@WallyWest What if he pulled a gun or a knife and tried to kill the cops or someone else? It goes without saying that if the cops shot someone literally for no reason other than petty theft then yes, that's very bad. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people are jumping to the conclusion that the cops shot the guy just for fun.
@NintendoEternity I guess I should clarify that I mean anyone with a Switch who didn't play it on Wii U, which at this point is probably like 100 million people.
”Star Fox Zero managed only 0.44m copies sold. Oh, and the fact that it used motion controls on the Wii U GamePad, a choice that basically no one enjoyed.”
That’s not true. I know of plenty of people who loved it, myself included.
Also, the fact that Tropical Freeze has sold so few copies is baffling. It’s easily one of the best platformers ever made, let alone one of the best DKC games. Anyone with a Switch that hasn’t bought that game is only hurting themself.
@BreathingMiit At this rate, the response you gave is itself a meme. A cliched response that doesn't actually address the core issues with your philosophy and instead seeks to excuse it with a terse dismissal that you hope will act as a silver bullet to my argument but just makes yours seem trite.
@BreathingMiit The entire industry exists because of capitalism/capitalistic practices. If you don't like it, you should probably start weaning yourself off of it. Let me know how that goes. But maybe don't do it through this for-profit/capitalistic site.
The minimum wage claim isn't exactly true. For one, Seattle's minimum wage is actually flexible based on the type of employment/payment, and it can go as low as $15.75/hour. But Nintendo isn't in Seattle, so that's not exactly relevant. I don't know if Redmond has their own minimum wage requirements, but in the state of Washington minimum wage for all workers is $14.49/hour, so they're a good deal over WA minimum.
What really sucks is if they're making minimum wage AND paying union dues while receiving no benefits from the union, which brings their total pay to below minimum wage, but no one has a problem with that.
And yeah it really sucks but play testers are almost always contract workers and they are almost always at the very bottom of the pecking order. It's what happens when your position is considered the lowest-skilled in the development pipeline.
So basically no one actually knows because the stated founding years were given long after the fact by people not actually involved with the founding? Oh well. Old company is old.
Never a bad thing to have good games just show up out of nowhere and not have to go through the agony of anticipation that lasts so long you’re bored with the game before it even comes out. And for $5? Hallelujah.
@NEStalgia Literally just pointing out the fact that trademarks are considered adjectives so your statement was incorrect. And that IS how the law regards them. And no, company names aren't necessarily part of the conversation on trademarks. You can register your company as any name you want, regardless of whether that name matches or represents a given trademarked brand operated by your company.
"So, with such a trademark potentially falling into the public domain back then, Sega could have legally called their console: The "Nintendo Saturn", or Sony could have called their console: The Nintendo Play Station"
I think that's actually backwards. The generic use case would probably be more like the "Sega Nintendo" or "Sony Nintendo System," or something along those lines. Putting "Nintendo" first would not be generic, it would still specify the manufacturer as being Nintendo.
@ModdedInkling Yeah well, I'm of the opinion that the best/only way to learn those skills is to play without any assistance and practice until you're proficient. No automatic aids are going to help you as much as just knowing the basics will.
@ModdedInkling You lost to someone using smart steering? That's odd. Smart steering doesn't really help you win, it's designed to keep small children from driving off the track and smashing into the walls the entire time. It doesn't take the most efficient routes, doesn't steer perfectly, and it prevents you from taking shortcuts. It isn't good at drafting/passing, and doesn't drift corners for you, which is a huge part of building/maintaining speed.
It is very easy to beat people using smart steering if you have even the slightest clue what you're doing. You just have to learn a few shortcuts and drive good racing lines. I've literally LOST a race or two because I didn't realize smart steering was turned on until it was too late.
No offense to Geoff Keighley, he seems like a really nice guy. But his show is dogs**t and should not be considered a valid replacement for E3, as lame as E3 has become in recent years.
@Baker1000 Yeah pretty much. Which makes sense, but as someone that would still be buying new 3DS games to this day, it felt like a mild slap in the face to get the shaft on 3D for those last few games.
@Bubsy The background it's sitting on is neo-Memphis, but the color scheme of the system itself isn't necessarily attached to just that art style. That said, neo-Memphis gets utilized often in the vaporwave world, so they're not exactly mutually exclusive.
@Baker1000 You're right! I recently got bored and decided to buy Kirby's Epic Yarn on 3DS and as much as I love that game in any form, it will never cease to disappoint me that it's not 3D at all. That game would be absolutely perfect in 3D.
If history is unkind to 3DS, then in my opinion history is missing the point of gaming and the devices that facilitate it. The point, or at least one of the chief ones, is to have fun. The 3DS takes that ethos and unapologetically runs with it to a place where no other mainstream system has really gone. It delighted by being different and presenting as a plaything, contrasting with its competition, which attempted to appear more "serious."
If we tied every game and system to future-proofing and preservation considerations, then video games would become a pretty stale prospect in a lot of ways. And if we're going to pare gaming down to what's "essential" and necessary, then that would leave us with very little, because gaming itself isn't actually essential. It's a frivolous pursuit, in the grand scheme of things. But the "gimmicks" some gamers like to disparage are worth it if they serve their purpose of making even one person happy. And the 3DS's core gimmick made a lot of people really happy.
So if some games journalists look back on 3DS and choose to write it off as needless and quaint, then they're not grasping why perhaps the greatest portion of players choose to invest in video games as a pastime in the first place.
I'm a tiny bit split on this sort of thing. On one hand, games as old and well known as the NES Zeldas are so classic and beloved that direct references are inevitable, and it's cool if it directs new eyes to these old games. But on the other hand, a small part of me kind of sees "rip-off" accusations as warranted.
But oh well, it's a good game and parody is a legitimate approach. And it's clear a lot of love and original creativity went into it. So ultimately I approve.
I personally prefer anything ice related. Turning enemies into ice cubes and then kicking them across the level never gets old, and I've been doing it for decades so that says a lot.
A pause function would be a nice standard. Oh wait, it already is, minus like one specific franchise that for some reason thinks it's doing some revolutionary thing by excluding it.
@nessisonett You’re right, Nintendo should keep the 3DS eShop up and running for as long as it takes this person to finally release their shovelware dungeon crawler so the four people who would have bought it have the opportunity to realize they sold their 3DS’s five years ago and thus end up not buying the game after all. Like seriously is this satire?
@Oish Ignore him, he's just our resident depressive who feels obliged to let everyone know how terrible everything about this existence, including everything Nintendo ever does, is.
@Fizza I thought it was the other way around. I remember everyone, including the reviewers, saying 3D World was like the most fun they'd ever had and then a few years later everyone started acting like they never said that and that it was the worst Mario game ever.
@Rorotendo Don’t hold your breath. Microsoft has no need to, since you can already play Xbox games on almost any device, and Sony really has nowhere to fit itself into the market. That’s even more true now than it was when they abandoned the Vita. The most you’ll see is Steam Deck clones that let you do the same thing it does.
@Not_Soos Cool. I'm literally just pointing out that you say you don't care at all but you act as though you care a lot. Not much to that part of my comment. As for the rest of it, I think it explains itself. You seemed to not understand why they would leave, and I told you why they would leave. The end.
@Ogbert Have you never had your eyes dilated for an eye exam? It's kind of standard practice these days, here in the US. As for the "rods" thing, I don't know but maybe he's talking about an ERG test? They'll put an electrode on your eye and they use devices to hold your eyelids open.
@ClamDown I would say that if Nintendo fully explained the details of the tests to the people who were going to participate and had them sign declarations stating they understood what they were going to be doing, then yeah, this is kind of standard for this type of product.
Do you think they don't do deep optical tests for sets like Oculus or VIVE? You're making a product that could conceivably blind people. You're going to need to make sure it's not going to do that or cause other harm. But it's silly to assume that anyone who submits to these tests is required to do them. There's no shortage of people willing to submit to weird stuff for money.
@Not_Soos You sure seem to care an awful lot for someone who professes to not care about this. But as others have said, Smash is enormous and the time is clearly right for Nintendo to build their own tournament, as plenty of other publishers have done with their competitive games.
EVO is not the be-all and end-all of fighting game esports. It’s entirely possible for a game as big as Smash to stand on its own without Nintendo having to directly share its revenue with their biggest rival in the entire industry.
Please, I’m the REAL Nintendo generation. Yeah we played a lot of games but my generation still played outside a ton. The kids he’s talking about are the AppStore generation, and I refuse to be conflated with them.
Then again, my brother in law is that age group and he just completed like six years with the Marines, sooo.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but I legitimately do not like this style. I look at the beautifully rendered backgrounds and all the painstaking detail that went into them, and I desperately want the characters to match that effort and fit in with that style.
I like 2D pixel sprites, but I would rather see them in 2D pixel games. I know people like the novelty of the contrast it creates to stick them in gorgeous 3D settings, but for me it just makes no sense and it feels like a waste. I would buy just about any game that has a world in this style AND characters that actually belong in that world.
@mikegamer Is that actually how you talk in real life? Like you would call someone a "Nintendo shill" and not feel an overwhelming sense of cringe at yourself? Honest question.
@jikflet You don't have to be constantly online to play games on Switch Online. I think you just need to go online with it like once a week. In between those check-ins, you have access to everything.
