Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke

AnnoyingFrenzy

Ehhh... people are acting like they put the rhyme verbatim into the movie. I agree that the rhyme is offensive, but I don't think the movie is actually referencing it? The entire point was to make the "Chi-knees" pun. Assuming the character/actor is Chinese in some way it actually works. Is it the "Look at these knees" line? That line combines the "Look at these" and "Dirty knees" lines of the rhyme, but doesn't contain either of the racist elements of those lines. Specifically he neither points to his breasts nor uses the word dirty. I don't know, in my opinion the joke in the movie doesn't reflect a usage of a racist playground rhyme, but I'm not Chinese and can't tell them what they can and can't be offended by so I'll defer to their judgement. Not like it matters the movie is toss anyway.

Huh, thought Fates did better than Awakening, then again, they split that one into three games so I guess that would inflate the numbers. Edit: Yeah, just checked a few sites and they all say that Fates did 3.00 Million and Awakening did 2.31 Million. Obviously then, Awakening sold better as an individual game than Fates did, but I'm not seeing a 2.94 Million for Awakening anywhere. Where is that number coming from, I am genuinely curious.

Re: Retro's Hiring Spree Continues As It Recruits Veteran GTA Producer

@Bermanator Sadly a developer would have signed an NDA, so nothing official would be stated by them about the game and Retro Studios is owned wholly by Nintendo, so I imagine any official statement by the company would have to go through Nintendo anyway. I agree that I would love to know more about the game, but that's just not going to happen for the foreseeable future.
A new F-Zero would be awesome.

People love overreacting to these things. What I find interesting is if Metroid Prime 4 wasn't announced at E3, we would have never gotten the update video and would instead be theorizing what game Retro was making instead with all of these new hires. Would that be better? Is knowing that they're a year into development of a game we learned about 3 years ago better than not knowing what game they're working on at all? I think so if only because I can't stand rumor articles. I'll accept official news on Metroid Prime 4 if and when Retro and Nintendo are ready to officially reveal it. When will that be? 1 year from now? 5? Doesnt matter, I've waited longer not believing they'd even make another one, so I can wait a little longer peacefully.

@BulbasaurusRex I figured this would be your reply, and I have nothing against your opinion, it just happens to differ from my own. My problem wasn't with the transition between third-person or first-person, it was with needing to go into first-person at all, I would have vastly preferred staying in third-person the whole game (A position that was proved to me after playing Maxximum Edition). You say you can quickly move out of first-person to dodge something, but why would I want to constantly move in and out of first person mode just to shoot one thing with a missile, either let me adjust my movement in first-person or fire the missile in third-person. Sense move? Aagh, still not entirely sure how I feel about it, it felt cool, but also made some combat encounters way too easy. As for the D-pad, it definitely works, no question about it, but I would have preferred analog movement. That's a me thing, I don't expect or wish for you to agree with all of my arguments, some are going to be a matter of preference. I think it's well documented that they artificially limited the control scheme to what I believe to be to the detrament of the game. The game would have worked perfectly fine if they allowed for the option of analog movement.

Last thing I'll say about the story, because as you say its a love-it or hate-it kind of deal, is that while there is justification in the game for Samus to follow Adam's orders, it makes no sense to me for any of Samus' upgrades outside of the Power Bomb and Missiles (which were authorized immediately anyway). There is no justifiable reason I can see to not have the Grapple Beam, Varia Suit, gravity suit, space jump, speed booster etc. on from the very beginning. If they were that much of a problem at the start, then Adam would also deauthorize them the second they weren't needed anymore! The one that bugs me the most (outside of the stupid Varia Suit one) is the Ice Beam, literally the rest of his crew has the Ice Beam from the beginning, but Samus can't have it until much later. This all being said, I don't play games, let alone Metroid games, for the story. I eye-rolled through most of the cutscenes and that was about it.

Again, I'll finish by saying a lot of these are relatively minor gripes that just prevent the game from being as good as other Metroid games, a solid 7/10 game from me. Glad you were able to find more enjoyment where I couldn't. High hopes for Metroid Prime 4!

@BulbasaurusRex @oliver139
I'd like to preface this by saying that Other M isn't as bad as most of the internet would have you believe and isn't even my least favorite Metroid game. That said, I disagree with you saying the gameplay is "fantastic". Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion gameplay is "fantastic", Other M gameplay I would only classify as "good-enough". My main issues stem from the fact that in order to fire a missile you have to go into the first-person mode, which forces you to stand in one spot and can't move (outside of sense-move which I feel is its own can of worms) is beyond annoying for me. Additionally, the fact that movement was limited to a D-pad was annoying as well, never liked moving a 3D game with a 2-D control scheme. Also, there was very little music in the game, and what was there wasn't all that memorable imo.

As for the story? Didn't care for it. Even beyond the voice-acting, which was passable for everyone (except Samus, no I didn't think the monotone voice acting worked), the lines themselves were terrible. The biggest gripe I have with the story, of course, is the way they use the story to justify how Samus gets her weapons back. Locking them behind Adam saying "oh hey, it looks like your friend is getting mauled up there, I guess you can use your grapple beam to save them" was beyond frustrating, Samus should have her own agency in those situations to authorize the use of those herself.

Granted, these points are all subjective what parts of a game someone is going to enjoy or not enjoy and I'm not saying you guys are wrong for enjoying it, I just wanted to give my thoughts on it as a sort of, contrary opinion. I'm not going to touch the fact the game is linear (I prefer more open Metroids, but I also enjoyed Fusion so it being linear isn't a problem for me). I will end by saying though, you all should check out a mod for Other M called Maxximum Edition. It fixed pretty much every issue I had with Other M (from how to fire missiles, Samus' suit texture, even the justification for how to unlock Samus' weapons!) and made the game so much more fun!
