RedDeerGames and developer Dev9k have announced that futuristic, romantic visual novel meets racing game Nirvana is coming out on Nintendo Switch pretty soon — tomorrow, 6th May!
Nirvana is a new version of 2020's Nirvana: Pilot Yume but without some of the original game's more steamy, saucy scenes. It's a tribute to classic DOS-era racing games with a story-driven twist, but, sorry, you pop high-speed futuristic racing in front of us, and we can't help but think of F-Zero. Imagine a dating game with Captain Falcon...
The low-poly visuals, the "metal wave" music, and the anime-style art reminds us of some of our favourite mecha and space anime shows from the '80s, so we're more than intrigued!
Here's what you need to know about Nirvana, straight from RedDeerGames' PR blurb:
Jump to 3080, experience romances, and compete in high-speed races! All this in the atmosphere of a synth-wave soundtrack!
Nirvana is a new version of an award-winning Nirvana: Pilot Yume. This edition is tailored to the preferences of players who love the retro vibes and deep stories rather than explicit content. Of course, you can still fall in love!
80s SCI-FI NOSTALGIA
Nirvana is filled with a retro sci-fi anime vibe - neon lights, beautiful women, and ultra-fast spaceships. It's also an ode to classic racing games from the DOS era combined with an engaging visual novel!
In addition to racing on 10 retro-themed, low poly tracks there are many decisions to make in the game, with 5 different story endings!
WELCOME TO 3080
Great Ultrathought Race of the Universe (G.U.R.U for short) is where each Orbital City competes to resolve conflicts by racing down a dangerous interplanetary track.
You play as a retired Eye - a guide of Nirvana Pilots. In the past, a tragedy took away your will to act - you lost your beloved through a mistake.
The young pilot Yume asks for your help, however, memories come crashing back... Will you be able to overcome the pain and redeem your sins?
PSYCHEDELIC METAL WAVE TUNES
The pumping music composed by Retröxx will help you overcome speed barriers. Vibe through catchy tracks with a retro vibe and relive 80s nostalgia!
KEY FEATURES:
- Compete in ultra-fast races inspired by classic arcade games
- Test your skills in arcade mode where you focus only on racing
- Experience a story full of romance inspired by 80s sci-fi and anime
- 10+1 Space races set in retro-themed, low poly environments

Strap in and get ready for a unique sci-fi love adventure when Nirvana releases tomorrow, 6th May, on the Switch eShop. The game will usually cost $6.99, but as part of a promotional launch price, it will be reduced to $1.99 for a limited time!

Wow somebody is finally listening to what the fans really want.
So they released the same game with some content cut out? Does the new version come with anything extra over the original version?
Digging the art style combination between the 2D and 3D here!
I'm not sure I'd appreciate this sort of this getting like, super steamy, but who knows, I didn't play the original. ^^
@xanderten50
This looks considerably more polished than the original, judging from screenshots alone, but I really couldn't say for sure. :x
By "classic racing games from the DOS era" they mean Skyroads!
Is there an online racing mode, or at least online leaderboards?
why does this "80s anime" look like modern OCs?
@Pod For me it look the same as Pilot Nirvana ...
For $2 I might give it a shot.
One thing most antigrav racers do wrong is the tight controls and expansive but interesting tracks f-zero had.
Does anybody remember Xtreme-G ? Those were a blast. There was also some racing game on playstation I think where the characters basically had rollerblades on all 4 limbs and we're themselves the vehicle... I can't recall what it was.
@tyranny_life ok after watching the video I'll probably pass. The racing aspect looks like it would be fun for about 2 minutes maximum, or I was a kid again and had never played anything else.
@xanderten50 They releasing the same game again, only now it's censored. This is the scumiest thing ever to do -_-
@premko1 It's the same game. Publisher is also the same. The only difference is the name and that this one is rated TEEN instead of M.
@xanderten50 from comparing the eShop pages, it looks like this version of the game has one more story path (5 instead of 4). This version is also over triple the size of the original and costs $2 more (without the launch day sale). I can't see any other obvious changes though
Feels too much like a tech demo to me, if it goes for bargain price I may bite though.
So basically, a version without the more explicit parts with nothing new to offer if the latter didn't deter you from the original? The only headscratcher here is abridging the title as well. My first thought before reading the post, indeed, was about a new game from the same series or something.😅
I'll just get the original. Who would buy something censored with less content? Lol .. Usually when something gets re-released it's because they added more, not the opposite.
Wait, the gameplay of this looks just like Trailblazer on the C64.

I might pick this up if it's any good, I really enjoyed Trailblazer and Cosmic Causeway on the C64.

@tyranny_life Sounds like you might be thinking of Kinetica on the PS2, maybe?
In any case, the Extreme G series was awesome. Keep hoping for those to get remastered, especially XGRA to fix up it's framerate. Someone must have the rights because you can still buy Extreme G 2 on Steam.
Its more like sky roads. Who remembers that.
They… could have just updated the original with a clean mode to choose from? Lol
@SepticLemon I was ready to post the same message as yours but for Amstrad and I saw your reply! Hey, we are very old !!! I was playing it on Amstrad cpc 6128 !!

@judaspete you are correct! Thank you!
I didn't even know Extreme-G 2 was on steam.
This is literally just SkyRoads with VN sections. I'm excited.
explicit content?
I own and played pilot yume extensively and there isn't really "explicit" content.
the "naughtiness" is very abstract.
if yume is explicit, xenoblade 2 is straight up porn. lol
Yes, um, I'm already familiar with the existence of Nirvana Pilot Yume. The gameplay of the pilot sections is apparently awful. So no....
Only 2 bucks? I'll skip getting a fancy coffee today to give it a go.
Update!
I should have got coffee.
It's nothing like F zero in any shape or form.
More like Skyroads the ancient DOS game.
this has been on Switch for about two years, and it's absolutely dreadful.
for that launch price, sold!
@BoFiS
the original uncensored one is on sale for 99c on the eshop every now and then.
get that one instead.
it's not a good game by any means though
