Can you believe it? Playtonic's unlikely duo Yooka-Laylee is now three years old! The original game of the same name was first released on the 11th of April 2017 after a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. And although it never saw the light of day on Nintendo's Wii U, it did eventually show up on the Switch.
To celebrate this special milestone, the game's publisher Team17 has released the following tweet, asking fans to share their favourite moments so far with these characters.
In this short time frame, Yooka-Laylee has made a cameo in the fighting game Brawlout and appeared in the side-scrolling sequel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. If you haven't tried out the second game yet, now is the perfect time. It's currently on sale on the Switch eShop for just $20.09 / £16.74.
Earlier this week, Playtonic also rolled out a new update for the Impossible Lair, making it a little bit easier. A second update will follow this on 14th April, and adds in an 8-bit soundtrack.
On behalf of everyone here at Nintendo Life, happy birthday Yooka-Laylee. Share your own favourite memories of these characters and their games in the comments below.

And oddly enough, still one of the better 3D platformers outside of Mario to come out recently.
Which is saying something cause the first game wasn't too hot.
What the heck. I feel super old now lol where did those 3 years go.
That aside, I did enjoy the game but I didn't think it was amazing or anything. Still good though and the sequel is a way more polished title. Looking forward to see what they do next!
Eh... not something I'm gonna celebrate. I wish Playtonic the best with the IP, but I seldom get excited about indie games that exist to be a spiritual successor to a dormant franchise. (EarthBound got a lot of those.)
The first game was pretty good, but Impossible Lair is genuinely one of the best platformers on the Switch. Happy birthday Yooka-Laylee!
@NerdyBoutKirby I get what you're saying, but Yooka isn't an indie franchise (published by Team 17, a pretty well-known publisher) and was developed by former Rare devs.
I wanted to like Yooka-Laylee but just... didn't. I keep hearing good things bout Impossible Lair though, I may check it out one of these days.
@Phostachio Ah, okay.
My favorite memory of this game was defending it all of 2018 as “actually pretty good!” And then wondering why I would put effort into defending a game that was like a 7.5
@Donutsavant
A 7.5 is good, though.
I only feel disappointment
@Phostachio I’m just not at a point in my life where I feel like defending a 7.5 is a good use of my time. Play it, don’t play it? Live your life man
@Donald_M same, I couldn't get past the annoying noises they made when they talked, I'm just glad I played it on Game Pass instead of buying it
I recently got a Switch. I want to get the sequel I’m passing on the first game. I love 3D platformers, but the reviews turned me off. As for the sequel, I enjoy those kinds of games, but something is telling me to pass on it. I think it has to do with what I read about the world map.
3 years old and still in my backlog. It's high up there tough, I plan to play it before the end of the year lol
Impossible Lair is easily one of the best platformers in recent years.
I most enjoyed the lengthy, great and memorable cast of characters. Especially Trowzer the Snake.
@outsider83 There is a demo for Impossible Lair on the Eshop. I'd recommend trying it before you buy.
I went into thr demo expecting to love it, platformers are my favourite genres and Tropical Freeze is one of the best, however it actually put me off from buying it. I can't quite put my finger on what it was I didn't like about it.
It's a good game, not quite great like BK but good nonetheless. The hate it gets is ridiculous and you can see why developers have moved away from the 3D platform genre. Sad for me as it is my favourite genre.
I don’t care about this franchise. I want Donkey Kong and Banjo.
This game was first released in December on the eshop so its more than 3 years old.
I like Y-L but I couldn't help comparing it unfavourably to B-K. I commend the efforts though. B-K probably had more people working on it.
Mediocre at best. Demo put me off
Never played the first game, but the sequel is brilliant! I hope the best to these guys, they deserve it.
Imo, Impossible Lair is almost at the same level as DK. These guys know what they do, you can see the experience they have there.
@antonio2244 do yourself a favour and give Impossible Lair a try. Playtonic is made by Rare members, keep that in mind.
@OorWullie I also love tropical freeze and don’t like impossible lair. I bought it before the demo unfortunately and digitally so I’m stuck with it. I hate yooka and laylee as characters. Not a patch on a bear and bird combination. It’s just bland in comparison to Donkey Kong with poor level design. Also poorly optimised , terrible loading times etc. I found a glitch in impossible lair where I was stuck in a wall. Silly over world also
@the_beaver no where near same level
@antonio2244 same. I tried to like it I really wanted to like it but meh.
I got Tropical Freeze in the sale recently and it AND the impossible lair are wonderful. However I wish Playtonic would put more love into the graphical fidelity of the Impossilbe Lair. DKTF is SO much sharper in handheld – whereas YL&TIL looks low res and has nasty jaggies around everything.
Anyway I know they are a much smaller team but it's just a shame this masterpiece isn't looking it's best. From what I can tell it's just not being rendered especially for the handheld mode – which should be fixable. I hope they do it.
The first YL looked spectacular to me in every way – loved that game and hope they return to 3D again for the next one.
I backed Yooka Laylee back when it got announced for Kickstarter, wasn’t too happy when they said other systems was getting it first and then after all my wasted time they gave it me only to announce a physical version AFTER therefore not allowing me to ask for it physically and even then it was a limited run release which sold out meaning my only way of getting it know is eBay and we all know how expensive the first game is on there
I'll admit.
Sort of lost its shine when it got cancelled for Wii U.
Felt like an excuse more than anything.
@sandman89 I said "in my opinion", man. For me, it IS near the same level as DK:TF. I don't really mind whether you think the same as me or not, honestly lol.
Oh man I memba this hidden gem way back when... Then it doubled it's price on release. Then hat in time was released and everyone expected better.
Adored this game, easily my fave 3d platformer since Sunshine way back. Too many fun moments to choose but the best was finding the last quill in Capital Cashino and thus the last pagie 100% completing it. Weirdly not got around to Impossible Lair.
Three years? It passed fast.
3 years later should be $10 on sale.
I think Nintendo should commission Playtonic to make the next DK Country game
I passed on the original at full price, but picked it up on sale at $20 last year and it was pretty solid in my book. Nothing ground-breaking mind you even compared to the era from which it's inspired, but still some fun to be had. I also picked up the retail copy of the Impossible Lair for $10 on BF last year also which I don't regret at all. There fun to be had on both games at the right price point.
@RPGamer I think PT should do what the makers of cat Quest are doing and release both on one game card
I like Yooka Laylee. Better than Tooie imho.
@OorWullie Thanks for letting me know about the demo. I’ll download as soon as I hit reply!
@Aurumonado Wow! I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a comment like yours. I’m not trying to start anything! ☺️ I was just genuinely surprised by your comment. I haven’t played either game. Just read about them and gamers opinions.
@PBandSmelly - I think the ambition is what got a hold of the first. It wasn't tempered, it was rallied by the masses.
I honestly think, mechanically, the first game is sound, but has a lot of design decisions that were just not ideal for the game. The loading points being a major detractor for me. But the franchise seems to grow pretty well. The universe feels more like a "fairytale" rather than just a budding duo platformer that B-K was.
But I liked the idea of levels "expanding" by adding more Pagies. I hope that a true Yooka-Laylee 2 expands on that.
I will always have fond memories of playing this one with my girlfriend on Xbox One back when we lived a tiny apartment. Boy, how things have changed! I have been thinking of purchasing it again on Nintendo Switch since I played it back when the camera wasn't updated, and I think a few other things were addressed as well.
@the_beaver i played both games and finished Lair. I tried to like it and was very happy when it was announced. I didn’t like the game, its world, the characters..They should try some new characters.
Dang...has it really be 3 years already? Still doesn't feel like that long...
The game was not perfect and could be very frustrating, but I still liked it a lot (more then impossible lair). I really hope they make a true sequel someday.
