Chicago commuters were treated to a slightly unusual start to the working week as they were given the chance to take a ride on the Luigi Express.
To promote the "Year of Luigi", Nintendo of America has transformed one of Chicago's L-Trains into a Luigi train, suitably decked out in promotional artwork for the retail release of Luigi's upcoming eponymous game, New Super Luigi U. The interior and exterior both became awash in green, which certainly stood out against the Chicago backdrop.
Travelers on the Brown, sorry... Green Line got the chance to meet the mustachioed hero himself and those passing through the Clark/Lake Station were given the opportunity to get a hands on trial of the game at specially installed booths.
Mario has already been forced into the shadow of his leaner, greener brother this year with a number of Luigi-centric releases such as Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, both for the 3DS. New Super Luigi U is available on the Wii U eShop now with a retail version releasing on 25fh August.
And if you missed the chance to travel green, worry not as the train will be kitted out in its Luigi theme until 8th September.

Gahh. Too bad I only ever take the Red Line around Chicago.
Freaking awesome!!
Hahaha awesome!
Haha, that is so cool!
Ah, that's a reason for Seamus to come back to Chicago.
I have yet to ride that train,glad it's around 'til the 8th of September. They actually have the full game to play there. Me,my Nephew,and some random guy finished it while we were there. lol
I'd take a plane to catch that ride, it's the most amazing public transport advertisement ever.
Looks like I am randomly taking the L this week.
@siavm haha me too
Now this is cool advertising
I remember referring to it as the "el" train myself, cuz like, it's short for "elevated...."
WWWWWHHHHHYYYYY!!!! I was literally in Chicago and rode the L a week or so ago.
It's still cool but I wish I could've seen it in real life.
Thats a pretty awesome way to advertise
Guess Nintendo finally got the message about advertising.
I'm impressed it's advertising Luigi U and not Luigi's Mansion as the 3DS usually gets all the love.
Now all they need to do is swap out Nintendo Land for NSMBU and they sell a ton of these.
For those thinking they should bundle WW HD or SM3DW, well I can't really aruge w/ that, but those games are new so they'll sell on their own, people buying a Wii U with NSMBU will buy those other games. PLUS, and this part is important - will people still buy NSMBU for $60, and Luigi levels for another $20 or $30, when they can buy SM3DW instead? And also Sonic and Rayman. How many 2D side-scrollers do you need?
That's awesome!!! Chicago rocks!!!! (I rode the L-Train back when I once visited Chi-town)
I live near Chicago, so I might have to check this out sometime!
That's awesome...
That's one good lookin train.
Awesome work Nintendo, keep this attention-grabbing advertisement plan up.
If only this had occurred last week ... when I was there.
This is so cool :3
I wish I could ride a train with Luigi~
That'll certainly be a surprise for the Monday morning commuters. It would certainly cheer me up on a Monday morning going to work.
Oh weird, I was just in Chicago all weekend and totally didn't see this.
Now that's pretty cool......OH how I wish they did this here in Philly >_<
Who says Nintendo doesn't advertise?
Whats even more surprising was Luigi wasn't mugged and killed in Chitcago.
id go there JUST for this!
@rjejr
Fair point, although when it comes to the masses, sometimes a bundle needs a "newer" game to garner enough attention. Super Mario 3D World will amost surely become a bundle this December, and I don't foresee Nintendo doing 2 Mario Bros bundles (though I could be wrong). Maybe The Wonderful 101 or Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze?
SWWWEEEETTTT!!! GO GREEN THUNDER!
Haha this is pretty cool =)
Wow!!! I wish they did that for one of the trains I take in NYC.
That is freakin' awesome!!!
@KingofSaiyans
YES! I agree 1000%!!!
Nintendo finally doing it.
I wish I were there
@JaxonH - I think it will and probably should be SM3DW but from my own buyer's remorse perspective I hope it isn't. Though maybe Nintendo Land will be good.
I don't see W101 as a viable bundle. Ship a new IP nobody knows about w/ a console everybody thinks is a Wii accessory? I'm loving the W101 demo, but I don't see it as a big system seller. That game will probably be $20 by Christmas thru no fault of it's own. DK:TF could certainly work though.
But if Nintendo really wants to sell consoles we both know they need a Wii Fit U or Just Dance 4 bundle. Many Wii owners won't upgrade w/o a causal game and the hardcore will be looking at PS4 and X1 this holiday. SSB and Kart to the rescue next year.
Thanks again for all the Miiverse info, printed it out and going to try it out now.
@rjejr
Yeah not a problem. I actually really enjoyed Nitnendoland- well, parts of it anyways. Some of the games are too simplistic, but let me tell you- the Zelda, the Metroid, and the Pikmin are pure gold. The game is definitely better than I anticipated, that much is for sure.
Yeah, you might be right about W101 not being the right game for a bundle, simply because it IS a new IP. But from what I can tell, it's a great game, and one that is Nintendo-owned and published, so I'm not sure if it'll go down in price that quickly. It's possible, but usually critically well-received games (especially Nintendo games) take years to substantially drop in price.
I like the idea of a DKC Tropcial Freeze bundle- it would probably be a good one to sell the core base (like us), but a Mario game could sell the rest. I'm not sure if Nintendo will want to go the route of bundling a casual game or not. I think they're trying to rebuild the brand after the Wii shovelware fiasco, which is evident by the ZombiU bundle. On that same note, isn't it a shame so many core gamers will go straight to PS4 and dismiss Wii U entirely, when Nintendo has so many excellent games coming to the system? I think so.
Btw... Pikmin 3 is a phenomenal game imo. You just got your Wii U right? I would like to personally recommend Pikmin 3. I haven't felt like this from a game since the Metroid Prime days on the Cube.
WOOOO! I'm the one playing with Luigi in the picture! WOOT! He was so much fun and hilarious - it was awesome to meet him. And that NSLU was a pretty fun game just made everything better. I wrote about my experience and uploaded pictures on my blog Lou-Cyo Reviews: http://loucyoreviews.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/all-aboard-the-luigi-line/ .
@PsycLou that is pretty cool man!
Chicago rules!! best city in the USA
Initiative level: Nintendo
Whoever thought of this idea deserves a cookie, a green cookie.
@JaxonH - Forgot about Nintendo owning W101, so I guess it may not go down in price right away then even if it doesn't sell. Kirby's Epic Yarn may have gone down though, but Return to Dreamland is still $50. The Nintendo - Platinum Games partnership is a tricky one. Nintendo certainly is advertising it though, ad that's a really good thing. Pikmin 3 and NSMBU still don't have demos on the home console. Guess they figure a new IP needs pushing.
I waited to buy a Wii U until Pikmin 3 came out, we will be playing that. I just need to pay off my Wii U first before I buy it. Can't have my cake and eat it too. (I was so sure Nintendo would have bundled it.)
@rjejr
I hear ya. At least there's the Pikmin mini game in Nintendoland to hold you over until then.
@JaxonH - BTW, saw Madagascar 3 today w/ the kids - free showing - your profile pic would approve. I know it's a kids movie, but it was still funny.
@rjejr
Nice... I liked the first 2 actually- even at 29 years old I still enjoy those movies. Ice Age as well- ole Scrat and his acorn lol. My profile pic is actually from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It's one of the penguin Vikings that take over Donkey Kong Island.
Cool!
