Re: Best Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 Roguelikes, Roguelites & Run-Based Games

Following from my comment 6 years ago (wow!), "Everspace controls I struggled with aiming", I subsequently realised that the default controls used the right stick to control the ship, not the left one that we've used for such actions since the dawn of time (it is used for looking). Switching these controls transformed the game. I only realised this as a likely problem because Star Wars Squadrons stupidly did the same thing, so thought I should return to Everspace! Note, I play on PS4; not sure if the Switch is the same.

Yes, I still think "roguelike" is the second dumbest term in gaming history ("cosy games" recently overtook it). I'll keep calling them re-runners, and as a sub category, because you're actually doing that, not playing something that's like a game that very few people know about. In most cases, you're not anyway. Everspace is not like Rogue at all. It's a space shooter! Just think, all these diverse games on this list, they get distilled into one category that offers minimal connection between them all (except turning a lot of people off).

@jsty3105 I'm not at all worried. All of these things can and have been happening for the last 15+ years, and yet studios continue to thrive. Good games are successful despite the explosion of indie game developers and frequent massive sales. In an interview on the FPS podcast last month, Edmund McMillen mentioned that Binding of Isaac's sales have actually continued to grow over time. Part of this is probably simply down to the fact that the number of gamers is growing over time, but I also expect that a large majority of purchases are from people that don't know to bargain hunt, or don't care, or have enough income that they don't worry about day one purchase prices. I'm sure I'm also not alone in being happy to pay full price day one to my favorite developers when I know that what I'm getting is worth every penny. Most of Nintendo's games have been missing the mark for me for a while now, so most of my gaming money is going to other devs. Perhaps that's the case for a lot of people, which might be partly why so many indie devs have been able to grow such a following.
I'm also in the camp that believes that high quality gameplay and art direction are far more important than realism, so if the AAA companies aren't getting enough money to fund their next highly-realistic first person shooter... I really don't care.

Still interested in trying it out, but I'm worried for the long term health of Pokemon PvP. Kind of feels like another pick-up-and-drop mobile experience, and I'm wondering if engagement will drop off similarly to TCG Pocket. We'll have to see. It seems a little too one-dimensional to gate behind a bunch of mobile monetization (just single and double battles).

TCG Pocket was fun to play but the battles were too simple, and the social interaction was too limited. And the time-gating forced me to put TCG Pocket down before I was ready to, which made me eventually forget about the app.

Kirby Air Riders is the ideal! The Paddock is the perfect social hub within a game to just jump into a lobby and connect with other gamers. You can see other players and interact with them, you can have a bunch of players in one lobby, and you can spectate other games happening while you're there. It would be the perfect thing for Pokemon, both for Chamions and TCG Pocket. You could show off your decks and card collections to other players in the lobby, and for Champions you could spectate other Pokemon battles happening on the screen. Plus it could recreate that classic Pokemon trope of challenging someone to a Pokemon battle, "in-person." It's frustrating that so few games create a proper in-game social hub, especially when multiplayer is important for it.

It's quite the tragedy, because TOTK is the greatest game of all time despite the fact that BOTW will forever steal its thunder and remain the more iconic entry. Regardless, I am stubborn in regarding BOTW and TOTK as two sides of the same coin. One complements the other; playing one of them always makes me want to go back and experience the other.

The one thing that frustrates me is a lack of support on Nintendo's part. A 2.0 update could add more bonus content, like scanning BOTW or even other Legend of Zelda amiibo's to summon their spirits in TOTK. If ACNH can get a random content update years later then so can TOTK.

Plus we still haven't gotten amiibo's of the TOTK sages, and they had some of the coolest appearances of the whole franchise IMO. It still feels like Nintendo simply dumped the Switch 2 Editions at launch and moved on.

@flighty And that's why videogames have been devalued to the extent that all the money has be made within like the first 6 months of release and games are expected to be practically free after like 5+ years - I personally don't even need to think about buying PC games since Epic and Amazon and GOG keep giving games away and have only bought a couple of GOG games over the past 7 years (which I could've waited on since one I bought 6 months ago, Phantasie, was in the March 2026 Amazon Prime Gaming giveaway).

I don't think the non-Nintendo pricing strategy is sustainable, particularly with the average cost of game development. It may not be the worst problem but I don't think it's far off.

Nintendo's 'long tail' sales for most of their games remains an enviable thing for other publishers.

Just played the Demo on Steam. Thoroughly impressed. The visuals, voice acting and music production quality are something else. The base gameplay is like Shovel Knight (or Ducktales) and dials it up with some thoughtfully neat mechanics that will no doubt have me coming back to levels once further upgrades are unlocked on the adventure. You even have to consider degrading your upgradable staff (on the fly) to make it past bosses and platforming sections. The demo is clearly just is the tip of the iceberg, but it has impressively thoughtful level design that really meshes into the overall visual style and animation going on around you.

So what's funny is, my wife didn't know much about Mario 2, Star Fox, or Mario Galaxy - and her personal sentiment to the movie was similar to the reviews out there. She didn't even say she didn't like it, but it was really a Mario deep-dive. Honestly that's what I was hoping it would be and I loved it ha - my kids enjoyed it too and are wanting to go back. Definitely can't afford seeing it again anytime soon though!

@TheFunkyPhantom Ohh I'll have to try that then, thank you!

@bleeflooflah Yes! After you buy them, the icons are tied to your NSO account forever! Even for games I haven't bought yet I can't help but compulsively snatch up most of the icons, in case I buy the game later. It's a perpetual collectathon once you get hooked on it. Your NSO icons have their own game collection in your profile menu on the NSO page. You can go back and browse the icons sorted by each game, which can feel like a little selection of artwork if you collect them all.
