Sega has filed a trademark for the name 'Sonic Frontiers', which has triggered speculation that this is the final name of the upcoming 2022 Sonic title.
The new game – which was teased in May this year and is coming to Switch – is rumoured to be an open-world adventure in the same style as Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sega had previously used the name 'Sonic Rangers' for this outing, which may (or may not) be a placeholder title.
In October, an anonymous leaker claimed (via Reddit) that the name of the new game would be Sonic Frontiers – and that was before Sega filed this new trademark.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has already admitted that the reveal of the game in May was "premature" but the team wanted to do something to mark the character's 30th. He has also stated that the title will represent an "advancement" of the series.

@thiz Yeah Exactly! Expectations set to zero!
@thiz What's so bad about it? I enjoyed Sonic Forces so was planning to pick up Colours if it goes on sale on Switch.
@thiz So it's lower quality than Switch Sonic Forces?
Whatever it is, it’s going to be great! It’s sonic after all.
In all seriousness, has there ever been a truly great sonic game? Even the originals pale in comparison to Mario.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Sonic Colours has been patched since release. The Switch version got a patch to stop the major freak out that was causing seizure concerns, don't know what other issues it may, or may not, have. I've got it for PS4 Pro and it runs really well and I haven't noticed any issues so far. It's definitely better than Forces.
I'm just going to say I ended up finishing Sonic colors before the patch (100% to) so sonic controlled like ass for me, Would hate it, if I didn't Love the game so much.
Hope This sonic game turned out good, we have been waiting for years.
What a boring title
No idea how an "open world" Sonic game is meant to work. Especially considering that Sonic Team could barely make levels lasting 2 minutes in their most recent game.
Expectations for a good Sonic game are so low, they’re 6 ft underground, where Sonic should be.
Sonic games are like going into the lottery. Sometimes you win, but most of the time you lose. Sonic Frontier can only be two things: good and memorable, or buggy and dissapointing.
@andykara2003 I'm not sure if this is an actual question but as a Mario fan myself, Sonic has had amazing games over the years. Sonic Adventure (Sonic Adventure 2) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are two of the best titles in the whole series.
remember: just because we're Mario fans doesn't mean that Sonic or any other series is automatically inferior. Sonic's had his rough patch for sure, but hopefully it'll come to an end
@andykara2003 "In all seriousness, has there ever been a truly great sonic game?"
Sure... Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure 1/2, Sonic Generations, Sonic Mania...
Hoping that people finally realize that the problem with the Sonic franchise is not that it never changes, it changes constantly, the problem is that it changes too much.
Every time it seems like the Sonic franchise is finally becoming good again, instead of learning with their hits and misses, they decide to make a game that is a complete overhaul of what they done previously, every new Sonic game needs to have something new that other games never did, a struggling franchise should play it safe.
They can't even do linear stages properly, and they are already trying an open-world game.
@andykara2003 I'm not really sure because I liked Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles when I was a kid but it could be because everyone else in school did. I also remember I enjoyed the isometric spinoff game very much (forgot the title). The recent ones I am hesitant to try since the core Sonic gameplay is not really my thing and, in my opinion, has not aged very well. Strangely the one I remember that I enjoyed the most is Sonic 4 EP1 on the iPhone 3GS. For some reason I can't seem to explain, its really hard to hate on Sonic maybe because the character is just so likable.
@Carck @Octane_st1m @Clyde_Radcliffe Sorry guys, yes I was being a bit annoying & facetious there. I’ve never enjoyed them much, but I appreciate that people rate them. I’m hoping generations gets remastered as I’d like to give that one a go considering the love it gets.
@andykara2003 no worries. Actually I see where you are coming from. I think that gameplay was never really Sonic's strong suit. There's this Netflix documentary about gaming history that explains how Sega conceptualized Sonic to combat Mario & Nintendo. It was built heavily on character design marketability and eye candy action-oriented gameplay.
@Octane_st1m I couldn’t have put it better.
Sonic in the same style as breath of the wild... I laughed reading this
@andykara2003 I played sonic mania, which was free on ps plus, and hated the gameplay despite all the good reviews. I believe Sonic is like Crash: nostalgia based mascots for people who never owned a Nintendo console as kids.
I am very interested to see if the rumors are true with this one. I like most Sonic games to be honest, and I will have never played one quite like this rumored entry. Maybe we will get some video footage of the game in action soon.
@Rhaoulos Haha!! If I’m honest that’s exactly what I think.
The 2D Genesis Sonic games were good games, because like Mario’s games they had their imitators that didn’t live up the same quality, let alone surpass it. So clearly there was a level of design and quality that was difficult to replicate. Now the same can’t be said for the 3D Sonic games, that’s where the wheels come off it
@Carck
Out of interest i played it unpatched, game crashed once and i flew once out of a Level.
The crazy Stuff seen in the Internet hasn't happened, but it was clear that you have to trigger it.
I am not the biggest Sonic Fan, in my Opinion most Games do not play really well, but i had Fun with Colours and i can recommend it to People that want to enjoy a Jump and Run.
The Sheet Storm that run over the Game was way to high.
I like Sonic as well (I'm one of the few that preferred Lost World over the boost-based games), but I feel his time has passed, save for Sonic Mania. Even then I'm unsure about considering it not because I want to disregard the work that went into it, but because it's more of the result of the work of the fans and not really SEGA's effort to redeem themselves with Sonic.
So I'm going into this new game with little to no expectations, that way I'll enjoy it a bit more than if I had expectations
@YusseiWarrior3000 Sonic Colors Ultimate is terrible on Switch. In fact, it’s the reason I haven’t bought it on Switch because of the issues it has.
I would rather get it on a PC. Where it runs much much better
Well at least it sounds better than lame Sonic Rangers. The word frontier does sound synonymous with a huge open explorable world similar to games like Monster Hunter Frontier and SaGa Frontier. Sonic Frontiers with an s at the end hint that it could be bigger than those. Hopefully bigger is not the only thing it had but better gameplay and story as well. We'll wait and see.
So glad all the Nintendo fanboys come out of the woodworks to voice their hate for anything Sonic. If you’re able to ***** on a game before its announcement, then your opinions are worth nothing. Makes it easy to know who to block/ignore.
@rockerztonight1 You can't say that all of them are Nintendo fanboys, if they want good Sonic games then surely they are Sega fanboys too. Also they do had a point, Sonic had been on a downward spiral as of late, as a movie, cartoon, and comic character he did fine but as a game character most of his games fall flat, even those that use to be good. Not only that a lot of ex-Sega devs aren't doing so well either, most resort to making mobile games and some are just brain dead that every flaws their fanbase found in their new game (such as an early demo) had fallen to deaf ears that they still release that game with those bugs and flaws intact and they wonder why people put them on blast.
@YusseiWarrior3000 I am not sure though. Do you have it? How is it on your end though.
I am gonna wait on a discount for colors ultimate
I have faith in this game
1. Made by sonic team
2. They aren't making a whole new engine
3. This is the "start of a new era" according to Takashi izuka he is treating this as tge sonic adventure so like a reboot? Idk but I gave faith.
@Rhaoulos how did you not like sonic 2d gameplay? Everyone has there own opinion but as long as we can agree that sonic 3+k is the best classic game we got no beef.
@358dayswaterson You are free to think there are good sonic games as long as you also admit that you're wrong. It's not a matter of opinion, sonic simply isn't in the same league as mario when it comes to gameplay. Look at other comments, sonic was just a mascot created as a Mario competitor, but never had a good gameplay to back it up. They're just about running fast and failing until you learn the level when mario is just fun to play
