nooooooh only a 5. I might still get this at some point. This was meant to be not remakeable due to its weird rights-situation and I believe the whole situation of the format/code of the old game was pretty crazy (they might have had to backwards engineer it together or something) However I've been thinking about this and all those memories (lost in time like tears in rain) and all that sense of wonder back in the 90ies here and then and always hoped I could one day get back into this game again. I do believe that the dynamic structure of the story is still special until today, even if today more games are doing it. But playing Disco Elysium, more than once I thought that Blade Runner was basically building the fundament for a game like this.
it really sucks that NIntendo can't just be more transparent with this. Just say "we're gonna hold a Not-E3-Direct" or "Nothing planned right now, stay tuned" There's nothing brand-igniting behind letting customers starve and guess and wait like this.
Kinda too short for someone with work and kids (who aren't gaming all the time lol) I hope I can hop in, but with a game of that scale, its pretty much like a very timed demo-experience that doesn't necessarily feel like an exclusive advantage for NSO-people.
But of course after reading "Blood, Sewat & Pixels" by Jason Schreyer, I guess I have to at least check it out to see what a single person can achieve.
tried this with a friend and jesus this sucked. As if the SNES was out of good games lol. I wish they could make some good deal with Capcom about Castlevania as I never played those back in the 90ies. But I guess they wanna stick to their collections.
@johnvboy by no means this is unfinished. Nintendo just has more information about the exact date of doomsday, so just take your notes, you gonna need em in ~36 years from now.
For me the WiiU has a way longer lifecycle than the Wii had. Especially post mortem, but even overall considering that the Wii was way longer supported. I regularly play Yoshi's Wooly World, Nintendoland or WindWaker HD with my kids and especially have to say that Tropical Freeze is a game that matures gracefully with age as today, its just a masterpiece for me while at launch it was a bit mmmmh (as I still was salty about it not being a Metroid game but another DK). TF has become my go-to experience whenever I feel really down. Its funny when you have the blues, feeling completely joyless with all the Red Dead Redemptions, Disco Elysiums you name em, but Tropical Freeze somehow builds such an amazingly strong contrast to any negativity, you just can't help but feel better again. Special Mention: Affordable Space Adventures is among the most unique picks you can get for the WiiU as its impossible to recreate this experience in a worthy way.
btw the game itself looks very good. I mean if this isn't going ftp, I'd be really shocked. They probably saw the success of Genshin Impact and thought "hey... genshin impact is somehow influenced by BotW which was influenced by Ghibli. Meaning we need to to this" I mean time will tell if they were right. If its ftp I'll have a look.
"Features Crypto And Blockchain, Will Add NFTs" and as a special unlockable: child labor! All profits go directly into military tech and the NRA. And you can pay microtransactions for your own Peter Thiel Ghibli skin (at night it becomes a reptile!!!).
@PBandSmelly the graphic visualization of a creature swallowing other lifeforms alive and the metaphor for Genghis Khan's warriors eating the brains of their foes to gain their strength displayed through Kirby's abilities is definitely not suited for younger folks! Even parental guidance would have been sloppy.
As someone who lived the N64-drill and the whole rise of early 3D, this might look OK. But if I look at it with a more objective eye, then this is insanely dull. It looks a bit like the example for what can happen if you translate something into 3D without really having enough ideas to do so. M64 really did a lot of new things and revolutionized the genre. This sorta stays in 2D in terms of gameplay while having low poly as a selling point on N64. I mean all of that is absolutely logical and I'm not asking WHY. But the N64 could have served as a decent 2D machine at some points, delivering pretty cool experiences. Mischief Makers and Yoshi's Story proof that (at least on a visual level) yet they sometimes had to force polygons into everything even if it barely makes sense.
Of course I understand I'm being a bit too harsh here. It definitely looks like something I'm gonna dig into whenever I'm getting my expansion+. It just gives me these vibes some games give me when now looking back. Asking me what would have happened if 2D wouldn't have been uncool for 2 decades after 3D consoles were announced? Today its totally cool to have a new sidescroller, back then it literally felt like something of an antique era.
Today whe don't just get great 2D experiences, we also have a Kirby game that actually works in 3D
@DeathByLasagna I imagine Tour-tracks need to deliver more excitement in a short period of time. An average MK session on the Switch might be way, way longer than on a phone and with an actual joypad in your hands, it becomes more about steering and driving and less about the fun-racer experience alone. It indeed is quite an interesting showcase of differing gamedesignconcepts on these platforms.
Hehe I imagine some older brother in FULL RAGE while watching the Smash Bros Ultimate credits, shouting "CAN YOU JUST HOLD IT FOR A SECOND I'M TRYING TO READ THIS!!!!!!"
@everynowandben after the Cyberpunk disaster the Deus Ex brand might really deserve another chance. Human Evolution and Mankind Divided were both brilliant. Not as great as the very first one, but still very good games.
@Bizzyb I'm pretty sure its a battery thing. I mean if a popular streaming service like Netflix would be released, people might really start using it, draining the battery and complain about Switch's poor battery life. Plus the Switch would compete more with tablet computers which Nintendo absolutely tried to avoid (hence no browser)
I know, there are other services, but especially Youtube is more for shorter videos, so it might not create the feeling as if the battery is just so poor plus YT has some actual worth for players as you can quickly look up solutions when youre stuck in a game.
Then again, the fact that they greenlit Hulu and not Netflix sorta crashes with my theory, but its still the best I can come up with.
I'd wish for Netflix of course. The fact that I can use my PS4 for Netflix, Amazon Prime and even Apple TV+ is pretty cool, use it all the time. It would be even more amazing with the Switch. When we're going on hoiday, I'll always take my Switch + Dock with me and just having all my streaming services available like that would be a charm, but well ...
Starfox 64 (or how they called it here in Europe, LYLAT WARS lol) was arguably the only really good entry in the whole series. Starfox on the SNES was amazing for the time and definitely not a bad game. But SF54 was the one where they really pulled it off and everything worked quite fine.
Pretty much all other entries were just mediocre attempts to use that quite strong brand to create something that would ride on the SF64 train. SF Adventures felt very odd back on the cube, like a weird SF skin on that Dinosaur Planet game (which it basically was), SF Assault was said to be pretty good....for one mission. SF Zero looked very promising but of some reason they had to just risk too much. By now, SF64 didn't necessarily age so well that its impossible to just create a SF game that just is SF again. Like SF64 didn't add some weird mechanic just to stand out next to SF but just improved on visuals, controls, possibilities, storytelling and so on. Nintendo doesn't usually like to "just" do a sequel. But thats exactly what they should do here. Just a sequel where you fly around, do barell rolls and shoot stuff. No wicked camera-mechanics, no weird action adventure and all the other attempts to force something fresh into the recipe. That dish smelled fine enough 25 yrs ago.
OK what would really be funny: Netflix releases their app in summer and Nintendo drops the Switch 2 in fall, resetting the whole OS and making us wait for all those apps for 5 more years again.
But apart from the S2 not coming soon, I absolutely expect them to build on the Switch OS and let us just transfer all apps and games.
GODDAMMIT NINTENDO!! ! ! ! ! ! ! Spend the resources for this project into making F-Zero GX HD Remake or Remaster. I don't even need a new one. Just GX on the Switch. No one cares about SFZero, this game wasn't a success even for WiiU-standards.
In some ways, the Lego games proved that demakes could work with the masses, so I'd be all in for doing actually real ones. Of course that only works with certain franchises, but most new big IPs that didn't come out of the 1990ies and also are quite fine in terms of gameplay should be a good fit. For instance an Horizon Zero Dawn sidescrolling action-metroidvania. Or splatoon.
@MeloMan of course thats the first thing that comes to mind; I'd say her voice is a bit to low pitched, but then again I'd prefer that to the one in BotW. And she already worked with Nintendo and obviously is a huge Zelda fan.
I'd upgrade in a heartbeat. Not necessarily because I feel the need to. Most of the time I play stuff like Hollow Knight, Disco Elysium, Animal Crossing and so on. Stuff that doesn't really require that amount of performance.
But I'd upgrade because the Switch remains Nintendo's greatest product of all time and I can show my respects through $$$. I will stick with this concept for as long as they plan to continue to offer it. My kids love it and I believe the only thing I'd absolutely demand from a Switch 2 is that it shares everything with the Switch through backwards-compatibility.
Of course there are some games that would already profit a lot from more power, but still, XCom2 is a ton of fun on the switch despite some reviewers downscoring its visuals. More power would especially come into play on a big screen which I rarely use.
And I think the rumors about a Switch successor being released along BotW2 are laughable at best. Nintendo never releases a new system while the current one is still leading the charts. If the Switch would sell under their expectations right now, it would be a realistic schedule to assume they'd release a Switch 2 in fall for holiday season. But did anyone claiming there could be a new Switch check the current sales figures?
the last year of the Wii was an insanely boring stretch for consumers. There really were just a few interesting titles to make up for a months of void and it was so clear that they had to release something soon.
The Switch is more than alive and I'm happy it continue to stay alive for years to come.
Not so much to celebrate here. I backed it back then and went along with the whole kickstarter campaign and it was sorta thrilling to share the whole devprocess with a bunch of ex-Rare-legends. But the resulting game was mediocre at best. It is still nice to know that my name is somewhere there hidden among zillions of backernames in the kscredits and maybe this lets me forgive it some of its mistakes. But this game was clearly so overambitious and way too big on paper to actually make it work, its ridiculous at times as barely anything really feels thought through and polished. And the fact that they switched to 2D in the sequel totally emphasizes this. This happens when an independent studio tries to do an AAA platformer. Its kinda sad, but theres a reason why barely anyone does that.
cheesus don't mind the naysayers and go for it. I mean sure he won't get rich, but would that be different 6 yrs ago? Back then it would have had to compete. Now its a dedicated newsheadline and some might just jump on that boat for fun. Plus Silver Falls looks as WiiU as it gets. Maybe he had these unfinished projects lying around and when Nintendo announced to close the whole thing, whe quickly finished everything up. Anyways, its a funny thing.
Its a shame how Nintendo treats their games these days. With other companies, you could expect that they already had put this on the eshop years ago, but Nintendo might just wait another 10 years and then eventually do it.
@Travisemo007 ah yeah right, my wife also got the regular ones as she hates silicone plugs and its sorta true that there isn't that much good competition for the regular ones (which might be reflected in their sales ... a bit)
I always felt like this game would be an actual exlusive also because people would tell me I'd miss a great game if I wouldn't play it on xbox and blah blah. But now it seems like .... they never signed any excolusive deal?
Because in that case, thats just as good as a Switch announcement to me. bc why shouldn't they release it there with the actual Zelda-audience and over 100mio systems installbase.
And even if it was exclusive it would be highly possible that they'd pull off an Ori-deal for this as its just clearly meant to be played on the Switch. By me.
I will use groups, I will tap to open, to close, store stuff .... but .... it will take another year until my brain fully realizes that they are actually THERE.
@Travisemo007 its funny. when the original airpods launched, I laughed at how stupid they looked. After seeing them in the wild literally at every corner, everything else looks weird now. Still like the newer, short designs more but I agree, I generally like the design approach of not having two bricks coming out of your ears, even if it means that there's a thing leading away. But I guess if we'd all wear bricks like those here, I also wouldn't care.
@blindsquarel I didn't understand this either until I at some point bought cheaper ones from Marshall and it happens to be a different thing. After they turned out to be crap (stopped working quite quickly) I got Airpods Pro for a pretty hefty price but the thing with them is that I can have them in my ear all of the time (or as long as the battery lasts) and just connect to whatever device I'm using. I can put that device wherever you want in my flat and run around, accept calls, listen to podcasts and so on. I totally get what you mean, but its actually surprising how a wire really is a leash thats very constraining and limiting you to using a very specific device in a very specific range.
BUT life was definitely cheaper when I didn't feel like that, so maybe you just wanna forget what you just read
there are a lot of use cases for this; just being able to use the phone while working and listening to music on the computer or having music in the background of tedious zoom calls. And yeah, for gaming, I love that the PS4 would run Spotify so I played through all Subnautica with my own Subnautica playlist of ambient stuff which was absolutely great. And more than once I used my Airpods Pro underneath my overear-headphones to do exactly this, so I'd even be the audience.
The focus on low latency is also very nice.
BUT: they definitely don't look "pretty slick". And the regular retailprice of 280 bucks also don't make them cheap ones. Which is OK for a quality thing, but not for something from some kickstarter I never heard (yes! literally heard! I know!!) of. But I'll be looking forward to see some youtubers test it.
This was actually a very interesting prestige project vor iOS as they wanted to prove that you can create a valuable AAA-ish stealth game for that platform. It would be released in episodes and... well... on the iPhones at that time it was actually really very impressive. Back then, along with games like Infinity Blade it really felt like that platform could one day be a quite fine environment for more deeper and immersive game experiences.
Today I'm sorta glad it didn't turn out that way.I prefer my Switch for portable gaming and my PS4 as a home console. Its sorta funny as an iPhone in theory still could pull off so crazy things, but I just couldn't care less about playing anything there anymore.
And that although for years I was really collecting premium game experiences on iOS. like XCom was actually a real blast. But even on the iPad theres just nothing grabbing my attention anymore.
in a world without Ori this would look interesting. But I live in a world with Ori and thus I don't really see why I should get that. Even if I played through both Oris and am desperately craving for more ... I don't think this would be "more".
@Fizza I believe this one is better but all in all I don't see why it has to be a kid at all. Eggman is an old fart, so eggmaam should totally be something with similar age and proportions.
its so funny how nintendo rolls out these features in the original pace of their 1889 founding team. I do understand this isn't a priority as its more QOL stuff that might not translate into profits and sales. Still just ridiculous how there only seems to be one retired old programing guy who might just develop random features next to his chess-game with his niece.
@echoplex aaaaw thank you for this, this made my day; so cool that I actually had the same idea as I just thought I'd drop some random rage into the commentsection . But also weird that they seem to emulate the look of a Nintendo-packagedesign on PS4 but not on the Nintendo console. Maybe Nintendo was like "No you cannot do that. Our customers are complete idiots. They'd believe its an actual N64 game."
WASTED OPPORTUNITY !!!!!! to have a boxart that would look like a N64 package. Would have had so much more impact and it would have been so clear what this game is and what it isnt.
I‘m wondering how surprised or shocked some people are. I recommend reading Jason Schreyer‘s books „Blood, Sweat and Pixels“ and „Press Reset“ as it shines light into these absolutely horrifying development procedures. By now we all know this project is a troubled one but no one knows whats troubling. Can be everything. I for my part have absolutely enough stuff to play for a long while to let them folks at Retro Studios do their best.
my usb-stick for the WiiU just died and now I can still download my games onto the new stick. I'm a bit afraid of whats gonna happen when that stick dies.
By the way, we should not forget that for Nintendo internally, the Switch’s sales have to compete with their previous sales figures of homeconsoles and handhelds combined. Like DS+Wii, 3DS+WiiU as all of their revenue now comes from one single system. I guess even from that standpoint it might work quite fine compared to their last combo-gen, but definitely not as great compared to Wii+DS. Of course that also did cost more production and marketing and so on, but all in all they might have gained way more profits back then, especially considering how much more money they saved on the Wii. The Switch might have underpowered hardware compared to a home console, but the relation but thats because its a portable. Wii was just underpowered, period. definitely cheaper back then.
its still a shame they couldn't get Prime 4 out yet, as it might just be the perfect time right now. If it arrives too late in the Switch's lifecycle, people might just have moved on already, like the last yer of the Wii.
Nevertheless amazing achievement for a 2D Metroid. ESPECIALLY considering that there are some Metroidvanias out there that at least at their time really were at least on the same level of greatness as the Metroid series (like Hollow Knight)
@nkarafo I believe they could. After all its an UE5 engine and look at how Mario's Odyssey looks at times like the wood level and now scale that up to a next gen switch. Maybe it might not reach exactly that level or maybe not 4K but all in all it should be doable
@johnvboy Oh yeah, I meant some will always be negative, because its the internet. But comparing to any other console release of any other brand, I really felt a way more positive vibe with the Switch. All sorts of people and websites who would usually be sceptical were pretty positive. And sure, some haters will just always gonna hate but I guess those might have learned their lesson by now.
@johnvboy i mean with every system there are people claiming its dead on arrival but with the Switch announcement I totally felt like many who would usually be on the fence were totally on board, way faster than ever before on any Nintendo system.
The WiiU was said to be dead on arrival, which I wouldn't even say was true as it still stuck around for 4 years. The Wii's announcement left people just completely confused which would then shape up as amazing PR boost. With the Gamecube I believe it would have been nice if people would give it enough attention to predict it being dead on arrival and the N64... I remember that being quite hyped at least around Nintendopeople. At least I was.
But with the Switch, I really felt like I should've bought stocks ahead of its release as it was so clear that this was gonna be huge. Its also my 1st Nintendo console ever to be preordered hehe
i remember as a sorta young guy when The N64 era had ended and the Gamecube was just starting off, people were always ike ONE DAY, FOLKS, ONE DAY NINTENDO WILL DOMINATE EVERYTHING and at that specific time, it felt like completely illusive. With the Wii something suddenly happened, although in hindsight I wasn't feeling it as there was a lot of low res shovelware and casual stuff. Then the WiiU seemed another step back and now ... guys this is just it.
I'm playing smart niche indie-hipster games like Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds or PC-ports like XCom 2 along with Marios Odyssey and the greatest Zelda game ever on a freaking portable. Its still unreal to me. In some religions, believers wait since thousands of years for some paradise, and us Ninetdnosheeps, here we are in the garden of eden. Thank you Nintendo, well deserved! (and btw: Joycons still suck!)
I might be in the minority here but I think NFTs are a quite interesting development. Ages ago I thought about the possibity to actually have unique things in the digital world. I mean I don't necessarily know for what this could actually be good, but if we would just put all the capitalistic consume genozide aside, its still a sorta interesting thing to have and I'm supercurious what people are gonna do with this in the future.
I really don't think its an EVIL thing, I do agree though that the ones to jump onto that train as quickest as possible obviously have nothing but quick bucks in mind. But I can imagine that this tech will sooner or later go beyond that, once all the cashcrabbing idiots diminished each other into irrelevance.

Re: Playtonic Celebrates 5 Years of Yooka-Laylee, Teases Some "Surprises"
Re: Rumour: Could We Be Getting New NES And SNES Games This Week?
PLOK CONFIRMED!
Re: eShop Closure Be Damned, This Dev Is Bringing Seven New Games To 3DS And Wii U
cheesus don't mind the naysayers and go for it.
Re: Feature: Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nintendo's Most Daring Release Of The Last Decade
Its a shame how Nintendo treats their games these days. With other companies, you could expect that they already had put this on the eshop years ago, but Nintendo might just wait another 10 years and then eventually do it.
Re: These Genki: Waveform Earphones Let You Stream And Mix Two Audio Sources
@Travisemo007 ah yeah right, my wife also got the regular ones as she hates silicone plugs and its sorta true that there isn't that much good competition for the regular ones (which might be reflected in their sales ... a bit)
Re: Will The Zelda-Style 'Tunic' Come To Nintendo Switch? Let's Hope So
I always felt like this game would be an actual exlusive also because people would tell me I'd miss a great game if I wouldn't play it on xbox and blah blah.
By me.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 14.0.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
man, just realized you have to browse to the folders; jesus please fire that UX-guy, he's just not worth it.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 14.0.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
I will use groups, I will tap to open, to close, store stuff ....
but .... it will take another year until my brain fully realizes that they are actually THERE.
Re: These Genki: Waveform Earphones Let You Stream And Mix Two Audio Sources
@Travisemo007 its funny. when the original airpods launched, I laughed at how stupid they looked. After seeing them in the wild literally at every corner, everything else looks weird now. Still like the newer, short designs more but I agree, I generally like the design approach of not having two bricks coming out of your ears, even if it means that there's a thing leading away. But I guess if we'd all wear bricks like those here, I also wouldn't care.
Re: These Genki: Waveform Earphones Let You Stream And Mix Two Audio Sources
@blindsquarel
I didn't understand this either until I at some point bought cheaper ones from Marshall and it happens to be a different thing.
Re: These Genki: Waveform Earphones Let You Stream And Mix Two Audio Sources
there are a lot of use cases for this; just being able to use the phone while working and listening to music on the computer or having music in the background of tedious zoom calls.
Re: Mini Review: République: Anniversary Edition - A Sneakily Intriguing Yet Flawed Experience
Re: Exclusive: 'Imp Of The Sun', An Action Platformer With Ori Vibes, Revealed For Switch
in a world without Ori this would look interesting. But I live in a world with Ori and thus I don't really see why I should get that. Even if I played through both Oris and am desperately craving for more ... I don't think this would be "more".
Re: Random: Forget Bowsette, 2022 Is The Year Of 'Eggma'am'
@Fizza I believe this one is better but all in all I don't see why it has to be a kid at all.
Eggman is an old fart, so eggmaam should totally be something with similar age and proportions.
Re: 'Missions And Rewards' Added To Nintendo Switch Online
its so funny how nintendo rolls out these features in the original pace of their 1889 founding team. I do understand this isn't a priority as its more QOL stuff that might not translate into profits and sales. Still just ridiculous how there only seems to be one retired old programing guy who might just develop random features next to his chess-game with his niece.
Re: Shadow Man Remastered Is Receiving A Limited Run Games Physical Release On Switch
Re: Shadow Man Remastered Is Receiving A Limited Run Games Physical Release On Switch
WASTED OPPORTUNITY !!!!!! to have a boxart that would look like a N64 package. Would have had so much more impact and it would have been so clear what this game is and what it isnt.
Re: Metroid Prime 4 Dev Retro Studios Is Advertising Job Openings On ArtStation
I‘m wondering how surprised or shocked some people are. I recommend reading Jason Schreyer‘s books „Blood, Sweat and Pixels“ and „Press Reset“ as it shines light into these absolutely horrifying development procedures. By now we all know this project is a troubled one but no one knows whats troubling. Can be everything. I for my part have absolutely enough stuff to play for a long while to let them folks at Retro Studios do their best.
Re: Nintendo Is Closing The 3DS & Wii U eShops And Has "No Plans To Offer Classic Content In Other Ways"
my usb-stick for the WiiU just died and now I can still download my games onto the new stick. I'm a bit afraid of whats gonna happen when that stick dies.
Re: Switch Outsells Wii And PlayStation, Passes 100 Million Faster Than Any Other Home Console
Re: Metroid Dread Is About To Become The Best-Selling Game In The Series
its still a shame they couldn't get Prime 4 out yet, as it might just be the perfect time right now.
Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Outsold Both The Wii And PlayStation
didn't realize the PS4 sold so many units. Switch had past it years ago and I thought OK thats it. Sems to have gained momentum at some point.
Re: Video: Zelda 64's Lake Hylia Has Been Reimagined In Unreal Engine 5, And It Looks Absolutely Stunning
@nkarafo I believe they could. After all its an UE5 engine and look at how Mario's Odyssey looks at times like the wood level and now scale that up to a next gen switch.
Maybe it might not reach exactly that level or maybe not 4K but all in all it should be doable
Re: Nintendo Switch Was 2021's Best-Selling Console In Europe, The US And Japan
@johnvboy Oh yeah, I meant some will always be negative, because its the internet. But comparing to any other console release of any other brand, I really felt a way more positive vibe with the Switch. All sorts of people and websites who would usually be sceptical were pretty positive. And sure, some haters will just always gonna hate but I guess those might have learned their lesson by now.
Re: Nintendo Switch Was 2021's Best-Selling Console In Europe, The US And Japan
Re: Nintendo Switch Was 2021's Best-Selling Console In Europe, The US And Japan
i remember as a sorta young guy when The N64 era had ended and the Gamecube was just starting off, people were always ike ONE DAY, FOLKS, ONE DAY NINTENDO WILL DOMINATE EVERYTHING and at that specific time, it felt like completely illusive.
Re: Team17 Is Jumping On The NFT Train With 'MetaWorms'
