If you enjoy retro side-scrolling beat 'em ups, this week's Arcade Archives release by Hamster might be of interest.
Konami originally launched Crime Fighters in arcades in 1989 and it arrived in the same year as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. Your job is to go undercover as a police officer and rescue hostages from a gang, as you take down every last baddie. Here's the official description:
"Infiltrate the base of a dark crime gang, with the goal of rescuing a group of beautiful women who have been kidnapped. Take down baddie after baddie with various fighting moves and weapons."
As usual, this will set you back $7.99 / €6.99 / £6.29 (or your regional equivalent). Check out the screenshots and video below:

If old games could have bad ratings
Can we get NARC?
This game is bad alright. Bad as hell. I’ll pretend I’m the magnum packing 80’s conservative cop, Sledgehammer. Gonna tell crime to shut up on these blood streets. Gonna have to ask you to trust me. I know what I’m doing...
Beat-em-ups are a genre that I seem to get bored with pretty quickly these days, like they just haven't aged that well, but back in this era Konami was really making some of their best stuff.
Damn I remember playing this in arcades as a wee lad
why this game, looks ugly, you have so many other options Konami!
I would love a Konami beat-em-ups compilation with TMNT, Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare, e.t.c.
I’ve been playing the crap out of SOR4 this week. Diving further into the difficulty modes, arcade mode and so forth. I don’t believe another beat em up out there stands a chance.
I just want to say that this hasn’t aged well BUT it the prequel to probably the GREATEST BEAT ‘EM UP of all time (should be in any fan’s of the genre top5) which is
CRIME FIGHTERS 2 aka best known as:
VENDETTA.
Flag gates are open, only a question of time ‘till that one is released. Also, PSA reminder that y’all should get ACA SUNSET RIDERS while you’re at it... Konami were gods in the ‘90s
I'm interested in this game, but I only read bad opinions about it. Then again, I also read bad opinions about Renegade when it came out in Arcade Archives and ended up buying it and loving it anyway.
So, those of you who actually know it would consider it worse than Renegade?
Vendetta (Crime Fighters 2) is the version y'all want....this one is only fun for a few minutes and then....ehhhhhh. Hit detection is GARBAGE. But the game is funny, at least.
@Moroboshi876 If you loved Renegade, you'll enjoy this too. It plays fine and sounds meaty enough. It feels like The Main Event (which I'm hoping comes to Switch lol).
Used to pump so many quarters into this back in the day. When we wished that one day we’d have a home console that could play games that looked as good as arcade games.
Lol. Go undercover. Proceeds to beat up the first person he sees.
@Noid
All of the titles you mentioned are licensed though, and from different license holders. A compilation release of all of those would be a logistic nightmare.
@Moroboshi876
It's similar in some ways - showing its age but still solid enough. If you liked Renegade, you'll get your moeny's worth from this for sure.
@DashKappei
Amen my friend. This is up there with Capcom's best belt-scrollers for me. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.
Actually looks pretty cool, and I can imagine a modern remake really going to town.
Bring back Violent Storm, Konami!
I remember this being a very popular arcade game when I was a young.
Konamis Double Dragon...classic
Hmm, these old beat em ups can be hit or miss. I like the gritty detailed backgrounds, but the character sprites seem oddly small. I might pick it up.
@Moroboshi876
I loved Crime Fighters in the arcade, and even beat it. Now I have the game on my NES Classic Edition, and I still think it's great. It's a beat'-em-up that distinguishes itself from the crowd. The genre has repetitive gameplay, so it's good that this game adds humor and whacky characters, in addition to having gameplay that feels different from any other game in the genre. And by the way, you should check out the Sega Master System version of Renegade!
@FroZtedFlakerZz What? This game is awesome.
@SeveredLegs Hit detection isn't bad. Also, this game is great.
@Moroboshi876 No. I love this game. Both are great. Don't listen to negativity.
@JAPBOO It doesn't look ugly. Doesn't even sound like you've ever played it before. Don't judge before you play it.
@VR32X Umm this game isn't bad. It's actually pretty great.
@adamman12345 Thanks! In fact, I didn't like Double Dragon as much as Renegade. Once you realize you have to elbow your way through the end, it becomes too easy. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I liked Renegade much more.
A guilty pleasure I will buy purely for arcade nostalgia. I love seeing these lost old arcade games resurrected on Switch!
Although I think I'll probably play it 5-10 times and wonder why I ever pumped so many quarters into it as a kid...
@Moroboshi876 Honestly, same. But I still like both.
@adamman12345 I must be getting old. Even urban dictionary can’t help me. Bad as hell means something is awesome. Lol!
@adamman12345 you are right. Never player before. It looks ugly to me. But more than that is that Konami has better options.. not sure if this is really a classic game or what but consider a few other pics to be better alternatives for them to please fans and get more revenue
Dear Hamster,
Now please bring us Vendetta, Violent Storm, and Irem's Undercover Cops while you're at it. Thank you.
@DashKappei you know what, I always liked cowboys of moo Mesa over sunset riders lol. It was just redone a lot better. But I appreciate both
SO! Its sledgehammer time! Theres 4 different versions on this bad boy. Which one is the best?
Another really average release, how about Konami's incredible Metamorphic Force or Violent Storm.
Graphics look fine for 1989. Final Fight looks a lot better though.
@robr agree, sor4 is the best beat’em up of all time. I hope the same group of people make the next golden axe. I am still waiting for sor4 dlc.
@Noid ya just release the beat em up collection already.
