Re: Virtual Boy Is Being Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Really excited about this. Should have been done from r the 3DS but wasn't, but glad they didn't miss the boat twice. Personally I love the fact that they are releasing a replica headset to be able to simulate the whole experience.

Pre-order placed.

Re: Hardware Classics: Sega Master System

I had a MS 1 when I was younger, but I oy had a handful of games. I remember being so impressed with the smooth scrolling and control in Hang On, and the graphical enhancements in Prince of Persia.

I now have a MS II which I adore and play regularly, along with a handful of games that hold nostalgia value for me.

A great system.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's N64 Library With Another Game

@GameOtaku you have a good point, but Nintendo (and many other digital firms) go down the subscription route as it provides a predictable flow of cash, and more money over the long term. Nintendo don't want you to only pay once. Consumer friendly? No, but it benefits their bottom line.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's SNES Library With Three More Titles

rob7979

Hopefully this will mean they will also release the superior Fatal Fury Special in due course and other SNK SNES / mega drive releases.

Also glad to see a Satellite game being released. Wasn't there a Satellite version of Zelda 1 exclusive? That would be an awesome piece of history to see that released on here down the road.

Re: Best Of 2024: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?

rob7979

I really enjoyed this article. It made me skim through my super play magazine collection which lightly covered the system launch, and later some short reviews of the launch games which adds some context from the time. The expectation was this would be a VR system with 3D graphics i.e. polygons, which it wasn't. At the time PlayStation and Saturn were just out, and that was where the hard earned dollars went.

I do now love this system (played once at a friend's house in the early 2000s) but can now appreciate it for the odd creature this is. Would love to one day add it as the jewel in the crown of my retro collection

Re: Don't Expect Any More Miniature Consoles From Sega

rob7979

@Coalescence I agree with you, but that still leaves the master system ripe for a mini. The original sold strong numbers in Europe and South America, so there should be demand for such a product, alongside the Sega faithful.

I'd love to see a product like that, with say 30 curated games on and 2 pads. Should be easy money for Sega because all the basic hardware components are already here and cheap to mass produce.

Re: Poll: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Is Out Today, Will You Be Getting It?

rob7979

I find the digital versions frustrating as they have to undertake a check online to ensure you own the game (at least I think that is what they are doing).

As I play my switch frequently off line on the go (car journeys) then this results in me being unable to access something I have paid for which is frustrating.

I have 3 of these titles already for my Xbox 360 - again digital only. Given the age I f that Co sole the wireless is becoming temperamental which again prevents me from accessing the title.

I want to play these titles for a long time to come, but would rather not to have to reline capcoms pockets for the privilege. That's why, for me, the physical copy is the way to go.

Re: Video: Nintendo Treehouse Plays Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

I appreciate everyone's position and circumstances are different. For me, the NSO service is a better deal than owning the games. I already own most people f the retro games I want on the original hardware I purchased in the 90s (N64, SNES) and I have a NES minim frankly, the last thing I want is to have to purchase these games on the Switch, and then again on the Switch 2. I've already tried that with my 3DS and Wii.

I would never have purchased the number of games that I now have access to via NSO, so this is the right solution for me. For the retro games I do own (largely cart only, no box or instructions to manage costs), I have a huge backlog that realistically I am going to struggle to make a reasonable headway into until my children are grown and left home.

As I said at the start of this post, I do appreciate that the circumstances we approach "what is best for me" will be individual to us all.

Needless to say I have pre-ordered this bad boy and remain super excited.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Reigns Supreme At The Science Museum's 'Power UP' Exhibition

I went pre-COVID with my 2 sons and brother- we all had a brilliant time (went for the double session).

No Mortal Kombat is a change from last time around - they had a promotional picture of a young girl playing mortal kombat 2 in the previous promotional video!!

Will definitely be trying to go again in 2022.

Great article BTW and interesting insights.

Re: Random: Discover How Mode 7 Works On Super NES, In Just 10 Minutes

rob7979

Mode 7 goodness - in the right hands and used correctly used this changed the face of driving games.

Was interesting how the Megadrive developers pushed that hardware to make up for a lack of mode 7 (Road Rash, Toy Story driving section) a great example how healthy competition benefits all.

thanks for the terrific article.

Re: Retro: How A Remarkable Street Fighter Port Soured The Relationship Between Capcom And Nintendo

rob7979

Terrific article, thanks for shedding fresh light on the shinanigans back in the day.

The decision to make the N64 a cart based system was purely a financial decision with gameplay and load times then used to justify. I can’t recall a single PS1 game or sega Saturn game ruined by load times….and just look at the load times we now have on systems (including Nintendos own!).
