Re: This Sealed Super Mario Bros. Has Just Become The Most Expensive Video Game Collectable Ever

impurekind

@Curbie

"As someone who actually plays retro games, this stuff annoys me. I don't care about a sealed Mario, I care that other games I and others want to buy and play are having their values inflated because now everyone is buying up old games in the hopes they'll get in on this. I recommended Bucky O'Hare to a friend, they laughed and said it goes for over a hundred dollars loose now. A bunch of rich trouserstains are using video games as their money making playground the same way they did with comics and it's annoying as hell."

This right here ^^^

Especially once you start talking these prices, you know this was done by a bunch of speculative *ss-hats trying to artificially inflate a market to do little more than make easy money off auction fees and the like from a bunch of either gullible morons or people with far too much money and not enough sense.

And that is why this is so wrong.

Re: Talking Point: Is The N64 Pad Actually The Best Controller Ever?

impurekind

@Smigit Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was some genius at Rare that thought to do it rather than something Nintendo intended/documented from the start, but that is precisely the thing about amazing hardware because it allows for such awesome creative uses. I mean, you certainly couldn't do dual analog control for an fps on the original PlayStation controllers, or any kind of analog control for that matter, hence why Sony outright copied Nintendo and then iterated on its unique N64 controller design to end up with the Dual Analog controller. The incredibly smart and talented people are Rare used it to do something no one had ever done previously on a home console, and that's partly because it simply wasn't possible on any home console previously. And that is the meat of my point: The N64 controller was absolutely revolutionary and paradigm-shifting, it allowed creative people to do some truly wonderful things that simply hadn't been done before, and it's more than earned its due.

Re: Talking Point: Is The N64 Pad Actually The Best Controller Ever?

impurekind

Let me tell you this: It's a lot better than many people these days give it credit for. And at the time it was far beyond anything seen before in any previous home console controller designs--calling it revolutionary and paradigm-shifting is not overstating things--and I guarantee it was also beyond anything anyone on this site ever thought up at the time, and likely since too, so credit where credit is due.

How many controllers have ever offered this level of versatility for playing so many different types of games both old and new:

https://i.imgur.com/QABlI9e.png (old school SNES style plus two totally unique configurations, including being both left and right handed friendly, and it introduced most of us to proper analog thumbstick control for the first time as well as rumble too)

And 99% of people don't even know you can hold one in each hand by the centre prong to play games like GoldenEye 64 and Perfect Dark dual analog, which means it was the first controller ever to be designed in such a way that it actually allowed for this (long before Sony ever nicked the idea):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDQ_ri2ZbY4

It's also still one of the most comfortable controllers to hold to date (for people who actually hold it correctly--some genuinely don't).

If you honestly don't see the genius in this controller then I think you're showing your ignorance and/or sheep-like thinking where you just spout the same old trash talk that a bunch of other tweens and weak minds like to spout these days.

Re: Qualcomm Is Reportedly Working On A "Knockoff" Switch, Powered By Android

impurekind

@The_Mysteron No, you said the following after my initial and brief comment in response to your gif: "I don't know what qualifies you to say that, because you absolutely can send a cease and desist letter if you believe a competitor has copied your product design. 🤔". And that is what I responded to with a much longer post further clarifying my point and stance. So don't try to pretend like I just went off on a rant without any reason--YOU gave me a perfectly good reason to dive further down this rabbit hole.

Re: Qualcomm Is Reportedly Working On A "Knockoff" Switch, Powered By Android

impurekind

@The_Mysteron Well, technically speaking, you can send a cease and desist letter for whatever reason you like in this life. But that does not equal any merit in said letter, and it certainly won't justify any legal expenses if there is no merit other than "They made a portable device that's going to compete with ours, and you can take of the controller parts in some way". And I don't think Nintendo will be sending any letters in cases like this where there is likely zero merit, because lawyers and legal cases cost a lot! Although, we've yet to see the actual device, so let's see if it's an actual copy of Nintendo's patents and/or trademarks and/or copyright or not....

Me . . . I doubt it.

The main point I'm making is that people like you like to throw around this idea that Nintendo has the right to shut down anyone and anything that even remotely resembles any of its works in any form, and that's not how this stuff works--and it's not a good habit to be encouraging imo.

Example: Nintendo could issue a cease and desist on a company for literally using its copyrighted Mario art in their product, such as directly ripping Mario sprites from one of its games, or even using art that is so close to Mario's design that most people would assume it is a use of the copyrighted and trademarked material. But it couldn't "cease and desist" the following design (because it literally uses none of Nintendo's copyrighted/trademarked art/designs--at all):

https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/000/387/056/large/andrew-domachowski-mario-web3.jpg?1443929669

Any image of a plumber dude wearing some red and blue overalls is not immediately breaching Nintendo's copyright.

Any portable console that has detachable mini controllers is not instantly breaching Nintendo's Switch/Joy-Con patents.

If there is no actual use of copyrighted/trademarked/patented works then there is literally zero legal case there.

Nintendo is already abusing its power enough as is in this regard, and there's already too many too ignorant people who fall victim to it far too often, so fanboys really need to stop immediately handing Nintendo absolute power over everything as a matter of habit imo.

Re: Feature: Best Game Boy Advance (GBA) Games

impurekind

Mother 3 is, imo, theee best GBA game, and indeed one the best of any games of all time as far as I'm concerned. It's a stone cold masterpiece and one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had in this medium. I'm so happy to see it on this list, and I hope it encourages more people to search out the fan-made English translation and give it a go.

Re: Random: Talented Hacker Bumps The Frame Rate Of SNES Race Drivin' From 4fps To 30

impurekind

Looks like he can either get Star Fox [potentially] running at 30 fps but with a slight resolution drop, or 20 fps at the same resolution. So, me personally, I'd go with the original resolution at a solid 20 fps. I think dropping the resolution would kinda stop it being the same game, unless he can do this in a way that basically isn't really perceptible to the untrained eye, I guess.

Re: Sega Denies It Has Anything To Do With Crazy Taxi Clone Taxi Chaos

impurekind

@Magician No it doesn't. There isn't a single element of this game that is copyrighted by Sega. Sega doesn't own the copyright on a game where you drive a taxi around do stuff. It owns the copyright on all the actual art, music and code from the original(s), and it probably has a trademark on the exact Crazy Taxi name and log, and that is it. Unless this game is using one of those things, Sega doesn't have a legit case, and anyone who says or even awards otherwise doesn't really know what the hell they are talking about or doing.

Re: Sega Denies It Has Anything To Do With Crazy Taxi Clone Taxi Chaos

impurekind

There is nothing to be "investigated": You can't patent or copyright gameplay systems like this--driving a taxi around pickup up some passengers and stuff--and nothing else about this idea is copyrighted or patented by Sega that it could violate either. If you're paying lawyers to do this "investigation" then they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Re: Rare's Cancelled N64 Project Dinosaur Planet Has Been Leaked Online

impurekind

Also, this is now two leaked builds from past [potential] versions of Rare games (this and also the GoldenEye 64 remaster). I feel like something is at play here, like maybe Microsoft is thinking about releasing new versions of these or something and it just testing the waters by "leaking" out the old builds to see how people react (God knows how they'd get past the licensing and stuff though). Or, it could be some dude who works/worked for Rare that has a few versions of various games stored on a drive and is slowly leaking them all out just because. Happy to see all these leaks though, especially since Nintendo never saw fit to allow either version both the leaked titles.

Re: Controversial Rising Sun Design Removed From Street Fighter II's Re-Release

impurekind

@GannonBanned Well, you've taught me my lesson--fo sho!

I guess we should go in and censor all those thousands of classical paintings portraying the likes of violence against both men and women, acts of war, various sexual and sexually perverse acts, various naked/tortured/sexualised/etc depictions of various religious deities, and so on, that some people would find offensive too then?

Let's just delete all of history, and all works of historical significance, and all artistic creations, and so on--don't wanna upset anyone....

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Skyward Sword Is Good, Actually

impurekind

It's actually one of my favourite Zelda games (I've only actually completed two Zelda games in my life, despite being alive for them all, and this is one of them), and indeed one of my favourite games in general:

https://inceptionalnews.wordpress.com/2016/08/18/my-favourite-games-of-all-time-part-3/

So, yeah, I agree with you for the most part (other than the reasoning behind thinking Ghirahim was bad. I actually thought he was a great villain).

Also, I think this new HD version has a chance to be even better when played with button-only controls, although I really do hope they've been smart enough to include an option to still use the basic gyro for aiming bows and stuff more accurately in this mode too.

Re: Panic Button Explains Why DOOM Eternal's Cutscenes Run At 20fps On Switch

impurekind

@Elvie Yes, correct. But the same could be said of any game running at 30 fps too for example, where the TV or screen is actually refreshing at 60 Hz but the game is only showing one image every two frames (either with duplicates or blanks in between). And all of the various mediums are similarly displaying in such a way that the devices are typically running on TVs/screens with 60 Hz refresh rates (if we ignore TVs and PC with even higher refresh rates for a second) but fitting whatever the source frame rate is into that via the same duplication or blanking method, be the original source a video game or an animation or a movie or a home made video or whatever. Or at least that's how I would think it would work based on the little I know of such things. So, for all intents and purposes, it's still fine to say that many animations are running at 12 fps.

Re: Video: Here's Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Looking Stunning In 4K, 60FPS

impurekind

Shows just how gorgeous these games could be if Nintendo did something similar....

Although, I think I still prefer it just running in 4K without the textures changed by a fan modder:

Also, just to be clear, these games can be played not just in 4K, but in stereoscopic 3D on a giant virtual cinema screen too, at least when run through an emulator like Dolphin in an App like Bigscreen running on a VR headset like the Oculus Rift (sounds convoluted, and it kinda is, but it's worth it).

And it's stunning!

Re: Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection Director Finally Reveals The Deal Behind Arthur's Underwear

impurekind

I kinda like the art style, but at the same time I don't think it's quite the perfect choice for realizing the original art now in HD in 2020, at least in my opinion. I think a more cartoon/illustration or Disney feature-animation look and style would have worked better, maybe akin to what some of the best scenes from stuff like Snow White, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, etc would have looked like, and in particular with more proper animation going on too (rather than looking a bit like cut-out pieces being rotated), and would have really captured the original art's look and feel in modern times. Think of that Mickey Mania game on Genesis but in HD and with proper hand-done cartoony/illustrated artwork, or something like that....

Re: Konami Shmup Thunder Cross Joins The Arcade Archives This Week

impurekind

Why do you guys almost never show video footage for stuff like this and reviews and so on? Do you have some limit on storage capacity for the site or something, maybe a policy to use as little storage space as possible? If so, I can understand, but as a user, it would be nice to see actual gameplay footage when you do reviews or articles like this.
