Japan, like many regions at the moment, is working its way through a merciless ongoing heatwave. Just last week, the capital of Tokyo experienced daily temperatures exceeding 95 degrees Fahrenheit (about 35 Celsius), and although temperatures have dipped slightly this week, the region is still sweltering in unusually extreme heat.
As such, Nintendo has issued a warning to its Japanese audience against using the Nintendo Switch in high temperatures, stating that doing to will increase the internal temperature of the machine. It also warns against blocking the air intake and exhaust vents, as this will exacerbate the increase in internal heat.
Roughly translated, the tweet states:
Playing a Nintendo Switch in a high temperature area can cause the temperature of the console to rise. Please use the console in areas between 5 ~ 35°C (41 ~ 95°F).
Additionally, blocking the air intake and exhaust vents can cause the console to heat up. Please allow for good ventilation around these vents.
Of course, while Nintendo has addressed its native Japan with this particular tweet, we reckon folks the world over would do well to heed its warning! It seems many regions across the globe are currently experiencing higher temperatures than usual at the moment, so it's incredibly important that you keep your Switches safe! Or, you know, you could use it as an excuse to buy the new Splatoon 3 OLED Model... Just sayin'.
Are you experiencing extreme heat in your area right now? What are you doing to stay cool? Let us know!

We need a different type of Nintendo fan...
Yeah if the heatwave comes to my country our appartement will again go up to 36C degrees inside...
Airco is a not a option (nope this ain't the US) and opening windows cools it down, otherwise it would be even hotter.
Anyhow as for the Switch, played it few years ago at such heat, it depends what you play on how hot it gets, but in a good ventilated spot like mine is, it could be fine.
I worry more about my phone, more power hungry ones don't like thid heat more than the Switch (which at least has a fan)
And then there is my PC... open airflow case does wonders, but I think I need my "summer fan profile" again when heat comes here.
Gotta love climate change huh, even 10 years ago heatwaves were a rarity in my country, meanwhile in the past 5 years (not counting 2022) we had 4 years of them.
(not that I complain, 36 degrees inside is nothing comared to how it gets in other countries nowdays)
I live in Queensland Australia where it regularly goes over 35° Celsius in summer and we don't get these warnings.
My Switch hasn't melted yet in those temperatures, unfortunately I do
😜
Here in Bremen, Germany , the summer was pretty shy for the last weeks. They said it is going to get warmer these days and they seem to be right. It is a warm day. Generally I like it , when it is warm and sunny.
The fan of my Switch sometimes starts to get really loud, mostly when I start her in handheld mode. It got better since I turn her off , instead of leaving her in standby.
Good luck with the (health) of your Switches and enjoy the summer.
35ºC?!
You've obviously never been to Australia in the summer... or to the Middle East.
I live in Surabaya, East Java and the weather here pretty weird during this month. Sometimes quick raining in the morning, sometimes cloudy, sometimes less cloudy but still more than 30 degree Celcius.
@Jhena here in Hamburg its always raining so not soo worried about the heat ^^
I currently live in Maryland where its been hovering around 85⁰f/30⁰c which is pleasant for me.
That being said, I'm from Texas and most of my family lives there currently. Texas is on its own power grid from the rest of the country, and when everyone has their AC cranked up there have been mass power-outtages.
Its been around 105⁰f/40⁰c over there lately, and my mom's AC just died. We've been trying to get her a new one, but twice now the order has been canceled due to low inventory. I love my native state, but I frequently find new reasons to be glad that I left.
I’m from Scotland so I literally never have this problem 🙃
But I thought climate change was just a Chinese hoax?
@Rayquaza2510 behave, heatwaves tend to happen a lot during in summer. Though I wasn’t born, there the UK had a heatwave of six weeks back in 1976, even beer had run out for the pubs. We’ve had summers which have practically been rain and more rain, this is what summer should be like
It's mostly an American hoax. Wheater is manipulated by chemicals and metals in higher atmoshere. It's called "geo-enigineering".
Make sure tot drink lots of water and take it easy.
It's okay, the Switch Pro will be playable even in an active volcano.
I find this all to be common sense when it comes to lithium ion rechargeable batteries and electronic equipment, but not everyone knows how to baby their tech. XD This is good advice.
@Silly_G Not comparable. By that same statement, hotter countries shouldn't complain when they're hitting 10 degrees in winter as the UK regularly sees zero with no complaints.
The UK (I assume they're from) is absolutely not built for hot weather, the population aren't used to it and there's little we can do aside from set up crappy fans that don't do all that much. Anything more than that isn't cost effective as we don't get enough heat to really justify throwing the money at more effective means. If I bought an air conditioner that would actually be effective, it would probably take the next 20 years to actually get my moneys worth out of it with it being useless for about 50 weeks of the year.
It's why for example houses in the UK are built with central heating whilst, I dunno, Texas houses have air conditioning. There's various other examples but that's an easy one that should point out a massive difference...Especially when it's common people from these hotter areas don't even know what central heating is.
It's just like how when it snows here it shuts everything down. We very rarely get snow so we're not going to keep a set of snow tyres in the garage when we might not need them for 10 years.
Having a day off the Switch and enjoying the weather seems a better idea.
Thank goodness I don't live in my hometown of Monclova in Mexico, days of 36°C up to 40°C are a common occurrence over there. Even up to 45°C during heat waves, like what happened last May.
I wasn't planning on using the system much during such heat anyway. Thankfully it's not quite up to those temperatures yet but I do hope for some more rain soon.
Next they'll be telling people not to leave it in the oven 🤣🤣
@Tao Texas also has central heating. I live in Texas about an hour southeast of Dallas.
Last summer this probably would have been a problem (huge heatwave, up to 40c in some parts of Canada), but seems like this summer should be ok. Wait, i just checked, its supposed to be 30c today….
Wish I knew this last summer, I played mine under the covers at around 90 degrees. And laughed over the fan going hard-core.
@Tao
of course it is comparable. you are forgetting that people still have to go/live/work outside, even though there is AC inside some places. 🙂
Here in Tulsa, its been well over a hundred°F every day for at least a couple weeks. it gets that hot here every year generally, but not for this long, particularly without rain. Fun times we live in! 😓
ps- yeah theres AC in this country. im a carpenter, so i spend half my time working in an un AC'd shop, and the other half either outside or on a job site with no AC.
Here from Dubai. Now we have a temperature of above 40 degree Celsius. Hence don't carry my switch around while commuting. Home gaming only nowadays
Have to immediately go look at Google to see what that number is for something the US can understand. 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
So don't go play the Switch outside on a hot summer day, is what you're saying.
I'll be outside playing Earthbound on the beach, getting a healthy tan on the palms of my hands, cuz I'm a tanning pro
Only five years too late for climates like Australia and US, where it frequently reaches +35C!
@Link-Hero yup
@Silly_G
Or the place where I live. Where it’s a wonderful 35 to 40c with about 100% humidity.
I drown in my own sweat when I work outside.
Living in a place that has temps between 35C and 39C for about half of the year, that's some tough advice to follow.
The main "problem" is playing the switch docked at high heat for LONG sessions. It can get a little toasty then.
Make sure you open that stupid gate/hinge on the back side of the dock which covers the ports/cables. It improves air flow a lot.
I have regulary 40°C+ in my apartment in summer and my switch only shut down once or twice due to internal heat warning.
Now, when it's really baking in my home, I turn on a little PC fan (which I salvaged from a scrap yard PC) which blows directly on the (open) hinge/gate area.
This reduces the internal heat of the docked switch dramatically.
I double checked it with a flir cam and internal needle probes.
You can even "hear" the heat-reduction as the switch fan stops going completley nuts.
I guess, the (much stronger) PC fan gets rid of the internal heat way faster; especially if you point it directly to the 'intake' (the hole next to the usb ports) of the the dock's cooling system.
why is this the first time we are hearing about this?
I heard if you boot up Ice Climbers your Switch automatically cools down... because you turn it off due to disappointment.
... Wun can only hope.
Just found out I shouldn't be playing my Switch here in Rio de Janeiro, where summers are easily 40°C+. Never had a problem, been playing since 2017.
Darn it, now I won’t be able to play my switch outside while everybody else is riding horses.( my family does rodeo)
But being serious, the weather in utah sucks right now. To finish practicing we are pushing dark every night, because the horses can’t handle the heat otherwise. I love summer, but the heat is unbearable.
I once overheated the Nintendo Switch. But it really isn't an issue, the system itself was aware of the problem and shut itself off automatically. So, there is some built safety features to deal with over heating.
Whaaaat??? Oh my, where I live is too hot in spring and summer. Around 40C.
@Uska u were under the covers when it was 90 degrees? Why? That's like a punishment for something, right, lol?
@Link-Hero mostly from China & India, to be fair. The countries with the highest ESG scores have the most blackouts...
@kevin74 i live 2 hours east of Dallas. I don't know anyone without central heating & air conditioning both, either.
@twztid13 its a battle of endurance.
Hi.
Keep nintendo 3ds alive.
And this is just another reason why central air conditioning should be standard in most houses worldwide like it is here in the U.S.
I live in the Philippines, and I know I live in one of the hottest countries in Asia, but I'm surprised to see the UK of all places being hotter than the Philippines right now.
