Since 3DS Home Menu Themes went live in October, the Theme Shop has received an onslaught of new content each week. With an already vast range of offerings, 3DS owners are slowly being overwhelmed with what theme to buy and use.
Nintendo’s latest system update for the 3DS – Version 9.3.0-21 – not only solves this problem, but also encourages 3DS owners to purchase even more themes. The new shuffle feature allows users to 'favourite' their top ten themes and alternate / shuffle between them by simply turning their 3DS on, or activating Sleep Mode.
In addition to this nifty Theme Shop feature, 3DS users can now also take a photo of the HOME Menu including both the upper and lower screen. And as always, Nintendo has finished the latest update with some sweet stability, with minor adjustments made to "enhance the user experience".
The official changelog is below:
- A Shuffle Favorites feature has been added under Change Theme in HOME Menu Settings. Users can choose multiple themes and have their theme change when the system is left in Sleep Mode from the HOME Menu or turned on after being off
- Available software updates can now be downloaded from the HOME Menu
- Users can now capture screenshots with both the upper and lower screens included
- Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
Let us know what you think of the latest 3DS system update, and if you believe the new shuffle feature will encourage you to buy even more themes.

"Users can now capture screenshots with both the upper and lower screens included"
Can we take screenshots of gameplay? I want that. I want to share pictures of my pokymans. Let me show you them!
@Tsurii897 This'd be a pretty good cover, many will start shufflin' their home menus and forget/not hear about that rumour. I for one am glad if they patch it, despite maybe habing honest creators, these things quickly turn into a wholwhole mess of piracy and hacking
@Tsurii897 I think we can take that as a given with any update
I believe this update also includes amiibo options for the New 3DS. Software updates from the Home Menu sounds good too.
@JeffreyG Really? I haven't joined in all of the amiibo fun yet since I only have a 3DS.
@Tsuchinoko I don't have a new one either, just saw it on YouTube.
The ability to download software updates from the home menu instead of having to go to the eShop is a large improvement !
@JeffreyG oh wow cool! Thanks for telling! =D
@Tsurii897 please either cite a source or offer video evidence that the Cubic Ninja exploit has been patched up...
@StarDust4Ever The maker of the hack said it himself...
Shuffle and new Button at the themes end are nice.
But I still have one problem - my Hakuoki 3D wont update.
There is a message about update, but there is none in eShop.
New update download says - downloaded, but.... nothing changed.
Yes the update includes amiibo for NEW 3ds.
@Liam_Doolan @ThomasBW84
I think I read on IGN that they've also added the amiibo settings on the NN3DS where you can modify your amiibos. 'Not sure if it's true.
Yes, amiibo settings are in for the new 3DS. It's exactly the same as the Wii U's amiibo settings menu. Also, just like the Wii U, the amiibo functionality has been patched in before any title can use it. Hopefully it means SSB will be updated soon.
Here's hoping they do themes for Wii U
@SeVok absolutely agree with this!
Apparently, 10 themes are able to be selected to be shuffled.
The fact that they patched Ninjhax while leaving the much more despicable, PIRACY-ONLY SKY3DS unscathed is kinda gross.
A nice tall glass of stability.
Both random shuffle and picking up to 10 favorites is a great move by Nintendo, almost one of those why didnt they do this when they launched themes things.
Well done Nintendo, well done.
PS - When you make the portals for the old 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS please remember there are 40 million of those out there so dont limit the run to 20k of them. They are small, people will lose them and need to buy more.
Scrap the shuffle option. All that matters is the stability . Well for me anyway. The more stability, the better; I say.
Alright. I'll be fine for now with the basic color themes, but maybe if I have extra cash lying around in the future, I'll buy some holiday specific ones.
I guess "improved stability" includes fixing exploits and blacklisting flashcarts, and it's good they don't mention any of that separately.
@SeVok I agree! But... you can go to the settings to download updates. It's been that way as long as I can remember. ;D
I updated my New 3DS XL, and I can confirm that this adds in a new Amiibo settings menu item to the home menu, under the same place you adjust brightness, select themes, toggle wireless communications.
It also appears to add a link to the eShop alongside the system settings link, which is nice.
Shuffling themes. Nice!
I got this last night along with the Skyward Sword theme, and I love it! Mine shuffles between that, A Link Between Worlds, and Smash Bros.
What's the point of screenshots of you can't send em to a friend? coughs Swapnote
sweet, great idea to shuffle and also the software updates made simpler...
Bye, Ninjhax... Fun while it lasted I guess. (Nah, couldn't purchase a copy of Cubic Ninja before prices soared anyway.) Glad they at least added new features rather than pushing out an update just to kill Smealum's months of painstaking hard work.
Wonder how Sky3DS and Gateway fared from the latest "stability" attack. Time 2 check GBATemp.
"Available software updates can now be downloaded from the HOME Menu"
Took them long enough.
@Crimzonlogic
Can't you do that through Miiverse already? I don't really know since I haven't touched 3DS Miiverse.
@AVahne You can, but only if a community exists, and also only if the community allows it.
No such luck for Pokémon ORAS for example.
It would also just be nice to save screenshots of games without having to upload something to Miiverse and be online all the time. At least you can save up to 3 posts whilst offline.
@RupeeClock
Ah, that's really too bad.
Since Game Notes takes a screenshot of whatever was on both screens when you hit the home key, it'd be nice if they could let us save screenshots from there especially since it's a system app.
Haven't bought any themes, don't see the point. Would get a Wario one if they ever released one...
@AVahne Frankly, that's exactly what I would like as well.
ahhh, moar stability...
Interesting that they would target the non-piracy homebrew and leave the piracy flashcarts alone. People that had been using Cubic Ninja for homebrew are now just going to turn to flashcarts which is going to reduce sales. Yet another questionable move by Nintendo this decade.
We're close to maximum stability, I think!!!
Btw: I really like the shuffle function for the themes. Made me download some more right away. The thing that was keeping me was that I'm too lazy to change them all the time. ^^
i wonder if gateway still works on 9.3... if not, then good job nintendo! (although I have to say, I was a bit tempted to use it with 9.2 software )
Now, all we need is a bigger selection of themes to download.
I never know when there is a software update for my games so being able to update them on home menu would be a good thing.
Everyday I'm shufflin'~
