Re: Review: Omori - An Emotional, EarthBound-Inspired RPG That's Not Afraid To Shock

@CountDrakeulah was eastward as bad as this? I've almost bought it many times, especially when it finally went on sale. I passed cuz i read u can't skip or speed up the dialogue. Now that i experienced that in this game (on game pass), I'm really glad I didn't give in on eastward. People keep saying it's like Zelda with a story, is why it interested me, but seems there's way too little game play & way too much reading text boxes,, sadly. Glad to hear at least someone mention this, to kinda justify my decision in passing when it was on sale.🤣

@Crockin it wasn't for me, but i didn't like it's inspirations that much (for context). I liked the gameplay of earthbound, i just didn't play it until it was released in 3ds & looks atrocious for someone who hates that 8/16 bit generation & lived through it. If they did a remake that looked more current, i could get into it. Undertale, i hated the art direction (8/16 bit was something i couldn't wait to get out of when living through it. Immersion is almost zero for me in this graphic style) & gameplay (that wasn't fun with a pro controller, forced to use the joystick that was way too sensitive or not sensitive enough for me, depending on the little battle puzzles, so i could tell it was intended for mouse and keyboard).

The game play was fairly simple, just choosing a status spell that counters whatever status the opponents were using (sad, anger, etc, like a weapon triangle from fire emblem, but it was 4 options, IIRC). Then, u could damage them more, or make your character's tank, etc. So there wasn't much variety from what i played, just counter the opponents status, damage, or heal. Then u could build up a special meter that gave ur party mates an extra hit, or save it up for a special move. Pretty simple, but not that fun, IMO. To each his own, ofc. I could barely tolerate the look, for the same reasons i mentioned of the others, but tried to push through. The unskippable conversations, that were among the most boring, uninteresting i have ever experienced in a game, made it especially difficult to like for me, too.

So, a sum of all parts made it much worse to me. If it was this battle system on a different game, it may have appealed to me. There were many times where i had no idea what to do, even after reading all the tedious dialogue. There wasn't much that was edgy in what i played except making the main character kill itself, but i probably didn't play it long enough to get to the deeper plot (i truly hope that's the case,, since so many are gushing over it). Maybe someone without all of the hangups that i had could enjoy it more, but i figured I'd share in case it helps anyone decide.

@moodycat i didn't care for either of those games either, & this game was way worse than both of those, IMO. So boring, i played for several hours, & u can't skip dialogue, & the story at least the 1st, several hours is mind numbingly boring. The battles were way too easy, i can see how they may get to be like a puzzle later with the status effects but it's not a traditional turn based rpg, as I'd hoped. Earthbound, then Undertale well behind, & this game far behind that, are the order I'd put them in, personally, but i realize everyone will have a different opinion, so no need to accept mine over others. I just wanted to share, since not many of us exist who don't care for Undertale & earthbound. I didn't have the patience to finish this game, btw. I have it saved on game pass, so i can resume if i feel like it eventually, but i seriously doubt I'll go back, with so many decent to great games to play, still.

Re: Review: Live A Live - A Brilliantly Faithful Remake Of A Unique And Influential JRPG

@Falksi the problem is they don't give it a "site review", it's 2 completely separate reviewers with different opinions. Now, all sites just hire random contractors, it seems, & don't go back & recognize what other employees have said in the past. I know it may be impossible to get that same reviewer to review a rerelease a long while later, but there's gotta be some type of consistency if they want trust, IMO.

Re: Review: Live A Live - A Brilliantly Faithful Remake Of A Unique And Influential JRPG

twztid13

@Falksi i saw famitsu gave it a 29/40 & people were claiming that was good. I thought they gave most games a 38+ just because they were made by Japanese developers, but maybe I'm misremembering. They made it seem immaculate with all of the previews I've read, so an 8 seemed awfully low for what they were peddling, IMO. I never played this before, & have only heard praise, everywhere. I guess revisionist history, maybe? Glad to see some opposing viewpoints finally, though.

Kind of related, but not specifically a response to you, the first thing i do on metacritic for any game is scroll to the lowest scores & pick a few reviews to read. Then, I'll read 1 or 2 good reviews, if it's a game i am genuinely considering getting. Having negative vs positive reviews really helps me make a decision. I know many don't value the number scores, but i do, because in a world of dozens of reviews for most games, it helps me decide which to read (because I'm, not reading all reviews, & the days of having specific journalists i can trust are long gone). I realize eventually, if not already, they will manipulate scores just to get clicks from people like me, but if i don't like the reviewer's style, or disagree with certain things, i will back out & find a different review, so i don't think that's a huge issue unless they start manipulating the review itself (making it overly positive or negative just to get clicks). It's usually easy to tell when they do this, if you read multiple reviews, though.

@BadTango see, i hate "retro" looking games, & this game looks decent to me. I didn't notice much of a difference between it & octopath, but this style is equally ugly to me, so i guess i just like that it's not a remaster with only 2d graphics, & can miss most of the details. Oddly, i was always a graphics whore for 3d games, & my immersion couldn't tolerate bad looking games.

Re: Into The Breach's Free Advanced Edition Update Lands On Switch Today

twztid13

@Ralizah wow, I loved this game, but advance wars' look puts me off the same way this does you. Ironically, i hate "retro" graphics, & i also hate mech games, so I've never played front mission, but the gameplay of this game is great. I love fire emblem games, too, but i wasn't feeling triangle strategy. The story was too boring to me.

Re: Games To Play After You've Finished Zelda: Breath of the Wild

twztid13

@TheWingedAvenger i haven't played dragons dogma because i heard u had to have NPC with u in battle & train them up, etc? Are u saying that's not true, it's completely single player throughout? If so, i may give it another chance.

I got to this article through the Xel review,t gat says this list is zelda-likes, not BOTW likes, so Skyrim, not witcher 3 fit into that category, FWIW. Zelda games have a specific pattern, to exploring dungeons, where u find new items that are needed to progress. BOTW has a different take on that, sure, but it's still Zelda. Those other games aren't at all, they are full on western-rpg, BOTW is an action-rpg.

Re: Nintendo Shows Off Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass DLC

twztid13

@Craigsouthern I'm the same way. I have bought so much DLC that I've never came back to. Therefore, i will stop buying it until the exact time I'd want to play it. I always convinced myself i could already have it downloaded, or tons of other excuses to biy these things, none of which matter these days. The good thing is these games are usually meaty enough, people like us can enjoy the boxed product, ignore the DLC, & still never feel upset that we're missing something (like if it were cut from the game).

Re: Nintendo Shows Off Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass DLC

twztid13

@Zyph the Nintendo games are usually huge & long enough that even if they did develop it alongside the main game, we get our money's worth, regardless. It especially bothers me when you get much less content, & could tell content was cut to sell later, but this hasn't been the case with Nintendo published games that I've played so far, thankfully.

Re: A Brand New 3DS Game Is Launching This Week (US)

twztid13

@nukatha wow, that's very surprising, but makes me happy. I'm glad some devs haven't abandoned stereoscopic 3d entirely, even though Nintendo did. I actually preferred that to VR, though I'm sure I'm in the minority there. Those games can be played normally, but come alive. VR needs special accessories, design, etc, to be worthwhile. I hate that even Sony abandoned 3d so quickly. All these companies abandoned it, but they're all jumping on NFT's of images so quickly, it will be a shame if that fad lasts longer than the stereoscopic 3d fad, IMO. Thanks for the info, though, sorry for the side rant. I think i will get this myself to show the dev my appreciation, but i need to buy a battery for my new 3ds, mine has been shot for a while. They just restocked them on the My Nintendo store (US) a couple days ago, so i think it's time to snag one (i didn't want to buy from other retailers, I've heard too many bad experiences).

Re: A Brand New 3DS Game Is Launching This Week (US)

twztid13

@Ryu_Niiyama if they wanted to be last, why wouldn't the devs just artificially delay the game until the final day or month the eShop is open? It just doesn't make sense to me that a developer thinks that would help them, so it confused me, sorry.
