We're not sure about you, but even after yesterday's spicy Bowser's Fury trailer, we were still left wondering just how this new expansion really plays out. How long is it? Is it made of different levels, or just the one open world? The list goes on.
Finally, though, Nintendo has shared some further details on what we can expect in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury's brand new content. Perhaps most interestingly, on a newly-opened website for the game, the company refers to the new content as a "free-roam adventure", proving that the new world is indeed 'open', as opposed to the base game's A-to-B-style level design.
"Mario is sent to Lake Lapcat, where everything is cat-themed—and Bowser has gone berserk! Team up with Bowser Jr. to help his dad chill out in this short but action-packed standalone adventure.
In this free-roaming adventure, you’ll travel to various islands in Lake Lapcat to collect Cat Shines to reignite lighthouses and clear darkened terrain. Watch out for Bowser, though!"
The site also goes into a little more detail on Bowser's terrifying 'full Fury' mode:
"When Bowser is in full Fury, he can be pretty scary. Luckily, Mario can match his might with the Giga Bell, which lets him transform into the mighty Giga Cat Mario and go toe-to-toe with the monstrous Bowser in a titanic battle of biggies."
Elsewhere, it's now been confirmed that Bowser Jr. can be controlled by a second player – as you probably would have guessed by watching yesterday's trailer – with that player aiming to fight off enemies and discover secrets.
amiibo functionality has also been revealed. The new Cat Mario and Cat Peach figures offer up power-ups, the original Bowser amiibo makes Fury Bowser appear (although we'd hope Fury Bowser can also appear without an amiibo) and the Bowser Jr. amiibo unleashes a powerful shockwave to knock out nearby enemies and blocks. Other figures will also be compatible, although their functions haven't yet been revealed.
Excited for this one? Pre-orders are now open!

But what does Cat Mario and Cat Peach do? I think it said power ups before, but is there anything specific?
It feels good to comment again after a long time of not using this account.
Poor people trying out bowser amiibo without knowing what it does
Ultra Instinct Cat Mario
Edit: we have ultra instinct tanooki mario
@MysticGengar They released an overview trailer that shows Cat Mario giving you the White Cat Suit (invincibility plus Cat Suit) and Cat Peach gives you a random power-up.
It's a shame that it will be short. It looks very fun and would have been a good idea for a completely new game. Open-world platformer with a Giant Bowser that could attack at any time, it sounds awesome. I would have bought that game instantly if it was the full game, but I already played 3D World, so I don't think that this short side-thing will make me buy it.
This looks amazing, just wonder how big the area/level is, I may be double dipping for this.
@DjinnFighter How can you tell how long it is?
"Short but action packed"
Probably looking at 4 to 6 hours then, maybe a little more. That's fine with me, although I had hoped it would be a little more meaty like the Splatoon 2 DLC.
@TeamRocket47 Oh okay. Neat. I probably won't get them then, but maybe if I see them on sale of something.
Maybe I'll finally try this game as I skipped the WiiU
Will Godly Chi/Ki Super Cat 2 Blue Toad make a comeback, though?
Short but action-packed .... I wish they just released this as a full blown game. OR.... added some mini games like they did with Luigi’s Mansion. Something with replayability. That said, it sounds better than other ports as far as providing motivation to buy it again.
@sanderev It's literally in the article: "in this short but action-packed standalone adventure".
Why couldn't they bring back the Cat Mario show for this?
you cannot convince me that this didn't start as dlc for odyssey.
Online only with friends is severely outdated, for online modes you really need some kind of matchmaking.
If the new content was a bit meatier I'd probably consider getting the game right away, but I think I'll wait for a sale. Aside from that it does look interesting.
@stinky_t i could be wrong but i believe it still goes on in japan. still wish it would come back to the usa for me tho!
@GASEOUS Ah yes, I noticed that now as well.
@NikHogan It's not Odyssey like gameplay. Maybe it was meant to be 3D World DLC in some form but they couldn't make it work on the Wii U.
Also there is now online multiplayer in the main game as well as local multiplayer (with one or more consoles)
I'm betting it's 45 mins to 2 hours kind-of short.
I don't mind as long as I get kaiju mario and bowser.
@Grumblevolcano I actually think it's fine in this case. It's a game really meant to be played together with friends and playing this co-op with randoms sounds pretty horrible. Probably better off sticking to single player at that point.
It looks cool....but if this were a whole game's worth of content it wouldn't be glued onto a port. Do we have any idea how short this really is?
I just hope the online with friends is good. (insert witty comment about Nintendo's bad online) Otherwise, I'm not much interested in double dipping
Huh so we basically got a spiritual sequel to Sunshine
If the 35th pins set is anything to go by it will have 14 mini tasks to achieve in the one new level.
Equivalent to a £4.99 dlc bolt on.
I may buy this game, but I am actually waiting for Donkey Kong games.
@sanderev im just saying i think it started off as dlc for odysey and was scrapped early on and changed to fit the 3d world style
Okay this does already make things sound more exciting than just yesterday's pre-announced trailer. Hype level up!
@NEStalgia,
It looks good and they did say the lake was huge, what that means though is a mystery, would buy an all new Mario 3D world styled like this though, although a new Mario Odyssey game with even bigger areas like this would be nice too.
Hmmm... to buy or not to buy that is the question. This was one of my favorite recent Mario titles and I immensely enjoyed it on the Wii U. The Bowser’s Fury LOOKS cool but I wonder how much it really adds to those who’ve already played the game. 2 hours of new content? 5?
@NikHogan,
Same here, this feels much more like Odyssey than 3D world.
Honestly not surprising that Fury is going to be >30 minute dlc. Nintendo has really dropped the ball and seem to not be bothering with much of anything lately (the coronavirus must have been a god send to them as they can have a half ass excuse).
Still going to get it , but I'm going obviously going to be bitter about what could have actually been.
This is looking really cool plus online play!
I hate ports of recent games with added content. It's like they want people to skip generations at this point. The game was fun but I still have it. A short addition does not make it worthy of picking it up again. It looks fun, but is it $60 fun? Also, do I have to play through the entire game to unlock it or can you play it from the start? They need to start selling these "extras" separately for people that have already played through the games. Guess I'll watch some annoying streamer play it.
Short could mean anything from less than an hour to pikmin 3 with nintendo
I love 3D world but I may wait and see how much content is in the expansion. I don't want to pay $60 for an hour of gameplay
@OorWullie i think its more like 2h or less
Probably not getting this for over $40 then.
@Grumblevolcano Not that in general your point is wrong, but this dlc seems like the worst possible example to support your claim.
Nintendo makes 3D Mario games I buy them. Simple for me xxx
@sanderev it's 50 Mins without doing the collectables
So as always, the Amiibos are useless garbage.
@Jakiboy You really don't get game development
To be fair this game isnt for the 5m people who bought it, its for the other 70m switch users who never got to play
Here's hoping that they'll add the 3D World levels back into Captain Toad with this game.
@Dringo
Aww, boohoo, a multi billion company with many studios and countless employees can't churn out an actual new game because of these "hard times".
Give me a break, Sony and Microsoft (hell even indie developers) seem to be pressing ahead full steam.
It's a no-brainer for anyone that hasn't played this gem of a game before. The DLC potentially being short shouldn't put you off as the main game is really, really long with loads of secret content.
I'm happy to revisit this one at full price because the game is great and it has so much content.
Bowser's Fury looks interesting, and I like that it's something very new as opposed to simply more levels. The base game is not short of levels already, so I think Nintendo have made a good decision here.
Bowsers Fury has a very experimental feel to it based on the trailer... I'm sure itll be a well polished experience, but I do wonder if it's a stepping stone towards something else in the future?
@johnvboy Yeah, this style would be fantastic as a full game. Very "Mario 64" vibes from this (and some nods to Sunshine as well.) I'm not too enthused so far this time since I really doubt it's sizable enough content to double dip, but we could be surprised ( Bowser's Inside Story's "B-side" was a full game.)
@TheLightSpirit
Yeah, we should all be "grateful" mindless loyal bootlickers like yourself
@DjinnFighter I’m wondering about that - we still don’t know how short though - it says there’ll be several islands so it could maybe be a quite a few hours. Perhaps I’m clutching at straws
@Jakiboy I guess from their perspective 80%+ probably closer to 90% of the Switch install base didn't have the Wii U so these are 'new' to a vast section of their audience.
It's a slap to those of us that loved their Wii U, (give me another damn Mario Kart already or at least new DLC!) but this is a new and exciting experience to millions of people.
But, you said it yourself, you're still going to buy it. I 100%ed this on Wii U and I too am going to buy it. We're enabling this ha.
I will not be buying the next Pokémon, however. I've been fooled too often there.
@TheLightSpirit
Oh, no! What a predicament... 😥
@Archius9
Yeah, I guess us types of people are to blame to be honest.
What's with these amiibo things
Yesterday a few here were upset that a few past Wii u owners were not exactly thrilled on here and were ruining the fun party. Today Nintendo confirmed what many skeptics feared in one word "short". I think I am on board anyway and id much prefer a sequel with this style then a odyssey two. I love Nintendo but it should be ok to not exactly be thrilled at every release and question them from time to time.
@Jakiboy it sucks for Wii U owners, but this will be a really great new experience for millions of Switch Owners. And at least there's few other Wii U games to port over.
I'm not mad about the ports to be fair. My backlog is big enough that I can pass over some of them and wait for ones that I like.
@NEStalgia,
Noticed the Sunshine elements, I think this may have been originally Odyssey DLC, but they decided to bolt it onto the Mario 3D world port instead.
@Archius9
I'm not necessary mad either I'm just getting tired of Nintendo as of late. I'm always getting trapped into the "hype train" when they release a new console only to be met with just Mario, Zelda, and Smash Bros. They surprised me with Animal Crossing but it wasn't much of a step up from New Leaf.
Now with these ports that they are only releasing I'm questioning why I brought a Switch in the first place...
That's it - 2021 is finished. They said it's short...pack it up everyone, we're going home, the ride is over. Pre-order cancelled, Switch is going on ebay, online cancelled, give the TV to charity, move to a cave in Wales and turn your backs on society as it crumbles before our very eyes.
@Jakiboy if it wasnt for the ease of local wireless play and the nintendo games that support it i would really be questioning why i bought a switch. That said my family has been entertained indoors during this pandemic by hours of salmon run, mario kart, zombie army elite, and luigis mansion. But if it wasnt for my lan party room and just the switch itself which can be used on my main tv it would be really questionable. I dont play portable and there has been too many ports way too late in the systems cycle. We should have gotten 720p Pikmin 3 port in 2017 not 2020.
@Dragonslacker1 Same
The Legend of Mario: Breath of Bowser's Fury
@MysticGengar Welcome back!
Never played the original game and Bowser extra looks interesting but it seems to be a short experience.
I'll wait for the reviews to get a better idea about the length of the Bowser content to decide if would get it ASAP or wait for a second hand deal online.
@tourjeff 3D World is far from short. It's one of those games that keeps on going and going and going. Plus to 100% and beat the last level is no small feat. You get a lot of game for your money.
@DonkeyKongBigBoy Where did you get that info from?
Nintendo makes Mario game. I buy it.
So what about the captain toad levels. Are they back or were they removed? Personally I would've liked to see them replaced with 2d like stages like the 2d world mode in mario maker 2
This frankly doesn't look very good. The actual playable space is a few TINY little islands. They're really REALLY bland, sterile, empty environments, much like the rest of 3D World itself.
3D World was such a massive disappointment when they revealed it in 2013 that it single highhandedly caused me to never buy a Wii U. I see that game continues to be a huge source of disappointment: it really looks like this may have started as an expansion to Odyssey but they grinded it down it in order to bring it in line with the nondescript feel of 3D World.
Lack of online matchmaking has put me off, I don't have many friends that play switch (I'm to awkward and antisocial to start making new friends now).
Might pick it up pre owned at a later date, that way I'm not giving Nintendo any money for lazy ports.
So... do I go digital or physical? I love the look of the steelbook but like the convenience of digital...
Looking at the advert for it it looks just like Mario Odyssey or any other mainline 3D Mario game. How is it different?
@pixelpatch I'm happy non Wii u owners get a new game. But it feels like there are not many new games for Wii u owners. I loved luigis mansion though. The ports should have came out between 2017-2019 and we should have had all new content from 2020 forward. Instead I have to ask myself is this the last year of ports.
This is so day-1 for me! I cannot wait. I absolutely loved this game on Wii U & the added content sounds fantastic.
It having online multiplayer means I'm going to buy it now. Was sad the Wii U version didn't, but then realized I didn't know anyone else with a Wii U.....
I was REALLY hoping for a sequel... but I will still replay this on Switch... I just love the mess around co-op feel of the game.
@Darthroseman I really wish they would add online multiplayer to NSMBUD
If Bowser's Fury is a totally separate game, I hope at some point they sell just that on the e-shop. I'd like to play it, but I have no interest in buying 3D World again since I have it on the Wii U.
@OorWullie Trump told me
The friends only online play is the only disappointment here as I don’t know anyone that will be playing the game when I do.
@Advancedcaveman man you are sooo butthurt it's hilarious 😂 loser
@blockfight
Not exactly this is more a 3d version of super mario bros with timed level and going to A from B(flag pole) but with small sandboxes areas
@Jakiboy Whoa whoa whoa, 30 minutes? How the hell can it be that short? I'm expecting 2-4 hours at least...
Now that's more information, because the trailer certainly wasn't explaining squat.
Remains to be seen how long it will be, and whether it will be sold as a standalone too, as every added content to a Wii U port should for those who already own the original.
Would be cool if beating it unlocked bowser jr in the main game.
@aresius I totally agree. Despite it having 3D in the name, this is the closest any mainline Mario game of the last 25 years gets to feeling like a classic 2D Mario game. Very linear with so little depth to many levels it almost feels like 2D level design. And like those old games, there's much more emphasis on carefully timed jumps that you get in other 3D Marios.
LAKE LAPCAT???
OMG GYUS GGEN 6 REMAEKE KONFIRMED!!1!1!
;D
I should consider myself lucky I never played the original, because it doesn't sound like the port is adding enough to double dip.
@johnvboy That sounds like a very -=NEW=- Nintendo thing to do....
I can settle for a Mario-themed Kaiju/Rampage simulator addon, yes.
@NEStalgia,
I suppose they could have done this in the past too, although they assure me that will never do it again.
@WiltonRoots " cave in Wales and turn your backs on society as it crumbles before our very eyes"
I'm in for that last part, where do I sign up?!!? The Switch is going with me though. So are the XSX and PS5.
@johnvboy Only 300 digital copies available. Unsold digital copies will be virtually destroyed 11:59PM 1/19!
@Jakiboy I’m not talking about hard times. I’m talking about the fact modern games take 4/5 years to build, teams of hundreds, and then a team to maintain it post-launch.
All the kids crying their eyes out over the fact they are fewer Nintendo games coming out are missing that this is true of every publisher and every developer. Nintendo’s games are now longer, better, supported over time with updates and DLC, and last for years.
That’s why there’s only been one Halo game this last generation. Why Naughty Dog made less than half the games on PS4 it made on PS3. Why Rockstar have only made 1 new game.
That’s the reality. During COVID, Nintendo and its allies have shipped more games and DLC than any other games maker. They’ve said COVID has slowed them down a bit, but not massively.
This is just what modern games development is like. Games take longer, more people and will be updated post-launch. There will be moments of a lack of full new games, but with Smash and AC updates to keep things ticking over. That’s true whether you’re a fan of Nintendo or Blizzard.
The industry has changed.
@Advancedcaveman The initial beta reveal trailer looked pretty generic and boring but the finished game I actually had a ton of fun with (particularly the multiplayer). That's probably where the game shines the most, still pretty good solo though.
@NEStalgia,
You have both next generation consoles as well, that's just being greedy, well done on securing both, here in the U.K you would have to buy of a scalper on e-bay, and it's not the money, it's the principle.
@Dringo
"Nintendo’s games are now longer, better, supported over time with updates and DLC, and last for years. During COVID, Nintendo and its allies have shipped more games and DLC than any other games maker."
You must be from some other universe where this is true, lol.
I hate Bowser Jr. I'd rather ditch Bowser's Fury and pay $10 less.
@johnvboy Haha, it's not greed if I'm actively using them all!
Hard work and diligence was required, that's for sure! That wasn't an easy trick. No scalpers, but frantic scrambling at the major retailers sites until 3:30AM or so during the PS5 preorder disaster (I had one in my cart at Walmart in that first wave thanks to the tipoffs from people here, and it was gone by the time I got to checkout. Spent all night (and morning) trying to get through the other stores, and specifically Best Buy that let me keep adding it to the cart all night but never got into checkout for hours. Eventually, somehow, it actually went through.
I was better prepared for XSX and was just there literally the minute the preorders went up mashing F5. It was actually painless, other than the stress and the inevitable inability to get it since it was fast enough to beat most of the hordes, if not the bots. Had one quirk on the checkout page but I was in done in 3 minutes. Anyone that tried to do the All Access financing was in bad shape though, the site when fully down right away. But that stress took 5 years off my life leading to that moment.
To all the Sony trolls . Spider man Miles Morales on PS5 Is. 50 bucks and is only 3 hours long. with nothing else to play. at least Bowsers Fury will have Mario 3d world to go aling with it.
I don't recall them saying it was short in the video, but I probably missed it. I am curious however why people are so mad about that, this isn't a new Mario game, it's an addon to make it a little more interesting and more than a port. Don't get your hopes up so much XD
I plan to get this on day one (as I've commented in multiple articles), I played bits and pieces of the original at the houses of friends who had a Wii U. 3D Land is one of the three Mario games I've 100%ed and I imagine I'll probably 100% this one as well, I'm gonna have so much fun with this. ^_^
Bowser Jr. with a paintbrush, lots of water and (cat) shines. Sounds a lot like Super Mario Sunshine to me!
@NEStalgia I had a go on a Series X over Xmas - my nephew got one, nice piece of kit. The loading times are great and the multi resume function is good too, but for me I looked at Game Pass and I really struggled to pick anything to download. I tried Doom Eternal too but thought it all looked a bit too glossy and lost interest in it quite quickly.
@michellelynn0976 I don't believe anyone here is a sony "troll" or a Nintendo "hater". Maybe some disgruntled Wii u owners but that's it. It would be nice to be able to have a thread without words like troll or fanboy being thrown around.
@Jakiboy So what you’re saying is that Nintendo and it’s partners are not updating Smash Bros, Splatoon, Tetris 99, Animal Crossing, Pokemon and more. And have been, in certain cases, for several years?
You’re saying that Nintendo Switch games, like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, Luigi’s Mansion, and Fire Emblem, are not bigger, more visually impressive and, in my view, broadly better (at least as good) as the games that came before it?
I mean, outside of the opinion on quality, these things are just factual.
Nintendo released more titles than Sony, Take-Two, EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Activision Blizzard, Sega... you name it... last year.
Yes, its big AAA teams — the Zelda team, the Mario team — have only done one game so far. But then they did on the previous console.
@michellelynn0976 Spider-Man Miles Morales is not 3 hours long. Took me 25 hours to do the game 100%. Much shorter than the previous one, but I had a hell of a time with it. Genuinely excellent.
@DjinnFighter so glad i haven't played it because this looks amazing. I was so disappointed with odyssey because of how little challenge there was, but at least here there are objectives you can fail. This vid made me go from, "I'll play it eventually," to possible.day 1 purchase. If not day 1, still worth full price shortly after release, I'd think.
Why did they say two times that you can play with two players on one system? Please don't tell me this is a downgrade from the Wii U version
@Advancedcaveman this is far more appealing to many of us that Odyssey, which had no challenge, except where to find stars hidden & i don't want a Mario "critical thinking" puzzle-like game. To each his own, ofc.
@NEStalgia ignore ppl who try to judge u. Unless they walk on your shoes they have no right to call u greedy. Haters gonna hate (especially w/o knowing details, like if u had family members that shared them, how hard they were to get, how much u used them, etc). Someone will always find ways to criticize u for something... They should live & let live. There are far more things to complain about, where actual greed is involved, than a person who has one of each new console. If u had two of each, now THAT would be greedy 🤣.
@bagajr maybe it's just the bowser's fury part? Since it's just the 2 characters? Just a guess, i didn't pay attention to that part because i only play single player...but i did notice online multiplayer, that's nice. Not sure if that was available before, tho.
@michellelynn0976 Flawed comparison. One is a new standalone game and the other is a wii u port with small bonus content. Try again.
@twztid13 haha, thanks, but don't worry about @johnvboy, were cool, he's just giving a friendly jab
@WiltonRoots I had no idea about it.
It seems like a good investment for me that have not played the original.
Thanks for the tip!
@tourjeff Yep it follows the classic Mario formula of reach the flag, but there are tons of levels.
@NEStalgia,
Never noticed to be honest, need to get an Xbox series X though.
@NikHogan I am actually convinced this is a prototype to test new gameplay elements build into the 3D World engine. Either a prototype for what ended up as Odyssey, or for the next mainline Mario game.
It looks like Mario will be the only playable character from the base game in the Bowser mode. That's a bummer.
@iMarkU agreed
@johnvboy Yeah, it's definitely a super nice machine. The good news is it should be a lot easier to get one of them sooner than the PS5, especially in the UK where PS is so dominant. I wasn't drooling over a "Switch Pro" before I got the new twins....now the Switch is starting to feel a bit dated when I pick it up and I admit I'm joining the "I want Switch Pro" camp
Though at this point we're right on time or past due for the normal Nintendo handheld bump so I'm sure it'll happen this year (oh joy, more preorders to suffer through! Only this time with Nintendo's traditional intentional limited availability!)
@Guest88 not . how small do you know that it is? 5, 6, 10 hours? you do not know. nintendo has not said. and by the looks of it . the game looks longer than 3 hours. go away sony troll. it is up to nintendo not you of how long bowsers fury is. not every game can be breath of the wild or xenoblade in length. sorry troll. try again
@michellelynn0976
From Nintendo themselves: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/nintendo-confirms-bowsers-fury-is-a-short-free-roaming-adventure/
Go away Nintendo troll. This was a poor attempt.. Try again
and one more thing Super Mario 3d world only takes about 5 hours to complete 100% . and the game has 8 worlds and is big. so to all you people crying . what is your point? not every game is breath of the wild in length. bowsers fury . THE COMPLETE GAME. will be great and with super mario 3d world. the game is worth 60 bucks.
would you rather it had been SMBU DELUXE. where the only thing you got was 1 new charcter? Nintendo has so many games like breath of the wild 2. super mario odyssee 2 and other games. and Splatoon 3. Mario kart 9. I mean we all know these are coming. bringing games like mario 3d world and SMBU deluxe is a blessing. we are lucky we are getting these switch ports at all.
So you want a xenovlade sized second game, 30 new power ups and 1080 p graphics at 60fps. all on a wii u Port???? I do not think so. if you people do not want these ports, THEN DO NOT BUY THEM. and let the rest of us who want them buy them . do not want switch wii u ports? then play your wii u and stop whining..
@Guest88 They do not specify the length. Try again, plus you get the full game.
It appears if you pre-order the game digitally on the Nintendo UK store you still get sent the steelbook and stickers 😀
@Dringo it is 3-4 hours long. Not to 100% it, no it's not.
@sixrings There are people from Push Square on here.
@twztid13 I hope so. I'm not assuming anything until they officially say it lol
@michellelynn0976 most Switch owners would be fine with the port if it didn't have a single extra, cuz many of us didn't own Wii U. These are the target audience, I'd bet. The people who already played it would be icing if they bought it in ninty's eyes, but the cake is for the masses who didn't play it on Wii U & want to play it w/o buying a Wii U.
@michellelynn0976 No it’s not. The story is about 8 hours, easily. But there’s no way you’re doing just the plot. The character development in the side stories are essential. I love Nintendo but spreading lies about another platform’s (really excellent) game is just fanboyism at its worst.
@michellelynn0976 maybe people own multiple systems... im on purexbox because I was going to get a series s.
