If current events haven't made you feel tense enough over the past few days, the political "dictator simulator" Tropico 6 is now available to buy on Nintendo Switch.
Yes, the construction, management and political sim – which was actually shown off in last week's Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase – launches on Switch today. It includes all the content from the original game and the free updates it received; brand-new palace design, the glamorous Flamingo Pond accessory; and a tourist outfit for El Presidente.
A new launch trailer has been released to celebrate (see above), but if you'd like to check out some gameplay, almost two hours of footage was shared in the stream below.
We'll have a full review of Tropico 6 for you as soon as we can, so if you're still on the fence, make sure to stick around at check out our verdict when it arrives.
Are you a fan of the Tropico series? Will you be giving this one a whirl on Switch? Let us know in the comments.

Still on the fence for this one. The degraded graphics in hand-held mode are whats keeping me from hitting purchase. I play primarily undocked and I'd rather not have all that stuttering and lag. A few different reviews have commented on this. Might wait until there's a patch and I hear it's been resolved.
I’ll only buy it if I can play as an obese turtle on his back flailing in the hot sun realising his time is over.
Slay em NL, nice one boys
Awaiting review....
For one moment after realising what the headline meant, I almost had a heart attack... Checked the results and now I feel a bit relieved... For the moment al least
@nessisonett probably upcoming DLC.
@nessisonett sorry, this game isn't set in Belarus yet.
I was really looking forward to this, but watching handheld footage on YouTube put me off. Virtually unplayable in handheld. 😢
Oh look, Nintendolife are trying to incite another political flamewar in the comments section again.
"Nudge nudge, wink wink! That politics, eh?"
@edhe If anyone comes into this comment section genuinely supporting Trump at this point, it’s wouldn’t even be a flame war, it wouldn’t even be funny. It would just be a bit sad really.
@nessisonett
Now why would you say that? The powder keg is lit. Flamewar imminent.
15-20 fps in handheld according to SwitchUp's review.
Yeah, very optimised..
@nessisonett
Literally about half the country still does, and any look at a map will tell you that, as per usual, it's in fact wide swaths of the country painted red, with entire states being decided by tiny pockets of blue on largely-populated cities.
I hate the guy but treating Republicans like some fringe thing to laugh at is why Democrats are losing seats in the house and senate, and barely winning a presidential race they thought they'd crush.
Gonna camp on this one. If it gets patched. Loving the growth in sim strategy on the Switch.
@Zimon Fake news?
The game never looked that great on PC, so...
@RPGamer
Not sure if you're trying to be ironic.
@BLD According to a Republican pollster the reason the polls weren't accurate is because about 13% of Trump voters literally lied to family, friends, and pollsters that they intended to vote for the Commander of Cheetos. A candidate's pretty bad if you have to lie about supporting them. Never happened on that scale before.
@BLD Also unfortunately serious and likely in some places rampant voter suppression of people of colour probably explains some Republican successes in House/Senate. Hopefully that gets put right over the next four years. America and the world need USA to have fully fair and free elections.
@sonicbooming
there is already a review on youtube, swtichup channel, he played for 6 hours, the game has mediocre performance docked and very ***** performance in handheld mode(tanks under 20 fps and resolution and texture are far worst) , to the points he said for switch lite owner to avoid the game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnYRIHhQboE
@Lionyone
The idea that Republicans are suppressing minority votes is outdated, considering several election analysis reveal that Trump's actually gained black and latino votes, men and women both, since 2016.
There's got to be a point where we stop accepting excuses from either side - no more russia, no more cries from both sides that the election is being rigged or suppressed - and start actually trying to understand people. That's the only way you're going to win more votes, not by trying to gaslight them into thinking foreign hackers are convincing them to vote some way.
I played Tropico 4 back in the day and enjoyed it, so I may look into this.
@RPGamer
Cool, now actually read what I wrote and then stop putting words in my mouth.
@BLD Everyone's a dreamer ey.
Tropico franchise is funny and best played on pc.
As for Trump, I don't get the hate, I get that people hate him and for some reasons rightfully so but even son of a Bush wasn't this rediculed and Dems are not doing too hot either from where I am standin' so it's politics as usual, nothing new under the sun and all that.
I’ve been waiting on this game. Can’t pick up until next month but looking forward to it!
Gerrymandering is a real problem, and is more effective clinching seats in Congress vs the presidency. Not seeing the senate change is a serious dampening on voting Trump out.
Please keep the USA in your thoughts- here’s hoping that democracy shines through.
Watching a Banana Republic emerge in USA is enough. Don't fancy playing a game rigging elections on my switch
@aresius Yup, saw that video review.
Also, for anyone wondering, there was a patch released earlier today. Switchup summed it up quite well, so I'll just copy and paste their update here:
SwitchUp - https://youtu.be/hnYRIHhQboE
Edit: - Just to let you all know, the publishers have just contacted us to confirm that there is a day one patch (about 2GBs worth) that will improve performance. Glen
Edit 2: - Just downloaded the patch, some brief thoughts:
<<insert staid orange man bad comment here>>
@PoundShopOrwell I won't comment on Trump directly, for your sake. I'll just say that those who follow a loser are even greater losers.
Hmmm. I already play Civ 6 (too much?), and I've yet to play Frostpunk. I am curious about Tropico, though... and Europa Universalis... haha, what a time this is. A good problem to have, I suppose.
Ahh, yes. Escapism through video games. Perfect way to forget that I live in an oligarchy.
@BLD Remembering, of course, that it’s people, not stretches of land, who are given the right to vote. “Tiny pockets” of any colour can represent far more human votes than a land map can show.
@BLD Read up on how Stacy Abrams and others fought voter suppression in Georgia and added over 800,000 people rightfully to the voting rolls enabling the State to go from solid Republican to likely Biden flip. Read up on how a few years earlier Republicans had purged over 3m voters from Georgia's voting rolls which stopped Stacy Abrams from rightfully winning the State Governor race in Georgia.
And that's just Georgia. Just one state. There are similar problems in many states.
Voter suppression is racism at its ugliest and its been going on for many decades but that doesn't make it less real or current.
Note to self: remember to yawn so simpletons “get you”.
@COVIDberry Wait, is Europa Universalis coming to the Switch? Did I miss an announcement? Because that would be a "preorder deluxe edition" for me.
@stipey Yes, of course. But the point is that these millions of people represent entire states outside of specific cities.
Go click on Illinois on an election map. It's a blue state, but click and then see that really it's literally blue Chicago and then a state painted red. Obviously there are republican voters in Chicago and democrats throughout the state, but the point is that people living in different areas of the same state have very different needs.
Obviously Chicago still represents enough people to swing the vote for the whole state - but then, you can't just go around ignoring the plight of literally any part of Illinois that isn't Chicago ans pretending like they're some fringe rogue faction.
@BLD True. And the extent to which the popular vote is divided, as well as the closeness of these swing states, suggests that whoever ultimately takes power is almost arbitrary based on some very crude rounding and district mapping, haha.
Ah, politics. Thanks, NintendoLife!
If Trump was really a dictator, the folks at NL wouldn't be writing this nonsense.
@JasmineDragon LOL Sorry, no - its on my personal wishlist, but I've not seen any indication at all that the game will appear on Switch. (Although - the appearance of Civ 6 was one of the great surprises of this generation, for me...)
Jokes aside.... My god, the textures. It's sad that Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (from 2004!) has better textures than this!
Dictator definition (via Dictionary.com): 1. A person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
Last I checked, there are still three branches of government in the United States. And one part of the legislative branch (the House) is actually of the opposite party of the President. That branch still has power. There are still checks and balances in this country — that actually means something. And of course, we still have elections that can affect our country; we just had one. Regardless of who wins, one half of this country is going to be disappointed with the results because it is almost a 50/50 split. Can we actually not stoop low and call the side we don't like "dictators" when we are just saying it because we don't like their politics?
If you are going to compare our government with one that has actual dictatorship (i.e. China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, etc.), then you are absolutely wrong and you are spouting a telling political ideology. You can disagree with our President, but you have no basis for saying our country is as oppressed as the countries I have listed that have ACTUAL dictators that actually fit the mold of Tropico dictators.
Shame on Nintendo Life for inciting their own political beliefs on a video game website. There is no place for that here on a news story and not an editorial opinion piece. There is a reason why people are more untrustworthy of media than ever before when we can't even get news (let alone video game news) without bias.
EDIT: I forgot to cite my source, which is a phenomenal website that actually goes in-depth of describing the various forms of dictatorships. It even lists the dictators in power right now. Funny how the United States isn't on this list. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/dictatorship-countries
@Xenobound94 @BLD @nessisonett
Since @ryancraddock popped this can with the headline, if I recall correctly, there's only one side of the American political aisle using the tools of media (social and mainstream) to attempt to censor and gaslight the other side. Only one party saying speech is violence, but violence isn't violence. Saying all political disagreement is bigotry - racism, misogyny, transphobia, islamophobia - and that there are no legitimate counterarguments to their political perspective. Saying their opponents following legal structures they don't like is illegitimate and them ignoring legal structures they don't like is fine.
I'm a mixed race Trump voter. I am happy to share the polity with people with a different vision than me for what American domestic, foreign and economic policy should be. I was presented with a choice, and I made a choice. If that makes me inhuman, so be it. But it belies the intolerance of the left that making a choice they don't like in a free and fair election makes me persona non grata.
It also suggests something about the nature of discourse today that despite the headline, despite the already present comments from others, I hesitated to post this because of the inevitable backlash it will receive.
In a pluralistic, tolerant society you must coexist with people who disagree with you on a range of issues. If you can't deal with that, the problem is in the mirror.
(Like kotaku's ps5 review, what a carwreck)
EDIT: Also, this game looks like it sucks
@nessisonett
Telling people who they voted for makes them dumb, ironically makes you the idiot (and an intolerant one at that).
Back off that kinda rhetoric 🤡
@JuiceMan_V Woah bro, just using my free speech and freedom to voice my free speech that true patriotic and free citizens freely say. Don’t need to be such a snowflake, typical conservative snowflake taking everything so seriously and jumping to the defence. Maybe you should man up and stop being a snowflake getting offended over every little thing.
Also, the clown emoji is about as obvious as having 88 tattooed on your face. I see you.
@nessisonett As I said,
"But it belies the intolerance of the left that making a choice they don't like in a free and fair election makes me persona non grata"
I have made no ad hominems nor presented my reasoning. But my choice is indicative of my intelligence (and presumably also my morality and bigotry, right?).
This is quality argumentation.
I wish I was so confident in my moral superiority and supreme intelligence that I could just believe everyone with a different perspective than me was repugnant. Seems like you should perhaps organize some trials for people unlike you to account for that crime?
Stop The Count!
Count The Votes!
@shazbot I just read the Kotaku PS5 review and it's a dumpster fire of a carwreck. But I'm sadly not too surprised because Kotaku and their writers are obsessed with leftist politics (just like that one article it had comparing the U.S. election to Majora's Mask). And don't bother looking at the comments section in any of their politically-tinged articles — where it's a one-sided massive echo chamber that applauds Kotaku's "witty" political observations... in its video game articles. Am I reading the Huffington Post or a gaming website?
News flash video game journalists: if you hate Trump, believe in woke socialism, and you drive an electric car, it doesn't make your article more enlightening when it's supposed to be news or a review on a game or a console that has NOTHING to do with politics.
Look, here's a novel idea: how about video game journalists stick with... um, video games? I'm not saying they can't express their political opinions: you have Twitter, Instagram, heck, even the forums on websites such as this one to express your views. But when you are writing a story that isn't listed as an opinion piece, keep your subjective views to yourself. "Just the facts, ma'am."
@Xenobound94
I just don't understand how their worldview is so triumphalist that everyone who has a different opinion is awful. I'm able to disagree with other reasonably held alternative positions without dehumanizing someone, insulting them or some other ridiculous behavior.
I don't see anything in the article mentioning the US election. He refers to the last few days as being "tense" and clearly they are because several people are seeing fit to bring their own personal politics into a comments section about a Nintendo game. Is it bait? For the sake of conversation let's say it is - well stop taking it. Even fish won't take everything placed on a hook. Why should you?
@nessisonett Ohh i see what you did their.I also see alot of butt hurt people in here.
@Losermagnet Because people in America are sensitive. I literally reread the article and saw nothing.
@illmatic20xx We really are. I'm really disappointed in the leagues of people stuck in their own political narrative that they force others to be a part of. We're never gonna get anywhere if you can't even read an article about a comedic sim game without reading a comments section that descends into a gaggle of blue and red geese.
Buh. In an effort to try and bring this back to relevancy: i've played some of the older Tropico games and they're pretty good. Not the most polished games but an interesting spin on a sim city type game.
@Losermagnet I got it on PC great game. Id definitely will double dip if they patch Switch version.
Looks like it's come out just in time for ex-president Trump to play with now he's finished trashing America.
@Losermagnet
It must be nice to be so ignorant.
Granted, perception is what you want it to be.
@JuiceMan_V Call it whatever you want to friend. You getting the game? Or does the subject of the article not interest you?
@Juiceman_V
@shazbot
@Xenobound94
Your boy LOST!! There is no precedent, in US history, of a more whiny, crybaby loser than Trump when it comes to, in this case, election, defeat. He alluded to his suspicions about our voting process months ago when polls showed him down, instructed states to halt counting (and then told them to stop when the numbers pleases him), and now his b*tchass tirade of lies and slander are playing out in real-time! That is fact; the votes were legally counted and he lost! He has no class, and is the Real shame here, not this suggestive article/header, shazbro!
You ALL may (need to?) move on now, 2024’ll be here before you know it...
@CodyDogg I'm not reading all that lol!
Whatever you posted, it's cool lol!
@CodyDogg I don't understand what your tirade has to do with my comments, or why it's targeted at me.
@Juiceman_V
Reading, hard!
Oh...”lol!”
@shazbot
“I'm a mixed race Trump voter.”
Your. Boy. LOST!
Better?
@CodyDogg I think you're confused about how elections work.
When I say I voted for someone, it means I cast a ballot for them. It doesn't mean I claim they won.
It's okay, I can wait while you reread my comment(s) for where I said he won.
Let me know if you need assistance.
@CodyDogg I love how you tagged me back to this article when I said nothing about my thoughts on Trump (aside from the fact I laid out how this article was being tasteless in its terminology of "dictator") in any of my posts just so you could get attention and gloat. You're telling us to move along when you stirred up a comments section that has been dormant for days? Seriously?
Let me say this in response. You're happy Biden won? Good. Let go of your Trump Derangement Syndrome and move on. There's more to life than letting the hatred of one person fester your mind. I know that may sound like sarcastic advice, but I genuinely mean it. And to be clear, I would say the exact same thing to a Trump supporter who hated Biden to that extent.
@shazbot
You’re melting! MELTING!!
@Xenobound94
If you’ve moved on, why the storied response? How about this, I’ll move on...right after you. Great advice, by the way, I think it’s starting to work.!
@CodyDogg I generally don't feed trolls, but I'm curious where this is going. What other words have you learned to capitalize?
@shazbot
To borrow from your orange overlord, I just learned this one:
STOP THE COUNT! STOP THE COUNT!! Lol...
