UK chart data is now in for the week ending 14th November, revealing that a number of new releases on rival platforms have pushed Nintendo's biggest games out of those prestigious top spots.
New titles in the Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty franchises have reached number one and two respectively, with both selling better on PS4 than on their new-generation counterparts. Sony exclusives Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales ad Demon's Souls have also pushed their way into the charts, both debuting in the top six.
That leaves Animal Crossing: New Horizons as the highest-placed Switch exclusive in fifth; FIFA 21 is also available on Switch, of course, but Switch sales made up just 9% of the game's total sales this week.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | Assassin's Creed Valhalla |
- | 2 | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |
- | 3 | Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales |
1 | 4 | FIFA 21 |
2 | 5 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
- | 6 | Demon's Souls |
6 | 7 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars |
3 | 8 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
5 | 9 | Minecraft (Switch Edition) |
- | 10 | Watch Dogs: Legion |

Switch still did pretty darn good. All things considered.
No dramas, as expected and the fact Mario Kart is still in there speaks highly of Nintendo games in general. Roll on Hyrule Warriors AOC release day this Friday!!
Huge week for UK retail sales:
1. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: ~144,000
2. Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War: ~127,000
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales: ~87,000
4. FIFA 21: ~32,000
5. Animal Crossing New Horizons: ~19,000
6. Demon’s Souls: ???
7. Super Mario 3D All-Stars: ~15,000
8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: ???
9. Minecraft (Switch): ???
10. Watch Dogs Legion: ~10,000
The launch of next-gen content doesn't seem to have hurt Switch at all. Compared to the previous week, Animal Crossing sales only dipped slightly (-7%) while Mario 3D All-Stars sales spiked by a lot (+40%). Mario Kart 8 DX and Minecraft Switch sales look to be flat or even up week-over-week.
The launch sales of Just Dance 2021 were 133% higher than the launch sales of Just Dance 2020, with the Switch SKU accounting for 89% of copies sold.
Half the top ten the week of a console launch is pretty good. Same with hardware sales. I think Switch is still expected to come out on top over the Christmas period anyway. If only because of the hardware shortfall on the other two!
I would have expected Switch to do much worse than that.. Assassin’s Creed and CoD would have been at the top even without the new systems.
This is good to see. Healthy sales for the new console’s big hitters and Nintendo games still rocking the top 10.
Wasn't next gen supposed to kill the Switch? 🙃
But yeah, living proof that the Switch will do just fine despite next gen now being officially here.
What a strangely negative spin.
Series X/S launched and PS5 games launched last week yet there were STILL 4 Switch titles in the top 10. Mario All Stars saw a 40% sales increase from the previous week.
9% of Fifa sales being on Switch is also a marked improvement over the 2% of launch week and a good sign of third party sales success on the system.
Overall a pretty damn good week for the Switch yet again.
Next week will be interesting with the launch proper of the PS5 and Age of Calamity but I see another strong week for Nintendo incoming.
Surprised Assassin's Creed outsold COD. I thought COD tended to sell way more.
As long as Nintendo ensures the Switch receives a good amount of Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda and Metroid etc), then this console will be competing more than satisfactory against Xbox SX and PS5. Also if decent 3rd party developers use the Switch as well.... Who knows what is possible?? Personally I think next year is looking bright for many reasons.
I just pleasantly surprised that Nintendo has multiple games here. We had two consoles release this week. And look at the games above Nintendo’s. This is nothing to be ashamed of.
This actually is complimentary to Nintendo if you think about it. Sales still strong and fairing very well despite ultra-publicised launch of other tech behemoths' consoles and software
No drama here! This was always gonna happen this week. I’m sure normal service will resume in the weeks ahead. Have a great week ahead everyone!
Well there goes Nintendo's third party support! As usual Nintendoomed! 😜
Well yeah
The 3 most anticipated games of the year on that are the only big games on the new consoles during lunch week gonna sell better than a few older games
No surprise there
PS5 is a tempting prospect but the chances of picking up a console now are just about zero without paying scalper prices.
I think we could do with another mini direct before Christmas showing us a new first party Nintendo title and a Bayonetta 3 trailer just so Nintendo keeps the pressure on.
Its too early, to realize what will become to Nintendo Switch. Next Christmas will be a landmark
Suprised to see demon’s souls is only 6th.
@TheFullAndy,
Yes I thought the article was pretty negative too, the Switch will be still the top seller this holiday season, and the consoles from Sony and Microsoft will as usual be in their own marketplace.
@KryptoniteKrunch If you think about it. The drop off for PS4/X1 being replaced and potentially only a couple million PS5/SeriesX worldwide, means that the Switch pretty much has this holiday to itself.
It's only going to be next Christmas where the Switch is going to need a really big holiday game. (Though I think 3D Allstars will probably spike up towards Christmas).
@Flugen,
It will carry on as usual, of course we do not yet know what Nintendo have planned for next year to continue the Switch success, but it will have a lot of momentum.
@johnvboy
Yep Nintendo now has its own position in the market where it can live alongside PS5 and or Xbox and still thrive as shown here already.
This week's chart really just shows for me how embarrassing the Series X/S launch line up was. Pathetic way to launch a next gen console with no new first party games on the horizon for who knows how long.
Edit: Gears Tactics is a six month old PC port so it barely counts.
@TheFullAndy,
Exactly, the Xbox One X and the Playstation Pro have not affected the Switch, hell they have not even eaten into the core market all that much.
Just think if you are very lucky you could buy a PS5 or Xbox series X for an inflated price on E-Bay, sounds tempting you must admit.
@johnvboy
PS5 will undoubtedly reign the UK market for years to come but the Switch will be right there alongside it.
Personally can't wait for my PS5/Switch combo but won't get my hands on the PS5 til early next year (I hope!). Switch has plenty to keep me busy in the meantime.
Not to sound negative but PS5 launches here (the U.K) on Thursday this week. Having games for it selling a week before it is even out, at retail, is impressive during a pandemic. Hardly an essential purchase if your console has yet to arrive. Good to see Nintendo in the chart, but I feel this week will be more informative.
Where is Pikmin 3?
Granted it is a remake but Demon’s Souls is lower than I expected.
@FargusPelagius
I imagine most of the PS5 games were preordered along with the console and it is just they released ealrier so we are seeing their sales the week before.
I am not sure there will be a massive bump next week to those games as the PS5 release will be so limited and not many will be going to pick up the PS5 in store due to the obvious.
The big hitter next week will be Age of Calamity I reckon.
@darkswabber 6th place for a game that can't really be played yet in the UK is pretty good I would say. See where it stands next week for a better picture.
@beazlen1 nice profile pic. Do you still play 1080 snowboarding now & again?
It will be interesting to see how this plays out over Christmas due to the next-gen console shortages. I can imagine that this is as well as these next-gen games are going to do until more consoles are in stock again. I think Nintendo is going to do really well this Christmas considering they're up against two console launches.
Next week will be interesting, I don't think Age of Calamity will get the #1 spot but I think it has a very good chance of reaching top 5.
@NintendoFan990 I think only Demon's Souls will suffer from the next gen console shortages. All the other holiday games for Playstation/Xbox are crossgen so you can just buy the last gen version and upgrade for free (or £10 in the case of CoD) when you get your next gen console.
@TheFullAndy yeah Age of Calamity is already Top on eshop so chana e are high it will sell well physically too. Alot of Xboxes were sold with the gamepass deal (it is a very good deal) so I can see that messing with retail games. I got mine and literally only had 4-5 that were new(ish) to pick from. Ended up with a game preview game and DMC 5, the pickings were that slim.
Really wanna try out Demon Souls on PS5, looks so awesome!
You know... after all these years, I think it would be great for Nintendo to start thinking about the next-next-gen, and surprise us all with a beastly console in the future
Demon's Souls selling worse than Fifa 21? Big oof
These are the next-gen titles everyone expected to see doing well. Looking forward to playing Miles Morales at some point, the first Spidey was great fun.
@Clyde_Radcliffe On the Wii U where it belongs.
@roboshort they even mention the PS4 version did better than the PS5.
Honestly all I see is basically "other consoles getting brand new anticipated games in a period where Nintendo's offerings simply happened to be more limited or still to come(like Age of Calamity).
I'm surprised the switch is doing as well as it is. The switch doesn't have many basic features. The only thing it's got going for it is that it's portable and you can play the latest Nintendo games on it. Other than being a very powerful portable console, it's not got much going for it. A lot of my posts can be negative, but I speak the truth.
I’m enjoying all the smug Nintendo fans that are hiding their nervousness about their beloved games leaving the top ten. This is rich!
The Switch is no different than anything else. It’s a console that plays games and offers a subscription service, whose success depends on exclusives. Literally the same as any other system, only you can play it while you poop.
Those platforms really are no longer rivals with Nintendo. The Switch is a different thing altogether. The future will be a player having a Sony/MS/PC and a Switch. And I'm legitimately happy to see dedicated, fully developed games succeeding in the market.
I don't know why the next Switch Mario game isn't being released for Christmas considering it's a Wii U port. Crazy!
@Ludovsky Good point.
This has been Nintendo’s weakest holiday season for the Switch by far and it doesn’t really seem to be affecting it too much, which is crazy.
@roboshort pretty much to be honest. Plus it seem like there's still big hitters yet to come only next year.
Honestly, the fact that Switch isn't being utterly obliterated during the PS5 launch is an amazing sign.
And Nintendo hasn't launched any killer software in a while, so...
This holiday will be rough for them. Cyberpunk, Spider-Man, etc. against... Hyrule Warriors? Thank goodness 2021 is looking amazing.
I don't think the console launch even has much to do with it. Other than Demon's Souls all of those games are multiplat with the PS4/One, and no doubt those carried, by far, the bulk of those sales.
I still have no idea how a niche game like Souls only available on a console of which only a few million, tops, even exist, let alone the amount in one country, could be that high on the charts. If anything this chart bodes poorly for video game sales at large in the UK.
@DannyBoi,
You speak opinions stated as facts, when they are only just personal opinions at the end of the day.
Switch is next gen. Wii U was last gen.
@TG16_IS_BAE,
I am not nervous in the slightest, the battle will rage between Microsoft and Sony as always, and Nintendo will continue selling Switch consoles and software, Nintendo's biggest challenge is keeping a steady stream of Switch consoles available.
Watch dogs did just awful 😆
@DannyBoi One sure sign that someone isn't speaking the truth is that they finish their post by saying "I speak the truth".
I'm wondering how many systems switch will sell this month. I've been looking for a switch the past two weeks and can't find one. They have the Lite, but I need the regular one for a client gift. I'm wondering if all the retailers are holding back stock for Black Friday.
I know I am in the minority but the so called next gen consoles do not impress me at all.
It was going to happen when the new consoles come out...that's normal, just like when the Switch first came out, how it jumped. Switch is going to sell this holiday, along with the PS4 and XBONE, only because it will become impossible to find a PS5 or XBOX SERIES NEXT. Switch will be the cheaper with a boat load of games for it, with the PS4 (if they drop the price) selling as well. Both PS4 and Switch have massive amounts of games, so both will sell extremely well. Next year will mark official sales on if the Switch is declining (which I doubt it will), but also, don't forget, that nintendo usually only lets their consoles out for 5 years before releasing another, so by the end of 2021, we'll probably know about a new console for nintendo...and the race will start again. Hopefully, the Switch lasts a little longer, but with the upcoming AA games arriving on the next consoles, and the Switch being underpowered, I see nintendo stepping up and releasing a new console...and I'm sure they've already been working on something.
@JLPick
Switch is in the middle of its lifecycle. Don't expect a successor until 2023 at the earliest.
Black Ops Cold War launch sales look to be underwhelming. Even a huge 75% digital attach ratio will result in the smallest Call of Duty launch outside of Infinite Warfare and maybe Black Ops 4.
To put things into perspective, Animal Crossing New Horizons (another game with a massive digital attach ratio) had a bigger retail launch than Black Ops Cold War.
@TheFullAndy Gotta bait those clicks though!
why would anyone be surprised.
Been obvious for months that the top new games this holiday were not coming to Switch.
Have Miles Morales for Home and Yakuza like a dragon on the GO (Shadow PC). See no reason to buy a Switch game till MH-Rise and Bravely Default.
@Ralizah
Cyberpunk heck yeah, but that spiderman miles morales game, meh. That's aiight, but something like CyberPunk I'd say is MUCH more essential gaming with it being much more ambitious with what it seems to be trying to bring to the table. Along with being much fresher overall. Not to mention that me & millions of others can still play what basically looks like a DLC chapter IMO on our old ps4's.
@JimmySpades
Lol That often times seems to be the case.
@Heavyarms55
Yeah well, you're surely not alone. I legit felt the same way. I found one to be a bit more enticing than the other, but neither so that I needed to rush to get one immediately. Now don't get me wrong, I'm definitely getting an Xbox Series X in the long run, but I am also okay finishing some games up on my One X right now for the time being.
Everyone will do well this coming gen. But if anyone is thinking Switch is going to become irrelevant is sorely mistaken.
As someone who has all 3 consoles i find it really funny how some people on here really need for the other consoles to do badly so they can feel great about their system of choice. You invest so much in a multi billion dollar company that only sees you as a subscriber and consumer. They only care about making money the same as the others. The switch is a great machine but so are the others. I've been impressed with my series x, and I'm really excited for my ps5 to arrive on Thursday. I've watched enough videos to know that the dual sense is a game changer in immersion, and I think we have Nintendo to thank for that. Sony have taken some of their magic to innovate for a change. At the end of the day I want all the companies to do well, competition means better games, so we all win. Oh and since there will only be around 200k to 300k ps5's in the UK by the end of the week, demon souls getting 6th the week before is pretty impressive.
@Rodan2000 Demons souls and sackboy are making me wish I’d tried harder to get a ps5 now!
@Ralizah Hyrule Warriors maybe the lamest "big holiday game" Nintendo's had since WiiU, but as big as Miles sells simply because it's a Spiderman game, I'm not sure a 12 hour DLC sold at almost full price retail is something to consider superior competition.... More popular, maybe, but were' kinda scraping rock bottom on both fronts here.
@DannyBoi
"I'm surprised the switch is doing as well as it is."
"The only thing it's got going for it is that it's portable and you can play the latest Nintendo games on it."
You shouldn't be surprised because you just gave two of the strongest reasons as to why it is doing well.
@papermarioamiibo My first thought.
Strike a deal with Rockstar and Switch will have one more title in top ten all year long. Plus it will help with sales against next-gen mammoths.
I have been multiplatform all my life however last gen I played my switch 90% of the time compared to my xbox one and ps4 pro. Also I play docked most of the time so its not like a portability thing. I am just so much into Nintendo style games. The only games I played on ps4 were Metro Exodus and all the Yakuza games but thats pretty much it. I think this gen I will be skipping Ps5 and Xbox SX and just stick with my Switch. I still have so many games to play on it and I don't feel the need to move systems now. I love the switch so much.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Have to say I am not understanding what point you are trying to make.
If there was one week for Switch titles to drop out of the top 10 with no eyebrows raised it would be this one. The fact there are 4 Switch titles in the top 10 shows how well Nintendo is doing in the UK right now.
Not sure what you are on about with smugness and nervousness.
@TheFullAndy Simply by the general comments, it’s cute.
@Heavyarms55
I can't wait to get my hands on the PS5. I love my Switch but it is not a technical powerhouse and sometimes I do like the eye candy so I have been ready for the next gen of powerhouse consoles for a while now.
The PS5 is a beast and the first party games in particular look stunning on it, even the cross gen games look spectacular. Also the Dual Sense seems like the natural evolutuon of HD Rumble so I am looking forward to that. Also as someone who loves my games running at 60fps I am very excited about that becoming more and more standard with next gen games as I have no problem sacrificing resolution for performance.
My Switch and PS4 Pro will tide me over until I can get the PS5 early next year.
@TG16_IS_BAE
I guess people just see it as comforting that their system of choice is selling well as they don't have to worry about it becoming another Wii U type ghost town. Those years were painful!
@westman98
13 years?!?!
😉
@MicroMatscenes That never will happen, when Nintendo did that they were getting diminishing sales.
@westman98 2033? Are you sure? 16 years? Probably, more like about 2023
@TheFullAndy Agreed, the Wii U made me lose a lot of faith in N, heck the GameCube did as well. I hope the Switch starts to pick back up, too, as a lot of the games that were rumored to show up on it haven’t shown any sign of arriving.
@TG16_IS_BAE
I accepted this year as a write off a while ago. Nintendo clearly weren't set up for dealing with the pandemic (few were) but I am optimistic things will pick up rightly next year.
Even so I would rate their output for 2020 as a solid 7.5 out of 10. Not as good as Sony but light years ahead of Microsoft.
@ok1 @TheFullAndy
Oops
@westman98
Hey it's Nintendo, they may decide to wait that long!
@LordMolecule oddly enough, the Wii U and the Switch are both the same hardware generation, part of the 8th generation of video game consoles.
@TG16_IS_BAE You seem like an unhappy person. Did you lose your job or something? What made you decide to join this site with the explicit purpose of dedicating half your life to spreading your own personal misery here? We get it, you have Nintendo issues. That's your problem, not ours. You are not owed agreement, and this is one of the last places you should expect to find it.
Now I have my PS5 and its glorious 60fps 4K gameplay not sure I can ever go back to Switch’s muddy visuals.
Hardly a surprise though is it? Two major console launches are bound too hurt the big N! Saying that though they're still doing more than admirably on the sales front.
Nintendo, I feel at this point need a new Switch announcement sooner, rather than later. As frankly the Switch in docked mode is definitely starting to show its age nowadays (I personally love my Switch still) but a more powerful upgraded model with backwards compatability, well.. it certainly wouldn't hurt them at this point. They should also put in an offer on Sega (or at least it's IP's) before either off the other two do! I'll pick up a PS5 at some stage for its future exclusives, but as a 3090 user, it's alleged 'next gen' specs are simply irrelevant to me.
Nintendo really, REALLY needs too sort the ***** Joycon drift issues out as well! I'm on my third pair now! And that simply isn't on.
@scoobdoo Oh that's a shame. Bye.
@Kilamanjaro it’s amazing. It’s all I’m rockin with as of right now
@VinniVinni you need to get your eyes checked
@Dezzy the new COD is a few steps down from the last one.
@Mr-Glissando Microsoft buying Sega would be the best outcome.
I keep forgetting that the new consoles are out because nobody in my immediate sphere is getting them.
