In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link is more of a living, breathing character. He always has been, of course, but in the upcoming Switch / Wii U title you need to manage his clothing and diet to keep him healthy and ready for the environment. You'll need to catch, cook and prepare food to get through the challenge.

It turns out that the 30th Anniversary Legend of Zelda amiibo, which are out now, help with this. Nintendo used its Tumblr page - because it's down with the kids y'all - to show off how the amiibo help. They deliver useful items (probably limited to once a day, but Nintendo hasn't specified that yet) that simply fall from the sky.

Each [amiibo] will offer random items you can use in the game when used with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Legend has it, you may even receive a treasure chest with a rare item if you're lucky?!

- 8-bit Link will reward you with a random number of barrels. You might find rupees inside too!
- Ocarina of Time Link will reward you with a random amount of meat.
- Toon Link will reward you with a random amount of fish.
- Wind Waker Zelda will reward you with a random selection of plants.

It seems like a useful (and simple) way to support the figures in the game. Breath of the Wild will also have its own amiibo range that will possibly do more, while Wolf Link (from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD) will bring the character into the world as an assistant, too.

Let us know what you think of this amiibo support in the comments.

With thanks to Benson for the heads up.
