Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 14th November, revealing that Shin Megami Tensei V has gone straight in at number one at launch.

Not surprised by the sales.
Has an Xbox console ever sold just under 50% of the current Sony console? Very weird to see in Japan!
Looks like Japanese gamers don't like both PS5 & XBOX machines.
It’s a fun game. I’m actually really enjoying it myself so far. Thanks Altus.
SMT V is a wonderful game, well deserved, and that's not including digital sales either.
What's with PS5? Less than 5000 units is embarrasing...by comparison Switch sold almost 90000.
It’s interesting that people still buy the regular switch, even if the oled model it’s better.
@clianvXAi The oled model is also more costly too, plus supply is still likely on the lower end too. If people bought SMTV, and didn’t have a Switch, to play this new game they probably gunned for what was available. Basically, there’s multiple factors at play.
Loving SMTV so far, totally new to the series. The music is unbelievably awesome, and the demon collecting and combat is too notch. Very impressive Switch game!!
@meeto_1
No, this may be a first.
Though it should be noted that last week was by far the worst week of PS5 hardware sales ever in Japan, so that explains why it happened.
SMTV Is a real masterpiece!
I feel like the OLED switch will eventually outsell the PS5 at this rate. Look at those all time numbers in just a couple months 👀
@Anti-Matter yes, because Japanese people loved playing videogames...
Been enjoying SMT5 as well myself; an absolute blast to play even if I continuously get slaughtered by random demons that catch me off-guard.
Surprised to see Switch sales double that of the OLED.
I would have grabbed SMT V if the steelbook edition was available in the EU but it's not so I'll either grab the game on switch on a sale or wait till it releases on ps4/pc and grab it for my ps4 since it will run better and has trophies.
@Anti-Matter XBox Series Consoles are are doing much better than Xbox One did in Japan - I'm sure I read somewhere that they are likely to out-sell XB One lifetime sales by the end of this year. Likely still stock issues with PS consoles in the region too which would explain the lower than expected numbers.
Supply of the Switch OLED model continues to be very underwhelming. This week marks the launch of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, so a big shipment of OLED models should happen, but I'm personally not too optimistic anymore.
SMTV had the 3rd biggest retail launch in the franchise. Adding in digital sales should comfortably put it's launch above that of the original SMTIII and fairly even with the launch of SMTIV.
I gotta say, it it one of the most graphically impressive games I have sedn on the Switch so far and that's on top of the usual goodness of soundtrack and gameplay.
SMTV is awesome and that's a fact.
This comes as no surprise. inb4 SMT5 best selling game in the franchise.
Expected, but nice to read about nonetheless. SMT V has been selling very healthily worldwide so far. I'm sure Atlus is happy with how it's performing.
@westman98 I also don't know how well they'll be able to stock OLED for the BDSP launch. Not optimistic, myself.
I have a Switch OLED on various wish lists with retailers here in the UK. Got an email from one this morning that said, and I quote, ‘won’t be coming back in stock.’
I was expecting more from Shin Megami Tensei 5 launch in Japan
@IronMan30
Black Friday is also approaching, so I could see Nintendo screwing over Japanese consumers by shipping whatever supply of the OLED model they have to western markets since Japan doesn't really celebrate Black Friday.
Looks like PlayStation 5 is hammering the market
This is expected from SMT, one of the best JRPGs of this generation, to be the best selling game in a region that mainly buys JRPGs.
On hardware:
You can clearly see Sony's focus shift away from Japan, to be fair that was understandable on Sony's part. Especially after the Wii and DS, Sony became a very distant second with their bulky ass PS3.
I mean in Japan the Wii U was actually beating the PS4 some weeks, so i totally understand why Sony shifted focus outside of their home territory, Sony are better off putting their resources in territories that do support them.
The surprising part here is Xbox and how well they are doing. Seems Microsoft could surpass Sony in Japan eventually.
Glad to see SMTV doing well, let's hope it becomes the best selling game in the franchise, as usual. It's an awesome game, and deserves the best!
Pokemon remakes retail launch / total lifetime sales in Japan:
> [GBA] Fire Red/Leaf Green: ~960,000 / 3.18 million
> [NDS] Heart Gold/Soul Silver: ~1.41 million / 3.97 million
> [3DS] Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire: ~1.53 million / 3.46 million
> [NSW] Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee: ~660,000 / 2.15 million
> [NSW] Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl: ???
Sword/Shield sold ~1.36 million retail copies at launch - adding in digital sales brings that launch sales number up to 2 million copies. Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl will not sell that much at launch.
With that said, it's launch sales should comfortably exceed that of Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. I'm expecting ~1 million retail copies sold at launch.
@Anti-Matter more likely Japanese gamers can't buy the consoles. No point in sending your consoles to a market where the home console market has been in decline for years, ever since the ps2 really.
@Zanzox I'm sure if they could get a hold of the consoles they would also be enjoying the amazing games that have come out on both systems this year. I've put 100s of hours into games on both my ps5 and series x this last year. Been a great year for gaming on all 3 systems.
Very much deserved for Atlus. Let's hope SMTV will be the Persona 5 of SMT, i.e. the game that brings the series into the mainstream. Or, well, closer to the mainstream, at least, because SMT is not as 'friendly' as Persona given its tone and difficulty.
To those people who bought a Switch at launch just for SMTV: it was worth the wait.
I have a suspicion that SMT5 might have some legs for the remainder of the holiday season. I wonder what it sold in America. It's sold out everywhere I have been.
Animal Crossing is closing in on seven million physical in Japan… wowzers.
@Gamer_Zeus I think your right, Sony have shifted their priorities away from Japan and are not suppling the country with stock. The home console market has been in decline for years there, handheld is king. Disagree that MS will ever over take Sony in hardware sales though, over a million gap already and one of the big chains has stopped selling xbox.
But I don't think that's their strategy anyway, MS want people signed up to gamepass, and with X Cloud getting better all the time, that could be a massive hit in Japan.
@Rubashov That is what happens when OLED is literally on lottery status
@dmcc0 no, the ps5 just has no great games, they have nothing for the holidays. Stop making excuses, Nintendo has pokemon, Mario party, and metroid, x box has forza and halo. Sony has nothing. It is been over a year, stock shortages and scalper, are just EXCUSES, and the excuses cannot last forever, the Switch won the 9th gen war, it is over. 2nd place is up for grabs and I hope x box wins. Sony has been too arrogant for too long, this ps5 has no great games, not eternal, not demon Souls. And not Rachet and clunk. All are just mediocre games at best. Sony has nothing it is just a 500 dollar door stop, God of War, and Horizon and just about all their other big titles for the next few years are coming to pc, so if you want the best looking version of one of their games , then 1st party get pc, the better version, and for 3rd party games, get x box series x for the better version. Or get a switch for the best first party exclusives that beat out all the systems including pc, there really is no good reason to get a ps5, it is not that good of a system. Sony failed this generation. They needed to delay the ps5 by a year. But Sony rushed it out, the controllers drift and break, the system over heats. And the most important thing, great games sell a system , not 4k graphics, just ask the Switch. They have all most 100 million systems, and Show no signs of slowing down.
And regardless what some PEOPLE SAY. The switch IS NOT A PORTABLE. it is a HYBRID, a HOME CONSOLE YOU Can Take on the go. THE SWITCH LITE, THE SWITCH L.I.T.E.!!!! is the hand held not the regular switch. So yeah, Sony needs to get their act together, start making great games fix the ps5's issues or just get out of the video game business period and stop charging 70 bucks for the exact same game you can get on the ps4 , with a minor graphical upgrade , for 10 dollars cheaper, sorry Sony, Nintendo does what you don't, make a great quality home system you can take on the go, with great quality games.
Nice that the Switch families is crushing every platform up there. The strange part is that the digital only Xbox Series S sell better than the physical more powerful Xbox Series X whereas the PlayStation 5 is the opposite as the base physical model sell better than the ripoff digital edition. You know Sony screw up when their PS5 sell worst than an Xbox system on the chart. With PS5 games getting the PC porting treatment and the difficulty of finding a PS5, it's no wonder many are not buying the digital edition in drove anymore. Why buy it when they could later get it on Steam anyways?

SMT V is really fun and it's refreshing to actually get a challenge and see the Game Over screen in a turn-based rpg.
I hope SMT V turns out to be the best selling game in the series.
Though it shouldn't be hard.
@mariopartyfan68 wow you really don't like Sony eh 🤣🤣. Couldn't disagree with you more though. The ps5 has some brilliant games and it's selling extremely well. Latest reports say it's outselling both series consoles 2 to 1. It's selling nearly on par with the switches first year, and that's during a pandemic and a massive chip shortage. The 9th gen has a long way to go.
And if you think games like returnal, R&C, deathloop, kena Bridge of spirits, demon souls, Spiderman MM, sackboy, operation tango(great coop game) are not great then 🤷. And again that's during a pandemic, we'd have Horizon forbidden west and GT7 this Christmas if we weren't going through that. But straight into the new year we have Horizon, GT7, Sifu, Forspoken, Stray, ghost wire tokyo and little devil inside. Plus all the brilliant 3rd party games coming like Elden Ring.
I must be lucky with my dual sense controllers, I have 4 and they work great. No problems after 100s of hours. They are also the best controllers I've ever used, add loads of immersion and are greatly supported. Much more than HD rumble ever was. But maybe your right, after the best 2 financial quarters in the history of PlayStation, with the fastest selling console in their history they should just stop ✋!
Plus I don't think you appreciate what a massive jump the ps5 is over the ps4.
Personally I think it's an amazing time in gaming. I love my series x and gamepass, especially now they have launched Forza H5 and halo multiplayer, such a great value. The PS5 is delivering a great experience with more coming soon, and the switch is still powering along with another great year ahead. I'm very lucky I get to experience all 3 and what they have to offer.
@westman98 They aren't going to be discounting the OLED, man. Surely.
2ds still at 7 and beating the new boys. Love it.
@Rubashov,
I think the OLED is being impacted by the component shortage far more than the regular model, which stands to reason as the original has a far ore established component supply chain by now.
@AmplifyMJ I got lucky a few weeks ago on the Argos website. Ended up driving a while to pick one up from an Argos miles away, and I suspect it was a return (but in perfect condition). So may be worth keeping an eye on their website, with a wide radius for collection.
@mariopartyfan68 Um the Switch is kinda in its own Gen like Nintendo systems usually are. This Gen has only been a year as well for PS5 and Series and well the PS5 is selling more then Xbox and is the in demand console outside of Japan.
No great games? Um R&C, Returnal, Kena, Deathloop, Demons Souls and Spider-Man MM. Sony having nothing for this holiday is nothing new either as Sony rarely focus on this holiday, they don't need games around Xmas time to sell their consoles and never have.
@MischiefMaker thank you
@GrailUK
The OLED model simply being available to for anyone to buy is enough of a deal.
@mariopartyfan68

This is one of PS5 game i have to get it.
And soon my Ratchet & Clank games collection will be complete. 🤗
Oh, btw...
I play both Nintendo and PlayStation games.
@Anti-Matter I am glad you like it. It didn't do anything for me.
@WallyWest R&C aren't great, neither is Returnal, (which is a buggy mess), Deathloop was OK, Demon Souls sucked.
This is why Sony can do anything. People will make excuses for Sony. I wish people would hold then accountable the way they hold Nintendo accountable.
@Serialsid No, I don't like Sony. They are being hit with Class Action Lawsuit for horrible racism and sexual misconduct allegations. They are like EA and Activision.
@dmcc0 Not salty. I just don't like that company and how gamers let them get away with anything.
@mariopartyfan68 Troll/fanboy much haha. Its hard to take anyone seriously what says Demons Souls sucked.
@mariopartyfan68 its hard to take anyone seriously when they say things like you do about Sony's games. I would put money on if they were Nintendo games you would be saying they are the bestest things EVER!
Demon souls, a 92 on metacritic sucked? 🤣🤣🤣. R&C is a great fun game that looks and plays amazing. The switch would struggle to run a screen shot from it! Deathloop is a lot more than just OK. And well Returnal is my GOTY, just an amazing experience. And like I've said before, In 32 hours I've encountered 1 bug 🤔. I must be lucky eh! Oh and let's not forget Kena, sackboy(brilliant coop game), bugsnax, spiderman MM and all the great 3rd party games we've had this year. Strongest launch year of any console.
@mariopartyfan68 you should go on Sony's forums, the fans don't let them get away with anything. Constant moaning about some of the things they do. As it should be. I'm no fan of the company, just love their games and hardware.
Same as I'm no fan of Nintendo, more so this last few years. They've become just another greedy company who takes their fans for granted. Charge full price for lazy ports and also has the audacity to charge for a god awful online experience(I'm not including the games here). An online experience that was better on the xbox 360 and had more features.
@Serialsid I am talking about the video game media.
@Serialsid Not now. The new online works well. Also, lazy ports? 🤣🤣 Play some, then tell me.
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
@mariopartyfan68 I think you'll find the gaming media is heavily favoured towards MS these days.
Removed - disrespecting others
@mariopartyfan68 Nah you're just a troll/fanboy whose clearly on the verge of getting banned going by your childish tantrum recently.
@WallyWest God, I hope so. Either the guy is a kid and is too young to deal with different opinions or has the mental capacity of a kid. Leaning towards the latter.
