Overwatch has made some massive announcements in recent times under the new game director Aaron Keller, and today sees the arrival of a long-awaited update: cross-play.
Yes, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC heroes can now play together. Just be mindful that it's still technically in beta. In order to participate in cross-play, players will need to have access to a Battle.net account, which can be created for free. From here, you must link you console game and account (PC players obviously won't be required to do this), and then log in.
Players do not have to opt into cross-play and it's noted how this new feature does not include cross-progression. In other words, your progress and collection content will not carry over between sessions on different systems. In competitive matchmaking, PC players and console players will not be mixed in the same pool for competitive matches.
You can read the full cross-play FAQ over on Blizzard's website. As part of this, all players will receive a Golden Loot Box to celebrate. Will you be trying out the new cross-play feature in Overwatch? Leave a comment down below.

Kinda unfair for switch player's TBH.
@Snatcher I was playing it there on PS5 and you can filter out PC players which is what I immediately did. What’s more unfair is that there’s now parity between console and PC, meaning auto-aim abilities do more damage than they used to on console and Ana is brutal to play as now as her aiming has been nerfed on console.
Better late than never!
Oh yeah, because that "definitely" worked out for Apex Legends players on Switch.
If they had cross progression, this would matter to me. And I did hear they were looking at ways to make that a thing. We'll see if it ever happens.
@PBandSmelly 100% exactly what I was thinking. Even with a regular keyboard and mouse, you can be way more accurate than the floaty joy-cons, yikes.
Switch players have no chance against other more powerful consoles, this is a hard pass right here.
As long as I don't get any Switch players in my lobbie that will be fine. Unfortunately the Switch version just can't keep up with the other versions.
@Heavyarms55 Does it not include it? I had to sign in with my Battle.net after the patch so just assumed it did.
Dead game but... yeah no thanks. Unfair to switch users vs the 60fps on other consoles not to mention faster on PC which this game have very low requirements. Also playing this crossplay with joycon yikes.
Played a few quick play games in handheld and it was good. I got grouped with mostly other console players and felt no difference in performance before the crossplay feature. Won all games and had a fun time.
It’s great because queue times are faster and the Switch is my way to play and now I’ll be able to play with friends on other consoles and even PC.
This is really cool for queue times, but it sucks that there’s no cross-progression. Especially when games like Fortnite do it seamlessly across systems.
As a PC Overwatch player, I’m just here to send you all my condolences.
I’m sorry.
A number of people who play on consoles are able to compete against the sheer speed of PC players, and very few players can do just that at 30fps. However, I've only seen that happen in a game like Fortnite, not Apex Legends or Overwatch. I wish everyone good luck.
Oh god I won’t be playing against powerful pcs that’s for sure.
Sounds like they are losing players overall.
