Re: Feature: Our Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Memories, In Infographic Form

Yeah I'm calling foul on Netflix. I honestly don't know if I ever used it more than once just to see how functional it was and yet it's in my top 3. And I'm seeing a ton of people online saying essentially the exact same thing. So either there's some glitch in these numbers or Netflix was booting itself in the background and we had no idea.

@ForestBlue Probably. I usually ignore people, but once I start seeing the "Nintendo defense force!!!!" line on this, a Nintendo-specific site, I become deeply annoyed by the sheer unawareness it exhibits. It's bad enough to have to contend with it on twitter and general gaming sites, but it would be nice if we could have this one place that's specifically labeled for us.

But oh well, the web is trashy like that. Every space eventually attracts the attention of people that want to turn it into a landfill.

@BloodNinja It's a Nintendo site! Seriously, why is it so hard for some people to understand how this works?? Would you go on a site called Chocolate Life and talk crap about chocolate and then act all indignant when people start defending chocolate? That would make you a troll. It's obvious.

What you're doing is the internet equivalent of lighting a building on fire and then rolling your eyes as the fire department shows up. "Oh look, it's the anti-fire brigade, yet again. FIGURES."

Re: Nintendo Says It Won't Compete With Microsoft And Sony In An Acquisitions Arms Race

@BloodNinja Why would we put it next to Wii U sales? It wasn't made next to Wii U. That was five years ago, and it's a brief period flanked by two 100-million-selling home consoles, bolstered by overlap of extremely hot dedicated handhelds, all wrapped up with record smashing software sales.

And that's to say nothing about their side initiatives like Pokemon GO, their parks in Universal, and their move back into film. They're an uncommonly healthy business in an industry where studios fail left and right, the most cash-rich company in Japan, and one of the most successful gaming companies ever. I think they've earned the right to comment on their own path to success.

Also, if Nintendo is your "least favorite company," then it makes zero sense for you to be spending your valuable time on a Nintendo fan site.

Re: Soapbox: Don't Cheer For Corporate Takeovers - It's Not A Game

@Tasuki Nintendo already owns Retro. And there is a humongous difference between Nintendo buying a studio worth a couple hundred million dollars and one of the largest companies in the industry buying up several of the other largest companies in the industry. The term "monopoly" isn't just a loosely-defined pejorative, it's a specific term with known dimensions, and it definitely isn't out of reach in this conversation.

Re: Random: Artwork In Retro Japanese Magazine Depicts Link As A Female

BAN

@Chimaj You seem super fun. Really glad the world is so full of people like you these days.

To prove the short-sightedness of your hot take, look no further than the Legend of Zelda cartoon from the 80's, which portrays the direct inverse of this supposedly sexualized female Link: a stereotypical dim-witted male chauvinist who cares only about eating meat, seeking violent encounters, and sexually pursuing Zelda. So yeah, it exists. But it's best to just lighten up and stop looking for hills to die on over cartoon depictions of video game characters. Life is too short to deprive yourself and everyone around you of the ability to enjoy light-hearted things that infract upon your personal sense of justice.

I thought the world would outgrow this paranoia, but bizarrely you still see people freaking out over "video game addiction" and the unsavory influences of video games to this very day. Never mind the brain-numbing effects most people suffer from flipping through social media and vegging in front of the tv for hours every day, or the rage they willingly foster by fighting strangers on twitter etc on the regular.

Re: Devs Speak Out Against Crunch Culture At LEGO Star Wars Developer TT Games

BAN

@Yorumi Yup. Polygon aren’t so much games journalists as they are social activists. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kernel of truth here, because frankly game development in general is a harsh endeavor and most studios suffer from that to some degree, but I’m sure it’s not being fairly represented by outlets like polygon, kotaku etc.

Re: Playtonic Announces Tencent Investment And Major Expansion Plans

@Einherjar I never said China weren’t affected by covid, but they’re owners of a majority stake in the genesis of it. And they haven’t been held accountable for it by anyone. And more infuriating than that is the breathless defending western leftists provide them for it, labeling anyone willing to so much as question China’s role in covid a racist/xenophobe/Chinaphobe.

But you’re right. We live in insane times, where the side people take is the one that makes the most noise, and history and morality are completely secondary to fitting in and feeling empowered by everyone that’s on the same side as you.

Re: Playtonic Announces Tencent Investment And Major Expansion Plans

BAN

@Einherjar Yep. I’m constantly baffled by the mental gymnastics people of progressive persuasions put themselves through to reach the conclusion that China deserves to be defended by them. Beyond their human rights atrocities, this country is having its way with the environment, and they’re responsible for the pandemic we’ve all been suffering through, which has killed millions of people and ruined economies.

Idk maybe it just comes down to communism. A lot of people really seem to think it’s cool these days and will defend it no matter what.

@thinkhector A: If you think corporations “captured” government, then it definitely happened much longer ago than the 1990’s. B: Consumerism has been the main thrust of culture since the industrial revolution. And C: Decades pretty much never feel distinct when we’ve just barely left them behind, but if anything has homogenized popular culture since the 90’s, it’s been the advent of the internet and rapid centralization of web culture.

Re: HBO's '8-Bit Christmas' Is Giving The NES Power Glove Another Shot At Movie Glory

@masterLEON I feel your pain. When we got the SNES, my parents gave our sometimes-malfunctioning NES, the zapper, the box it came in, and all its games to some relatives, who probably sold it to buy meth instead of giving it to their kids like they were supposed to. I protested pretty hard but they said I didn't need it and it was broken anyway.

Now that I know that the problem was probably just worn out springs on the pin connector, I wish I would have hidden the thing so they couldn't give it away! Would have been better to take the punishment and keep the system. And all those sweet, sweet games.

And man, to own a grey zapper and an original R.O.B.! That would be so cool. I feel cool just for owning a R.O.B. amiibo, owning the real thing would be another dimension of rad.

@CharlieGirl I think people take this topic too seriously. The vast majority of media out there is pretty crappy and plays on cheap emotional button-pushing of one type or another to hook people. But if it makes people happy, it's doing its job, which is to provide escape. Nothing wrong with that. And if nostalgia gives someone relief from the drudgery of life, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Something doesn't have to be comparable to Shakespeare to be valid.
