Re: Hardware Review (In Progress): Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch

weelz79

I think what’s being criminally undersold here, is just how well original Switch titles are running on this thing. “The Witcher III,” “Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2” (a game rendered nigh unplayable)—both titles that have yet to be updated—are revelations on this new hardware. Even pared back “miracle ports” like “Doom” look and play staggeringly amazing. I’ve only purchased “Mario Kart World” thus far, but I’m having a blast playing my previous library and seeing how the Switch 2 gives them a second life. For me, that’s worth the hefty cost of admission.

You know…this is beyond stupid. They’ve had plenty of time to hone and perfect these titles which two of three should run flawlessly. I expected some level of compromise for “Arkham Knight” but it’s damned near unplayable. The “Metal Gear Solid” and “Arkham” collections were what I’ve been hoping for since the Switch’s conception. I just don’t understand the point of bringing half-assed ports to a larger audience while at the same time claiming it’s the hardware’s fault (which is ludicrous). A total waste of money and the worst ports of these fantastic games on any platform. Pathetic.

The 30 fps cap is “interesting.” It appears a stylistic choice rather than an actual caveat, as it doesn’t affect gameplay or the overall smoothness of playability in the slightest. It’s a little weird that a system that is more than capable of providing these games at 1080p/60Hz hasn’t offered the ability to do so, but the games look and play as well as they ever have. I would’ve given this an 8.

Re: Feature: What's The Best Version Of Street Fighter II On Nintendo Systems?

After all these years, I still adhere to the Mega Drive version. Nintendo was in their “squeaky clean” phase during the time of these ports (thanks Howard) and as a result the first two releases on SNES were censored. The Mega Drive had more and better animation (I.e. Continue? screen) and the only real flaw were the horrible voice samples. I’ll take Sega’s six-button pad over the SNES’s milkbone any day of the week.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Highlight Of Your Game Collection?

I was fortunate enough—at the time—to own “Radiant Silvergun” and “Panzer Dragoon Saga” for the Sega Saturn. Financial responsibilities forced me to sell them (I regret my decision for “Saga,” as “Radiant” is available via Xbox LIVE Arcade.
Currently, I have an original copy of “Final Fantasy VII” from 1997, and (I’m not sure it it’s worth much) “Virtua Fighter 3 tb” for the Sega Dreamcast is the ONLY home console edition of that which has me still holding on to my Dreamcast…which I purchased at launch.

Re: Video: What Was Your First Video Game Ever?

Hmmm…my first coin-op experience was “GORF”, a beat up cabinet located in a dingy poolside lounge area in a hotel where my brother and I used to swim. I was too small to play (it was a pretty elevated machine, my hands could barely touch the dashboard) but I loved the sound—the title was announced by a “Steven Hawking-like” voice.

My first console experience was the original “Castlevania” on NES. That was 1987, so the game had already been out for a year or so in the states…I was late to the party. After begging and pleading with my parents to get me an NES for Christmas, I finally received the basic bundle (packed with two controllers and “Super Mario BROS.”); they threw in “Castlevania” for good measure.

I still play the original “Castlevania” more than any in the series. The nostalgia is strong in that one.

Re: The Mega Drive Mini Is Getting Another Accessory Which Does Absolutely Nothing

I never owned the Master System converter, but I did have the first generation Sega-CD and 32X. While this totem of Sega goodness wasn't a total eye sore, the amount of power consumption emited by this construct must've been massive. They required AC outputs for each console (and they were all bricks that required two or three slots). I'm pretty sure the lights dimmed whenever I turned it on.

Re: Soapbox: It's Time To Normalise Giving Up On Games Early

weelz79

My (not so) hidden shame...never finishing “Final Fantasy VII.” I have original copy of the 1997 release collecting dust. I made it near the end, but I was at friend’s house who also owned a copy and he completed it before I had the chance. I lost the incentive and have moved on. One day...

Re: Review: DOOM Eternal - This 'Impossible' Port Is Nothing Short Of A Miracle

weelz79

My initial grievance with "Doom 2016" was the slowdown. The framerate and low-resolution were hardly a game-breaking deal, but I found the chugging at certain points to be a real pain that definitely hampered the ports playability.
"Doom Eternal" eliminates that aspect right from the get-go! It's an amazing achievement, and I'm really happy with my purchase (I double-dipped seeing as I already own it on Xbox One X).
Now, what Id' REALLY like to see, is future patches for "Doom 2016" and "Wolfenstein." I have a feeling they can still hone those titles, considering the landmark work they've accomplished with this...
