Update [Sun 19th Sep, 2021 11:00 BST]: The same Reddit user 'porcorousseauu' has now taken feedback on board and revised their Switch UI redesigns. Here are the results:
Original story [Tue 7th Sep, 2021 01:30 BST]: Since the arrival of the Switch, users have been calling for Nintendo to enhance the interface of the hybrid system. One of the top requests is the addition of folders, but apart from this, fans would also like to be able to change background colours and even replace them with wallpapers.
Although there's no sign we'll be getting any of this in the future, that hasn't stopped some fans of the Switch from imagining what the device's UI could potentially look like if Nintendo was to freshen it up. The latest redesign by Reddit user 'porcorousseauu' appears to draw at least some inspiration from the UI on Apple's mobile and tablet operating system, iOS.
As you can see there are transparent menus, curved edges, colourful backgrounds and folders, too. There's even a makeover of the Switch eShop. While this obviously isn't the first time we've seen Switch redesign, it's certainly a unique take compared to a lot of previous mock-ups.
Would you like to see Nintendo update the Switch UI? What do you think of the above concept? Tell us down below.

Not bad I suppose. Certainly anything is better than what It is currently. Having a library above 100 games is very unorganized now and im nearing the 400 mark :/
That’s absolutely gorgeous.
It looks really nice, but really hard to move through at the same time.
Darn it, for one second I misread the title and thought the UI was actually getting a redesign 😖
I don't mind the simple current design mostly, it just needs more options. When I am forced to make a spreadsheet on my phone to keep track of my games, the switch UI has kinda failed me.
Looks ugly to be completely honest the current simple design is way better it's why launching and playing games is so fast if they were to make a theme like this it would just make the system extremely slow
That looks like those 3DS themes that required the games to be in a single row to be fully visible, no thanks. The barebones UI would work with the large library if they just added a search function with browse by letter, genre, release year, etc.
Also, achievements? Keep dreaming.
@Ocaz laughs and cries in over 1000
I'll echo that I'm not a fan of this redesign, it looks way too cluttered. I like the simplicity of the current UI. I do think there could be improvements, namely in regards to sorting through a large library, but I don't think a massive overhaul to the system UI is necessary. The eShop, on the other hand, could definitely use some updates.
This looks way too busy and cluttered. The current design, while a bit bland, works perfectly fine and I like it. I think that it would be a great UI if they just added folders.
The Switch OS is as simple as it is so that it only uses up ~0.75 GB of the Switch's memory, leaving the remaining ~3.25 GB for the actual game software.
Having folders and a customizable background would be nice, but anymore than that probably won't happen.
This looks pretty clean, but at the same time a bit too busy. Something between this and what we currently have would be cool.
@SeantheDon29 how do u reach 1000 on this console without buying shovel ware? are you guilty?
It’s a shame that Nintendo doesn’t listen to their fans or any of the feedback that has been consistently been expressed to them.
Looks decent, but i suppose anything is better than what we currently got. The main thing that needs sorting is the eShop. The lag and the amount of shovelware is an eyesore. Trying to find stuff is a nightmare and needs improving.
Ooh I quite like that actually. I prefer function over ‘simplicity’ imo, especially given how bare-bones and dreary the Switch OS is.
“Random” tag is just “we don’t have news so here’s fanart.”
very slick~ interesting how the design is made to fit into one screen rather than scrolling through it. aside from the extra taps it'd take to find games this looks very appealing
That's the most awful UI i've ever seen, it has so many touches to get to where you need to be.It's cute, ill give it that, but thats about it
For all the hate nintendo gets from the switch ui, is one of the most simple and straightforwards out there, clean and precise. It just needs folders, maybe themes.
Looks like it's designed for touch. Just seems impossible to navigate with a controller with tiny buttons everywhere.
I’d much prefer the current UI. It’s simplicity and minimalist design is what makes it good. No messages, no activity log, no achievements, no distractions… just games.
A search function would help out a lot for those with large libraries.
Wow. Silksong confirmed for a shadow drop soon. The mock up is downloading it.
@cainswo literally just finished HK and it was a very fun experience. I’m super hyped for Silksong.
While having a UI is a good thing for modern systems, I would had prefer if they introduced an auto jump to game feature (similar to what the Analogue Super Nt and Mega Sg had) so when you turn on the system it jumps right into the cartridge/digital game you last play instead of always jumping to those ugly UI interface (yes I was never a fan of them ever since the Dreamcrash). We already had a menu button to go to the UI anyways, a jump to game upon start-up feature would be most appreciated.
@Specter_of-the_OLED How would it know which game to auto-jump to though?
Hmm.. I think this looks a little cluttered for my tastes.
I just want FOLDERS & THEMES T^T
Edit: and CHAT
Not really interested in a UI update, but it would be nice to have more color themes and being able to customize the order of icons in the library.
I'd like the Wii's UI sounds & custom backgrounds
I refuse to believe that the company that has produce some of the best video games ever, the same company that makes entire menu screens for thousands of games can come up with something better than what we have, it is too much to ask for a refresh with added functionality every to years?
It looks "nice" because it's new, but also just feels like too much going on for my taste. The current UI may be boring or whatever, but it's fast and works and I'm completely okay with it.
@Curbie Now that I think about it, I am surprised they don’t sell 3DS-like themes. They would probably make a lot of money off of 99 cent impulse buys.
@Ocaz yes. Yes I am. 😩
Way too much junk on the screen. Bad. Stop it.
This looks like absolute trash. I'd 100% rather have the minimalistic design Nintendo gave the Switch.
The problem here is internal memory and RAM. GUIs use way too much of the systems power that is needed for other items. Yeah sure once you click on a game to play the system will switch to what the priority is, but, these set ups would for surely need a bit of them running in the background in order to pull them up quickly and flawlessly when a player exits an app or game.
@Ocaz only close to 800 here, but precisely because I don't believe in "shovelware", so... https://youtu.be/c49TTYE5N3g
I just want Nintendo for the love of gamers to please let us file/label our games somehow. Folders would be the obvious and supposedly easy way. Can't believe it's not been done yet It's such a mess when you get past a certain number of games.
Eh, less is more. All of these Switch UI designs make things too cluttered... The great thing about the current Switch UI is how silky smooth it is. Folders should happen, but not the way they're used here, I dunno.
Each to their own, I never understood the need for a UI with extra fluff.
I think, I should make my own redesign. Just for fun.
EDIT: To bad, you can't upload pictures here. 😕
I would be happy with them just shrinking the tiles slightly, adding in folders and allowing us to put a custom background on. Heck, even just a screenshot from in game would be better than nothing.
I do believe the Switch's UI is held that simple because the Switch's processing power and battery might just be so limited that they decided to get rid of just everything that could eat up any battery. Like Bluetooth Audio which wouldn't be such a hard thing to implement. And the more complex operations the OS allows, the quicker the battery drains. Same goes for apps like Netflix. If someone watches a movie or so and the battery is empty, the experience and the impression of the system will be sorta bad compared to having some gaming memories packed in one battery load.
Looking at the GUI and doing designstuff myself, I can't imagine any other reason as Nintendo of course is absolutely aware of the Switch OS' weaknesses. But if you throw technical reasons into the considerations, it all makes so much more sense.
Best example is the WiiU. While it also had notoriously bad loading times, the WiiU's OS offered everything from a bigger grid to folders and had sorta weird but for me pretty fun 3D animations going on. All of which just was processed on the always-powered console so it all didn't matter.
That Nintendo went back to this simple UI on the Switch had nothing to do with them hating the Switch so much, but just wanting to get the last bit out of the processor which already was aged when it was released back in 2017.
All of this might have been different on the 3DS as I believe that one offered more configuration options but that also wasn't as limited in terms of the ration between processing power and battery as it went up to i believe 8 hours or so?
@MichaelP I was thinking the same, I even work as a UX designer & developer.
But looking at the official design and my desire to keep things simple, (The KISS-principle) it would end up looking near the same as what it currently does.
@KryptoniteKrunch I do understand you, but having an UI like this wouldn't mean that you would be forced to use folders. If you wouldn't, the UI would work sorta similar to how it works right now and also offer more options for the people who would like that.
Having lost any oversight over this HUGE MESS on my Switch with demos, free to play stuff I barely touch, games I finished, games I haven't finished, favorite games, offline-multiplayer games, online multiplayergames... I absolutely wouldn't argue that folders should be mandatory right now. Often I would just discover a game I completely forgot in my library. Which sounds like a good thing but of course thats pathetic.
@valcoholic Nintendo designed the UI to be fast, always available, simple and small. The overall UI is not more than 700KB. Adding a simple background and music to that would double / triple the memory usage.
Everything about the Switch OS is instant. You open a game, it instantly loads, if you open a system menu it instantly loads. Only bad actor here is the eShop, because that relies on downloading webpages which makes it slower.
Compare it to the Wii U, going from the home menu into the settings takes 10 seconds. Going to the Download manager also takes multiple seconds. Booting the Wii U also takes a lot longer than, even a cold boot of the Switch.
And same on the 3DS opening submenu's and settings takes a long time.
Same thing actually on the PS4, XBOX ONE and XBOX Series consoles. Most menu's take long to load, there is a lot of clutter on the screen and it feels very sluggish. The most recent XBOX firmware is a lot better, but it's still cluttered beyond believe.
The Switch has, by far, the best OS on a console.
@sanderev Hey thanks that was a way more in depth answer than I expected. I do agree that its made for speed, but not even having a serach function nor folders still do point into the save-memory-and-battery direction for me. Which still completely work with your part of the story as this all sums up to make even more sense.
I gotta say that I never felt like the menus on the PS4 are noticeably slow though, but this console also uses more power in standby than the Switch powered on, so I really couldn't compare these.
So thanks for your insights, especially the filesize of the UI is a cool detail!
Every time I see an article like this I always wonder how much time people are spending looking at their home screens. The current design has very fast performance and is visually very simple to navigate. It would be a really bad decision if Nintendo bloated things out to "look better" at the cost of this (see almost the entire web and most modern software as an example).
Love the Switch, but still no folders is so extremely annoying for large library of titles! This is so extremely overdue!!!! Even Wii U had folders!!!! We don’t need a huge redesign. The Home Screen can remain. But when we go to our library, folders should be available at least there!
@sanderev That's basically because the PS4 (and XBOX for that matter) uses a hypervisor. Which allows it to "park" the entire OS in reserved memory making it faster. It does have a draw, loading the OS (boot) takes longer and it uses more of the cpu. But my main problem here is the clutter. Especially on the XBOX.
The Switch does not have a hypervisor. Which means the OS is located in main memory. Increasing the size of the OS would limit the amount a game could use. Or they would have to unload the OS when going into game. This is what the Wii and Wii U did. Making them very slow.
Basically it would require a soft "reboot" of the OS to go back.
The 3DS is different with a smaller UI that is divided into multiple "apps". Allowing you to easily go back to the home menu, but switching to a different menu takes more time.
I don't like those designs... Too similar to IOS. I actually like the simple design of the switch menu and without the folders i sometimes open the full list of game tiles and run thought them, it's always exciting because sometimes i find a game I bought, started, forgot about and it seems like a totally new game to me!
....
Jokes aside, some options to an organized library would totally be welcome...
Gonna echo what many say here and say it's too cluttered. Less is really more IMO - all I want to do in these UIs is get to my games, and occasionally browse the eShop or change some settings. Personally Switch is my favourite UI (and Xbox my least favourite) this gen for that very reason.
Cluttered and ugly; in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with how the Switch UI currently is - it's simple & it works. Of course, we all want folders ^_^
I don’t get why this is such a big thing , why are ppl looking at the menu screen for so long , turn it on play a game , honestly don’t understand it
@Buckyooliver in his case you don't have enough games on your system to understand the issue. Which is not a bad thing. But since 2017 and with micro d cards holding half a terabyte of data, many players have collected easily over a hundred items so 'just playing a game' can become either a tedious task as you might have to actively search for it or you end up playing just the games on the mainscreen as going through the big collection might be already too much of a hassle.
I like the overall aesthetics, the joy-con coloured backgrounds is a nice touch (though my pink and green Splatoon ones might not look so great with it), but as a usable piece of UI I'm not sold. It's cluttered and there is no clear path to the different elements.
For example, how do I get to my folders? Do I navigate down into the details of the selected game, then right through those menus until I get to my folder selection? Then I guess I select each one with A to see what's in it (though I can probably guess from the thumbnails), then do I have to navigate back across into the panel on the left to select the game I want? This is adding up to a lot of button presses, it's not very smooth or intuitive at all.
There's also practical issues with the new aspect ratio of the selected game, to make it go from square to rectangle like that you'll need every game on the system to create and provide a new image for that. Also some of that white text on the paler backgrounds is very hard to read and would definitely be significant issues for accessibility.
So yeah it looks pretty and sleek, but it's not a great bit of UI.
@valcoholic I have over 200 games but they are physical so I just put in what I want to play at that time , guess it makes sense for digital
Way too busy. I will stick with the snappy and simple current UI.
@Would_you_kindly I think the Wii U's sounds are underrated!
I agree with what seems to be the popular opinion here: looks nice and sleek but perhaps a bit cluttered.
However, the main hangup for me is that it just looks so un-nintendo. At this point in the switch's life cycle, I honestly don't care if we can a UI update or not. But if we did, I would want it to be uniquely "nintendo"
4 years and we haven't had a single update to the UI, that's pretty horrible. They even have themes in the settings..and its just black or white.
I love Nintendo but they have this major problem where after launch they just forget the hardware exists other than some basic patchs.
Meanwhile Xbox and PlayStation continually evolve. New options, new features everything.
Nintendo cant even be bothered to give people wallpapers.
Wow! This looks amazing!
@Ocaz I have over 400 games on my Switch and it's such a mess. We need folders yesterday!
I know it’s never gonna happen, but it looks sooo nice. I need this now
I learned to get around the HOME Menu with 600 games; Simple Solid color themes is all I’m asking for.
Maybe folders.
That Zelda one looks amazing. Some of the others are a bit cluttered and look hard to navigate, but I hope Nintendo is taking notes, because the Switch UI is bland and lifeless, and something akin to this look adds a lot of color and visual diversity.
A slick interface is nice if you spend a lot of time looking at it, but I only ever look at the home screen for the few seconds it takes me to start a new game, and for that purpose, the current Switch interface is perfect.
@earthinheritor,
Not sure why Nintendo are obliged to change the UI, if they feel it's optimized for the quickest load times etc, and bear in mind it's also the most assessible interface on the consoles, as it has to cater to a much wider audience, my Xbox One home screen seems overly complicated to me.
Themes and folders would be nice, as would a better loading e-Shop, although the latter is more down to the server than anything else.
We need to get away from the Nintendo does not care attitude, because they will not cater for all the core gamers whims, pretty sure if they polled a large amount of the Switch user base they would have very few issues with the current home screen UI.
@Mountain_Man,
So true, can't see why some are complaining so much about it, of course the majority will have no issues with it.
Love the way the article says on of the top requests is folders, who exactly apart from the core minorities on gaming sites and YouTube actually want any of this.
@johnvboy I could not agree more. I feel that with blogs like this, it kind of forms an echo-chamber, with hardcore gamers thinking that their opinions are the majority, and that Nintendo should cater to them, when in reality, they are a small minority. However, I do still want Nintendo to add folders and themes. Folders are really useful if you have a lot of games, and themes are just a fun thing to have to customize your Switch.
Yuck! It looks awful.
Keep the simple UI instead.
All Nintendo need to so is add folders, good themes and maybe (if it doesn't require more RAM) up the UI to 1080p instead of 720p.
@ObeseChihuahua2,
No doubt they could improve things a little, a 1080p resolution rather than 720p would be nice, and some additional themes and folders also would be nice, not essential but still nice.
Not sure the radical overall is needed, as I like the simplicity and speed of the current home screen, a few changes here and there, as long as it does not impact the speed and usability.
Another issue I have is some stating Nintendo have not touched the UI since launch, which is not true, they have made improvements to the way you display the games, and given different sorting types etc, and added the zoom feature, which is great when playing in handheld mode.
@valcoholic,
Exactly, it's optimised to work within the power constraints of the Switch's hybrid design, and is optimized for the best performance.
@johnvboy yeah looking at how people are just asking for at least folders over and over and over and how Nintendo isn't giving them to them, Its sorta clear to me that this too might have to do with saving memory at least a bit but also that Nintendo might have made this a priority for the next Switch-generation as resources might not be extremely tight as they are this time around.
@valcoholic,
Without a doubt it's down to system memory and optimization etc, as Nintendo had little issue offering themes and folders on the 3DS.
Pretty sure Nintendo will stay with the Switch branding for their next console, and no doubt will add more features to the UI, made possible with the extra performance etc.
@johnvboy I'm curious about Netflix.
I was never sure if Netflix (or whatever similar service like Prime) isn't on the Switch because it would just add to the battery drain too much without serving any gaming-related purpose (which I guess isn't the case for Youtube) or because Nintendo was just very cautious how customers should perceive the product like they were with the WiiU, trying to avoid any comparisons with an iPad. I mean, maybe both. But future generations of that concept might answer that as more resources and better battery life should theoretically open the doors to more multimedia-apps and possibilities.
this UI look too clustered, we know Switch OS need themes/folders for your games, but not in this way.
@valcoholic,
The Netflix situation does surprise me, ok the app is based on more time intensive videos etc, but still surprised it's not on the Switch.
No, this is a cluster. We don't need this. Just give us folders and let us manage icon size and location, like we could on 3DS and Wii U.
@Heavyarms55 Agreed. I actually like the Switch UI; it's simple and serves its basic purpose well. I'd also raise that they give us the option to disable communication features in the currently opened game, so others can download on the background. It's annoying when I'm waiting for a download, but it won't make any progress because the current game happens to have leaderboard support or something.
@johnvboy They dont care though. Fas have been asking for changes since the day the system launched and they haven't even attempted to make changes or updates.
Xbox is wayyy too cluttered for sure. But the majority of people have been pestering Nintendo for t least some basic QOL features and they haven't listened to anyone.
The eShop is also an utter disaster even 4 years on. It loads horrifical slow, the garbage floats to the top when good content is hidden.
It's pretty clear they dont listen or really care.
OMG, kill it with fire.
Wait, no, light the fire on fire, then use it to kill this.
The OS is missing the important feature of folders/organization, but other than that it's more than fine.
At least it's not as hideous and backward as the PS5 UI, which ALSO lacks the basic folder feature....
Not bad remember the 3DS XL allow one to move their icons around until the Switch came along. They did allow limited user changes.
@NEStalgia Beyond folders they need to have a migration system so one can move data to another Switch when they upgrade or change system they make it so hard jus to migrate Switches.
@SwitchVogel This remains one of the strangest things Nintendo has done in recent years. They've almost never touched the Switch Home menu. Very minimal things in over 3 years since launch and several major system updates.
They even set up things that suggested planned updates that have never arrived. Like "themes". Knowing what the 3DS had and even sold premium versions of - it seemed to suggest we'd get themes other than light and dark. They also used to add more player icons with each big update until... they just stopped for no reason.
They seem to have an almost irrational level of devotion to the Switch home menu as it is.
I agree that it is a good Home menu. But there are so many small things they could add or change that would make it so much more functional, and retain the basic design.
@SwitchForce Which is hilarious with the oled model launching in 4 weeks.... Goodbye Splatoon data! You can call and beg for animal crossing data. Not sure I'll bother...
Those are excellently made concepts (Kingdom Hearts 3 is there, good to see someone with adamance) but I'd rather take something similar to the PS5's interface, with more space and all that.
But thinking about it.....
Did you knew Switch's OS uses less than 70MB of system memory? Nintendo did an excellent job at making it simple and fast.
If they added more density to the UI, that means there would be less memory avaliable for developers and would potentially impact the loading speed. That's just a hypothesis though, they added themes and folders for the 3DS with little impact for development right? They could at least add these for the Switch too, I know they can.
When a properly next-generation Switch arrives, that's where a complete redesign will happen.
Also, interesting icons and... what's Iwata doing there? It's a neat detail
ngl... its pretty. but the interface is missing two things.Wario Land Deluxe and Yoshi's Island 2 Deluxe. Help....
@earthinheritor,
You are still not convincing me this is anymore than core fans wants and needs, and as I said you are probably looking at optimization and speed issues with the UI, which I assume is the reason it runs at 720p, because the system has to work around handheld play.
The e-shop will be down to server issues, although all digital stores with tonnes of content will be tough to organize, and as titles get older they will drop out of sight etc, meaning you have to search for what you are looking for, it could be speedier on it's icon loading, but not the end of the world by any means, Nintendo have introduced updates with a genre search system etc.
Not sure if it's Nintendo do not care or simply limitations of a hybrid system, which people are quick to point out on here when a triple AAA game has a lower resolution and frame rate, then totally ignore these issues when a part of the system does not offer them features they would like.
@SwitchForce,
Not sure what you mean, you can do a full system transfer when you buy a new console, and Animal crossing has it's own dedicated tool for the same purpose.
@johnvboy full transfer is when you have a NIN account for each account to do transfer by wifi verification or did one forget this. There is no other way to do transfer you have to buy the other to do this you can't just transfer on-the-fly. There is currently no Nintendo transfer software to move everything over from one system to another without using wifi email verification to do so. And if you can't trade the other until you finish it.
@SwitchForce,
Who would do this without a Nintendo account or WiFi Iinternet connection/ e-mail.
I love for this change cuase then we can design are switch to make it more us and user can be more creative
@Ocaz Is there any way to scroll through your games other than the left and right home screen? That seems like a huge chore with a lot of games
Nintendo tends to go super simple, but even super simple could support folders. One area where the Wii U still shines
I like it, kinda? But now it has to much of a ps4 feel to it.
@SeantheDon29 finally a library to dwarf my 780+. "Our battle will be legendary!"© 😆
And I keep all the icons on the "All Software" screen, too.
Said it before and I'll say it again. If you're spending more than 10 seconds looking at the UI, you've completely lost the point about gaming.
While these do look nice, I think they would slow down the system. Switch OS is super light in terms of RAM usage, and I appreciate the fact that it's straightforward and without too many features to slow down the one thing the system is meant to do, that is, gaming.
Still looks like absolute trash, luckily this guy doesn't work for Nintendo.
It looks much better after the revision. Less clutter, more like the actual Switch but with folders
Not remotely interested in anything like or inspired by anything from Apple, thanks.
Maybe add a favorites folder/page
@nhSnork especially when you’re trying to sort your downloaded from your archived software. 😩
@Thoughts You’re right, looks awful on 4k, and even not so great on my 1080p TV, which I chose btw, over a 4k TV because of my new at the time Switch. Games do look better on 1080p TVs. (Side point I know. Can’t wait for Nintendo to go 4k, but probably won’t see that until 2030~ lol)
So no one is going to mention about the top image having the Mario with no mustache/eyebrows in the friend icons?
@SeantheDon29 yeah, that sorting option could be neat.😆 Especially when I bring the console over to my friend's place and start looking for other single screen multiplayer titles (after we tackle and give up on Overcooked again): "Hey, this one should apply and it's fun... oh wait, it's not on the card at the moment. And... never mind, neither is this one"
That said, the only QoL feature I would actually like to have in the OS is the offline access to game data like file sizes, without having to open respective eShop pages for them. And while we're at it, having player count from the same pages would also come in handy.
looks nice they should do like wii u ui instead
@Ocaz
Holy Moly mate…..
I’ve got around 20 - 25 Switch games and I thought I had a lot!
You must own every game ever made for Switch! lol
Wow, this really got an update? There's tons of people who've done mock-ups like this. What makes this one so special?
My guess is that they can stick "Apple" in the tags and piggyback off of some of the hype from the "new"(read: repackaged) iPhone that just launched.
@Hurblyburbly someone has me beat in the library size. But yeah i love my switch its my primary games device! Beats out my pc just cuz its so convenient.
@Ocaz Can't argue with you there.
@Hurblyburbly I have over 100 switch games. Judging from comments on some of these articles a fair amount of people on this site are up there. Some of it is DLC, but the switch eshop currently has 10,617 things, so thousands of games.
I would be interested to see statistics on how many people have how many games... I'm sure almost all Switch owners have fewer than 10 games which is why the UI is basically made for those people.
@Ocaz
That’s fair enough.
I own all 3 consoles so probably own 50 - 60 games in total I guess.
Great you love switch so much.
Nintendo were my first gaming love back in 1992 and I always buy there console too.
@FishyS
Blimey I didn’t know you could purchase so much for the Switch!
I own all 3 consoles so my games are spread over over them totalling 50 - 60 at a guess.
@Thesharkfromjaws Same. This UI looks a lot more flashy but it isn't what I'm looking for on the Switch.
I like the layout and if they let users customize the look like they could on 3DS-I can this can work. Just have the template and let the users customize the way it look-if they are afraid of homebrew this will at least give users a customized user view.
Some aspects of this UI is nice, but it just isn't Nintendo.
The hallmark of Nintendo design is charming simplicity. The Switch UI just needs some charm.
It's funny how the Switch's UI has always been the topic of discussion over the past few years. Between 2016-2018, people have always praised the Switch's UI for being simplistic in comparison to the PS4, XB1, and even the Wii U and 3DS. Now, it's about how the UI is too simple compared to well... the Wii U and 3DS.
Then there's this. I don't think a UI designed to look like a smartphone would work well. There's an extent to how many features should be brought in, because simplicity is still important to make a console easy to use.
They have themes on the 3DS and I notice the theme ONLY right after I change it. Honestly, the Switch UI is fine.
Now the eShop, that has become slow or maybe I am just used to the snappiness of the Xbox Store on the Series S.
@Crono1973 The eShop is indeed slow, that is because it's completely reliant on internet. It basically runs in the webbrowser, which isn't exactly fast.
Only "fan" screenshots from a man who has nothing to do with Nintendo and is not a programmer... Everyone makes a lot of such suggestions.
Nintendo should add a good search function to the library and perhaps some grouping. This would help a lot finding games in big libraries.
I like the current UI as it is. No need for themes or folders.
Looks pretty nice to me.
Any of the above is better than the current UI, I dont understand what the problem is for Nintendo, I've seen some pretty nice homebrew UIs online too. But unfortunately I never crack my Original hardware so just stuck with the over cumbersome UI Nintendo have created but never improved on
Thanks, I hate it.
In all fairness, the UX of updated UI looks like it would be a lot better. Well done to the guy for taking the feedback and iterating the design
Yeah no, I don't like this. The IU we got is nothing special and I'd love something improved but not a damn iOS clone, I'm staring enough on my phone as it is I don't need to it again on my Switch.
I would love for the Switch menu too look that way, but with the current Switch hardware, I think that navigation speed would suffer. Maybe in the next version of the Switch? For now, I'd settle for folders.
Having been a little over-obsessed by folders etc. in the previous gens (and on Xbox S X) I now really appreciate the minimalism of both the Switch and PS5 interface more.
Too much going on here.
Same here, loved the simplicity of the Switch home menu ever since it was revealed, trouble is the core minorities always feel the menu should cater for their own personal niche tastes, when the wider Switch audience will much prefer the more simple layout, or will not even give a damn either way.
@Dethmunk,
It will be in part down to optimization, but in reality how much time do we spend on the home screen, I would much prefer a more zippy experience on a more simple layout, than having compromises for a slightly prettier screen, with a few more functions.
I like the current Switch UI more... I just want folders.
I love folders. On my Wii U, I have Digital Wii U Games, NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy Advance, DS, Demos, & Apps. On my PS4, I have PS4 Physical Games, PS4 Digital Games, Arcade Games, PS one games, PS2 games, and Neo Geo Games. Sadly, neither the Switch or PS5 has folders.
@Ocaz It's easy to get 1000 good games on Switch if you have a broad taste. There are 6379 games currently listed on the Switch eShop, and if you count only the good ones I bet there are more than 1000.
I too, want folders, but just the simplest ones possible. Just a click away to get to a screen where you can add and arrange folders. I would like to have folders for Cartridge, Download, F2P+Apps, Demos, and Archived, so yeah, 5-6 folders at least to clean it up a bit and have easier access. The old game selection menu should still be default though.
I thought it was impossible to make the switch UI less intuitive. I'm sorry for being dreadfully wrong.
Just give us folders.
While I do agree the Nintendo Switch Menu needs some more Nintendo Magic, not sure if should be in THAT particular way! But what I do like is that going into someone's profile info showcases their Mii! That'd be a dope addition =D
