@Grot Absolutely right, And re freemelee: People who diss Nintendo for not allowing emulators in competitions don’t understand the nature of the business. Their IPs are the essence of the company - if they allow them to be used in non official ways like this even once, then things will spiral out of control & the IP will eventually be compromised. Peer Schneider put it brilliantly on one of the NVC podcasts.

Re: Feature: What's The Best Way To Play Super Mario Bros. In 2020?

There’s something about using the original hardware, original cart on a CRT that just adds weight to the experience. Just to know it’s running on the original silicone with the controller it was designed for on the display where it looks best with no input lag. Just using the old cartridge gives it a sense of occasion that I’ve never found in any other way of playing. I’ve had collections of hundreds of old roms on emulators back in the day and somehow the experience loses its charm for me, even though you’ve got instant access to all the games at the touch of a button. I just love picking out a game from my piles of original carts & playing them on a CRT as they were meant to be played..

@Wavey84 Nice - we have almost exactly the same journey - Sony CRT to Panasonic plasma (still have mine), CX OLED. You’re so right about motion - & the OLED is great for movies and 60hz or 120hz games but has problems with 30fps games in terms of stutter because of the panel’s response time and sample-and-hold nature nature and of course the lower res in motion. I’d be happy to have a mild motion interpolation to counter the 30fps stuttering if it could be incorporated into game mode with no added lag - impossible I know. I just wish Sony & MS would just commit to a universal 60hz+ option for games but I don’t think it’ll happen. I’d be happy to sacrifice resolution for frame rate in every case & the C9/CX upscales very well. I don’t like BFI because of the dimming, as you say. I have a few decent CRTs - NEC XV29+ (for 480p), a low use 25” and 2 X brand new 21” Sony 4:3 late 90’s consumer trinitrons, a Loewe E3001 chassis shadow mask, new 14” later Sony and a BVM 20E1E pro monitor. hopefully at least some will outlast me with inevitable cap replacements and care. Getting them new took a lot of searching over a few years but it’s my hobby and the image of an unused set is much sharper and more vibrant than a used one. The BNIB 21” and up sets have pretty much run out now, although they do pop up very occasionally.

@TG16_IS_BAE You’re missing something re ocarina. It’s not your fault - it just doesn’t gel with you and that’s fine. There’s something that makes the game much much more than a sum of its parts - there’s a reason this is still held in extremely high regard - and you can’t fathom why. Be at peace with it. There’s lots of games I don’t relate to that I know are amazing, but just don’t suit me - that’s the beauty of life, follow what you love.

@ALinkttPresent exactly! That and the fact that it’s comparatively empty is now seen as a criticism. Yo me that’s not true at all, The field is still as enchanting and engaging as it ever was. It’s lucky to have been able to experience it all at the time- new gamers will never understand

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Super Mario 3D All-Stars

andykara2003

It’s possible the ultimate and most accurate way to play these games may in the long term actually end up being original consoles + CRT. No inaccuracies, latency, control issues or frame pacing problems there. And with original hardware, viewing on CRTs is much nicer to look at than the HDMI mods if you do it right.

Not for everyone, but if you’re a purist and want the gameplay preserved exactly as it was originally intended with decent image quality then this still seems to be the only way to go.

Re: Get A Closer Look At Super Mario 3D All-Stars In This Nintendo Unboxing Video

andykara2003

I’m really looking forward to this & think the price is fine for the games. I don’t mind that the look of the games hasn’t been changed - I think the original feel of them would be altered too much with graphical overhalls.

My only worries are:
A: Mario 64 should have been in 16:9
B: The pointer on the joycons is not absolute, but relative due to it being gyro based as opposed to the Wii’s IR sensor bar. This means that when playing Galaxy on a TV/monitor, you’ll have to keep recentering or adjusting the cursor a la Skyward sword. If this is the case (and I can’t see how it could be any other way), this will actually have an inferior and less intuitive control scheme to the Wii version. It’s great to have cleaner graphics, but not at the sacrifice of gameplay.

I’m surprised no one seems to be talking about this actually.

(Edit: someone mentioned you can also control the cursor with the controller when using the pro controller - this is an even worse situation! Controlling the cursor with an analogue stick is much less fluid and more cumbersome than with a pointer/cursor. It may turn out that for playing on a TV/monitor, Wii might actually remain the definitive way to play the Galaxy games on official hardware)
