Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond: Secret Ending And How To Get It

Lilligant562

I'm barely 25% into my own casual run lol [spoilers]just got past the plant Boss Carvex[/spoilers] - and barely ever 100% complete games - so naturally I had to visit here.

And Samus? Well she looks beautiful, much like the rest of the game overall! And I'm unsure just what was going on with her face in the Prime 1 re Master (weirdly horse faced) , so was a bit worried they would mess her up here too but - anxiety dismissed! 😭😅

She is sporting a more 'mature' face than her younger or 'girlier' looks in Other M and Corruption.

Prime 4 carries the flame 🔥 held high and I am so happy to see it!

Re: Sega Will "Carefully Assess Appropriate Use Cases" When It Comes To "Leveraging AI"

MathByThePixel

I am very against the use of AI in creative areas. However, it has its uses as Sega seems to be referring to here. I work in web development as a one man dev team, and I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be able to whip up snippets of code in seconds where it would previously take hours. It’s allowed me to take on more projects that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Applying this to game development (if done right) would mean cheaper and more efficient game dev, which is attractive to these big companies.

This needn't be overly complex.
Generative AI is the controversial one, using illicitly sourced data to generate derivative slop. This is the corner-cutting and human omitting part of creative work that really gets under people's skin, to the point there is massive backlash when your entertainment product is suspected of using AI slop.
It's troubling that AI generative imagery is advancing to the point that the "look" is recognisable but the actual quality is hard to discern, so actual human works that resemble a potential AI output gets scrutinised unfairly.

AI overall as machine learning to revolutionise internal data structures and studies is another thing. The new elaborate tooling and advanced computational techniques that allow for data modeling studies and planning not possible a decade ago, and you can see "Machine Learning" as a credit emerging in games already.
As a matter of fact, Hirokazi Matsuda has an R&D / Machine Learning credit for Donkey Kong Bananza, and they've been working as a programmer at Nintendo since Galaxy (2007).

MP4 I think has suffered from ridiculous expectations. If they’d produced something very similar to 1 it would have been blasted for not innovating. So they’ve changed it up a little (and only a little) and now it’s being blasted for not sticking closer to its roots. But I don’t care, I’m only a few hours in but so far it’s easy an 9/10 for me.

@wizzgamer As OrtadragoonX mentioned, that was during a completely different time where Moore's Law was still applicable.

The other aspect I wanted to note on your statement is that the NES was using cheap and outdated tech, which is why any of the handhelds at the time were able to output a result that was even comparable. The PS5 was cutting edge on release, using (at the time) to-be-released tech from AMD. The only reason why handhelds today can even approach it is because of how scalable modern games are. Not even a potential PS7 handheld is likely to be able to beat the PS5 in raw compute at the glacial pace we're going now.

@PJOReilly More articles like this please, lets see if we can't force their hand.

Really enjoyed reading this thanks. I also agree with so much too.
When I remember things like the reveal 3d mario, the no glasses 3d, the Wii, they bought so much innovation to the industry. Now we just get repetition of ideas, I particullary but blame to 'marketing', I have this imagination that games makers have a meeting and talk about this amazing idea they have, getting all excited. At that same time I imagine the marketing person looking at the boss and going NO NO NO.
This is why I am a Nintendo fan, the others have just been pushing it looks better which is a bit boring to me.

@countzero Still waiting for my copy to be delivered; so, is that the case? You're getting directions from NPC's? That's a plus in my book. Getting lost was one of the aspects of Metroid that I was wary of. If this game is more directed, good.

@wishmylove It does seem that Nintendo is having a harder time winning over the critics. At the same time their games are selling better than ever, which is interesting. Maybe they have decoupled further from the mainstream trends than they used to.

Ultimately people should decide for themselves. Someone commented that they cancelled their preorder after waiting 18 years for a new Metroid Prime once they saw the Metacritic score. That's pathetic. If I'm a fan I don't refuse playing the game just because some Bruce from Gamerdoodle didn't like it.

Scores aside, the drama around Beyond seems rather silly. While I have not completed the game, the 5 hours I have put in so far feel like a close to perfect re-introduction to Metroid. Scoring Beyond relative to the other games feels unfair-multiple gaming generations have passed. While I understand some of the dislikes about Beyond, they feel like they have received outsized attention and have been a distraction from what is really a phenomenal game.
Like others, I would love to have had an opportunity to have seen Metroid 2025’s BoTW moment. But it feels like a lot of reviewers forget that the first Metroid Prime may have been the original BoTW moment. It was one of the most shocking changes to have experienced as a gamer (unless you count Adventures of Link vs. OG Zelda).
If this is the start of a “new” series, Beyond feels like the right way to bring Metroid back before any additional significant changes.
For those who have been dissuaded by reviews, I encourage you to pick it up. While there are quirks one may dislike or be annoyed by, ultimately, if you enjoy Metroid, and particularly its atmosphere, the first few biomes are amongst the best I have played in any game.

I was totally dreading Myles, but at worst he is a short term annoyance.

Re: Mini Review: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch 1) - An Impressive Version If You've Yet To Upgrade

Banjo-

@Qwiff We really don't know that because the Switch 1 version was unavailable to reviewers. Bear in mind that there is a 120fps mode on Switch 2 and that the game was developed for Switch 1 originally. DF will post another video comparing the two versions that I'll watch because it will make the differences clear. The comment you replied to was referring to the bad quality of the Switch 2 screen mentioned in the DF video of the Switch 2 version.

My biggest surprise is the relatively high score for Other M. Everybody seems to hate it. I had fun with it. The technical aspects were great and I liked a few plot points (especially the "big reveal" at the end). But overall the script was just very dumb. My biggest issue was the stupid reason why Samus can't use all her abilities from the start. "Your weapons are dangerous, you can only use them with my permission" just makes her look weak. "Oh, you just climbed through the inside of a volcano, maybe I should allow you to use the varia suit" was just silly. Just go with "Oh no! Suit malfunction" like every other Metroid game

I love Prime 4 so far, but your companions going "you have been wandering around for five minutes, why not try that door over there" is a bit annoying. I could also live without Miles briefing me on where to go at the beginning of an area. But to be fair, the ship's computer in Metroid Fusion does the same thing and that is probably my favorite game in the series

Re: Review: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (Switch 2) - Samus Returns In Prime Form

Dr_Lugae

@MrStark Its a ~80% because that's an average some reviews will like it more than average, others will like it less there's always going to be a range of opinions. Reviewers aren't robots who'll uniformly hand out the same score to the same game.

If you think someone scoring it 1 point higher than average is wrong do you think the people scoring it 7/10 are wrong too for "underrating it".

Some people are ridiculous lol

I’ve only played 1-2 hours yet. Just left Myles. I actually enjoyed having him around. But yeah, the game is a bit lame in the writing and directing department. Nintendo isn’t Naughty dog or Guerilla games for sure. The overall production values are a bit lower than many games that have come in the last 10 years. But I enjoy the game for what it is. Samus bad assyness, all the cool lore, new creatures, beautiful surroundings and music and hopefully later on some fun exploration. I would never have wanted to miss this game even if some reviewer says they don’t mike some aspects of it. I just wanna see for myself whats on offer.

Re: Metacritic Shares Updated List Of "Every Metroid Game, Ranked"

I think SkillUp had the most insightful review on Beyond whether you agree with the conclusion or not. Beyond would probably have been considered on-par with previous MP games had it come out 15 years ago. It didn't though and in the decades since the first agme the design for Metroidvanias has evolved significantly. Hence I think one's ranking strongly depends on where you are coming from:

If you come from the OG MP games or Remastered, you probably want more-of-the-same in a fresh coat of paint. Beyond does that, albeit with some making-it-worse additions.

If you come from modern Metroidvanias or even Dread though it probably feels stale at best and backwards at worst.

I wish Retro had settled on what they wanted to do with it. The troubled development clearly shows. I'm super burned out on anything "open-world", but even I can see that a proper BotW'esque MP game could have been seminal. That is not the path they went with though. Then they should have stuck with their guns and give us MP Remastered 2.0. That they also did not abide by.

Re: Japanese Charts: Well, Look At Who's Snuck Back Into First Place

Not surprising. I bet people are doing their holiday shopping right about now as well and Mario is just more popular than Kirby. I'm a bit saddened by the sales numbers for Age of Imprisonment. I'm currently at 57% completion of TotK, so by the time I finally 100% it, it'll probably be on a big sale. Which is sadly what happens fast with Warriors type games, but a blessing to my wallet.
