This came out whilst I was a Uni and we all loved it! Great 4 player fun and relatively straight forward to get into but hard to master. Captain Falcon was in a god like tier by himself! Nothing better than ruling the roost with Jigglypuff!
Some fantastic collections on here, which have through reading has brought back a lot of excellent memories. If I remember correctly I had the following
1) super Mario world 2) f zero 3) street fighter 2 WW 4) SF2 turbo 5) super SF2 6) fatal fury special 7) Mortal Kombat 2 8) nba jam 9) fifa 10) John madden football 11) Mario all stars 12) super ghouls and ghosts 13) super smash tv 14) super bomber man 15) smash tennis 16) INternational superstar soccer 17) prince of Persia 18) flashback 19) Zelda 20) PLOK 21) equinox 22) Axelay 23) pilotwings 24) shadowrun 25) secret of mana 26) rock n roll racing 27) super Mario kart 28) star wing 29) stunt race fx 30) vortex
My first console - I clearly remember running home from the store with the street fighter pack in firmly gripped under my arm. These days re physical collecting I focus on quality vs quantity.
For those who have never read any of Bitmap’s books I can heartily recommend them. I purchased the Neo geo book some years ago and still regularly read it still
@MaseSco good point, although not sure how well those football games sold in North America at the time (for the record I loved both at the time, although only SS holds up well today IMP). Maybe Speedball 2 would have been an awesome compromise?
Played mine last night. I htought I was going to invest in some 6 button controllers but changed my mind after playing, as I found the solution pressing start better than I envisaged (at least on Eternal Champions).
42 really is alot of games, and am now thinking twice whether I eventually hack this bag of tricks. I was surprised they missed off virtua racing as, at the time, it was such a ground breaking title. Other than that most of the key historic games / genres are well covered (other than sports - Mutant League Sports would have been the way to go as would avoid NHL/NFL licensing issues).
Does it come with a test demo CD to show the capabilities of the hardware? Or is it limited to playing SNES carts due to a lack of software? Unsure whether the cd unit also had hardware improvements (as per the mega cd) or is solely to allow SNES games to be played in the medium and benefit from the larger storage?
MK 1, 2 and 3 were definitely the worst offenders and incredibly cheap. The cpu reading of your inputs was blatant. I never completed 2 or 3, even on novice. Was still a great 2 player game, but I do remember thinking at the time it was broken.
SF2 also cheated, but somehow seemed less blatant call Mortal Kombat.
Mario Kart was another rage fuelled experience on 150cc. Even the thwomps ted their descent to get you, whilst the cpu literally drove right on through!
Can’t wait for this to arrive on my door mat 4/10/19! I never had a mega drive as a young lad (was a fierceSNES fanboy) but time heals wounds and am really excited to have this under the TV. Great game selection - perhaps mutant league hockey could have circumnavigated the NHL licensing issues and thus allowed the inclusion of sports games?
Both SF2 and Eternal Champions play better on a 6 button pad.
@YANDMAN I agree - the button layout doesn’t fill me with confidence! Shame this couldn’t have been a replica of the excellent neogeo cd kidney bean joystick
Key for me is 1) emulation (should be okay) 2) quality of the actual stick (neogeo x sticks used the same moulds as the original aes stick but used inferior internal parts) 3) games and 4) price (also need to factor in that you will likely want 2 of these to take advantage of all those fighting games
Totally awesome add ons! Does seem odd that they are for decorative purposes only, a short list of games for each would have been fantastic. Still a lot of fun
@N00BiSH Good point, Sega has done an awesome job here. Plus impossible to keep everyone happy as we all have our favourites. I can’t wait to get this bad boy!
I am really surprised they missed of Virtua Racing. It was such a technical feat at the time vs superFX, and it is still playable today. I just hope this can be hacked without removing the M2 emulation.
Would want to see some 16 bit games to make this interesting. And yes, claymates is a solid and under appreciated SNES platformer (my 2 children both are hooked on it)
My issue with the inclusion of street fighter 2 is that it is a wasted spot. Clearly still good value at 39 games, but given Sega wanted to give us 40 games then they really should ensure those 40 games are playable: SF2 isn’t on a 6 button controller.
Swap it for MUSHA (Jap only at this stage) or California Games (awesome multiplayer fun).
I never used to mind the slow down. As others have already said, seemed like my good ol chum Mr SNES was giving a helping hand when the action hotted up
Great review. I remember being envious of the mega drive release back in the day (I had a SNES) as it really ran quickly with a lot of cars on track. Shame there were no other SVP games released, as it had great potential (not withstanding the obscene RRP!).
Game boy classic all the way - that would be awesome to see. I’m not personally convinced on the N64, as for me, many of the games have not dated so well
I’m still wondering if they’ll be putting VF2 on to cover the 1 on 1 genre. Given the 3 button pad they’ve backed themselves into a bit of a corner, as MK and SF2 both play poorly on the 3 button pad.
Really pleased to see Sega pulling out all the stops. This is now a must have purchase. Agree with the comments regarding the World of Illusion co-op: it really is awesome. Can’t wait for the last 20 games and further surprises. Sunset riders? Virtual racing? Some EA titles

Re: Feature: Luigi And Video Gaming's Other Palette Swap Heroes
Great article! How about the Sega Saturn Daytona USA car palette swaps that added depth and a little more variety versus the arcade iteration?

Well written article and a really enjoyable read - thank you!
