@Spider-Kev I’m assuming you’re not a follower of retro stuff these days? Component gives a much better signal than s-video, this is universally known on the retro scene. All the hardcore gamers knew that back in the day as well. Component is close to RGB quality.
@Scapetti Love your attitude - you're absolutely right. Everyone (including me) obsesses too much over this stuff sometimes. I expect I could have a great time with Stadia etc.
@Scapetti I get your points other than the latency issue. Having game mode off often goes past the 100ms point so even half that would be too much for most non-casual gamers who prefer low latency. But for casuals such as yourself it's a great solution as you say.
Trouble is when the game is played at high resolutions the polygons become too defined & the game loses it's charm & magic - the qualities that make the game so incredibly special. 480i on consumer CRT (preferably a Trinitron via Gamecube's RGB) is the only way it looks better than the original while retaining the authentic look. This is because the interlacing of the 640x480 image on a low use consumer set mitigates the over-pixellation that would usually occur at 480p - and is mild enough not to be distracting at five feet from a 25" set (optimal CRT size for GC). The result is a very authentic & smooth image. For Pro CRT monitors the interlacing is too distracting - a low-use consumer set is best. 480p and above looks inauthentic for N64 & even the best N64 HDMI mods are dreadful vs CRT. The 3DS version also fails to capture the magic of the original for various reasons.
I think only CRT enthusiasts who were blown away by the original game in the 90's will understand what I'm talking about. the best N64 HDMI mods are dreadful vs CRT.
Used to love edge in the 90s & early 2000’s. The best, most intelligently put together outlet both on & offline. But I think some hubris got in the way & they started giving out ridiculous scores & opinions. Double dash 5/10?? Even if you don’t gel with the game it’s at least an 8.
Personally the Banjo Kazooie soundtrack is my favourite of all time. I woke up my 20 year old autistic daughter with Clanker’s cavern today, she was smiling from ear to ear. And I was too! Might make Nintendo tunes a part of her morning wake up routine.
@Axelay71 Nothing like original hardware & CRT - using original carts just give a sense of occasion to the play session that you just can’t get elsewhere.
@GoshJosh Same, the BOTW physics puzzles were very uninventive, bland and lacked imagination & finesse. As you say, they just followed the old stale formula & it shows in the reviews unfortunately.
@Pigeon Yes, BOTW is notoriously lacking in the gameplay department. That’s why it was panned by most media outlets. Fingers crossed Nintendo will pull their socks up and finally try and understand what good gameplay actually is.
I personally love the western pad as much as the Japanese one. I have both for my Megadrive and they both perform just as well as long as they’re not hammered/overused.
Okami has a cult following & a reputation of being as good as or even better than twilight princess. I took the plunge & played it a few years ago to see what all the fuss is about. A stylish, unique and beautiful game no doubt, but it can’t compare to the majesty of Twilight princess. So much imagination and atmosphere, fantastic dungeons with constant originality - the winner by a country mile.
Prediction - they never do anything to tighten up the in-game or network problems. Latency & emulation get no better with time. Nintendo’s will miss the point entirely & in the long run, their idea of ‘improvement’ will just be adding more games. I really hope they do something meaningful here, but for some reason I can’t imagine they’ll go in and actually fix any code. Prove me wrong Nintendo!
@Spiders @HamatoYoshi They’ll never be 100% right, but as @damo says, they have a higher than average hit rate. That’s what makes them noteworthy among the industry.
This is very likely true. I don’t mind not including 2 &3. 1 was easily the best game - I rather they put their time & effort into doing a great job with that one. Hopefully it’ll be a bit more than a basic 1080p emulation. And if it doesn’t have the Wii style controls it’s pointless - absolute best FPS controls ever implemented on a console, no question.
@Don That might just be my most wanted game ever. By Shigeru and the original gang - with additional special edition N64 cart, playable on an original N64.
Moons are too bitty - we need more significant, less plentiful reward tokens. Don't worry about the portable nature of the console - people can easily put it away half way through a star.
@Carck @Octane_st1m @Clyde_Radcliffe Sorry guys, yes I was being a bit annoying & facetious there. I’ve never enjoyed them much, but I appreciate that people rate them. I’m hoping generations gets remastered as I’d like to give that one a go considering the love it gets.
I’d be very interested to see how the control stick movement map compares to the original controller. I have a feeling it may not be the same control profile.
Why are so many comments being removed here for being unconstructive? I respect the right to mod, but almost half the comments, all from different people?
I’ll always love CRT plus original console best - there’s a use case for every option though. I just feel the n64’s graphics just suit a crt better. Saying that, Wii VC looks nice in 480i (never 480p!) on a consumer trinitron (not pro!)
Yes!! Get them Nintendo. If you're going to provide hacks to the world, make sure they don't allow the play of current gen games! It really is that simple. Otherwise enjoy Nintendo's team of world class lawyers.
This uproar is good. I love Nintendo & we need to make sure the management don’t turn it into a company that fleeces it’s customers. Charging full price for games long after release I can get on board with as they value their IP & that’s their choice. But putting too little effort into their online service, retro stuff & being overly greedy should stop.

Sounds like I'm of the same opinion as everyone else - Navi's absolutely fine, just indicitave of the era.

Re: This Unofficial Zelda PC Port Is About '90% Complete', Say Devs
Ocarina looks best in 480i on Gamecube with 25" consumer CRT - much better than any emulation. Can't argue with that.
Re: Banjo-Kazooie Joins Switch Online's Expansion Pack This Week
@Freek Love it! I do the same, the only 100% authentic experience. To be lost forever at some point unfortunately.

@Freek Ahh but do you play them on CRT?

I skipped this game due to the negativity. Love toadstool tour though - is super rush anywhere near as good? I might be tempted to pick it up.
Re: Modernised 'Panda' GameCube Controller Hits Kickstarter, Instantly Smashes Goal
Are smash players obliged to use standard official controllers for competitions or can they use unofficial ones?

@KK64 Interesting, thanks. In what way are these different to the original controllers, Are the original sticks considered to be superior?
Re: Modernised 'Panda' GameCube Controller Hits Kickstarter, Instantly Smashes Goal
@Matl Fair play - very interesting project. Hopefully they can match the feel of the original stick. No controller I’ve used since has lived up to it.
