For the N64 I’ll always prefer original hardware on a nice high end 20” CRT (BVM) - the 2D bitmaps don’t look out of place and the low poly look blends much more nicely on CRTs. Plus it’s on original hardware so runs 100% perfectly 100% of the time.
Still, not everyone has a CRT & it’s amazing these new options exist.
@nab1 I hope you’re joking - 120fps is juddery as fxxx. I run at 240fps locked on everything. Even on my 2080ti SLI setup I have to run at 640x480 to guarantee no dips.
@glorymade I realise that - but how would the actual visual and gameplay experience differ from an emulator? The 2D bitmaps and textures look to be unchanged..
@PorllM Well put - they have a very different and perfectly valid ethos to the other guys and personally I think their unique approach brings colour to the gaming scene. They want a safe ecosystem as free from the sometimes toxic atmosphere that can prevail on other systems. Good for them for being different.
@ThanosReXXX You must be joking - Mario kart 8/deluxe was a revolution. You can say that some old tracks made a return, but those, the entire handling model, the premise of multiple axes and many more aspects make the game much more than just an evolution. I don’t think Nintendo would be happy with a straightforward evolution of their major series’. In fact revolution, not evolution is their central premise, that’s why we love them.
What a great article. Wave race blue storm would be great - people misunderstand this game, it really has the most fantastic gameplay. You just have to master it to see the depth; unfortunately many people found it too difficult and disregarded it as a result as 'unplayable'.
@mesome713 Naughty stuff? You have an overactive imagination mate. Bitcoin is bitcoin. I don't care if it's google ads - if there's content that's blatantly predatory, then it's the site owner's responsibility to make sure that it's not on their website, no matter where the content is from.
@Paraka read Nestalgia’s comment. This wasn’t just the average gross-out humour, but had an underlying intelligence and wit that transcended that genre. That’s why it’s still held in such high regard and is so beloved. Maybe you have to be British to fully appreciate that - it’s decidedly British humour.
Anyone here comparing this to nickelodeon is a sure sign that they absolutely don’t understand BFD’s humour in the slightest.
@SquareOneMJ Nice! I have a drawer unit under the TV which has one drawer and one open space. I have most of my games and controllers in the drawer & the Switch & Wii U pushed right to the back of the open part. The PS4 is there too, but he doesn’t seem interested in that. Watch out for wires too - especially if they’re carrying mains! They’ll chew everything they can get hold of 😂
From the comments, there’s lots of very young people on here. Of course, that’s absolutely expected and understandable, but I wish there was a filter to block under 18’s. This is absolutely not meant as a slight to anyone here & I love the comment section - but it would be great to somehow know I’m not talking to children..
I prefer more linear games & loved sniper elite 4 so will get this. I love my Switch, bit this is the sort of game I'd want to play on my PS4. 60fps is a big factor - I tend to only play exclusives on the Switch.
I’ve never seen an alternative to the N64 stick that controls as accurately as the original. Even the Hori stick is overly sensitive, making aiming harder and more twitchy in some games. Also the article mentions that this controller is more accurate as it has a larger dead zone. Actually it’s the other way around. The original is best, you just need to get one with a tight stick - or better still, buy one new. The price is great, but Nintendo life has a habit of saying that that new products are better than the original ways to play. They said that the ultraHDMI is better than RGB+CRT for example, which is definitely not the case.
I was mildly tumescent for this, but probably won’t use it much. I love Nintendo’s inventiveness & I’m glad I bought it just to support them. For me, I found the resolution a bit too low to enjoy Mario & Zelda - it feels like playing on an N64 at best.
@Jeronan absolutely agreed - the simpler look of the in-box games look OK, but the more complex nature of BOTW & MO make the games look pretty rough in VR. I’m glad I bought the set, just to support Nintendo but it’s like looking at graphics roughly equivalent to the N64.
Very nice article. One thing I never understood through the years is people saying you’d need 6 new batteries every 3-4 hours. To do that would be crazy - you just bought 6 rechargeables and a cheap charger and never have to spend another penny on batteries. Much cheaper than the Gameboy long term. Saying that I’d still have picked the Gameboy for the games.
@beazlen1 Nice one - I must get back to original & give it another try, in NTSC of course. The overall presentation. and voiceover just have that epic feel 👍
I’m more than mildly tumescent for this - I loved 1080 and the wave race games so I’d buy this in a heartbeat. On a different note, am I the only one who preferred Blue storm to the original wave race?

But N64 emulators have been able to run N64 games at high resolutions for years no? I think I’m missing something here, can someone enlighten me?

@GrailUK I like your thought processes. Not for me, but I expect you're right in that it could be done really well
Re: Soapbox: Switch Really Needs Games Like Excitebike 64, Wave Race, 1080° Snowboarding And, Yes, F-Zero
@GrailUK heresy! Gyro controls for drift would be such a let down

Re: Random: "One-Line Code Fix" Resolves Super Mario 64 Smoke Bug
@FargusPelagius totally agree, I think the original programmer knew exactly what he was doing .
Re: Random: "One-Line Code Fix" Resolves Super Mario 64 Smoke Bug
@BionicDodo Interesting - I think the original looks way better in motion. Horses for courses.
Re: Random: "One-Line Code Fix" Resolves Super Mario 64 Smoke Bug
I actually think it looks better on the left in these images. Maybe the programmer realised the mistake but decided to leave it in as he preferred it.
