Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Super Mario 3D All-Stars

It’s possible the ultimate and most accurate way to play these games may in the long term actually end up being original consoles + CRT. No inaccuracies, latency, control issues or frame pacing problems there. And with original hardware, viewing on CRTs is much nicer to look at than the HDMI mods if you do it right.

Not for everyone, but if you’re a purist and want the gameplay preserved exactly as it was originally intended with decent image quality then this still seems to be the only way to go.

Re: Get A Closer Look At Super Mario 3D All-Stars In This Nintendo Unboxing Video

I’m really looking forward to this & think the price is fine for the games. I don’t mind that the look of the games hasn’t been changed - I think the original feel of them would be altered too much with graphical overhalls.

My only worries are:
A: Mario 64 should have been in 16:9
B: The pointer on the joycons is not absolute, but relative due to it being gyro based as opposed to the Wii’s IR sensor bar. This means that when playing Galaxy on a TV/monitor, you’ll have to keep recentering or adjusting the cursor a la Skyward sword. If this is the case (and I can’t see how it could be any other way), this will actually have an inferior and less intuitive control scheme to the Wii version. It’s great to have cleaner graphics, but not at the sacrifice of gameplay.

I’m surprised no one seems to be talking about this actually.

(Edit: someone mentioned you can also control the cursor with the controller when using the pro controller - this is an even worse situation! Controlling the cursor with an analogue stick is much less fluid and more cumbersome than with a pointer/cursor. It may turn out that for playing on a TV/monitor, Wii might actually remain the definitive way to play the Galaxy games on official hardware)

Re: Legal Crackdown On Mario 64 PC Port Not Enough To Stop Modders From Improving It

Guys - for those who are saying it’s ridiculous for N to always protect their properties like this, I totally understand as on the surface that appears logical and obvious. However Peer from IGN did a brilliant explanation on NVC as to why they have to, and it goes way beyond just being petty and is essential for their future business.

I don’t remember which episode unfortunately, it was a year or two ago - but if anyone can find it, it’s a very succinct and logical explanation.

@retro_player_77 Hmm - actually I haven’t considered this quite as starkly as you’re expressing here, I think you might be right (apart from suggesting the games industry is dying).

It’s a difficult one - I can appreciate the game modding community, but perhaps they should only mod if they have the go ahead from the game’s creator. For example Rockstar actually encourages and supports the modders for their game. But in this case, yes Nintendo doesn’t want their IP being distributed freely like this I can understand that. They were the creators after all and might well bring out their own remake at some point.

And of course hacking for the purposes of the purposes of creating ‘home brew’ is for the most part a joke - 99% of that is for pirating.

Re: Rumours About Pikmin 3 Coming To Nintendo Switch Intensify

@Wexter Unfortunately the Galaxy & metroid games don’t run in HD on Wii U - I wish they did! They look rather rough as it’s just upscaled (and anamorphic) 480p. CRT is the only way to make those games look really nice for now. In fact if they can’t work a new control scheme that lives up to the fantastic Wii controls, Wii+CRT might forever be the ultimate way to play those games if you prefer original hardware to emulation..

@HobbitGamer From your comments I assume that you and @brunojenso are rather young, so your views are in some ways excusable as it takes a certain maturity to fully understand and appreciate empathy for other people and animals. If either of you are out of your early teens, however, get a grip and grow up - animals are not toys for your amusement.

Re: Soapbox: Switch Really Needs Games Like Excitebike 64, Wave Race, 1080° Snowboarding And, Yes, F-Zero

andykara2003

@ThanosReXXX You must be joking - Mario kart 8/deluxe was a revolution. You can say that some old tracks made a return, but those, the entire handling model, the premise of multiple axes and many more aspects make the game much more than just an evolution. I don’t think Nintendo would be happy with a straightforward evolution of their major series’. In fact revolution, not evolution is their central premise, that’s why we love them.
