@Anti-Matter This is random, I know, but just in case you weren't aware of it, check it:

I've only been commenting on this website for a little bit, but I've been a lurker for ages. I just read this, and immediately thought of you, ha. Figured you would have commented on a Just Dance review, and here I am.

Re: Review: Slave Zero X (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, But A Hot Mess On Switch

@Vyacheslav333 Game Maker Studio is designed for 2D games, however. So doing a 3D game in Game Maker just isn't a great idea, the graphics pipeline isn't designed to handle 3D which is why it runs slowly.

Unity from a technical standpoint is much better for a 3D game, from an ethical standpoint, maybe not so much.

Unreal Engine games can be blurry, but that's usually developers using a low resolution to make the game run on Switch and then applying something like TAA, which won't work well with low resolutions and framerates. Unreal Engine games can look fine on the Switch, but a lot are blurry because they're trying to run very high-end games on a very low-end system. As Slave Zero X isn't a high-end game, using Unreal Engine 4 for it, for example, should have been perfectly fine on the Switch.

Even Nintendo use Unreal Engine for their games on the Switch now.

@NoLife If they were bigger, they'd likely cost more to make not less, as they'd still have to use the same boards internally, just with more plastic on the outside, much like the Western NES carts mentioned in the article. It would also mean the Switch would likely be bigger to accommodate them, undermining its portable nature.

Ya, I remember the coloured transparent-shelled consoles and controllers that were popular through out the later 90's. N64 went the hardest, but PS1 & Dreamcast also dipped their toes in it as well. But at the same time, I've always been kind of thrown off by the fact that you can see the internal controller guts & wires.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/zYkAAOSwQkJiD1aP/s-l1200.webp

Nintendo seems to be done away with it, but they did a fine job with the Neon Pink & Green handled Black Splatoon 2 Pro controller and maybe The TOTK Pro Variant, sort of. Problem is, they're all pretty much boasting the same old black middle base with some distinct accent or coloured handle.

https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/ba402781-37e3-414a-8bd5-97474cb54ba8.0c0c70e739ef649e6886e34b68c0c6f3.jpeg?odnHeight=612&odnWidth=612&odnBg=FFFFFF

And I'd say the Duel Sense is hands down the nastiest looking controller Sony has ever come out with. It's greyish off white, matte black two-tone design, with colourless X, square, O & Triangle buttons and awful tacky lights emitting from the touch pad make it look like some dismal sterile boring abomination.

Haptics & adaptive triggers are great though, and it has lower latency compared to the Switch Pro. I just hate the look of it, that's all. It doesn't, at all, convey the fun factor, uniqueness and character from most of the controllers that graced the 90's. Even the original Dual Shock-less PS1 controller looked fun!

That's disappointing to hear. I thought the game looked really promising from the reveal trailer at TGA's. I thought it actually looked a little better than the new Prince of Persia, to be honest--and I loved that game, despite not being a big metroidvania guy.

I watched about 10 minutes' worth of preview footage of the game yesterday, though, and it did seem a bit barren in terms of places to explore and collectibles to find. Even the visuals seemed a lot more simplistic; I was watching footage of the Switch version, so I guess they must've had to cut out a lot of textures unlike Prince of Persia, which was developed with Switch in mind first and foremost. Bit of a cruel stroke of fate these games released so closely together, which makes direct comparisons inevitable.

I'm not a proponent of forced diversity, but even if Sweet Baby Inc is involved with this game, that wouldn't dissuade me from buying it. I was really moved by the lead developer's speech at the Game Awards. You can tell he has a passion for gaming (he referenced Kingdom Hearts on stage) and teared up as he discussed the grief he felt over his father's passing, which is the main theme of his game.

The problem with forced diversity is that it's often so inauthentic. But the narrative this creator wanted to tell feels like a very authentic story to me about his African heritage and personal journey to find healing after loss. Even though I don't know if I'll pick the game up anymore based on its apparent shortcomings, I still have mad respect for the creator and hope he continues developing.

As much as I don't like the idea of thinking we need to meet certain quotas when it comes to representation, it's just objectively true that there aren't a lot of games where the main character is black. I think there's a good amount of black representation in all other forms of media--movies, TV, music. But games? Not so much. (I don't count games where you customize your avatar and can change their skin color.) I like immersing myself in different cultures, but gaming is largely a Japanese-dominated industry, which is one of the most ethnically homogenous countries out there. Americans make lots of games too, but they're often just glorified movies with quick time events--more "video" than they are "game," imo. I'm not interested in playing those, even if they are more culturally diverse.

So when a company comes along and makes a game in a genre I like, that's made with heart and about a character who is black by a developer who is black... I think that's cool, and I want to see more of it. We need stuff like this that's made with passion--not because a company just wants to pander to a certain audience so they can get more of their money. Consumers can tell the difference.

Disney had all kinds of culturally diverse movies in the 90's and early 2000's: Aladdin, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, etc. No one was calling them "woke" back then, and it's not just because politics are getting more radical. They were great movies. But Disney has lowered the bar and thinks that just because they cast a minority lead, it should absolve their boring and lazy films from all criticism. The live action Little Mermaid was a chore to sit through, for example. Representation shouldn't be a shield to hide behind; it should be a sword to hold proudly.

This has probably turned into incoherent babbling at this point. I have a lot of thoughts in my head but am having a hard time articulating them. I hate to see this game wrapped in the middle of a culture war, though--I really don't think it deserves this. I say that as a relatively "conservative" guy.

@NotTelevision Yes, and this game got a 6 out of ten. There's too many metroidvanias on the Switch alone that's better worth my attention.

There's a list on Steam called (Sweet Baby Inc detected) that compiles all games that had been helped by Sweet Baby Inc.

I only brought this up because an article similar to this one was blowing up to a convo also similar to this one.

@tobsesta99

@NotTelevision

If you think I'm crazy, go ahead.
I'm just asking to not go on a shame game on other people on their habits.

Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Will Reportedly Feature Magnetic Joy-Cons

Why is everyone assuming magnetic Joycons would lose the signature Switch click, and would not use any kind of hinge to snap it in place? The rail system has a hinge that snaps the Joycon in place, and the magnetic Joycons probably will be similar, with a button to release the hinge before pulling them off. There's no way Nintendo would make the Switch 2 Joycons connect solely with magnets.

I've believed for a while that Nintendo needs to design a new way for Joycons to click into place for the Switch 2, so I'm all for this.

As long as the new console is named Switch, it will retain a clicking sound for the controllers. That's the Switch's quintessential hardware characteristic.

@FreasurePlanten You thought that was fun? It bored me to tears. The control feels floaty and imprecise (and laggy). It sure looks nice (nice main character animation too), but it is basically a walking simulator where you can glide (sometimes). That’s it. Everything shown in the trailer shows nothing new than what I experienced in the demo.

Unfortunately it’s a very hard pass for me now

The extra space can actaully be answered by the other game selected. It's well known that Nintendo are masters of code compression. Plaion... and every other western publisher not so much. That extra space is litterally there for the sake of extra storage for the 3rd parties.

If not that, it was future proofing. That Let's Sing is a late life game, while Oddessey was done before the system was even announced, so it's on the lowest end of the spec and space size possible. Just compare Super Mario Bros to 3. While it doesn't quite take up the full size of the NES cartridge, because Famicom, it's still MASSIVE compared to the original.

@versionfiv Well, if the tech is there, then ok! Mind you, I can't imagine how much confidence (not sure that is the word, but can't think of another) I would have held together with magnets. It's a similar kind of feeling to using a touchscreen as a controller. It might work, but it doesn't feel...I dunno...tactile? Bah, I know what I mean lol.

B-S : next Nintendo console will have NO separate joycons ( its form factor will remind that of Switch Lite ) and the TV connection will be wireless ( like in WiiU ) , the quality of games will be the same for handheld and TV , also ( like WiiU ) it will be able to use " dual srceens " - Tv and handheld !

@dartmonkey chances are the videos the creator of this article are being served up to them by the algorithm so it's not any bias on what gaming channels they want to push (there's hundreds of high quality ones out there) it's just going to be a strangely different looking selection of videos than what someone else's algorithm is feeding them on a daily basis.

@DarkTron Which specific Youtubers are we advertising?

Even if it's been covered elsewhere in the past, I don't remember seeing the inside of a Switch cart before. My hunch is that it'll be interesting to many readers for whom NL is their main gateway to Nintendo-related content.
