Nintendo's "limited-time" Switch release Super Mario 3D All-Stars has received an exciting new update.
This one adds GameCube controller support to Super Mario Sunshine, so you can now play this particular game with the same controls as found in the original game's release. Of course, you'll need to have access to a GameCube Controller Adapter to have access to this mode.
There's also inverted camera support and various other general fixes to improve the entire package. Below are the full patch notes, courtesy of the Nintendo support page:
Ver. 1.1.0 (Released November 16, 2020)
General
- Players can now invert the camera controls within all three individual titles.
- Super Mario Sunshine now supports the Nintendo GameCube controller (sold separately). Players can now play this title using the same controls as found in the original GameCube release.
- The Nintendo GameCube controller for Super Mario Sunshine is supported only in TV mode.
- You’ll need the GameCube Controller Adapter (sold separately) to use this controller with your Nintendo Switch system. Information on connecting this adapter and controller can be found here.
- The Nintendo Switch Lite system does not support this controller option.
- All button displays within Super Mario Sunshine will not reflect the Nintendo GameCube controller.
- Other general fixes have been applied to improve overall gameplay across all three titles.

Nice, the GC controller is my favourite. Nothing can match the sheer precision and sensitivity of the analogue stick. The combination of that stick and the original super monkey ball is gameplay perfection in its purest form.
Why? the new controllers are just fine. It won't make this awful game any better.
Well, better late than never.
@DK-Fan Some of us like having all of FLUDD's functionality on a single button as was intended.
There are a few sections that are unnecessarily difficult because of fighting muscle memory.
It's about time. I knew they would fix it, but I still don't understand why they have to rush everything all the time all of this stuff should have been in there from day one. But nonetheless I'm very glad they fixed it.
Excellent news! I still need clear Mario 64 though 😅 I'm playing them in other.
As the one person who I think Nintendo originally implemented that camera change for (I despised the original release FOR that sole reason), I really don't care. I am interested to know what the 'other general fixes' are, though...
@andykara2003 I have that little purple 8bitdo adapter that works with all the old Wii style plug accessories and the OG cube controller. It works wonderfully with the switch. also I still love to use the old Wii classic controller with the switch, the analog sticks are in the right place LOL!
I 100%'d Sunshine on SM3DAS with my Joy-Cons, but now I kind of want to play it again with my Gamecube controller.
@DK-Fan because now Nintendo will be open to adding support should they port anything else from the GameCube.
Doesn't hurt to have many choices.
I'm amazed. I was really hoping this would be a thing when the game was announced, but I didn't expect them to actually go and do it! Thank you Nintendo!
@DK-Fan
The article and other comments didn't elaborate on this.
The Gamecube controller has pressure-sensitive analogue triggers, and Super Mario Sunshine made use of this.
Pressing the trigger part-way would allow Mario to run whilst spraying water, and pushing it all the way would make Mario stand in place.
Beautiful. Finally Sunshine in it's best form 😎😍
@DK-Fan Everyone was complaining about the lack of both options in the launch. Speak for yourself.
Brilliant, now I can play Sunshine with its proper controller. I just wish I could use the analogue triggers.
My muscle memory for the camera on 64 and SUNSHINE thanks you, Nintendo.
"All button displays within Super Mario Sunshine will not reflect the Nintendo GameCube controller."
Nintendo being lazy again.
Nothing crazy, but nice additions.
Yay yay yay ya woooooohoooooo
@Ventilator The Switch recognises the GameCube controller as a standard USB controller. It wouldn’t be able to tell that there’s a Cube controller attached to display those icons.
Ok sunshine is now legit👌
Wow! I didn't think Nintendo would do this, so this is super cool to see. I've been giving this new update for a spin and the GameCube controls are 100% spot on - even down to the analog L and R buttons! That is awesome.
finally a game that gets GameCube controller support! lol now, what game will be next?
@nessisonett You always could technically use the GameCube controller with Sunshine, because, as you said, ordinarily the Switch recognises it as a standard USB controller. This update however has enabled the game to realise that it is specifically a GC controller (just like in Smash Ultimate), meaning you can now use the analogue triggers, and that the other controls have all been remapped to their corresponding buttons in the game’s original release too.
@EmmatheBest Playing it now, it seems that they’ve eliminated the lag that occurred when opening the map/shine list screen, and have removed the ‘debug cubes’ that were previously present in Bianco Hills’ Secret of the Dirty Lake level.
@nessisonett The system does, but games can add specific support for the controller. Also Smash Bros does this.
@Markiemania95 Ahh, that’s great news, I didn’t see the article mention the analogue trigger support!
@Ventilator
Capcom also did this for its Gamecube support in the Wii version of Resident Evil 4. Really annoying, but atleast the support is there.
The dual button set-up for Fludd felt a bit off to me, so I'm glad I can go back to the original controller for that game ^_^
@NinjaSyao Yeah. How hard can it be to just make a few new tiny 2D textures?
Even lots of PC games nowadays detects Wii U Gamepad, Xbox One, Switch and PS4 Gamepads and changes button gfx.
@nessisonett Yeah, but doesen't Switch recognise the GameCube adapter itself?
@Ventilator As mentioned above, the Switch doesn’t recognise the controller but individual games can. So you do have a point.
Can anyone tell me whether my 8bitdo gamecube adapter will give me analogue triggers? I am at work and can't wait to find out when I get home!
Official gamecube joycon with analogue triggers confirmed! ...I can dream.
@Moistnado I've tested it, and it still works like a Switch Pro controller when connected with the 8bitdo GC Controller adapter. It does work with my Wii U GC adapter like it should.
@sanderev that's a shame. Perhaps Nintendolife could ask 8bitdo whether a firmware update is in the works? It could be an ultra-niche investigative journalism opportunity for someone.
This is excellent news! With this update, the Switch version of Sunshine is now the definitive version. I guess I won't be playing my GameCube copy anymore.
Great news for speedrunners!
I'm a little annoyed tbh as I just completed Mario Sunshine! Would've played the game in a different order if I'd known this was coming. Mind you I only got enough shines to see the ending not all of them so may go back to it with the GameCube controller if the other shines are decent to play.
Nice, I'll have to grab one of my gamecube controllers from my sister during Christmas!
Ow, this is brilliant news!
digs out wavebird
They say only TV mode supports it, but if you have a USB-C to USB adapter, you can use the GC controller adapter in handheld mode, and it will work just fine in handheld too. I just tried it myself. Works great.
I wish this was in the original release, since now our limited-time cartridges will require an update to work properly,, but at least they made it happen at all.
It'd be nice if they can still work on giving Mario 64 a widescreen upgrade. It really stands out against the other two.
So they've reinstated the analogue FLUDD control? That's great! Might have to hunt down the controller now.
Good news regarding the Gamecube controller support - there will be a fair few people that will benefit from that having got the adapter and controller for Smash.
Shame I still can't use an N64 controller with the adapter and/or a USB controller. There's a handful of 64 games on the system now (Mario, Turok, Doom) so it would be a nice feature to add in the future. Perhaps they are still planning a N64 virtual console...
@Danrenfroe2016 true but 2020 man I think literally everything can be excused this year
As nature intended.
God knows that I've tried to play (more than once) Sunshine.... Ok, I'll try again later
Nice. That’s a welcome addition indeed.
Have they added the option to invert spraying water controls? Game is almost unplayable for being fixed normal.
It's incredible they had not included basic options like this from the start.
How DID they reconcile the controls of FLUDD with the JoyCon / Pro Controller anyway?
@Pod One of the shoulder buttons is for standing still and shooting while aiming. The other is for "shooting from the hip" while running. It goes against muscle memory but works well enough. Will be plugging my GameCube controller in tonight though!
@aros2k Yes, they also implemented options for adjusting camera controls, not just when moving but also for Mario’s View and for when using FLUDD when stationary.
@Markiemania95 Excellent! Thank you for the reply buddy.
Should have been there from day one, but better late then never i guess.
Sounds nice... But does it still run at 30 fps??
Finally, Sunshine on Switch is playable!
@DK-Fan well excuuuuuuuse me princess
@driftydrift Very good point. I have to agree with you. This year has been bonkers. Very thankful I'm still working as so many have not been able to.
Honestly, I'm still waiting to see if it's actually limited release for DDL.
Buying the special edition of Smash Ultimate (the one with the game, GC adapter and GC controller) actually turned out to be really useful after all.
I stopped using the GC controller for Smash in like 2015 (prefer Wii U and Switch Pro controllers for Smash Wii U and Ultimate respectively) but bought the special edition of Smash Ultimate as a backup in case my existing GC controllers broke so I could still play GC games.
@Danrenfroe2016 My man
YESSS FINALLY!!
That is how the game should have been from the start!
Now all Nintendo needs to do is fix Mario's higher pitched voice clips and add a widescreen option in SM64, and add back Mii selection on SMG profile creation, and we are GOLDEN!
@Ventilator Re: icons... you'd be surprised. The original game, naturally only playable by GameCube controller, wouldn't have had any existing code paths for dynamically detecting input changes, changing the icons, or reconstituting the UI with them.
Actual controller support in the remake can be achieved surprisingly easily by just fiddling with a self-contained interpretation layer in "Switch space" that takes whatever you're throwing at it and converts it into the GameCube inputs that the original game is expecting, but dynamically switching the icons would probably involve writing and integrating entire new code structures into the game itself, and exhaustively testing the additions to make sure they didn't break anything along the way.
So I guess the Power A GC controller for Switch don't have analog controls?
Does anyone know if an original GC controller would work as intended with a 8BitDo Gbros (their wireless adapter)?
Huh. They should have done this earlier.
Glad I picked up an adapter and controller with Smash 4 back on the Wii U. Nintendo really need to restock these as I'd love a second GameCube controller. Used to have 4 until I was forced to sell my GameCube to raise funds back in uni.
The pro controller is perfect, I do have a GameCube and controllers but don’t think I’ll bother getting the adapter.
HOWEVER the invert options are essential for me, have spent a bit of time on all three games since I purchased at launch, but the lack of invert option just constantly pissed me off. And I haven’t gone back to it since. Hopefully this will allow me to properly get back into the game.
@Fath i understand what you mean and Nintendo should have done this because of "casual players".
In my case it wouldn't matter with lack of correct icons, but non experienced "gamer people" can perhaps be confused.
Is it me or was the sensitivity of spraying much higher on the cube?
This is awesome but I've already done Sunshine 100%. The pro controller was actually quite nice anyway. Will give it a quick go to see what is like but on my next play through will be using the GameCube controller.
Dear @Liam_Doolan
Does this mean that the L and R buttons will be pressure sensitive? (the deeper you press, the more water comes out, just like in the original Sunshine?)
Great news! I'm hoping that Super Mario 64 will play like it does on the Wii VC as I really like playing Super Mario 64 on Gamecube controller.
My Switch says its on 10.2.0 and is up to date, the new one is Ver. 1.1.0? is this right?
Oi I want this game so badly, but just don't want to support Nintendo's bad business practices.
@Pj1 The 10.2.0 is the hardware update (for the switch) and the 1.1.0 is the software update for SM3DAS. So yeah, it's right.
Oh cool now you can feel like you can play the old version.
@Switcheroot I'm using 8bitdo Gbros adaptor and having some trouble. The analogue functionality on the triggers is there but some of the other mappings are wonky, Z is a duplicate of clicking R so doesn't bring up the map.
@EmmatheBest No, I believe they implemented it for me, not you.
