Good review, mine is due to arrive tomorrow. RetroUSB is also due to release wireless controllers for the AVS (or anything else that accepts the NES controller port) in the future.
@RadioShadow >It's funny because in the orginal Mega Drive games (well Sonic 1 -3), the main villian's name isn't even mentioned once. Only in the manuals.
That's one of the reasons that I liking collecting the manuals for older titles. In addition to the artwork and gameplay controls, they often had story information that simply wasn't present anywhere else.
Now of course nowadays we do have the Internet for that, but I feel they're a lot less complete without them, more so than modern games.
@DiscoGentleman Yeah, they only existed because SRAM was too expensive, it wasn't really a design choice otherwise. And with the complexity of games nowadays, just how long of a password are we talking? lol
@3MonthBeef I believe you, but this isn't a software emulator box, it runs an FPGA as I said earlier.
@Kirk He wanted it to look somewhat similar to the original NES by design, it's not an accident. He's also planning a portable version of this using the same FPGA design.
@Gaijillionaire Yup, I've spent too many years dealing with the poorly designed toaster model, so the new non-bending design will be a godsend. That and the fact that it's perfect digital output are the main reasons I'm looking forward to it.
@Shugo I have been too, I'm really excited to get one.
@retro_player_22 It works with all NES and Famicom games perfectly, even new homebrew that has yet to be developred, as well as any NES hardware or accessories that would work with an original console. It actually does work with the zapper, it's just that the zapper doesn't work with flat panel displays, they require CRT by design.
@NESguy94 It's all digital, they aren't converting an analog signal to digital. It's a FPGA (as opposed to a software emulator that's run on an ARM CPU or something). But besides, development has long been finished and manufacturing is nearly complete.
@WireWare It's an interesting time we live in for sure. Just wait until live videos can be cheaply and reliably 'photoshopped'. I'm actually more concerned what will happen from a legal perspective, right now good video evidence is considered to be pretty solid, but what happens when that's no longer the case?
@ThomasBW84 I remember saving my allowance to buy a DC wall adapter for my original GB and GBC, so I could play indefinitely without having to keep buying batteries. That was thanks to Pokemon Red/Gold of course lol, all those hundreds of hours meant way too many batteries otherwise.
@NodesforNoids Yeah I didn't get the first GBA originally myself, only got the SP at first. Both those features were a huge deal, coming from my GBC. Up until then I relied on those worm light things that plugged into the transfer port. The SP really set the stage for the DS family.
@Trinexx My SP's left shoulder button is acting up too actually. Gotta find my tri-wing screwdriver and check it out, might just be dirty or something.
@Socar Not to nitpick (well actually yeah =P) but Fire Emblem started back on the NES, or Famicom specifically. The GBA is just the first time that the West saw a release.
@luigifan624 Yeah it's funny how they can be so dominant with the home console, but flub with nigh everything else, even when the hardware itself is good.
It still surprises me that Demon's Crest did so poorly. I can understand the lack of advertising and all, but getting so many refunds? It played a lot like Mega Man or Castlevania, so I'm not sure what made people lose interest.
I must say again, I'm so glad that they'll have the mirrored (Wii) version of the world available in the form of Hero Mode. I was worried that I'd feel turned around the whole time, as that was the only version I've played all these years.
@ASonic3582 Yeah more niche ones like Phoenix Wright I can see. The Atlus thing is just Europe getting dicked over as usual, I wasn't thinking of that though since I live in the US. In any case I'd consider DQ a higher profile release from a major developer and publisher.
I'm still shocked that we're actually getting this, it was released in Japan almost 3 years ago with nary a word about localization until just recently.
@Sabrewing Yeah, I remember capping on money very frequently even when doing the donation quests as early as possible. It's like that in most games though, not much to spend money on.
@Zelda_Rocks No problem. I made a minor error actually, the triwing screwdriver is for some of the newer hardware (like Wii and I think Gamecube/DS). What you'll want is a 'gamebit' driver, of which there are two sizes. For SNES I think you need 4.5mm, but it's good to have the 3.8mm as well for Gameboy cartridges.
@JohnBlackstar That was the first thing I thought of too. And I don't think consumer UPS were readily available 20 years ago, so it's surprising there were no power interruptions at all during that time.
@World I guess, but I mean being able to open the cartridges is a pretty basic skill of any long time user. Even for those without batteries, you still need to be able to do this in order to easily clean the contacts which can get dirty over the years. It's also useful for verifying if you've got a legit board and not a repro.
"Collectors of retro games will know this fact all too well; many RPGs from the '80s and '90s are now practically unplayable as it's impossible to save your game (unless you're willing to crack open the cart and replace the battery, of course)."
You make it sound like it's difficult lol
Just buy a triwing tool for a few bucks and a watch battery, usually 2025 or something of the sort. I don't even think SNES games had them soldered in, but even so you can just tape it down, as long as it's making a solid contact it's fine. It's a simple thing to do, and any collector of old games will have to do that at some point if they actually want to play them.
@gcunit I would assume not since the virtual Wii is it's own segregated system as far as I can tell. You can't see it's save files from the Wii U storage right?
I actually beat this once as a kid, doubt I could do it now without pulling my hair out lol. I had fun with it, though admittedly it's not exactly the best that the NES has to offer.
@TheDavyStar It's been a while now so my details may be off, but wasn't he specifically told to knock it off? Some of what he was revealing just wasn't professional too, especially not for a person in his position.
A lot of these disputes are ridiculous, but I think they're right on this one. The logo, while not identical, is too similar with nearly the same name as well. I'd wager the average person would confuse the two, they're not going to remember which way the boat is facing or anything like that.
@rockerztonight1 Only if you enjoyed playing Four Swords solo, as it's the same style game. Bare minimum story where you're supposed to co-operate with others to solve puzzle rooms. It's not terrible, but it's not an adventure like your typical Zelda title.
@LordofMentos The name change doesn't make any damn sense in the first place, they purposely use an English word, so we decide to use a made up word instead? I'm getting the game either way, but I hope to God the script isn't butchered too badly.
@rjejr Ah sorry. Yeah I'm not too into the USB thing, the card is nice but not worth that much to me, but I do like artbooks and have paid a lot more than 30 for some. So in your case no it's probably not worth it, but it is for me.
@PanurgeJr Yeah even conservatively speaking it's good value, as videogames generally are. People are weird about paying more than a particular amount (in this case the standard $60 MSRP), but nowadays games have gotten cheaper and the play lengths are longer.
Not that I like paying more money than I have to, but honestly I think some games sell for too little, considering what it costs to make them in recent years and how much you can get out of them.
@OddworldCrash What's great is that it's easy to pick up and play a few games, it's not something that you have to get really invested in to enjoy. I usually only try to play one game at a time so I don't split my attention between too many things, but these kinds of games are an exception.
@Tempestryke You're right there were a few like that, I think for the most part though it was fairly mild though. I just don't remember having to repeat most levels because I missed something, even during my very first playthrough. I think the worst offenders would be the extra levels, however they're supposed to be more challenging than normal. You're right some games do get absurd though, and I just say screw it lol.

@nacho_chicken The video I linked was only playing with the expansion audio as a demonstration, it can do the full audio.
Re: retroUSB's HDMI NES, the AVS, is Heading for a Summer Release
@3MonthBeef What makes you say that? As far as I've read the audio is perfect, it even supports famicom expansion audio.

Re: Nintendo Announces 'Fortissimo' Special Edition of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
For once I actually don't mind that it includes DLC, because it won't be exclusive to the LE.
Re: The Mega Man TV Show is Still Set for a 2017 release
@iamDTS Was just thinking that too. I only hope that any resulting game is good, and not simply a TV/Movie tie-in sort of a game.
I really don't even mind if they deviate a bit from the classic platforming, there's plenty of ways to make it good.

I mean there's another guy saying he's only 14, I have no idea if you were alive then and/or are aware of the series' history.
