I just hope Netflix didn't buy them to deliver this stuff on a regular basis projected onto whatever franchise they come up with.
It works for Oxenfree as I'm playing Oxenfree to experience exactly this kind of game. I can imagine I'd quickly lose interest if theres now a Stranger Things or Ozark game playing in the same way.

Gotta say I wrote Ozark to make some point but also I might be more interested in that than I'm ready to admit.

"I don't consider any of the "games" that have seeded micro transactions actual games. If you make a game that way you're a piece of s.h.i.t.e and are preying on people."

I'm wondering if people said the same thing about Nintendo when they did Donkey Kong on the arcades, asking for a coin evertime they die, making it so addicting, people had to toss all of their savings into these machines.
Its a different business model but if the devs behind that aren't *****, they can come up with quite nice games as well.
Like with all games, this only applies to a small percentage, but same can be said about the Wii library.

Re: Apple Made More Profit From Games In 2019 Than Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft Combined

@NEStalgia I partly disagree: I'm happy about gatchas being profitable (Mario Kart Tour also sorta falls into that for me) because if this industry makes like 10 billion dollars, it still affects our more traditional industry in a positive way as it gets some people looking for more on board. I guess its not a lot as this heavily casual driven industry is pretty much its own bubble, but I guess everything helps and while I've never been among those who would predict the end of traditional gaming with the rise of mobile gaming, I'm surprised how mobile gaming is somehow even more incapable of delivering actual console like experiences than I would have thought.

And I'm not taking about tech, as it can do pretty much everything you could wish for. But the use cases are limiting mobile gaming towards an endless future of being stuck in this freemium-arcade space. All marvelous attempts to deliver really deep experiences just didn't sell enough and in some cases studios even moved from mobile gaming to consoles (Everspace) because they couldn't really enfold their ideas as they imagined. And I really can measure this on my own behavior as I stopped caring about mobile gaming a few years ago while being absolutely into finding the best and biggest games on that platform because the whole potential just fascinated me. But today, the deepest stuff people are playing on phones might be Genshin Impact ... which to be fair is actually really a huge and immersive deal but in the end just a very, very, well bown up mobile game like many before and it seems to emphasize where the limits really are.

The more pragmatic people manage to handle this ***** nowadays, the better imo

Re: Apple Made More Profit From Games In 2019 Than Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft Combined

valcoholic

Theres a lot that other companies can learn and already have learned from companies like Apple which werent't the first names you would think of when talking about games.

#1 is just having one OS across many generations. How I just HATED to have a new OS on the WiiU after the Wii with a new Virtual Console. It didn't make any sense. How I continued this hate with the Switch (don't worry, that got drowned by all the love anyways) again reinventing the OS wheel once again.
I wnt to buy a Switch 2 and just play my eshop downloads there. Cannot be so hard.

#2 provide supercheap stuff. I mean thats not necessry what I need, but its of course one reason why all jumped on board. And ever since the Angry Birds era, devs realized how to make use of this system, what they cannot do there and how to still implement some clever mechanics. It might not be for everyone but then again, console gaming isn't as well.

I mean the most important factors like everyone wanting to distribute on your platform and the graphical power of devices these days both don't really have to do with Apple and games but more with them just selling a zillion devices so of course devs wanna be present on that market and supporting a general variety of apps for camera, film, design and AR so the performance for games just goes hand in hand with that. But sure, gaming might be the biggest market on iOS so I guess its still a main incentive.

I used to be actually superpositive about gaming on mobile devices and try everything out thats not a microtransaction-freemium-***** and there were some really good games o be played. Like when I first played XCom on the iPhoe, it was just absolutely bonkers. That was years before the Switch came and it was a full featured and perfectly working port of the PC game. Absolutely loved that. Somehow completely lost interest in that platform ever since the Switch landed, but I would still agree that it has its place and just because we love our Switch so much doesn't mean that there can't be a place for other gamers as well.

Re: Mini Review: Antonball Deluxe - Fun With Friends That Like Arkanoid

valcoholic

@AG_Awesome Yeah I wouldn't even say its about opinion but more about the expertise. A guy who's just really experienced with certain genres and subgenres will automatically be more competent. Of course with a game like this one, it might not have been so clear that they would need to get the old wise arcadeguy out of their cave.
I personally just like to read a review from someone where I initially understand how to read it. If an expert of a certain genre tells me that a game sucks, its of course different to a very mainstramy reviewer saying the same thing.

Re: Mini Review: Antonball Deluxe - Fun With Friends That Like Arkanoid

valcoholic

@Noid your comment somehow shows one of many major weaknesses of this rating system.
If you would have to review a great bullethell shooter for the mainstream masses, you could either give it a 9 to make the mainstream curious but also make many purchase it and hate you for that... or give it a 6 as a 6 could either mean its just not so good or that it might resonate with certain audiences.

I'm not sure whats better. I guess if its a page that tries to deliver quality reviews with smart reviewers, attracting smart audiences, then just having a reviewer who's fond of this certain genre and let him give his 9/10 if he loves that niche game and just assume that faithful readers might understand that a review of this certain reviewer might be slightly different tha from the reviewer who only plays FPS. But I can't blame them for not having this certain reviewer or not willing to go down that path. I would expect it from a page like Kotaku as its more targeting geek culture and so on tho

As Amazon got into gaming years ago and even Apple has their own games-subscription, this was just a logical step, even if it feels sorta illogical as a customer. I don't really want this Games-Button in my Netflix library. Whats next? news and music? If they wanna do games, thats fine, but have a dedicated service for that, not some addon. Because as long as they can't go there, it will always show how gaming is just some headline on a revenue report that will quickly vanish, if it ain't milking cash from the get go.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online N64 Game Ranked

valcoholic

@Zanzox 100% agree.
This really is a Nintendo thing. They do a better version of a game to make use of better hardware with the 3DS versions ... and then still publish the older version that must be inferior by their own understanding. Or aren't they standing behind their newer versions?
N64 games aged horribly alltogether. The only game that might still be fun to play is F-Zero X as its at least superfluid. but everything else will be pretty compromised by framerate, polycount, texture quality...
So just keeping the better versions to publish them later eventually at some extracost is ... I mean they dan do it, but its not really the nicest possible thing lol

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online N64 Game Ranked

valcoholic

I think this list is fine. I would've ranked Mario Kart 64 above StarFox 64 as I just have played this game to death with friends but its fine.
And maybe BK would be even ahead of Zelda for me.

In recent years I often thought about the advantages of getting a XBox and finally being able to play BK again was actually one of the biggest incentives. for ... 23(?) years I'm humming tracks of its soundtrack and think of the warm feeling, that whole visual setting produced and the sheer wonder I felt when playing through this game for the first time. I had holidays and just couldn't stop playing this and got through in about a week or so. Oh memories. So of course this is my N1 game on NO, so I'll get the expansion whenever they drop this. Bt if its objectively my favorite N64 game, I couldn't tell. Zelda was big, but didn't really age so well.
I believe Majora's Mask works better than OoT for me as there are OoT-kind of experiences that came after and worked way better like TP.

Re: Poll: Do You Call Handhelds Like Game Boy And Nintendo DS 'Consoles'?

valcoholic

20 yrs ago it made sense to draw a line between home consoles and handheld consoles as they just were going for very different experiences. Ever since 3D became thing though and of course since the Switch, this line has blurred out completely.

If someone would have asked me 20yrs ago if I'm a console or PC gamer, I wouldn't have thought about mentioning the Gameboy (Advance) but today, I can just say I'm a Switch-guy.
Still, Handhelds are console type experiences in terms of closed systems that need as little hardware knowledge as possible and deliver a very focused gaming experience without much more. Thats why an iPad isn't a console while it might offer some things, that cld probably be compared to them.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

valcoholic

While being on the fence whether I should buy it with the WiiU at launch (I then got it from my BELOVED friends for my 30th birthday) and even with the Wii (as it didn't have such a great launch lineup) and buying Gamecube and N64 on day one,
the Switch was the very first Nintendo console I prepurchased with 100% confidence in its success. I really thought I should buy Nintendo stocks at that time as I just knew they're gonna shoot through the roof.

I didn't expect it to be that popular though. But I totally knew that they do so many thing so right, beginning with the ads they aired which looked and felt just like from a different company after the WiiU and so many designdecisions that would make the WiiU feel like a clunky piece of a plastictoy.
(Disclaimer, I still do love my WiiU, so no hard feelings. Just saying how I initially felt back in 2017 when they unveiled it)

It was also just such a great thing to feel this joy about a console release at my age of 35ish when I really didn't believe, games could get me as excited. But BotW on this device. What a time to be alive. Still by far my favorite console of all time.

Re: Alan Wake Remastered Has Been Rated For Nintendo Switch

valcoholic

i believe this might be a 50/50 chance thing.
If they bring it to cloud, they would already be aware that not so many people would like that and that it might cause problems due to people not always having great wifi or people just want to play even when they're offline (and especially casual gamers who arent into newspages might not even know or understand what the difference is)

And the other way would be to take the 360 version and create a hybrid between this and the remaster, how they did it with Skyrim on the Switch. This would be more effort on the production side but also sell better.

Of course I'd prefer the latter, but if "sell better" still wouldn't be above a certain margin, it might still not justify the effort.

Re: Random: Apple's iPhone 13 Pro Max Has A Larger Battery Capacity Than The Nintendo Switch

@Lordplops I mean seriously? This ain't 2006. People arguying that smartphones have much in common with old school cellphones might be 150 yrs old or just denying something. Really don't wanna insult anyone and sorry for the rant, but its just a damn bad argument. I too think paying that much money for tis is too much, but only because I personally just don't feel the need for it. These devices have pretty damn good videocameras. I've once looked for a good cam that would deliver image stabilized 4K video at 60fps with slow mo and so on and this alone would cost a few hundred bucks. And these things can do just so much more. And if one needs it or just has a ton of bucks to give away, then who cares.

About the article: Phones have been way better performing at battery life years ahead of the Switch, are more expensive, completely different devices and not very cool to play jump 'n runs on. So to categorize this story under "Random" seems like a good fit, because thats exactly how I feel about it.

@YusseiWarrior3000 Yeah its a point I guess;
Maybe I'm not frequently enough around on Twitter to really feel that way but I often hear that Twitter has become a vent for passive aggressive hipsters and nerds to let it all out. Kinda sad as I have quite fine experiences so far and generally I guess I do prefer people not always being superpositive about everything like on Instagram, where you will never see anyone critisizing anything ever.

I will never understand why anyone would post a comment like this. I mean I don't like so many things but I wouldn't feel the need to state that in some random feed. Isn't it good that we twitter fanboys have something to feel happy about and you got your own stuff? I believe it is.

Re: New Switch Update Allows Users To Share Longer Twitter Messages

valcoholic

@Ventilator because there are platforms like medium for what you propose.
Twitter has always been about keeping everything as short as possible. As 140 characters just weren't enough in many cases, it got more, but all in all, if you don't get it, then its not for you, which is fine. I for instance don't get TikTok. But opening Twitter and immediately getting a quite nice impression about a lot of different things, news and opinions on one scrollthrough can be a quite good thing.

its also often the only way for some popular persons like game designers to talk to their fans as it doesn't really need muchtime to just write a tweet where they propably wouldn't find the time to always write a complete blogentry.

Thats why it isn't dead.

The Gamecube might have been the most portabe system t that time with some funny accessory BUT as I took it on the road to friends on my bike I can tell that wasn't really so great and after a few sessions it had slight damages as it just wasn't built for that purpose. But was it easier than transporting a PS2? Definitely, that thing was huge.

Re: Metal Gear-Style Retro Stealth 'Em Up 'UnMetal' Hits Switch At The End Of September

With such projects, people often argue that developers should rather spend their time on original work instead of ripping off stuff.
Usually I disagree as for a small dev it can just rocketfire their reputation when it works out. But in this case ... MGS always was like a brilliant singer/songwritersong, so doing this cn only work as a trailer for me. I don't see myself playing this over the original.

Looking at what games like Steamworld DIG, Hollow Knight or Ori did to the Metroidvania formula, I'm wondering why devs like these wouldn't do a Metal Gear style game in a different setting.
I mean Guacamelee took a space adventure game and turned it into a mexican brawlfest and still endet up being a loveletter to Metroid.

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

@johnvboy I'm curious about Netflix.
I was never sure if Netflix (or whatever similar service like Prime) isn't on the Switch because it would just add to the battery drain too much without serving any gaming-related purpose (which I guess isn't the case for Youtube) or because Nintendo was just very cautious how customers should perceive the product like they were with the WiiU, trying to avoid any comparisons with an iPad. I mean, maybe both. But future generations of that concept might answer that as more resources and better battery life should theoretically open the doors to more multimedia-apps and possibilities.

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

@johnvboy yeah looking at how people are just asking for at least folders over and over and over and how Nintendo isn't giving them to them, Its sorta clear to me that this too might have to do with saving memory at least a bit but also that Nintendo might have made this a priority for the next Switch-generation as resources might not be extremely tight as they are this time around.

Re: Chibi-Robo! Inspired 3D Platformer Misc. A Tiny Tale Confirmed For Switch

valcoholic

One thing: Its for a small studio a bit comfortable to create a robot character as you don‘t have to deal with realistic organic textures, animations and especially faces. Which is perfectly fine. BUT: the fact that they didn‘t dare to create any living creatures like a mouse sorta emphasizes that.
When Nintendo does a robot game, then not because they can‘t model a living creature but because they wanna do a robot game. In this case it really feels like it was just easier to so.
as its an indie title this of course isn‘t a bad thing, I would just be careful when comparing it with Nintendo‘s work, even if its an obvious comparison by its looks.

Apart from that I think it looks pretty good. For indies, 3D can easily get way too much effort, so its quite nice to see someone daring to just go for it. Somehow it gave me also Banjo-Kazooie-vibes. I personally just don‘t really like robot-protagonists, as I rarely am able to emphasize with them. It really worked in the Steamworld-games or WallE, so theres a chance.

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

@Buckyooliver in his case you don't have enough games on your system to understand the issue. Which is not a bad thing. But since 2017 and with micro d cards holding half a terabyte of data, many players have collected easily over a hundred items so 'just playing a game' can become either a tedious task as you might have to actively search for it or you end up playing just the games on the mainscreen as going through the big collection might be already too much of a hassle.

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

@sanderev Hey thanks that was a way more in depth answer than I expected. I do agree that its made for speed, but not even having a serach function nor folders still do point into the save-memory-and-battery direction for me. Which still completely work with your part of the story as this all sums up to make even more sense.

I gotta say that I never felt like the menus on the PS4 are noticeably slow though, but this console also uses more power in standby than the Switch powered on, so I really couldn't compare these.

So thanks for your insights, especially the filesize of the UI is a cool detail!

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

@KryptoniteKrunch I do understand you, but having an UI like this wouldn't mean that you would be forced to use folders. If you wouldn't, the UI would work sorta similar to how it works right now and also offer more options for the people who would like that.

Having lost any oversight over this HUGE MESS on my Switch with demos, free to play stuff I barely touch, games I finished, games I haven't finished, favorite games, offline-multiplayer games, online multiplayergames... I absolutely wouldn't argue that folders should be mandatory right now. Often I would just discover a game I completely forgot in my library. Which sounds like a good thing but of course thats pathetic.

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch UI Redesign Makes The Home Menu And eShop Look Like Apple's iOS

valcoholic

I do believe the Switch's UI is held that simple because the Switch's processing power and battery might just be so limited that they decided to get rid of just everything that could eat up any battery. Like Bluetooth Audio which wouldn't be such a hard thing to implement. And the more complex operations the OS allows, the quicker the battery drains. Same goes for apps like Netflix. If someone watches a movie or so and the battery is empty, the experience and the impression of the system will be sorta bad compared to having some gaming memories packed in one battery load.
Looking at the GUI and doing designstuff myself, I can't imagine any other reason as Nintendo of course is absolutely aware of the Switch OS' weaknesses. But if you throw technical reasons into the considerations, it all makes so much more sense.

Best example is the WiiU. While it also had notoriously bad loading times, the WiiU's OS offered everything from a bigger grid to folders and had sorta weird but for me pretty fun 3D animations going on. All of which just was processed on the always-powered console so it all didn't matter.
That Nintendo went back to this simple UI on the Switch had nothing to do with them hating the Switch so much, but just wanting to get the last bit out of the processor which already was aged when it was released back in 2017.
All of this might have been different on the 3DS as I believe that one offered more configuration options but that also wasn't as limited in terms of the ration between processing power and battery as it went up to i believe 8 hours or so?

I usually just renew it and currently have it, but I can't stop mention how underwhelming this "service" is.
The selection of SNES games becomes more and more of a joke with trash being added at also sort of embarrassing intervals. The amount of games demanding this is so little, its like you only buy it for one or two games you might own. The app is just a joke. And Nintendo's ambition is just the most laughable aspect in all of this. It doesn't seem like they have anything great in mind with this. Its literally just some weird thing to get some money out of their customers and offer a few things just to keep some fans quiet. But the way all of this is handled demands for someone to get fired and exchanged with someone who brings a bit more passion and love for the community to the table.

I love the fact (or at least I wish) that people like her can just make a living doing awesome stuff like this. Celeste's Soundtrack is among many, many great things about the game. Re: Video: Check Out This Fan-Made Remaster Trailer For Banjo-Kazooie

valcoholic

Just recently I whistled the Treasure Trove Cove Soundtrack, which is burnt in my memory ever since I played it in the 90ies. With many N64-and-PSX-era games I cn understand why they wouldn't just revamp them in all kinds possible as they often didn't age well enough, neither visually nor in gamedesign as everything was in a very rough stage of development.

But the feeling of just traversing BKs Overworld with this absolutely amazing soundtrack by Kirk Granthope and the way the textures all adapt to all environments ... everything felt so ahead of its time and would totally work with some polishes today.

These trailers would already be nice, but far from what this could be. In the BK-Trailer, it would need better art direction. Some textures are more realistic, some are more comically, some are detailed, some less detailed ... for a sideproject this is just a massive achievement, of course. But for a game I would pay for, I would ask for more refinement and work on the aesthetics .

Like Farnsworth would put it:
"A man can dream;
a man can dream."

Re: Soapbox: The Term 'Indie' Is Losing Meaning, But Maybe That's A Positive Sign

valcoholic

I've been asking for this for a while now. The indie label was necessary 15 years ago when XBLA was suddenly there and games like Braid and FEZ paved the way for a few generations of indie games to come. But when I played Subnautica, I wasn't sure what this is. I assumed it was an Indie game, lowering my expectations in terms of production value and size and then got blown away by how great this game was. I mean, in this case, the indie-label did a good thing as it just bursted through all my expectations.

Still in general the industry has moved forward and Indie games are often not just indie games by one guy like Axoim Verge but can also be a pretty big procject like Ori including several teams across the globe. Plus huge companies like EA missuse the term indie game for "games with heart and soul". I mean its nice that EAs "indie" studios might have more freedom than for instance Bioware while keeping there scale low. But in the end, its something different to a studio like Moebius Digital, which worked like a decade as a students project on a game that would eventually transform into Outer Wilds.
This ain't binary. Its not lie a yes and no. And thus it would be better to kinda change the value of the term "indie". Maybe it doesn't need to completely go away, but just shouldn't be used like a seal.

Re: Talking Point: Every Pre-BOTW 3D Zelda Now Has A Remake, But Which Is Best?

valcoholic

I didn't really love WW on the Gamecube, too focused on just seeing what would annoy me. With this memory I hesitated to buy WWHD at first but the got a good deal and gave it a shot and maybe because of my negative bias was suddenly surprised how much I liked it. WWHD really opened it up for me to absolutely enjoy and appreciate the game and as I got two kids now, it also happened to become that one kid friendly Zelda game we would play over and over and over, taking a special place in my heart. Its funny how I didn't like the idea of not having at least one large island with a horse and an actual Zelda-landscape to explore but with kids, all these little islands become way more fun to discover. So yeah WWHD had the biggest impact on my experience with any Zelda game.

Despite not having played it yet, I still voted for SSHD as most improved game. I watched some reviews (DF for instance) and they didn't just improve it technically with 60fps/1080p and better textures all over the place, they also dramatically tweaked the gameplay with FI, the controls for analog sticks and so many small improvements. In this case I really enjoyed the Wii version and don't feel like I need this, but wouldn't mind playing it again on the Switch now.

Re: Netflix Confirms It's Expanding Into Video Games, Will Be Included At No Extra Cost

valcoholic

@Ulysses no. Netflix claimed again and again that they could support the Switch, but Nintendo wouldn't open it to them. After the WiiU, Nintendo was just very cautious about customers mistaking the Switch with a mobile device like a tablet or an iPhone and to draw a line, they excluded as many traditional apps as possible. I guess they still let Youtube in, because people could watch games related stuff like walkthroughs and so on (although I never use it for that as its easier to watch a guide on my phone while playing). Also assume they didn't want too many video-apps as the Switch' battery wasn't really made for that. Its OK to have short Youtube Videos playing, but in theory the Switch might only play a movie on Netflix which might hurt the impression users would have from the console.

About this whole topic: According to Apple's current terms, they won't allow a service like this one, just like they don't allow Gamepass or XCloud. Stadia seems to be available and I wonder how that works, as its also breaking the rues, but in any case Netflix might not just be able to throw that App onto iOS like that.

Re: Video: Nintendo Releases New Overview Trailer For Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

valcoholic

People who don't know that game should definitely give it a chance. It was and still remains pretty polarizing at might also have beein one of the reasons why Nintendo decided to ditch the classic formula and go full Open-World with BotW, but despite some problems, theres one masterclass of great gamedesign hidden behind some annoyances.

Cons:

  • I never liked the character design. Maybe this ws Nintendo's middlestep on their way to reach that beautiful artstyle of BotW, but I hated how Link and especially Zelda looked like. There were also some cool characters of course, buut the main 2 ones looking like that... ummm...
  • The pain about the handholding with Fi is real. I didn't care too much in my 1st playthrough but when I later got back, this definitely hurt.
  • The idea with motion controls back on the Wii was polarizing, but I remember really liking it for the most part. Bad thing is just, this tech didn't age too well and today if motion controls work 95% of the time, it means that like 5 out of 100 sword hits still miss due to that tech. That's just a rough feeling of whats wring with motion controls. They can feel quite cool and in some cases they actually offer a great value like with that bug-drone, which really feels awesome to steer. But often it feels like being in full control of your actions through classic buttons would feel better as it does in later games.

Pros:

  • if you compare it to music, then just like all classic Zelda games, this is an album filled with absolutely wonderfully composed tracks hence dungeons that all follow an own idea, tell an individual story and manage to show places that still haven't been explored although there wree so many games of that type in that series before.
  • while the motion controls didn't age too good as mentioned, the still can add a lot to what makes this game special and fun. Of course you have to be a bit open minded but its quite cool how Nintendo tried to create this showcase for a ton of different motion control use cases.
  • The concept of having this happen at a beginning of the saga (theres still some story happening before, so its not like its the beginning of time) is quite cool and creates some elements of wonder here and there.

Today's young players should understand that for about 2 decades, Nintendo would create the same Zelda-concept in different shades. Sometimes with water, or with a dark world. But ultimately it was always the same structure and a very similar story that let you really foresee most events and game events. In this game they obviously tried to stick with the classic structure, but try to bend it as much as possible so people wouldn't notice with a different art style, motion controls, that story-setting. In the end, it remained that pretty linear Zelda-experience as they did it since ALTTP or OoT, but also managed to throw so many awesome ideas and concepts at you, it couldn't be ignored.
So people who are into Zelda should definitely have played this. Plus the Soundtrack is still one of the best in the entire series.
