@Apollocreed No need to get your knickers in a twist - I agree with your points, Nintendo needs to sort it out. I was just saying that if it's come to the point of selling your Switch, there is another easy option that would enable you to keep the console & have access to future games.
Thank god - retro! We won't see this until at least 2022 but at least it'll. e good. I hope they take all the time they need - I'll be happy with 2023 if it's up to MP1 standards. Now please give us the trilogy in 1080p at 60fps with upgraded visuals.
A lot of people seem to rank the PS1 game over the MK64 - I can't help thinking that must be due to the single player adventure addition. I'd be interested if anyone can shed light in wherever the core racing mechanics are better than MK64?
The most pivotal aspect is high quality software on par with the current consoles. So considering Xiaomi's long pedigree of AAA first party titles and wide range of supporting third party developers, this will definitely destroy the Switch.
I have GCvideo - it's a wonderful piece of kit & produces an amazing image. I still prefer a good prog scan CRT because the CRT is 'kinder' to the image, resulting in a smoother image with less pixelation without loss in clarity.
@impurekind Thank god - finally someone who really appreciates and understands retro gaming visuals. No matter how people try to replicate the N64 look they always fall short. On a PAL CRT, the N64 image is beautiful, unique and apparently impossible to emulate.
@Moroboshi876 The reason that you don't see scanlines is because you had a PAL CRT. A hugely superior image to the NTSC equivalent. The scanlines are minimal and colours are clean and much more accurate. I wish PAL had been the primary platform and we didn't get all those terrible NTSC conversions..
@steventonysmith Same - I hate piracy, especially for Nintendo stuff. I have physical copies of every game I've loved back to the SNES - I just can't get satisfaction out of pirated games; having and putting in the cart/disk is a big part of the experience for me.
@GrailUK I definitely agree with some of your points, but some of us want to see a plethora of Nintendo first party stuff. I also agree with you that there's such a high value to these games it would mean that a Netflix style services wouldn't serve them well. I just wish they would just let us buy the games we love & we could keep them forever - I hate the idea of non ownership when it comes to games.
@cleveland124 @cleveland124 Good one Having read Eurogamer's article on Twilight princess on the shield, it seems that all the games including Mario Galaxy have their 2D elements in the original 480p resolution even though the rest of the game is in high res. I really hope that's not the case with Switch releases as it looks really disjointed. I found using the old N64 240p 2D elements in the uprezzed Wii VC N64 games ruined the look somewhat for me.
I just can't get into the idea of not forever owning all my games so if the games are temporary (i.e. only available with an active subscription), I'd rather just have them on original hardware.
If you don't like the new mechanics (I adore them), and you're not interested in the single player modes, remember that the core tennis 'simple mode' mechanics are still top notch, just as good as the N64 version.
Everyone seems to consider the N64 version the best - so imagine being able to play that with friends online. If you have a good online friend group that enjoys this, this game could be a 9 to you, and become a perennial staple in your arsenal to the level of MK8.
@Iacobus I think this is the answer guys. It seems wierd at first but as a parent I wouldn't want a child below a certain age to be subjected to trash talk, which could be terribly damaging if directed towards a young mind. Parental controls are good but may be inadvertantly overlooked. Nintendo are very family focussed and want to avoid this kind of psychological damage as much as possible.
I wasn't much taken with it - the design looked quite generic to me and it seems like the starfox elements are just an added bonus to what looks to be an average game I wouldn't want to play. I may well be wrong of course. The real question for me is the rumoured starfox racer from Retro - that's something I can get on board with!
There's a big problem that I believe is being overlooked here. The Switch's motion pointer is not as capable as the Wii's. This is because the pointer is only relative and not absolute, which means it slowly drifts over time and would need regular re-centering in a game like Mario Galaxy. It's fine with short term use like in Splatoon, Zelda etc. But for the Galaxy games you need an active accurate pointer consistently across the whole game. It may mean that the eventual Switch version ends up being the inferior version control-wise.
@10-zx I have an even more obsessive setup for my PAL & NTSC Gamecubes - RGB, official component on a NEC XV29+, HDMI mod etc. Absolutely love that console too
@liveswired Nice one I've tried NO AA but didn't like it. It's funny, but I own every mod out there (I'm a somewhat obsessive N64 fan), but I still prefer the original RGB output on a good. low use consumer CRT. It's just a personal thing I guess. I have RGB modded PAL & N64s hooked up to a Sony BVM, a Loewe high end CRT and a consumer Trinition, both consoles with the new (Borti) RGB deblur mods & also the UltraHDMI & the NTSC funtastic with the 'superior' s-video - but as long as the consumer CRT has low hours (say under 1000), I can see why Nintendo went with that graphical output style. Any further softening from a more well used tube just takes that blur one step too far. The N64 looks weird (to me) on a professional CRT like the BVM, looks awful directly connected directly to an HDTV and even the UltraHDMI can't quite match the consumer Trinitron. Horses for courses I suppose - any which way is valid to enjoy this wonderful console.
I would agree that motion controls sucked for a large majority of Wii games but the Mario Galaxy games were among the rare exceptions.
This tablet solution won't be nearly as intuitive or fun as the Wii controls unfortunately. The pointer system for collecting stars was so natural and perfectly integrated that you could do it without even thinking or inhibiting the other controls.
A switch port won't be able to replicate pointer controls either as it's motion control, as good as it it, is only a relative (gyroscope) pointer, so will lose accuracy over a time.
So for the future, the only way you will ever be able to play the Galaxy games in high res with perfect intuitive controls will be on Dolphin. Such a shame as I'd love an updated version on Switch if it weren't for this problem.
It's true that Damo has a tendency to come across as rather arrogant in the comments and perhaps could deal with his interactions here more professionally - but in this case he's absolutely right. It takes a lot of skill and experience to produce videos of this quality.
I have to say that I think Alex's videos and their presentation are fantastic. I've been watching them for a while and they never get old - well done Alex!
A lot of us were running RGB modded (with an amp) N64's back in the day when the console was first out - myself with a Sony Trinitron. I have collected some of the finest and most rare & coveted CRTs ever made (including the Sony BVM 20E1E, NEC XV29+, Loewe E3001 chassis among others), own the UltraHDMI, and the modern RGB mod with deblur as well as a 'funtastic' console with the superior s-video mentioned by Bluedogrulez.
After all that as well as investigating the now well known antialiasing hack, I can say that for me, the absolute best image from the N64 is achieved exactly as we did it back in the day - an RGB modded console with a THS-7314 or similar amp chip with no deblur enabled connected to a standard consumer Sony Trinitron TV. Funny how things come full circle!
@G-Boy No offence taken whatsoever and I also apologise if I caused offence - I appreciate your comments
I think the wider and perhaps a more obvious issue here is that irrespective of what problems this girl does or doesn't have, we have an article about a young lady of just 20 and a comment section where people have been making sexually degrading comments about her - one of which has been applauded by a member of the Nintendo life staff for doing so!
@Darlinfan From my point of view in this case it depends how open minded you are. I think we're never going to agree so perhaps best to leave it there - no hard feelings.
@Darlinfan That's a big assumption you're making there mate. I'm not necessarily saying she's like my daughter or anyone else - I'm merely saying that all may not be as it seems and there might be a more serious underlying issue that would not warrant ridicule.
So to simplify I'm not saying she's one thing or another - but that it might be a good idea not to judge prematurely. That's not too hard to grasp right?
On the other hand your statement is:
"This article is about a silly person doing something silly"
Now you've done exactly that - you've made a judgement on her and assumed she's just 'being silly', based on no actual information. You might be right, you might not be - but you certainly don't have enough information to make that snap judgement do you? This is one of the reasons that there's so much misunderstanding in the world.

@Apollocreed good points but no need to sell your switch over it. Just use Discord on your phone - it works brilliantly with just a pair of earphones.
