Re: Soapbox: The Switch Online Expansion Pack Is Great Value – If You Love Animal Crossing

WhiteUmbrella

The most frustrating thing about this to me is that, well to begin at the beginning, when Nintendo's paid online first launched, many people grumbled about the lack of features as compared to their rivals ie standard of monthly games, paywalling cloud saves, no integrated voice chat, messaging or a friend list that functions or can be created with the same ease as on rival platforms. While there was no shortage of people ready to defend Nintendo on the basis of their lower price point, there were many others happy to suggest that people should pay even if they weren't happy with the service, because Nintendo would take the money that they made from it and plow it back into improving the service. To be fair, it wasn't actually Nintendo saying this, but it seemed a reasonable assumption at the time, but one that turned out to be overly optimistic.
While I have previously had an xbox live gold subscription, and currently have ps plus, I have never cared for or downloaded any of the "free" monthly games. I just pay for online gaming because it's a paywall, this is where many that prefer physical games are. If there's a subscription for online and you don't want the games that are on offer, then what you're paying for are the social features and servers and Nintendo isn't providing any of that. We get nothing but another fee to pay.
To me, this is just like those situations when a publisher has launched a game in broken condition, and instead of patching it, the first thing they push out is paid dlc. They get backlash and they deserve it. This "expansion pass" has reinforced the idea that, rather than having an intention to improve their online service over time, they consider what they are offering for the base subscription to be just fine and they have no plans to improve their system at all. There is already a template for them to copy, they just need to copy it. All they need to do is imitate what Microsoft and Sony have done, they've already laid the groundwork for what a functioning online offering should be.
Will the Switch fail? No. Can it fail? No ... but there may well be a reckoning for them again come the next generation, with the reputation they're making for themselves with this one.

@johnvboy as others have noted, you run interference for Nintendo on any and all negativity like you're paid to, either that or you're just a fanatic. You're not alone of course, but others are happy to just state their own opinion and allow the natural balance of negativity and positivity to be a barometer of the general consensus. Not you, though. Do "internet minorities" have a particular skin colour, by the way? If I were you, I'd avoid using that term again. It makes you appear ... a certain way.

@TryToBeHopeful "it's likely that a game that gets a poor reception will have a poor youtube response, the other way around does not follow"

In the case of both Federation Force and the NSO online expansion, the youtube videos received a negative response on Youtube before release, which should be obvious, because the video were released before the products were. In the case of Federation Force, Nintendo had already disabled the ability to dislike it before the game even released.
Maybe you should think about what you're going to type, before actually hitting the reply button.

@Grumblevolcano to me, xbox live and Ps Plus aren't more expensive. Firstly, I last bought two years of Ps Plus when it was on sale, probably around 40$ per year, although I don't remember exactly what I paid. Secondly, with only one subscription to Live or Ps Plus, anyone in your household can use the online features on the console, on a separate account. With Nintendo, this requires a "family subscription", which costs more even than Ps Plus and Live at full price.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

@johnvboy Of course, because a large group of people who have no interest in something are bound to have made an exception to their viewing habits in order to downvote it, and created multiple accounts to do so.
I don't really feel a need to sift through your comment history to see if, when something Nintendo did was met with positivity, you downplayed it in a similar fashion. Embarassing.

Re: "I Don't Think The Switch Needs A More Powerful Version" Says 'World War Z' Lead Designer

WhiteUmbrella

@nhSnork Clearly, the possibility of a port that never happened has little to do with one console outselling another, and everything to do with the power of the prospective hardware it is being ported to (or not).
Also, your words "my kind"? Perhaps you would care to elaborate on that. Please bear in mind that, depending on your answer, Nintendolife may choose to ban you.

Re: "I Don't Think The Switch Needs A More Powerful Version" Says 'World War Z' Lead Designer

WhiteUmbrella

@nhSnork There's nothing wrong with my comprehension abilities, but judging from your opening sentence, yours need some work. If you think I can't keep track of the topic, that begs the question, why such a long missive? I still don't see the relevance of the PS2 software being technically possible on the Gamecube, since it wasn't actually on there. That's like trying to diminish the Switch because absolutely everything it has could easily run on a PS5. Don't you ever let go?

Re: GTA Trilogy's Physical Edition On Switch Appears To Require A Download

WhiteUmbrella

The article doesn't mention this, but in the case of L.A Noire the discs pulled the same thing on PS4 and Xbox. They still required a download even though the entire game would have easily fit onto the disc. With this in mind, we can see that putting out incomplete physical titles isn't just a restriction caused by the cost of the medium, it's ideological. They want you to own nothing and keep paying forever.

Re: "I Don't Think The Switch Needs A More Powerful Version" Says 'World War Z' Lead Designer

WhiteUmbrella

@nhSnork DVD is not a "gimmick". Movies are still sold on the format to this day. Also this "None of the games you've listed were below GameCube's hardware capabilities" I don't understand how the fact that any of the PS2 games could have been ported to the Gamecube is even relevant to the PS2 surpassing the Gamecube software line-up. This is a strawman if it doesn't argue against a point I made, and it doesn't.

Re: "I Don't Think The Switch Needs A More Powerful Version" Says 'World War Z' Lead Designer

WhiteUmbrella

@nhSnork Just what I would expect a troll to say. Gamecube didn't share any MGS2, MGS3, Silent Hill 2, 3, 4, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, Forbidden Siren and the sequel, Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 & 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Killzone, Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas but really, if I list them all we'll just be here forever.
Hasn't it been said often enough here, and claimed on Nintendo's behalf, that "software drives hardware"? So really it must have been the software available on PS2 that made it outsell Gamecube so strongly. That, plus Sony having the foresight to predict how important the dvd format would be. I don't imagine innovating online play and including (shock) an ethernet port in later models of the PS2 would have hurt in a time when a certain figure within Nintendo described online play as "just a fad". lol

WhiteUmbrella

@nhSnork "GameCube, one of its generation's most powerful consoles and a wielder of then-exclusives like Resident Evil 4 and Tales of Symphonia, got significantly outsold by a DVD player"

What a troll. The PlayStation 2, the console I can only assume your trolling is referring to, had one of the greatest software libraries of any generation, with some of the most acclaimed and highly rated titles of all time ... and yes it could also play dvds. If Nintendo had thought that dvd would make a difference, they should have included it themselves or marketed the Panasonic Q worldwide.

@Greatluigi No-one's name has been changed. The characters name is now and has always been Cole Cassidy. The erroneus name previously connected with this character was derived from an unperson. Not only does this person not exist, they never existed, and all records now deemed erroneus must be corrected to reflect this. Please remember that to invoke the name of an unperson is thoughtcrime. Please remain in your home and someone will soon be contacting you for reeducation. All hail Big Brother.

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

WhiteUmbrella

@Bentendo1609 Whether or not the commenters are in a "vocal minority" is irrelevant, regardless of whether the commentary is positive or negative. Since you're here on Nintendolife, I'm going to presume that you read some of the articles here, and further that you don't read the opinions of the writers solely on the basis that you believe that the views expressed here are those of the majority. Rather, you read them because their views carry weight, just as the views of commenters also carry weight, weight that is engendered by the proportion of positive vs negative commentary. While not everyone in the whole world is going to express an opinion on absolutely everything, I think it's a reasonable assumption that the divide between positivity and negativity in the commentary will roughly be an effective barometer of the overall view of the community to which the issue is relevant.
To wit: the negative bias in the response to the expansion pack announcement absolutely does reflect a majority negative opinion, one that Nintendo would do well to listen to.
While you wish to claim that these negative opinions can't and won't change anything, two recent examples of a backlash within the gaming community actually changing something are Sony reversing the shuttering of the PS3 and Vita stores, and Microsoft reversing the decision to double the cost of xbox live gold.
So, perhaps you mean to criticise Nintendo for not listening?

Instead of wasting time defending every poor decision that Nintendo makes, maybe you should actually consider adding your voice to the criticism. If you are a fan of the company, you should consider that Nintendo improving their online infrastructure rather than milking their customer base further might actually be good for the platform. For those that prefer physical games and don't even bother with the "free" games on rival services, this new addition adds nothing, and reinforces the idea that the base service will never be improved and will never have a proper friend list, messaging, integrated voice chat, a trophy/achievement system or dedicated servers. Their online would be poor compared to the original xbox never mind the standard of today.

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

@FullbringIchigo comparing what Nintendo is offering to Gamepass is laughable. The Gamepass library has a huge amount of content. Modern releases from third party developers available at launch and all first party titles, including Forza, Halo, Back 4 Blood. When Starfield launches next year, it will be on the service day one for no extra cost. That would be like Splattoon and Breath of the Wild 2 being available at launch.
Most of what Nintendo offers can be emulated in a web browser.

Re: Nintendo Leaker Suggests Pricing Of Switch Online's Expansion Pack Could Be Tied To "Licensing Costs"

WhiteUmbrella

This supposition just isn't logical. If we accept that Sega didn't like the virtual console because their sales on that platform were low, why would this lead to Nintendo paying a high price for games that, on this basis, are hardly likely to drive take up of the subscription? Low demand for Sega titles wouldn't increase the price that Nintendo would pay, surely? Ludicrous.

Re: Nintendo Switch Transfer - How To Transfer All Saves, Games, Profiles, And User Data To Another Switch (OLED, Lite, Regular)

WhiteUmbrella

"Select the orange cloud icon to the right of each previously purchased game you wish to download onto your new console. You will not be charged again for any downloads from this menu."

For me, this raises a question. It seems to be implied that an attempt to access previously purchased games from the Switch e-shop rather than the redownload menu, will or could result in the user being charged again for those games. Is this the case, or has this happened to anyone?

Re: 'Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece' Collection Brings The Entire Saga To Switch

WhiteUmbrella

"Wrapping up all of this content will be the 'Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece' collection, an all-in-one digital package" +
"The entire collection will be cloud-based on Switch" Don't piss on me then tell me it's raining.

Let's be clear. These two things aren't compatible, and this reeks of mandated marketing terminology. First we are fed "a disc is just a licence, so digital and physical are just the same" and now "cloud games are digital collections". It warmed my heart to see the response of this community on the Kingdom Hearts cloud version poll. It was so overwhelmingly negative that the future is looking very bright, in fact one might say with not a cloud to be seen. Cloud gaming is only the future if we accept it. I say no. I would have bought this collection like so many others, despite like so many others already owning it on PS4. No sale.
