I just discovered that the NES and SNES apps are free on the Japanese eshop. You don't need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to get the apps. So if that is what you are interested in, it might be a better idea to just create a japanese account than bothering with the free 7 day trial.
It doesn't look like Banjo Kazooie at all to me, neither the gameplay shown here nor the art style match Banjo's. Which isn't a bad thing on its own though, there are tons of great games that aren't Banjo Kazooie.
That's litteraly 3 times faster. I'm curious to see the stats of howlongtobeat. I love Skyward Sword, but I don't have that much time to play games anymore. I need short games. If this version can be beaten under 20 hours without skipping the cutscenes, I might consider replaying it.
My favourite is Metroid Prime 2. I can understand the complains about the fetch quest at the end of the game, but for me it's not a problem at all. By the end of the game you get a really good fell of the levels and the improved gears makes backtracking fun and surprisingly enjoyable.
My only complaint comes from the fact that there's a lot of dead ends in the dark world where the "mac guffin keys" are hidden. It would have been neat to be able to travel from the light world to the light world A Link to the Past style. But I guess it would have been a nightmare to program.
But the good far out weight the bad to me, the levels get more and more interesting (the luminoth fortress is nothing short of amazing, ,even the boss, the quadraxis is pure genius) and I love the additional complexity of the game.
To me it's an under rated gem, one of my favourite game of all time. Nothing less.
Personnaly I really liked the gimmicks and the freeroaming levels. I also enjoyed Star Fox Command and Zero a lot despite their flaws (which were mainly the fault of their hardware). I also liked Rogue Squadron and its "sequel" Battle for Naboo a lot. So I'd gladly play a new Star Fox game that focus mainly on free roaming levels with varied objectives and/or gimmicks and have a few linear and cinematic levels once in a while to help the pacing of the game.
I've never really been into pure arcade games, the OG Star Fox and Star Fox 64 feel a bite bare to me. And I like to control the pace of my games, so I don't enjoy on rails games. But that's just me.
I'll give Mario Kingdom Battle another chance. I liked it but got bored at the third world I think. But that Sparks of Hope trailers has hyped me. And unlike back then I'm done with the Switch games I really wanted to play.
I don't really like that. I like to get every single item in my Metroid game. And it kind of ruins it by adding one extra E-tank and missile pack behind a pay wall but honestly it's not a big deal.
Overall I really don't like these Amiibo features. If they're really useful it's a shame to hide them behind a pay wall, but if they're not useful then if you happen to own the Amiibo, then you're disappointed.
It's always disappointing in the end. It's kind of like all these DLC that aren't really meaty, but even worst in a way.
That said, the figurines are really cool looking. I might buy them since I love both that new Samus and EMMI character design.
I'm surprised in a very good way by Dread. I expected Metroid Prime Trilogy or a Samus Returns port, but instead we get a real sequel. The game looks amazing too, albeit not very original, but I have yet to watch the tree house stuff.
I'm sure it's Rocket Robot on Wheels, it's not about the label. It's just that I'm playing it these days, and it's an amazing hidden gem for the system. If you like 3D collect-a-ton, it's a must.
I'm not hyped. I've aways been a person more focused on gameplay instead of the narrative, and some people always hype about choices and consequences, but it's always disappointing in the end. You either end up with meaningless choices that don't matter, or you have strong choices which means that no choice matter and you get two or three storylines where everyone can die so they can't really matter in the game. And if there is a type of game I wouldn't want to replay, it's a turn based jRPG. That said, maybe this is the reason they had to change some things about the battle system. But considering how conservative the series is, I wouldn't get too hyped about that part too. Squareenix already have Final Fantasy for the more experimental stuff.
I have yet to play a game where choices really matter, I'd rather have a strong and unique narrative story.
Besides that, I have faith in the Dragon Quest franchise, I'm sure it will be a good game as usual. I'm just not hyped about that narrative thing and choices.
I really love that console, but francly it's library of original games is very thin. There are lost of good games though, but most times there are much better ports/originals. Some ports are impressive though, I was blown away by Donkey Kong Country for exemple, but why wasting your time on that 8-bit version when there is a much superior snes version?
Anyway, here are my favourite gbc games :
Both Zelda oracles Megaman Xtreme 1 and 2 (surprisingly great pots and I'm a fan of the franchise) Dragon Quest 3 Pokemon Trading Card Game Wario Land 3
I remember really liking Duke Nukem and Tomb Raider too. Once again these are two surprisingly good 2d spin offs.
At first I thought that they should focus on the next gen consoles and not bother with the PS4 and Switch. But now I think they should focus on the Switch version because of several reasons :
First of all, the Timesplitters games are mostly fondly remembered by Gamecube fans because of the lack of competition on the platform and because of the Goldeneye /Perfect Dark filiation.
Secondly, the blue ocean strategy, there is barely any competition in Switch, there are some great FPS (Doom ethernal, Splatoon 2) but not much, the completion is way more ferocious on the other platforms.
Third, obviously Free Radical won't be able to compete with the the army of developers working on Call of Duty or the likes, and we don't want some modern style shooter with some open world battle royale or photorealistic graphisms. They need to bring that old cartoon art style, and the Switch is powerful enough to do that. I think they should just acquire an Unreal Engine licence, and aim for some 900p/60fps. They can always port it to other systems after that with minimal efforts. They need to focus on the gameplay instead of the technology, that what ruined Haze. How can you make a fine game is the tech is not ready?
And my last point, the Switch has a massive user base, it should be enough, also gyro aiming is glorious.
Speaking of controls, they need some kind of legacy controls that mimick Goldeneye's, and Timesplitters 2's aiming. Just like they did in Timesplitters 3. It's all about nostalgia, but let's not alien the people that haven't played those games back then.
Man,I'm so hyped. It's a good time to be a Goldeneye nostalgic. First there is that indie take with the SPIES game, then IO interactive is working on a James Bond game, Microsoft has a Perfect Dark reboot cooking, and now Free Radical Design rises from its grave with key staff member.
The last game I enjoyed a lot was Metroid Prime 2 echoes, which is starting to be a bit old lol. It's not that games aren't getting better, but I don't enjoy them as much as what I was a teenager.
As of recent games I loved, I can mention Zelda BotW, Super Mario Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2.
But most of my favourite games are from the N64/Gamecube era.
Eager, no, the GBA is probably the console I played the most and it accompanied me a long time during its prime, and then on my PSP via emulations. I used to travel a lot back then. And then there was the ambassador program on 3DS. Good Times.
I played and loved the original back in the 90s and I'm not hyped for a few reasons.
The original game aged badly, all it had for it back then was the cinematic presentation but it's been totally mastered by other games today.
There have been a sequel in 1995 and a remaster a few years ago. Fade to Black was a fine game back then, but it aged even worse than the original game. And the remaster was a disaster.
I don't want to put shoot the ambulance but everything Paul Cuisset has touched in the recent years was underwhelming to say the least.
So ask another old guy to get hyped. I wish Paul Cuisset and his team good luck though. Prove me wrong guys, it would be great if the game turned out great. But I'm a bit sceptical as it is.
I think MM2 gets way too much praises. It's a flawed game, but hey, it was the first great game of the series, and it must have been amazing to play it in its prime. On the NES my favourite one is 5 because of the really nice and varied levels.
As a consumer I really don't like that idea. Especially since there is absolutely no technical reasons to limit the time window to buy the game, they have to maintain the ability for those who bought the game to download it for a long period of time so it's a bit of a headache.
To add insult to the injury, 3D All Stars features lazy ports and is/was overpriced. I'm glad they made a physical release though, I felt like replaying Mario Sunshine and it's cool that I was able to resell the game once I was done with it. If it was digital only I would have skipped it.
It reminds me that I have not played Battle Network 6. I got bored by 5 and it's "tactical battles" or whatever they were called. But apparently 6 is a nice return to form.
I was so hyped for this game. Rare was the king of the N64. I was such a fan back then that I enjoyed Banjo Kazooie over Mario 64 and I still prefer Diddy Kong Racing over Mario Kart. I thought it would be better than Ocarina of Time and maybe as good as Mojora's Mask (one of my favourite game ever).
How wrong was I, the final game looked amazing but was super boring, and then Microsoft broke my heart when they bought Rare. It could have been fine if they continued making great games on Xbox, but Rare never managed to live up to their N64 era legacy.
Really curious to play and learn more about that N64 build though. It's great to see all these canceled game in the wild.
Man, the line ups are so sad, just bring back the Virtual Console Nintendo, it's okay that they can't get third party to release their big games on a "free service" but this is ridiculous. Who wants to play those very random and average games? At this point, I wish Nintendo would start to open the NSO apps to more consoles alike the Gameboy or Nintendo 64, that way they could give classic Nintendo and we'd get more interesting games.
It sucks that we don't have much news, but it's better that they don't rush too much to give us stellar games. Cyberpunk got rushed for this holiday season, and it's kind of a disaster.
I'm still amazed the game was available for free on the Epic Games store, I have yet to play it, but I had the first game on my backlog and had a blast with it. I'm kind of pissed they didn't continue to push the 3D platform gameplay though, it looks like the second game is much better. But the competition is extremely high, there are tons of great 2D sidescrollers, but good 3D ones? That's another story.
I really liked it back then. The screen was better than the GBA SP (criper colors), and the dpad is awesome. It's a shame that it lost the backward compatibility with the old GB games though. But now I love big pixels.
I love them all, but I think Odyssey is the best. I really like open levels, so the Galaxy games while excellent, aren't my favourites. So it's a tie between 64 and Odyssey for me, but while 64 has the nostalgia factor. Odyssey is just a much better game. I like how the levels are big and open, while still having some clear goal. It's a genuinely great way the mix the confort and pacing of linear levels and the freedom and replay value of open-ended levels without the hassle of being confusing or redunded.
So yeah, Odyssey, but I gave 10 stars to most games on that list anyway.
I'm very disapointed by that Hyrule Warrior announcement. I was expecting to get some BotW 2 news, and maybe even a surprise release for the end of 2020. Well, I guess, it's not a surprise that a Zelda game takes forever to make. But considering they're recycling Hyrule from BotW1, I was expecting a much quicker release. Hopefully the concept of BotW2 is more ambitious than it seems and Aonuma needs time.
I'm a bit worried about the holiday seasons though, where are the big games? What will we play for Christmas this year?
The free download is smart, but 100€ is way too much for the little Kart. No thanks Nintendo, the game looks cool, but that's way too expensive for a game that will most likely won't have much lasting appeal.
@Rayquaza2510 What about 1080p hand-held and 4k docked? We don't even need true 4k, something like 1440p with some nice 4k upscaling like Nvidia's DLSS could do wonder. Kind of like the PS4 pro barely run any game at real 4k.
As a happy owner of 1080p only (but with a 144Hz refresh rate and freesync support) monitor I'm not really interested by a SwitchPro anyway, unless older games run at a significantly better framerate and/or resolution.
I wouldn't mind some Breath of the Wild or Witcher 3 running at native 1080p and 60fps for exemple.
I'm surprised by the low score for Color Splash , I had a blast with it. The only ones I didn't enjoy too much are Super Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (I hate cross-overs, and mixing too overmilked series/concept doesn't work)
@Divinebovine I honestly think the "Goldeneye template" is better than the "Half-Life template" that became the standard in first person shooter campaigns.
I love the mix of open ended levels and linearity, the challenge, Goldeneye's levels are highly repayable while most shooter levels since then are only fun once. And whenever they're challenging, you have regenerative health or checkpoints every 3 minutes to not stress the player too much. Which I think is wrong because a shooter should focus more on the action, the tension, the challenge, than the narration. I think that's why single player shooter are become so rare except a few exception of course.
I also prefer the aiming system of Goldeneye, sure the framerate was not good. But first, it's an early N64 game, ***** framerate was the norm back then. And secondly, it's only abysmal when you mess arroud with explosive in multilayer, when you're just shooting people with standard guns, it is totally fine.
Sure it's not 60fps,but to get 60fps on N64 you need ugly graphism like in F-Zero X (which is an amazing game with an awesome gameplay, but it looks ugly even by 1998 standards).
I also prefer how the aiming works, but hey preferences. I totally understand people that can't stand Goldeneye though, the game is showing its age. And even for old school games, those who were used to play on PC with much superior specs and mouse keyboard are puzzled as to why GE was such a phenomenon. Personnaly I also played on PC back then, but thought GE was much more interesting to play and more repayable.
Anyway, and to get back to my initial point, it's not just nostalgia. GE was really something else. It is a bit rough to play today because its control scheme is very different from modern shooters, but trust me, if you insist a little to get familiar with its controls, you'll find an amazing game that is still greatly enjoyable.
I know what they need to do. Let's take the secret agent stuff to the next level and make it happen in the future, so that there will be cool futuristic accessories and weapons to play with.
Also, considering the meetoo and black lives matter, they should do stuff like a black president of the United States and a female as the main character instead of James Bond.
@NintendoPok I'm starting to wonder if it wasn't a smart and cynical movea planned from the very beginning actually. I mean, they knew the project would be canned but they started it anyway to get some hype from as long as they can from the nostalgic people.
Anyway, I wish them good luck, I hope the game will turn out great and be a success. I'm totally fine with a Goldeneye spiritual successor. I've been starving for one since Timesplitters 3.
I'm all for Wii U ports too, but Nintendo is too greedy, they shouldn't sell these ports the same price as new games. I understand they're here to make money and all, but stopping selling Pikmin 3 on the Wii U eShop, just to sell 50€ on Switch is a bit of a plunder.
That said, people need to be smart, if I wanted to replay Pikmin 3, I'd just buy a second hand copy and play it on Wii U, or wait a bit to enjoy it on Switch if I really need or want to play it there.
Ports are good overall, it's a nice way to fill up the planning between several releases, especially when games needs to be delayed (like Metroid Prime 4), what kind of upset me, is selling these games at the premium price when they're old.
I'm in for a new DKC Returns. But honestly there are tons of great sidescroller on the indie scene. And I prefer that Retro Studios work on a 3D Metroid instead. They are already late to ship Metroid Prime 4,so yeah...
Nintendo can always choose another studio for the development though, Playtonic would be an amazing pick for exemple.
@Zenszulu actually, it shouldn't be too mush of a problem, tons of PSone games have mappable controls, and most don't use all the buttons of the controller. I'm sure you can play tons of PSone games just fine.
@fafonio I'm worried about BotW2 too. The map is so massive that the simple idea of returning to it frighten me, I bought the DLC but I have yet to play it, and I haven't found all the shrine while I originally intended to do so.
I hope they have some great ideas under their sleeves, because they really need one to justify using the same map all over again. I hope they'll have so nice ideas to shake things up and justify returning to it. I wonder if you'll be able to continue with a BotW1 save file and continue exploring it, it would be a nice. But at the same time, it would be quite a headache for Nintendo to make a game that is fun with an overpowered Link from the first game while still working with a fresh link.
Or maybe the map will be drastically changed, but at that point why not starting from scratch instead?
Anyway, I'm worried, but Nintendo is pretty good at surprising people.
Very nice read, I have yet to finish it. But English isn't my native langage and I have trouble with an expression in the second page. They're talking about the cheese Easter eggs hidden in every level : “Brett called it a cheese tidy”
What is a cheese tidy? What does this expression mean?
I really miss these "arcade Nintendo racing games", I had some hopes for a Wii U or Switch F-Zero episode after the cameos int the MK8 DLCs. But sadly, Nintendo didn't do anything. It seems to be like a no brainer to just tweek the MK8 engine a little and make a great F-Zero game.
I'm finally playing the original Yooka Laylee, I really like it overall. I love the controls and music, and the core gameplay is great. I have more rever e concerning the characters and story, most characters look downright ugly, and I'm not digging the humour. But overall it's a great nostalgia trip for someone like me who grew up with the N64 and who loves the Banjo Kazooie games. I'm kind of sad that they didn't improve on the solid bases of the first and gone with a more generic 2d game with the sequel. But hey, it looks like the second game turned out great according to the reviews and my impressions from the demo.
IMO the only mainline Mario game that needs a remake is Super Mario Sunshine. The resort island setting is great, and as was the FLUDD gadget, but the level design was lackluster and there were too much repetition with the star objectives. Only a remake could do the concept justice by maybe modernising the controls but more importantly completely rework the levels. The soundtrack was a bit disappointing too, and Yoshi was a bit useless with its puzzling fear of water. Those things can't be fixed by a simple remaster.
As of the other games, the best thing would be a Super Mario Collection with HD remasters, but Nintendo is greedy so I expect some individual remaster sold at high price (like New Super Mario Bros U remaster...).
A good compromise would be some themed collections. Like New Super Mario Collection which would contain all the New Mario games, or a 3D collection which would contain 64,Sunshine and both Galaxy games. But then, where would 3D Land and 3D World belong? Only time will tell.

Game & Watch for me, but I hardly count it as video game. The real deal was the NES ,and the first system I owned was a Game Boy.

It reminds me that I have not played Battle Network 6. I got bored by 5 and it's "tactical battles" or whatever they were called. But apparently 6 is a nice return to form.
Re: Rare's Cancelled N64 Project Dinosaur Planet Has Been Leaked Online
Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles
Re: Poll: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo 64 Console Variant?
I love them all because the N64 is my favourite console ever (because I was a teenager when it was released).
I voted for the black one, because it's the one I owned. But the other are great too, and the Pikachu one, while stupid looking, is really fun.
Re: Nintendo Has Nothing To Share About Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3 And Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Right Now
It sucks that we don't have much news, but it's better that they don't rush too much to give us stellar games. Cyberpunk got rushed for this holiday season, and it's kind of a disaster.
Re: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair Celebrates Its First Birthday With A Tasty 60% Discount
Re: Random: Remember To Charge Your Switch At Least Twice A Year, Nintendo Helpfully Suggests
It's always charging I mainly play on TV with the dock. I turn off the AC though, but it's almost always 100%.
But it reminds my that I need to charge my 3DS XL once or twice a year if I want the battery to survive a long time. Maybe I should sell it though.
Re: Feature: All Hail The Game Boy Micro, The Sexiest And Most Impractical Game Boy Ever
I really liked it back then. The screen was better than the GBA SP (criper colors), and the dpad is awesome. It's a shame that it lost the backward compatibility with the old GB games though. But now I love big pixels.
Re: Poll: What's The Best 3D Mario Game?
I love them all, but I think Odyssey is the best. I really like open levels, so the Galaxy games while excellent, aren't my favourites. So it's a tie between 64 and Odyssey for me, but while 64 has the nostalgia factor. Odyssey is just a much better game. I like how the levels are big and open, while still having some clear goal. It's a genuinely great way the mix the confort and pacing of linear levels and the freedom and replay value of open-ended levels without the hassle of being confusing or redunded.
So yeah, Odyssey, but I gave 10 stars to most games on that list anyway.
Re: You'll Have To Wait A Little Longer For Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 News, It Seems
Re: Even At £100, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Doesn't Come With A Game Card
The free download is smart, but 100€ is way too much for the little Kart. No thanks Nintendo, the game looks cool, but that's way too expensive for a game that will most likely won't have much lasting appeal.
Re: Rumour: New Switch Model Launching Early 2021 Alongside A Strong Game Lineup, According To Reports
Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You
I'm surprised by the low score for Color Splash , I had a blast with it. The only ones I didn't enjoy too much are Super Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (I hate cross-overs, and mixing too overmilked series/concept doesn't work)
Re: GoldenEye 25 Shuts Down After Cease And Desist From 007 IP Holder
Re: GoldenEye 25 Shuts Down After Cease And Desist From 007 IP Holder
I know what they need to do. Let's take the secret agent stuff to the next level and make it happen in the future, so that there will be cool futuristic accessories and weapons to play with.
Also, considering the meetoo and black lives matter, they should do stuff like a black president of the United States and a female as the main character instead of James Bond.
Re: GoldenEye 25 Shuts Down After Cease And Desist From 007 IP Holder
@NintendoPok I'm starting to wonder if it wasn't a smart and cynical movea planned from the very beginning actually. I mean, they knew the project would be canned but they started it anyway to get some hype from as long as they can from the nostalgic people.
Anyway, I wish them good luck, I hope the game will turn out great and be a success. I'm totally fine with a Goldeneye spiritual successor. I've been starving for one since Timesplitters 3.
Re: Video: The Switch Is A Wii U Port Machine, And That's A Good Thing
Re: Ex-Rare Composer David Wise Says He Would Be "Delighted" To Be Involved With Another Donkey Kong Country Game
Re: Random: Rather Than Pay A Fortune For The Legendary SNES PlayStation, One Man Built His Own
@Zenszulu actually, it shouldn't be too mush of a problem, tons of PSone games have mappable controls, and most don't use all the buttons of the controller. I'm sure you can play tons of PSone games just fine.
Re: Community: Found A Real Gem On Switch eShop? We Want To Hear From You
That's a really neat idea, there are so many games on the eshop, it's really hard to keep track of great games.
Re: New Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Glitch Lets You Escape Hyrule And Go Beyond The Map's Borders
Re: Feature: Perfect Dark Turns 20 - The Definitive Story Behind The N64 Hit That Outclassed James Bond
Very nice read, I have yet to finish it. But English isn't my native langage and I have trouble with an expression in the second page. They're talking about the cheese Easter eggs hidden in every level : “Brett called it a cheese tidy”
What is a cheese tidy? What does this expression mean?
Re: Soapbox: Switch Really Needs Games Like Excitebike 64, Wave Race, 1080° Snowboarding And, Yes, F-Zero
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 18th)
Re: Yooka-Laylee Is Now Three Years Old
3 years old and still in my backlog. It's high up there tough, I plan to play it before the end of the year lol
Re: Nintendo To Remaster 'Most Of Super Mario’s 35-Year Catalogue' For Switch in 2020, New Report Says
Re: Luigi's Mansion 3 Dev Explains Lack Of Skill Trees Or Upgrades, And The Answer's Surprisingly Deep
@carlos82 definitely agree with you. I'm so tired of seeing skill trees everywhere.
