I don't mind that some of these JRPGs are just not for me. Just glad they exist for games preservation and for those who have a deep love and are willing to jump through some of the additional hoops and criticisms that were referenced in the review.
If we're going to bring back some classics, PLEASE PLEASE NINTENDO, JUST RELEASE MOTHER 3.
@dont_simp_for_them It has some similarities to Hades but it's a bit slower and more deliberate in how you attack & move, and parrying is a MUST if you want to advance in this game. As was referenced up above, if you like roguelikes, you'll probably dig the game. If not, I'd say avoid this, it's a roguelike for roguelike enthusiasts.
For anyone disappointed in this game, I urge you to consider picking up Kaze and the Wild Masks, it just dropped on Friday and while it's a 2D platformer, it will definitely cleanse the palette from this bad experience. It is like old-school Sonic 1, 2, & 3. It's just smooth and fun and fast. Highly worth it.
This looks really fun, it also looks like a game that would work better with the Pro controller, going to pick this up and give it a go later today, once my work finishes. I love the music!!!
People have been hating on this game a lot. So many reviews keep on saying that they missed the mark. I have to disagree.
The procedurally generated chunks make for engaging puzzle platforming. It's like little slices of difficulty and once you accomplish one chunk, you can move on to the other and it makes you feel really good when you just power your way through it all.
I just beat the first boss and I'm onto the second area/zone. Loving it. Watch some gameplay and you'll see that it's still challenging and engaging.
Also, for anyone wondering, there was a patch released earlier today. Switchup summed it up quite well, so I'll just copy and paste their update here:
SwitchUp - https://youtu.be/hnYRIHhQboE Edit: - Just to let you all know, the publishers have just contacted us to confirm that there is a day one patch (about 2GBs worth) that will improve performance. Glen
Edit 2: - Just downloaded the patch, some brief thoughts:
Performance is much better in handheld in terms of moving the camera. Framerate must have received a boost.
There are still stutters though at random intervals
Visuals are not as blurry, although the resolution is still clearly low
The boats and ships don't move as if done by stop motion animation anymore!
Still on the fence for this one. The degraded graphics in hand-held mode are whats keeping me from hitting purchase. I play primarily undocked and I'd rather not have all that stuttering and lag. A few different reviews have commented on this. Might wait until there's a patch and I hear it's been resolved.
I was enjoying FFX but then I came to a section of the game where I had to play 'blitzball' and that mini-game can go suck an egg. I might pick up FFXII, it has a very MMO kind of feel to it.
@OorWullie Agree 100%. Once you get your second or third power-up/skill, the game opens up quite a bit and you start to get into this groove where it just feels good to move around in the universe.
Also, don't feel bad using an FAQ, there are times where the game doesn't telegraph where you should be going next as clearly as you'd expect.
@HenryCharles I have all the DLC and expansions (except the one that was just released). I've not had major issues with crashes. I think it's only gone down once for me. It runs smoothly and there are a few things you can do to optimize the game so turns aren't so long. It's worth picking up on Switch, but maybe hold off until some patches are released for the most current version. I'm not letting mine update (even without having purchased the latest expansion) until things settle.
Bought one for the wife who games on the couch beside me and is super into Stardew Valley. She won't really care that it's not on the bigscreen and we have mine to play party games when the mood fits. So thsi is a perfect thing for the two of us. I' ordered it on Amazon, expected arrival date tomorrow. Come on Amazon, hurry up!!
@Doktor-Mandrake Same. I picked one up last week once the SNES subscription went live and it works perfectly. Pairs smoothly and feels comfortable in my hands.
My only concern about Pillars of Eternity is how small the text is going to be on the screen when it is undocked and in handheld mode. That being said, I'll probably still buy it and put up with it because Pillars of Eternity is a wonderful game and there's so much content.
I was really feeling conflicted about buying a game this week, I wanted to pick up Gris but then I heard that Rain World was out and I cannot resist platformers of this style. So I opted for Rain World. It looks deep, dark, & challenging, can't wait to tear into it.
Broforce, Into the Breach, and I also managed to pick up Xenoblade Chronicles 2 again. It had fallen by the wayside because I always get distracted by other games like Binding of Isaac, but I forgot how much fun it really is. It's worth going back for anyone else who picked it up upon initial release.
This is the first game that might manage to pull me away from the never-ending time suck that is Binding of Isaac. I'm loving how this game is like XCOM, tetris, chess, & Fire Emblem.
I know a common criticism is that these are older games of a 360 era, and yeah there's a slight whiff of cash-grabbiness that pervades, but the flip side is that we're getting these games in a portable on the go format. And for me and I assume a large portion of other gamers, that's worth the double or triple dip.
For anyone groaning at the lack of an Etrian Odyssey for the Switch, I'm with you. But keep in mind, we have Disgaea 5. It's one of the most nuanced and deep JRPGs available. Slightly different but worth checking out if you have a JRPG itch that you need to scratch.
@JoakimZ I started with Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan. They're all stand-alones from what I recall, some very vague references to other characters or a slight nod but for the most part you can just jump in and adventure. Be aware these are old-style rpg games where you are tasked with creating your map, marking out bosses, etc. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it satisfies a certain itch for certain people. IV is a few years older now, you can probably find it pretty cheap and used. Happy hunting!
Salt and Sanctuary and Iconoclasts are eating up most of my weekend. S&S in particular. This was a double dip, I had this on my Vita but I couldn't resist having it on the Switch, so I re-rolled and I'm playing a Knight build.
The only time I play docked is when I'm taking my Switch to a party. When I'm at home, the dock just sits in a corner and I play everything handheld on the couch or curled up in bed. It's how I roll.
@MoonKnight7 It plays wonderfully and it looks gorgeous. One criticism that is leveled is that the writing can be a bit small on the screen. I sort of half agree with it in that, yes it is small, but also, you get used to it and it's not impossible to read. I know that many enjoy playing with the touch screen, but I haven't really felt the need, but it's there if you like that form of interactivity. Definitely worth picking up. I couldn't wait for a physical release. I've triple dipped this game on my PC, Vita, and now Switch.
I always seem to go back to Binding of Isaac: Rebirth despite having Splatoon 2, which I've barely dug into. Also, Darkest Dungeon has been eating so much of my life.
