worked on those films were as critical to the film's long-term success as the voice actor behind Darth Vader. Those are some extremely valuable artists to that production. Just googling "lightsaber" brings up a google suggestion for "lightsaber sound". I would honestly bet that literally billions of people have gone around imitating that sound, just as often as they'd said "Luke, I am your father!"
But more to the point, it's just my opinion that if the voice artist in this case is arguing for the fair value of those who work to produce video games, then her assertion that "I'm THE voice of Bayonetta, I should get special treatment and be paid like I'm famous!" defeats her argument of fair pay for hours worked for all parties, and her call for a boycott damages that claim even further because now she's putting her ego over the success of her peers. And her rate might seem low based on our preconceived notion that a character being famous should mean its VA is paid like they themselves are famous, but it's a good standard rate for the amount of voice work she was going to be doing.
Should she get some small piece of the royalties based on her contribution? I think that would have been an incredibly nice and appropriate token of appreciation by Platinum, but that would have been an extremely rare perk and she shouldn't have expected it. VA's almost never get that. Especially when dealing with Japanese studios, who like to keep their budgets as buttoned up as possible and aren't known for gestures like that.
”Taylor…has a much more evident claim on the character than, say, an animator who worked on her transformations, or the artist who textured her infamous pistol shoes.”
I wouldn’t think that. The devs working behind the scenes on things like this toil away on the character far longer than a voice artist, hate to say it. Her job is highly visible but is, to put it bluntly, the briefest and easiest link in the chain when it comes to producing a video game.
Should the actors be paid more, maybe get royalties? Perhaps. Probably. But calling for boycotts on the work of hundreds of other people not long before release just because you feel personally slighted just seems a bit childish to me. Just my take though, as a software developer who has worked on video games in the past.
@somebread I mean, Disney has been doing this with their animated movies literally since the 1930's and no one seems to mind that.
