Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Apparently Has The Biggest File Size Of Any First-Party Switch Release

Austrian

@5th313ment
" They dont care what the fans want or think, ever. And they overcharge for everything. ......Charging a ton for the crappy expansion pack that is 1/16th of the deal that Microsoft and Sony offer."

aha...
You mean the Nintendo that resurrected IPs (Sin & Punishment , Fatal Frame etc) of super-niche games, co-financed the complete development circle and even published them, willfully knowing that they could never possibly make a dime?

The Nintendo that re(!)introduced slowdown with an update in Starfox 64 on the Wii Virtual Console because "some fans wrote them it doesn't feel like the N64 one"?

and what is a "crappy expansion pack"?
If you mean the Online Expansion pack I don't agree with you.
I pay a whoopin 3.3(!) euros a month for ~80 NES-, over 60 SNES-, 18 N64-, 11 GBA-, 9 GB- and 30ish Mega Drive games; a quadzillion of new Mario Kart 8 tracks/characters, Animal Crossing Happy Home Paradise and the complete Splatoon 2 Octo expansion pack.
Alone the NES and SNES games offer hundrets of hours of gameplay and include some of the best RPGs, Act-Advs and Jump'n Runs ever made.
Plus you can play them anywhere you want.
for hardly 3.5 euros a month.
Sorry but I can't see the "crappy" or "expensive" in this offering.

Re: Soapbox: Xenoblade Chronicles X's Influence Is Bigger Than You Think

Austrian

I remember back when the game was released some western devs said it's absolutly mindblowing how Monolith could make such a huge completely seamless(!) world on such an "underpowered" console as the WiiU.
There is not a single loading screen in the open world. You can climb in your mech and fly all the way from Cauldros to the Blade base entrance in New LA in one go. At constant 30fps.

Xeno X and Breath of the Wild are tech-marvels on the WiiU.

Re: Liam Hemsworth To Replace Henry Cavill In Witcher's Netflix Series

Austrian

@Anachronism

While I agree with you I think even-more-handsome guy Hemsworth isn't the right choice either.

I always thought U.S. actor Vigor Mortensen (played also Aragorn in Lord of the Rings) would have been a great choice as Gerald. In LotR he is basicely the spitting image of a "Gerald".

Too bad he is (way) too old now

Re: Video: NieR:Automata For Nintendo Switch Gets A New Trailer

Austrian

why shouldn't it run/look decently on switch anyway?
It wasn't exactly a tech marvel or something on other hardware; just a good(in an "average" good way) looking and running game.

The switch is able to run Witcher 3 and Xenoblade (2+)3, games that are both looking better than Nier.

Re: Skyrim Anniversary Edition Has Been Rated For Nintendo Switch (Again)

Austrian

I have to admit that I thought my copy of skyrim on ps3 was broken/faulty first time I played the game.
I couldn't believe how bad the (combat) controls are. I even brought it back to the store where some clerk explained to me that the game indeed controls that bad.
I needed at least 10h on switch to get used to them.
especially close combat is fundamentally broken.

Re: Video: YouTuber's Switch OLED Screen Still Standing After 7,000 Hours

Austrian

@Arawn93
well, he/she is kinda right.
OLED doesn't suffer from "traditional" burn-in like plasma or CRTs.
The LEDs of OLED screens get 'old' over time(=use) and keep on losing brightness with every minute they are in operation.
The brighter a LED has to light up in it's life, the sooner it will get dimmer. This can lead to a burn-in like scenario.
Now LEDs do not burn out like bulbs, they just get dimmer over time. That's a physical fact which cannot be prevented. Once the luminous flux reaches 50% a LED can be considered as 'dead'.
Now we are talking here about 50.000+ hours of heavy use.
Samsung(the switch OLED screen manufacturer), Sharp etc make excellent screens though which can reach an extraordinary long life without any hint of "burn-in".
They use software which constantly measures the luminous flux of all LEDs in the OLED screen and will dynamically lower the light output (of all LEDs) to the value of the 'most worn' LED.
So you probably will never notice a burned-in image but only that your screen gets dimmer and dimmer over time.

Re: GAME's 'Home Arcade' Range Lets You Build The Arcade Of Your Dreams

Austrian

I'm planning to build my own Switch Arcade cabinet. It should be as simple as possible but truely a fuel size cabinet (The 1ups are not btw). You simply slide your switch into a dock and that's it. basicely plug & play.
I still have the schematics of our cabinet repair service in my head (we used to run an arcade games distribution business in the 80s and 90s). So the "shell" shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm not sure about the arcade sticks though. I love the Switch Hori Sticks but they are too small for a fullsize cabinet.
Maybe the switch Hori Hayabusas

Re: Don't Use Your Switch In Temperatures Exceeding 35C, Warns Nintendo

Austrian

The main "problem" is playing the switch docked at high heat for LONG sessions. It can get a little toasty then.
Make sure you open that stupid gate/hinge on the back side of the dock which covers the ports/cables. It improves air flow a lot.
I have regulary 40°C+ in my apartment in summer and my switch only shut down once or twice due to internal heat warning.
Now, when it's really baking in my home, I turn on a little PC fan (which I salvaged from a scrap yard PC) which blows directly on the (open) hinge/gate area.
This reduces the internal heat of the docked switch dramatically.
I double checked it with a flir cam and internal needle probes.
You can even "hear" the heat-reduction as the switch fan stops going completley nuts.
I guess, the (much stronger) PC fan gets rid of the internal heat way faster; especially if you point it directly to the 'intake' (the hole next to the usb ports) of the the dock's cooling system.

Re: Best Free Switch Games - Download And Play Right Now

Austrian

I downloaded the free game "Cover Fire: Offline Shooter" recently on my switch.
Besides the extremely stupid name and the somehow bad(gamecube-level) graphics, this is a surprisingly fun, long and "deep" arcade-shooter, best described as a mixture between 'Time Crisis' and 'Ghost Squad' (arcade&wii) and with tons of (free) content and game modes(zombie mode, sniper mode etc etc).
Thanks to "wait to play" (which you can choose instead of "pay to play") it is also perfect for daily 20-30min sessions.
Loading times are also not too long.

Recommended. I mean, it's free anyway

edit: I might add that I'm confused that Vigor isn't on that list. That's a pretty great free open world game which also looks absolut bonkers (in a good way) at times.

Re: Flashback Returns In Long-Awaited Sequel On Switch This Winter

Austrian

Has anyone here the switch port of the first flashback?

I encountered a wierd bug in the very first level.
There is an item missing which I suppose to pick up to proceed.
maybe 10-15min in the game.
I deleted the game/saves and redownloaded it several times and the bug is still here.
I even played my original snes cartridge next to the switch version because I thought I was just too stupid

Re: The Aya Neo Air Is An OLED-Packing Handheld That Can Run Cyberpunk 2077 And GTA V

Austrian

As long as Nintendo has/develops their own exclusive games, Nintendo has nothing to worry about.
Every single nintendo title is pretty much an instant multi-million seller that keeps its strong sales over years(!).
What other dev can say that?
It's still the software that sells hardware (duh).
Nintendo is pretty much the "best" developer in the world. Their games stand for quality and fun for the whole(!) family. People know that.

Re: Gallery: Brand New Screenshots Of Sonic Origins, Out On Switch This June

Austrian

I don't think you should (or can) compare this collection with the Mario collection.
The Mario 3D Collection (emulation or not) contains 3 massive games which are more full blown adventures with platforming with literally hundret of hours of gameplay.
I really do not think 59$/€ is too much for three of the highest rated games ever on one cartridge.

Re: Quake Update Adds New Horde Mode Levels And Accessibility Options

Austrian

@SoManyHaveDied
Quake lives mostly of it's (amazing) engine but the "rest" is just average at best (for a FPS).
It feels more like a massive tech demo.
Stupid (and butt-ugly designed) enemies, weapons lack a serious amount of 'punch' and (the worst IMO) next to no feedback from hit enemies.
Don't get me wrong, it was cool to see a full-3D FPS like Quake running 26 years ago but even that 'novelty' was only shortlived.
The (IMO!!) way better Turok for N64 came a half year later.
