One of the key selling points of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on Switch when compared to the Wii original is that the whole experience has been streamlined. The core gameplay is still very much the same, of course, but little tweaks have been made here and there which really bring the package up to 2021 standards.
However, just hearing about the many differences between Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and the 2011 version is one thing, but actually seeing them in motion is another; so, we decided to put things to the test and see just how quickly we can get off the opening location of Skyloft in the Switch version when compared to the Wii edition.
The game is out today – have you been playing it already?

Skyloft’s just so impractical to live in. There isn’t even a massive fence around the city so god knows how many children walk off cliffs and die.
@nessisonett
You're just jealous that those kids are better at speedrunning leaving Skyloft than you.
Pre-ordered this a week ago from Amazon (with Prime), but my account says it’ll be delivered on Wednesday… so it’ll take me quite a while yet to get out of Skyloft yet 😢
Ps, really annoyed!
@nessisonett Maybe their next president can build a wall.Heh.
@nessisonett didn't they have a squad of loftwing riders constantly patrolling the air around Skyloft? I vaguely remember trying to jump off on purpose, and always getting caught by some guy in goggles who would then scold me
Do people take issue with Skyloft? I love that place. It’s the best town in the whole series for me
But that rock is my favorite part of the game...
@Jmjfrank Fun Fact: when I used to play DDR at arcades, my eyes couldn’t handle the bright lights so I would wear sunglasses inside the arcade. So if people wanted to talk to me, they would call me Goggles.
/Fun Fact
@The_Pixel_King got mine from game arrived at 9am today. Not keen on making bezos richer if I can help it.
@nessisonett @Jmjfrank yeah the entire purpose of the knights seems to be to keep people from falling off the islands. Since they don’t seem to do much else.
If in UK, Argos selling it for £39.99..... this caused me to impulse buy and its alot of fun using button controls compared to my memories of motion!!!
@Patendo Maybe I should cancel my Amazon pre-order (that hasn’t turned up) and just get it from Argos tomorrow? It’s my birthday tomorrow, too!
@The_Pixel_King This is the correct order of actions.
I want very much to play this game again, but like.... rent and travel and gas money and all that. Might just have to stick with my backlog for now.
I got the game and joycons but have to wait next month for the amiibo lol
Just got my copy of the game. I'm not a fan of speedrunning, but it's nice to know that's an option for the people who enjoy blowing through a game like this.
@nessisonett
Real civilizations in real earth where we live had villages, homesteads, and sometimes entire towns built on top of mountains surrounded by cliff faces on as many sides are possible where walls or any sort of barrier were impossible. In Japan, China, and Oceania in particular this was considered an ideal location because (long explanation that amounts to "the used wood more then stone and had little in the way of fortified construction"). In South American there were (still are, in fact) communities near the "Dead Zone" altitude that would build structures on broken canyon connected by a tri-robe (like a bride, but no floor; you hold on to two ropes and walk on a 3rd). Machu Picchu is like ... a thing!
Children are not mindless animals, and it's not hard to make sure toddlers stay indoors. Hell where I lived 2 years ago households, including scheduling of chores, preparing meals, shopping, and even basic repairs got handed to children when they turned 8-10. In most of rural Mongolia an 8 year old child is going to be able to free-climb, construct basic weapons and hunt with them, and will be a near expert at animal husbandry. This can handle not tossing themselves off cliffs.
Sadly in a lot of the west one of the main ways people gain and stay in power is shouting "WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN" and inventing more and more ridiculous pretend dangers to show the other guy wants your kids to die. Do that long enough and we get what we have now ... Parents who treat children like brain dead proto-mammals who can't go to the bathroom without drowning in the toilet. And when you tell kids that's how worthless and stupid they are from the day they are born ... well, they tend to believe you.
@The_Pixel_King do it!!! Treat yourself and have a wicked birthday weekend
@nessisonett It's called survival of the fittest. Helps keep the population in check.
@HeadPirate I was joking.
@nessisonett
Toilets. No wonder the inhabitants below are radged.
@Jmjfrank @nessisonett @Eel Yes, if you jump off of the island too early you will be rescued by one of the knights. Seems like that's their job.
Also I got the game, amiibo and JoyCon today. The game also came with a nice steelbook case.
After playing BoTW, is this a step back, equal to, or better experience than BoTW? Or apples to oranges..
@PhhhCough
Massive step back whatever you liked about BOTW probably isn’t in this one unless it was stamina management.
@PhhhCough I dont consider it a massive step back unless you dont like traditional 3d zelda like Ocarina onwards. The dungeons in the game are the best in the series, and there is a lot of quality writting for a zelda game. Its not as open ended since its traditional zelda before BotW but its still a great game, especially when this version fixed majority of the flaws.
Id say apples and oranges.
@PhhhCough definitely apples and oranges. structured very differently.
@Nontendo_4DS Yeah, I just really love the puzzles they offer, they do a lot with the sword functions and the gear you get in very clever ways. Theres puzzles in not only dungeons but every new fight encounter. I've never seen majority of them in Zelda before.
@Bizaster are you a badfish too?
@The_Pixel_King HAAAPPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope you have a fun day and enjoy skyward sword 🎂🎮
That's litteraly 3 times faster. I'm curious to see the stats of howlongtobeat. I love Skyward Sword, but I don't have that much time to play games anymore. I need short games. If this version can be beaten under 20 hours without skipping the cutscenes, I might consider replaying it.
