For the 500th time this year, we're here to express our excruciating jealousy over the amazing things Nintendo fans in Japan get treated to. This time, it's a stunning Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword soundtrack collection.
From Nippon Columbia, the new soundtrack will be available to Japanese fans in either a Regular or First Press Limited edition. Both come with five discs of music from the game, with 187 songs featured in total, but the Limited edition also includes a "luxury" outer box and a truly beautiful music box which plays 'Ballad of the Goddess'.
Seriously, look at (and listen to) it:
The two editions are set to launch in November and can be pre-ordered here (Regular) and here (Limited) for ¥5,500 and ¥8,800 (approx. $50 / $80) respectively. Just bear in mind that you'll need a Japanese shipping address to order them.
You know, if Nintendo wants to team up with any western music labels for an international release, we wouldn't mind. Just saying.

That looks really awesome, actually.
I need that music box :/
I’m jelly. Really jelly
Honestly if they were both release in Europe also I may just go for the regular edition as the extra cost for the Music box and the outer box is a bit high for me.
You have heard of a little thing called... a proxy service?
i absolutely love how the discs look, proper eye candy
Want this! Why not in europe lol
Don't usually go in for VG memorabilia, or any clutter, but damn I want this!
Hmm waiting to see if my import sites get this.
Edit: caved and preordered with amazon Japan.
The Wii Version also had an ALbum packed in with a range of Zelda themes in orchestrated versions done by Nintendo themselves.
Its the only Soundtrack-album I would really go back to this day as its just really, really well done.
@ValZ That'll only double the cost.
But can the music box run backwards so I can listen to Zelda's Lullaby as well?
@ValZ @Ryu_Niiyama no need for importers or proxy services. I just ordered the Breath of the Wild soundtrack from amazon.co.jp a few months ago and they were shipping worldwide. Not sure if they will offer the Limited Edition.
@arenred The game rip was awesome. I think it was 20 hours long!
I think I still have the CD from the Wii purchase somewhere. It is great. This is interesting
@countzero I usually prefer my import sites because I get a better shipping deal but I had enough points to make this worthwhile. Will make a good winter solstice gift to myself. TY.
Ah, another fine addition to my ever growing big box Zelda OST collection.
@Ryu_Niiyama Do you have a link to the Amazon Japan website to order this? I can't find it. The Nippon Columbia website won't allow me to ship outside of Japan.

Nice. Thanks. Looks like Amazon is including a "free" tote bag of some sort if you choose the right one. Anyone have any idea what that looks like?
What a raw deal for anyone that doesn't live in JPN. Now buy from Amazon JP and pay shipping.
@ValZ
Which are ridiculously expensive and not worth the money for just one item!
I swear I am not feeling this music box movement for video games. Could turn into a new collection addiction for me. I already have the one that came with the FE3H OST.
It's really not hard to get this stuff anymore. Importing has never been easier with Amazon JP, and they usually get first editions too.
@Ryu_Niiyama How much was shipping to get it from Japan to the US? Also, do you have to have a separate account for Amazon Japan? It doesn't seem to like me using my credentials for Amazon.com
I will say the music box is a bit boring looking (I wish it was wooden or something), but I love hearing it.
@FiveDigitLP You do need to establish a separate Amazon Japan account, but you can use your same email as your Amazon account in your country. Shipping was about $26 for the limited edition.
Well, as an ex-collector, I've had a tough time STOPPING my nearly perfect Zelda collection (of everything Zelda that is beautiful). Since the abundance of 3DSXL designs, expensive F4F statues and Switch controllers, and more beautiful guides, reprints of the comics,... I've accepted it's come to an end instead of getting them after a certain point, and I can now say with confidence: I'm at peace just appreciating it and never getting it. A collector's Edition of the next game however... (just seeing that steelbook of Link's Awakening made me preorder the Limited Edition back then)
Nintendo need to release their soundtracks more. Even if it’s just limited time physical runs of soundtracks, that’s something. Nintendo have some of the best vgm and I would love for them to release their music in the west, and especially on streaming services like Spotify. On top of that, they need to stop blocking their soundtracks on YouTube. While I know they are completely in their legal rights to, they need to leave some way for people to listen to their music other than just in the games. This comment turned out longer than I thought lol
@RGH27 Nintendo soundtracks were the primary motivator for me to set up a Plex streaming music server. Whatever the reason is, probably not wanting to be subject to anything but Japanese copyright law, it's highly unlikely they'll ever bend on this. Or if they do it'll only be tightly contained selections from full soundtracks of their biggest and current titles.
I wish music companies would switch over universally to Blueray. CD's are just too fragile and do not age well! An expensive collector's edition doesn't exactly feel very premium when the discs arrive as CD's.
That said, I still would love to get my hands on this regardless. I'm a complete sucker for beautiful OST releases.
Forget "adorable," the sound of that music box is downright **haunting**. Really sublime.
@Ulysses : There were a handful of audio DVDs released in the 2000s (I recall seeing a few in stores circa 2005), but it never took off. As dedicated music players seemed to have lost favour in most households, and without DVD/Blu-ray support in the majority of vehicles (and now computers), DVD audio was dead on arrival, and that was over 15 years ago.
Audio Blu-ray never stood a chance.
CDs still remain the gold standard (for better and for worse) for hardcore music fans, especially as the overwhelming majority of music nowadays (even catalogue material) is mastered digitally (and not all digital storefronts offer lossless quality). I still collect CDs in order to have lossless versions of my favourite tracks/albums. Fire Emblem OSTs are a particular highlight.
@Spider-Kev Well, some of them, maybe.
To Order on Amazon Japan use Chrome so it can translate if need be and you have to create a separate account on there with your address info. Then link your paypal or CC and make purchase from Amazon JPN from that account.
You know, you were going on about it and I was expecting to see something much nicer.
@Silly_G Agreed that the market pushed hardcore music fans into a corner. Still, I wish Bluray was the standard physical media over CD's since it's so much more durable. Plus, depending on the company/platform, a CD reader can be harder to find than a Blueray reader.
@Ulysses BD died of a thousands laser cuts. Just look around you barely see much movies in BD. Even the Public Library I work we barely order BD more like DVD is KING still. People don't have disposable income to just buy BD and expect something in return. BD experiences requires the TV/Hardware to go along but if you have neither having BD does nothing.
@SwitchForce : It’s hardly surprising that a public library with a modest budget wouldn’t have the money to spare for Blu-rays. That would be like complaining about libraries having more paperbacks than the more expensive hardbacks. They’re luxuries that such establishments cannot justify when that money could be spent on additional items.
Donations would likely play a big part too, with people handing over their old DVDs that do not justify the effort to sell them for a pittance, hence their abundance.
After a decade they finally released the soundtrack. Only a handful of Skyward Sword music was released in several Nintendo soundtrack releases (Zelda Anniversary, Nintendo compilation themes, etc.) This has been ongoing with other soundtracks released randomly or after a re-release.
