Put this one on the record as "something we weren't expecting" — Microids has announced that it will be releasing Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission, which is an officially licensed "new vision" for Tatio's Operation Wolf series, which started on the NES back in 1987. The original was followed by three sequels, Operation Thunderbolt in 1998, Operation Wolf 3 in 1994, and Operation Tiger in 1998.
Operation Wolf was an on-rails light gun shooter which was one of the most popular arcade titles back in the '80s, and Microids is continuing the series' legacy. You'll be able to play Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission either solo or co-op, but one thing we're hoping for is the use of motion controls so we can use our Joy-Cons to aim and take down enemies.
Here are all of the details from Microids' press release:
Microids is delighted to announce Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission with a handful of screenshots. Discover or rediscover Operation Wolf, the cult classic arcade game developed and published by TAITO in 1987, one of the very first games to offer side-scrolling rail shooting action.
Developed by the French studio Virtuallyz Gaming, Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission remains faithful to the original game whilst offering a brand new art style. Players are invited to experience the mood of an 80’s action movie thanks to non-stop frenetic gameplay!
In the game campaign, play solo or co-op locally as special agents tasked to fight a criminal organization. In addition to drug and weapon trafficking, the organization led by the mysterious General Viper seems to have developed a weapon of mass destruction! Following the discovery of several of the group bases, the agents are sent on location to dismantle the consortium, eliminate the weapons and free the hostages from various prisoner camps.
Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission will be released in fall 2022 both digitally and in retail with a Day One Edition for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 & Nintendo Switch and digitally only on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC
The VR version of the game for Meta Quest 2 will launch in 2023.
Game facts:
- Comeback of the 1987 cult arcade game!
- New art style
- Non-stop action
- A campaign for one or two players
- A survival mode (endless waves of enemies)
- A full-blown arsenal (smg, shotgun, grenade launcher…)
- A leaderboard
This new game is due to launch sometime in the Fall of this year on Switch, so we'll likely hear about a release date pretty soon. But for now, can we start praying that this will bring back the rail shooter genre?

I hate the visuals, so even though I like rail shooters, this is an easy pass for me...
The name Microids inspires little confidence.
@Mach_Rider Are there any good rail shooters on the Switch? Rico and House of the Dead are the only ones I can think of?
I dont mind on the rail shooters, but with no lightguns its pointless, just couldnt get on with House of the Dead.
Remember playing the original on my brothers C64 with an old lightgun (which I still have)
This is the reason I miss a Nintendo console with a sensor bar. This has my interest, but oh how I miss duckhunt.
My Sinden Lightgun will like this (on PC).
Original looks better...
'Brand new game' or just the original with new graphics?
A played a fair bit of this on ZX Spectrum, which actually had a proper lightgun option.
Would never have believed that in thirty years time, this wouldn't really be possible any more.
pass. we are moving backwards - without a lightgun option these sort of games are a total waste of time.
@MarioBrickLayer I actually don't have any on Switch. It's just a genre I've had a soft spot since I was a kid. Spent too much time playing "Virtua Cop 2" I guess
Absolutely love rail shooters not enough of em these days!! But this looks awful compared to the iconic pixel art from the Taito classics.
This looks like a cheaply-made browser game, or $0.99 Switch eShop shovelware, sadly.
I’ll stick to the Speccy versions of Wolf & Thunderbolt. This doesn’t do much for me at all.
I played a crazy amount of this in the arcades and on the Amiga computer which was an okay'ish port. I'm down for this one if it's a fair price!!
I still have it on the Nes but I didn't like it so much! Cabal is way better and also support 2 co-op player!
I'd played Thunderbolt in the arcade... I remember the C64 tape loader for Operation Wolf started with the text 'it's the wulf', before the brilliant Ocean Loader music kicked in. Played that one a lot, was a nice port. This doesn't look too great to me at first glance...
This is the most generic unoriginal looking game I’ve ever seen in my life
Oof... that art style...
I’m in as long as the controls don’t get too wonky.
This looks like a mobile game ported over to consoles, or an asset flip title with a name like "Base Attack Shooter 3D" or something. It definitely doesn't strike me as an officially licensed Taito product that's part of an existing IP of theirs. I can see this going into bargain bin prices fairly fast, depending on how much it costs.
Could be fine gameplay wise, though. Hopefully it will be for those that are interested in getting this game.
@VeeGee456 tbf after all those half assed overpriced compilations they’ve been greenlighting this seems like something taito would be a okay with
I only tried the NES port, which quickly proved itself the NES Zapper was good for slow games like Duck Hunt, not fast-paced action games like Operation Wolf. It's that trigger recoil, you could probably break your thumb playing these kinds of games.
I'd be tempted to see if the Famicom gun fares better, but it's crazy expensive and I don't know how likely it'd get seized by customs stupidly confusing it for a real firearm. I've heard stories about how dumb they can get sometimes.
As much as I want to be excited. Lightgun games are just awful without a crt and a you know a light gun. Pointing and pressing the recalibrate button on a joycon or wiimote or psmove is just no fun at all.
Pretty sure this started in the arcades and not the NES. I was excited for this, but unsure of the new art style. Hopefully, a physical release comes with two Uzis.
I was never a fan of this series so probably may skipped this one. Got the original two Operation Wolf on NES and Sega Master System and both played terribly even with light gun support.
It just doesn't look meaty enough. The graphics are awful both techically and aesthetically. Bah!.
If it was on Wii I might of got it, in spite of the rather unappealing visuals. The switch joycon just doesn't compare to the wiimote for these sorts of games.
That was one of my first ever games on the ZX Spectrum
Such a missed opportunity.
Natsume would have been an ideal dev to make a pixel based new instalment.
We used to have the original arcade game at home quite often.
those damn uzi machine guns constantly broke.
Woah, wasn’t expecting that. I’d love to see a new Time Crisis or my favorite light gun game of all time, Gunbullet! But I would absolutely need one of those awesome arcade guns with the kickback.
Can't wait to pick this one up. Love these sort of things. I think all Taito games are great. Yes, I did go all out on the egret mini.
I don't think I care about this for Switch but this seems like a slam dunk for VR, so when it hits the Quest I'll be paying attention.
@MarioBrickLayer
RICO is a FPS.
If they find a way to mark it work well, I’m all over this.
@stuntz0rZ 😀 Same!
@AgentLA Oh right! I thought it was a rail shooter! Can you think of any other rail shooters?
@MarioBrickLayer
Was the New Panzer Dragoon on rails? I hope this one is good, but much like the others, these seem to work much better with the Wii & its tech. Got a bunch there that I still revisit a few times a year.
@AgentLA I'd love to see the Sinden Light Gun used with some rail shooters on the Switch!

@AgentLA I think you're right about Panzer Dragoon, but the review wasn't great...

Argh, is this why Arcade Archives have never released Operation Wolf yet. 😰
