Nintendo has confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons' next free update is set to launch later this week, while also teasing brand new content for the future.
In a post shared to social media today, Nintendo reveals that more free content for the game is "currently in development" for later this year. More info is set to be shared at a later date, but this certainly sounds like the refresher fans have been hoping for. In its statement, Nintendo thanks fans for their support and patience.
While we wait to see what that new content might be, the game's next update, arriving on Thursday 29th July, is essential if you wish to enjoy the upcoming weekly fireworks shows and new seasonal items:
Excited to see what this new content might be? What features would you like to see added to the game? Let us know in the comments.

The Roost please!
They've taken way too long for me and I've already moved on from this game recently. It's become less of a life sim and more of a waiting sim.
Had a good time with the game and definitely got my money's worth out of it but it's a real shame how long it's taking them to bring the actual substantial updates for this game.
I’m very charitable about the updates situation but Ninty really didn’t need to announce THIS.
Wish they had given Super Mario Party this much love, ie more tables etc
@Yosher It's indeed a shame that Nintendo didn't come up with a DLC for it, it would meet a lot of demand and also would go hand in hand with Nintendo's strategy of last years (monetize everything)
New Horizons feels like it's on life support.
I think all we can expect from this game in the future is some seasonal items to fill out that catalogue and nothing of actual substance, as the development team have moved onto Splatoon 3.
That's nice but I feel like the shipped might have sailed by now...
-they could have brought back old features or furniture sets and I would have been happy! Adding a few things to order isn't really much in terms of content - you order it in a minute and that's it.
I really hope they work hard to add content from New Leaf. This should be the definitive Animal Crossing. The fact that New Leaf has more content is embarrassing.
If they add all the old stores (especially the Roost) from NL I’d be so giddy! Though I’m not holding my breath.
@MSTRDM While I agree, I didn't even mean DLC, but moreso the free updates they promised and people actually expected, like at the VERY least allowing the shop to be upgraded more than once.
Extra paid DLC would be cool though, but dunno how well that would be received in a game like this.
Brewster, gyroids and more Nintendo-themed items
Nah, too late for me. Over this game.
I've given ACNH 155 hours of my life and for me, that's quite a significant amount. I've never played any of the earlier versions, so can't compare directly. From reading comments there's a good chunk of content the devs could include and I would certainly spend more time on the game should new, substansive content or functionality arrive.
Haven’t played this since the first week of July. Need some decent content for me to get back in to it for more than a couple of days
Meh. Why do I need to waste time shooting down balloons to craft yet another type of wreath?
@Burning_Spear
Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to distribute time-exclusive recipes by random chance from missable balloons that spawn every 5 or 10 minutes?
Unless it is a big update like a store upgrade or new building I can't see myself going back.
Good to hear. I still play. Not as much as I was in the beginning. But any new (or returning) content will be welcomed
Thank goodness, I no longer have to have my recommendation tab on YouTube filled with animal crossing clickbait from guys like switch force and nintentalk. But I myself lost interest in the game before last summer. New leaf was so much better
I think people forget that when we bought Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, what was on the disc was what we got. We didn't get quarterly updates or changes... we got what we got and were happy with oh my god I sound like my grandfather...
Still my point is valid... I guess...
Anyway, Brewster confirmed for Smash!
Few months too late Nintendo...
Haven't visited my island in months, and new (seasonal) 'content' is not going to win me back.
Half of all these teasers they keep giving out about 'future content' (see that bit from NoA's president a few hours after the E3 no-show, and now this message), makes it seem like they are sheepish about not adding anything new, but don't really want to commit resources to doing so (despite how many folks about the game).
Either say 'long-awaited', 'substantial', 'adds hours and hours', or even 'big', or maybe stop kidding the players......
Wish for these stuffs:
1. More crops, fruits and vegetables
2. HHA office
3. Cafe
4. Foods and drinks recipes
5. Rideable vehicles
6. Interactable objects
7. Mini games, Arcade
8. Barechest for boys, please + swimming trunks, not wetsuit. Mii can barechest in Boxing and beach sports.
I'm not sure this "more free content" will amount to much apart from the usual event unlock and some additional items, as it feels like the AC dev team have largely moved onto other things. I had my fun with game but I've long since moved on from it now, not really complaining though as I got about the same amount out of it as older AC games, sitting through an entire year with it. For those hanging on for a new big blowout update though, it's unlikely that that sort of thing is going to happen.
I wanted to go back to playing New Horizons, but unless there's something significant like for example, Tortimer Island Mystery Tours, Club LOL, the Roost, and/or some kind of upgrade for Nook's store, just for starters added to the game, then I doubt i'll play as frequently as i used to.
Nintendo have missed a lot of opportunities from not adding stuff from New Leaf, and maybe from other games too.
Please don't allow it to wither away, Nintendo, because this really would be such a shame.
I still visit the island almost every day. I am pretty content with my island. Just as I like to take a real walk in the morning, so too I like to walk around the island for a while.
Maybe because my life now is very unpredictable, playing a simple game is more calming.
Whatever it is, it's too little, too late. I've not played since last December. Not sure why I've not sold it on yet
After 500 hours last year I haven't played in several months so I have to ask this now - did the game not have fireworks for July 4th and is only getting them now for August? My entire family watched the display last year the night of July 4th.
Had a wonderful time with the game, together with my whole family, but we moved on. Highly doubt anything will pull me back in, unless I start off completely from the beginning.
yay more lackluster updates for Animal Crossing New Horizon, the game is oficialy dead for me.
I think most people are done with this game. I stopped playing it a while back and only open the game to make sure the weeds aren't getting out of control and that I get interest on my bells
Nintendo where is the good updates for Animal Crossing New Horizon? where is Brewster and the QOL improvements such as Bulk Crafting or a shopping cart option to Able Sisters/ Nook Cranny?
@nessisonett
I've had a large section of my island set up for a cafe front for Roost for over a year now! This is my biggest want from Nintendo right now.
Funny reading the comments of people complaining about the lack of updates. This game doesn't need updates.
It’s not gonna be big update, is it? It’ll literally just be weekly fireworks and a handful of seasonal items. Anything more would be getting a bigger announcement than this.
Pocket camp with a better august update…. Such. Disservice to the longevity of the game. It doesn’t make sense, especially with how many “units” the switch has sold.
It's a great game, but it had more potential, and the updates have just gone downhill rapidly over the last year. It's just too little too late.
@blindsquarel I unsubscribed completely from SwitchForce for this exact reason. Here's a 10-minute video (mis)interpreting a random sighting in an Animal Crossing preview.
And New Leaf WAS so much better.
Fans: "We thought you were dead!"
Miiverse: "No, just upgraded"
gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids gyroids
The page on NOJ shows it’s just nookphone seasonal items, probably one of the worst aspects of the game as they use that thing as a crutch to add stuff without actually integrating it into a game by adding holiday events . Any other developer would be giving this game nice updates for years but Nintendo won’t do ungoing support with few exceptions.
Really all I want is to be able to get more than 8 inclines. 10 total would be perfect.
Mmm-Hmm. Yeah, I bet is just a couple of items to get at the store and that's it.
It's strange seeing all these commenters talking about how they're over the game, as if it was just some passing trend. Animal Crossing is a game you can dip in and out of over the years if you really want to. The whole point is that it's a relaxing game and you experience it's hundreds of hours of content over a long period of time.
If you've dropped the game because you've completed all of that and you're unhappy that Nintendo haven't raced to keep up with you when releasing content, are you really playing the right series for yourself?
As the game sold so well, Nintendo would do well by adding new substantive additions to the game. This game could have very long legs if they keep adding content and it should be an evergreen title.
But they need to go big! Not just the drip feed of new items and such.
The Roost & Tortimer Island plz!!
I still play this on a daily basis. But it definitely needs more content. New Leaf on 3DS still feels like the better game in some situations.
@LXP8 I agree with that. But at the same time I feel it lacks a bigger sense of community and things to do than, let's say, New Leaf.
Here in Horizons they gave more emphasis to DIY stuff and decorate and shape your island. Which is nice. But you just can decorate and change your island so many times until you say "that's enough". New leaf made you feel like you were in a town, villagers felt more genuine and upgrading the main street felt like an achievement. Horizons feels more barren in comparison.
I still like the game and keep playing it but I do miss that sense of community and personality New leaf had.
Honestly, I’d love to see some significant new content for the game. I’ve played over 1,000 hours since it came out, and still pop in for 15-20 minutes most days just to keep my island tidy, walk around and do some seasonal decoration adjustments, but as relaxing as it is, I’m not anywhere near as motivated to keep playing as I once was.
I’d LOVE to see stuff like the Roost, a couple more Nook’s Cranny upgrades, gyroids, some returning furniture sets from the older games (or, even better, some furniture from Pocket Camp, which somehow keeps getting a lot of lovely content), Zelda-themed items and villagers for the anniversary, fence customisation, and other stuff like that. Nothing ground-breaking, but I bet it would definitely pull a ton of players back.
Ehhh they'd better have a really good update. I enjoyed the game for ages but I really thought we'd have things like the Roost, more shops and more characters by now.
I got a lot of fun out of this game so I'm not complaining, but ideally I would have liked to see more from the updates. That maze game was pretty fun, I thought we were going to see more of that sort of thing!
Edit: After playing the update I am so pleasantly surprised.
As much as I'd like to speculate what the update could be I've moved on at this point, which is a shame to see when I played new leaf for nearly 4 years before getting tired of it. A game that only had one major update in its lifetime
I really tried to keep things amusing and stay with the daily routine, but stopped playing about 2 days ago, and not sure I'll come back
@LXP8 I mean, judging by how the game has actively less content than any other in the series, it’s understandable. I’m a huge animal crossing fan, and have been since Wild World, but playing New Horizons, and taking it slow, I ended up quitting 100 hours in. Most people would discredit my opinion, stating that 100 hours is enough time, but anyone who’s played animal crossing would know that 100 hours is equal to about 10 hours in any other game. You can’t properly judge a new animal crossing game until you get about a year into it.
This being said, I never powered through the game, and yet I still did mostly everything there was to do. The game barely had nothing more than a year of content, and lacks things like proper progression for the content that they’ve been drip feeding. Nothing feels earned, and unless your heavy into customization, there’s not much to work for. Doesn’t help that shop upgrades don’t exist in this game, aside from one single one you get after a month of playing.
@Yorumi other games in the series never had this issue honestly. They at least had enough content to get folks by for 4-5 years without getting bored.
New leaf made it to where you had to spend bells to upgrade everything, making it to where you had a pretty slow progression, which felt cathartic.
I feel left out, I can't access the new content because of how busy I am, I don't regret buying animal crossing NH but it's the pace of the game which leaves me limited to what content I can access, I hate it!
@thisisatest it's time consuming and demanding honestly 😏😏
That's live services for you 😤😤
I'd be happy if they just made it so Redd turned up more. I've played every day since launch, and I'm still missing half his stuff.
Nook Cranny expansions and gyroids please.
@Jooles_95 agreed and where is the metroid.
@Anti-Matter this is so ripe for mini games!
Let the team behind AC:Pocket Camp do the updates. They do not seem to lack imagination.
And please make an option so we can have music from older games - the new music mostly sucks!
@LavaTwilight hi. I think not we, the customer, forgot that, but Nintendo did. They should have released a full game from the start. NH is lacking content af. While we are in the digital age and it’s viable to add extra content later, and New Leaf greatly profited from it, it’s not an excuse to publish as shell - and still nothing of significance was added to New Horizons, only things you could’ve expected to be in there from the start (while still too little).
Love New Horizons. 480 hours, and I still play almost daily (some days more than others), but more content is always welcome. Hopefully Nintendo has plans for something substantial.
@Yorumi @MervTheMan Well the GCN was my first and only previous Animal Crossing experience. I miss that we can have so many villagers on our island (was it 15?) but otherwise I still hold NH has more than the original. Maybe I'm forgetting things but that's how it seems. Of course, I didn't sink hundreds of hours into NH in the first month like others did due to the lockdown so I still had lots to do as they were updating us with new content.
Also I can't comment on New Leaf, I hear a lot of love for it but also that it also received additional QOL DLC down the line? So maybe by the end of NH, it will have the same quality.
It'll be a shame though if people have lost interest in it. I'm still playing and enjoying NH regularly so I guess I'm one of the lucky few?
@1ofUs exactly the lack of good updates for the game and other games in my backlog, made my stop playing my Animal Crossing New Horizon daily.
Can't wait, still playing after 1250 hours or so, but it would be nice to get some more content, not that I think the game is lacking in anyway, it just had different content than previous entries in the series.

There are a lot of hurt butts on here! Lol…I get some of the frustration , ACNH updates have been arriving at bit of a slow drip like pace…BUT…it’s Free! If you’ve already played the game to death and it’s only been out a little over 1 yr….I’d imagine it’s a really good game no? It’s received a number of seasonal and event updates already , they could have charged us DLC prices? They announce that new content is coming this week and they’re working on even more updates and ppl are actually complaining!? I’m just trying to understand the sense of entitlement…sounds like Nintendo could give ppl a free Switch and they’d still complain they didn’t get 2 lol…anyway just be patient ppl. This is actually good news. Besides there are so many other great games to tie u over in the meantime….
@LavaTwilight that’s really old skool, Kudos to that. The NGC version is praised for the abundance of dialogue (monologue, let‘s be real) and of course it is otherwise quite outdated, yet it has a lot of charm, as does New Leaf, even if already a litte bit less. New Leaf though had so many improvements, a café, a dog’s police station, a whole island of mini games you could even play with friends or online with the community, still loveable characters, and lots and lots of furniture and upgrades (of stores in particular). Then in the end even the amiibo update and camp site. Also, the music. I mean just look at items for pocket camp, and what you have in NH. AC is for many a game about interior design and in game clothing. Idk, all of these points have been brought forward over and over and unfortunately, NH “only” brought terraforming and crafting to the table, that’s it, while it lacks all other steps forward, plus it has been dumbed down in the music and villager department to a degree that’s not even funny, while failing to provide any ongoing development of the “outside” world (aka the town) or a comprehensive catalogue of items! For me, it’s a miss on the dna of the franchise.
@Yorumi,
None of the previous entries have anywhere near as much varied dialogue as New Horizons, I played New leaf for around 550 hours and it was all repetition after around 200 hours or so, in New Horizons my villagers still say new things after over 1250 hours, you just have to get past the initial repetitive exchanges, and talk to them more.
@johnvboy weird I’ve never read this from
anyone nor experienced it myself
I have two characters maybe in NH that actually started to suddenly speak much more much later in the game. Most times, as you know, they say the same thing a hundred of times from the “beginning”.
@Yorumi,
To be honest it's been my experience with the game since a little while after launch, up to that point it was pretty much the same as all the other games in terms of repeated dialogue.
@Yorumi
I see where your coming from but did they actually CUT the content out of ACNH or are they simply releasing it over timed intervals free of charge? There’s a difference, also did they just raise the cost for ACHN or was it inflation within the industry itself thats raised the cost of games? Keep in mind those other AC titles were released on previous hardware such as DS and GameCube….all gaming costs have increased since then.
Splatoon used a similar approach with Splatfests and free gear/weapons upgrades and it added value to the game years after I purchased it. I get ppl want full customization options, more items and buildings sprinkled in…but maybe what they’re looking for is closer to SimCity or the Sims. I’m just glad that there’s still a lot more to look fwd to in ACNH and it’s not costing us anything other than our time.
@Mountain_Man I recently started playing daily again (600 hours) after watching some streamers build their islands around themes, or “cores”, as they call it. It gave me a goal in the game and I like the slow pace nature of doing tasks. It’s going to take some time to complete these projects, but that’s sort of the point I think. It gives me a relaxing and zen like experience ever every time I play.
Who's still playing this (unless you got the game recently)
@emperor_ing @SalvorHardin Yes. The update coming this week is for fireworks and seasonal items. It also says more content is being worked on for later in the year. We'll just have to wait and see what that other content actually is.
I know everyone is tired of this excuse. But I do wonder if the ongoing pandemic really affected the schedule for updates (along with other things) more than we suspect.
An awful reminder that this game had so much more potential in the second half of 2020 had the game offered a constant, healthy flow of content. I only now consider this game's success to happen by chance. Had COVID not existed, this game would've died much earlier in favour of the much bigger Super Mario 35th Anniversary.
@Deepdoop
"Who's still playing this ?"
Me.
Some updated info about new update from AbdallahSmash video.
Played like 300 hours, people complaining there wasn't enough to do.
@ModdedInkling "Had COVID not existed, this game would've died much earlier..."
I disagree. I think part of the disenchantment with New Horizons stems from the fact that a lot of people had too much time on their hands, so they binged on New Horizons, playing for hours a day for weeks and burned themselves out on it. That's really not how Animal Crossing is designed, and not even New Leaf could hold up to such intense and focused play. The fact that some New Horizons players are complaining about not having a full museum, or all crafting recipes after less than a year suggests they are approaching Animal Crossing with the wrong mindset. It's supposed to be something you dip into for 15 or 20 minutes a day between other games, but due to the pandemic, there seemed to be this rush by some people to "beat" the game as quickly as possible, and now they're complaining that there's nothing left to do.
@Yorumi That's "the glass is half empty" thinking. It's true that New Leaf had certain features that New Horizons doesn't have, but it's also true that New Horizons has a number of significant features that New Leaf doesn't have.
@Yorumi I'm sure if you put your mind to it, you could come up with a list of design deficiencies for New Leaf as well — for instance, the stupidly random method for getting town project requests; the fact that progression in New Leaf largely consisted of tediously grinding for bells; that by far the most efficient way to earn bells was to farm beetles on Tortimer's Island; an aggravating grass wear mechanic that could turn your town into a muddy wasteland if you weren't careful; villagers who would move out without warning; and so on.
So, is New Leaf perfect? No. Are there things I wish it did differently? Yes. Does that prevent it from being an enjoyable game? No. And you could say the exact same ting about New Horizons.
This was a rushed game that's being used to milk online membership. Its not a Animal Crossing. Its a Scam Horizons. YEARS of development....and yet nothing to show for it. $60 falsely advertised early access alpha product. Nintendo hit a new low with this 'game'. Glad I'm sticking to the older games. More content and features.
@Yorumi "The main criticism of NH is that it cut a ton of content out of the game..."
And the main compliment for New Horizons is that it added a ton of new content that wasn't in previous Animal Crossing games while maintaining the core mechanics.
See? You're a "glass is half empty" kind of thinker.
@Deepdoop got on release, still playing every single day have around 4,000+ hours and still enjoying every minute of this great game 🙂
@Yorumi
I'm already content with ACNH.
ACNH was the game that finally met my expectations: Keep the villagers forever without losing them randomly, more building sims aspect, less yada yada yada conversations, No nagging Resetti, No blah blah blah Lyle, No lame Dr Shrunk, Easy ways to get specific villagers by using Amiibo cards, crafting items, Better Time Travel exploit trick to get rare villagers visit my island. I'm already content with these new features despite still lack of some older contents at the moment.
@CodyMKW
Already more than 4000+ hours ?! 🤯
Man... You have broke the record of Grandma Audrey gameplay hours (3500+ for ACNL)
Mine is still 620+ hours gameplay.
How many hours did you play each day ?
@Yorumi "The list of cut content is enormous, the list of added content in miniscule."
At least that's your opinion.
@Yorumi Whether the "cut" content represents an "enormous" deficit, and the new content merely a "miniscule" addition is a matter of opinion.
We need more meteor showers! And new DIY recipes, especially for the holidays.
@Anti-Matter These are definitely things I have been expecting way before the announcement of the official name of the game, except number 5. Were you expecting we could use a bike for example?
@Ymas443
Well, just like Yokai Watch, you can ride on it to travel your island faster. And the villagers should be able to ride vehicles too if you give them a vehicle.
