Update: Nintendo has kindly reminded us that its current free trial offer for Nintendo Switch Online ends tomorrow. Make sure to get on it over the next couple of days if you were thinking of signing up (full details and a word of warning about automatic renewals can be found in our original article below).
Original Article (Mon 23rd Aug, 2021 10:00 BST): All Switch owners across Europe can currently claim a free trial of Nintendo Switch Online, even if you've already made use of one in the past.
You can do so by heading to this page on the official My Nintendo website; as long as you sign in with your Nintendo account, you'll be able to grab the free 7-day trial and throw yourself into some online games. Under usual circumstances, using up a free trial leaves you with the option of either paying for a subscription or giving up the service's benefits, so opportunities to claim a second trial don't always come around.
You have until 10th September to claim your trial – just remember that if you do sign up, Nintendo's cheeky system will set you up for an automatic renewal and will charge you for a month's subscription once the trial is over. To avoid this, head on over to your Account Information in the Nintendo eShop, and adjust your automatic renewal settings.
As well as giving you the ability to play games online, Nintendo's Switch Online service also includes access to libraries of NES and SNES games and Save Data Cloud support.

That's pretty cool for the people who don't have it. Too bad I already have online. And I'm not in Europe. And I haven't used a free trial. Why am I commenting again? Oh yeah first.
I don't need a free trial for this virtually non-existent service. Online gameplay should be "free" because you already pay your ISP for your internet. Cloud saves are for people who keep losing their Switch, which isn't me, and there are better and more convenient ways to play old roms of nes and snes games. The free trail isn't worth the effort for signing up.
Damn it, I complained too long and didn't get the first slot.
This service should be on a permanent free trial.
Do people still care about Nintendo online anymore, the service is dire
I can't think of any reason to use the trial other than Tetris 99, really. I haven't been playing enough games that I really need to play online lately.
Nice, my Switch Online subscribtion run out just yesterday ^^
Paid online services are such a con. I just sub when I fancy playing a SNES game and unsub after.
Can't give it away.
Thanks but I think I'll pass
Nintendo, please understand
I think it is well worth the (small) fee, it's a good service. The cloud save is worth it to me in case I lose my beloved save files (especially my 100% Captain Toad and 100% 3D World which I am especially proud of!!)
If we could save to microSD card we wouldn't need cloud saves. Almost like they create a problem, then charge for a solution.
I just discovered that the NES and SNES apps are free on the Japanese eshop. You don't need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to get the apps. So if that is what you are interested in, it might be a better idea to just create a japanese account than bothering with the free 7 day trial.
Removed - unconstructive
Luigi had his Switch stolen
I usually just renew it and currently have it, but I can't stop mention how underwhelming this "service" is.
The selection of SNES games becomes more and more of a joke with trash being added at also sort of embarrassing intervals. The amount of games demanding this is so little, its like you only buy it for one or two games you might own. The app is just a joke. And Nintendo's ambition is just the most laughable aspect in all of this. It doesn't seem like they have anything great in mind with this. Its literally just some weird thing to get some money out of their customers and offer a few things just to keep some fans quiet. But the way all of this is handled demands for someone to get fired and exchanged with someone who brings a bit more passion and love for the community to the table.
@AmplifyMJ I mainly come here to see the moani...I mean opinions. You get some great Spanish soap opera level dramas over the tiniest things.
@AmplifyMJ I know imagine not wanting to pay $20 a year for...no discernable reason.
Numbers must be declining...
I was a sub and would not sign or recommend it to anyone as the service is not very good.
Till they start to offer N64 and GC games, it's not very appealing to me.
@Moistnado yeah that’d be stupid. It’s not the case here.
Bring back the tickets to the US! That was the best thing about NSO tbh
Nintendo's cheeky system. 😂😀😜🤡 Gosh cheeky old Nintendo are at it again. Trying to take your money with a cheeky slight of hand.
We know why companies make these offers, they hope you forget to cancel and you end up paying for your free offer.
Tricky Nintendo would be better than making light of it.
@Moonlessky still have these in Europe - one of the few remaining reasons to keep subscribing other than the occasional decent game trial
@Moistnado
If you're handing out $20, I'll take it
@shaneoh You sound just like Nintendo. I can't see why your offer has any benefit for me.
I’m not sure I can even be bothered to do this. It’s pointless.
To be fair, I have not used anything on the online for years, I haven't got automatic renewal, but weirdly my subscription finishes on the 18 September, a day after the valid until date.
Won't get pass the loading screen after I type in the redeem code.
Nintendo needs to give more incentive to actually subscribe.
..I say as someone who has been subscribed since day 1 and am part of the problem.
(suggests not subscribing to this Nintendo Switch Online for as long as it remains a service for which fees are involved)
I think I’ll renew when Splatoon 3 hits
Nintendo if you want more subs you should probably actually update the service. They barely even add new NES and SNES games anymore. Let alone other legacy platforms.
GB/GBC/GBA? N64? GameCube?
Messaging? Invites? Voice chat? Themes? Player icons?
I love Switch and Nintendo but I am losing patience with their bizarre and illogical refusal to do even the most basic improvements to their services.
Hobbyists in their basements had emulators running on Switch years ago. Fan made patches have given us everything I listed and so much more.
Nintendo even die hard fans like me are running out of patience with you.
NSO is dirt cheap. And it feels dirt cheap too.
Instead of giving it away for free, why don't they fix online play and make it actually worthwhile to pay.
