What an article...well, mark me up as one of those glad IGA isn't going for the retro style games. I believe we have old games to enjoy the gameplay of olden times (that's why VC is so great). Consequently, I believe game developers should focus on creating new games that utilize current technology and not remakes that try to recreate the old graphics. There are exceptions, but I think those exceptions are few and far between.
My two cents I guess.
And mark me up as one of those who also admires the character designs.
@Star_Wolf While these various mods may not have a negative impact on anyone, I do not think it is right to manipulate any console in a way Nintendo wishes it not to be messed with. While I also do see your frustration and will never say "serves you right" (because it does not "serve you right"), I can't say I think what Nintendo did was wrong. Again, I guess this is just a matter of opinion, but I shall not personally approve of any of these mods.
Wow, such a harsh crowd. While I must admit I can't see this game achieving too many rave reviews, I wouldn't write it off. Just because it is on WiiWare and has a 40MB limit doesn't quite mean it shall be stripped of everything that makes a good RPG. True, the game might be a little simplistic, but with some right gameplay elements, the game can still be fun.
@deadbattery And the people who buy My Aquarium? Should they do the same? Geez, I'm especially worried for people who aren't Catholic...
As for the chart, not bad but I'm surprised The Incredible Maze did not make the list. I realize its probably a poor game, but so far all cheap games have garnered quite a success. Hmmm...I don't think I have this sales thing down yet...
Well, this might be the Suduko game to replace all Suduko games...but I somehow doubt it...
Edit: I also have a hunch that many of these puzzles are just "repeats" of each other; or rather, they have to be. What I mean by repeats is they just use the structure of one Suduko puzzle and replace all the numbers with new ones (1s replace 9s, 9s replace 3s, 3s replace 4s, etc.). It's the same puzzle, you just have a 1 in the four boxes in which 9 was in beforehand.
I don't find either of these games appealing personally. Tetris does look like it can be a blast, but after checking the online manuel, I think I'm fine with the DS version considering Tetris PARTY is meant for a larger group. It just seems my friends aren't quite excited by Tetris, and I don't think online is enough to compensate for that.
As for The Incredible Maze (creative...), I don't see it scoring too high after looking at the video, pictures, and manuel. Still, if this gets even a seven, I might just get it.
Well, I'm more than happy that World of Goo is doing so well. I haven't bought it myself, but that's only because it's too expensive...I kid you Starwolf_UK.
Anyway, I'll be tracking this game's success to see how higher-priced games do on WiiWare. With a larger library of WiiWare games, my pessimisstic predictions are telling me these games won't have as much of a lasting success commercially as games like My Aquarium and DYC or even any $10 game.
Looks nowhere near like DYC to me, but heck, cheers for those who find connections.
I must say the instructional video didn't help my opinion of the game. I wish it had been with the game's "real" graphics rather than stick figures, but what little I did see of the character's animation has worried me. However, considering what this video is, I know I shouldn't be too worried.
What a strange concept, but even if it is remotely like Animales de la Muerte, I'd like to see it on WiiWare. Whether I'll buy it or not is debatable...
I agree with the reviewer's score for this game. The game as a whole is great, but it has two problems: its online mode is kind of screwy and the game seems somewhat lacking. For the first problem, I've played online quite a bit and sadly I've come upon several hiccups (and these aren't just for me, everyone playing also gets disconnected). In one instance, most of the players were stuck walking INSIDE the walls around the stage. Yeah, it was humorous yet annoying.
I also say Bomberman is lacking because it's missing both a single-player mode and DLC. I know the retail version in Japan sports a single-player campaign, but I would've liked even a small single-player mode in the WiiWare version to give something meaningful for players to do in between sessions of mindless multiplayer. As for the DLC, that is kind of a no-brainer for me. Heck, imagine what it could've offered: new maps, new modes, new minigames before online play, etc. A huge missed oppurtunity in my opinion.
Bomberman is a great game for anyone who remotely enjoys its multiplayer, and I am thoroughly enjoying it; it's just not the definitive Bomberman game.
Hopefully this game will actually be good because we need a buyable racing game for WiiWare. It's a pity Animales de la Muerte may not make it to WiiWare though. There's still hope...
@Clayfrd and Twilight Crow If you want to win some easy matches, just play the "King" or "Countdown" modes. The CPUs are ridiculously stupid in these modes. In Countdown, just blow yourself up and pass the clock to a CPU. Most likely the computer won't even try to get revenge. In King, just grab the crown and run like heck. The computers don't even try to go after you. I don't like playing these modes myself just because it's cheap, but hey, if you want to ratchet up that record of yours, go for it.
I am happy to see Orbient and Bomberman so high up on the charts. Hopefully, the other Art Style games will do just as well.
Seems like Final Fantasy is steadily moving down. I'm guessing its price point is slowly going to let it die. No matter its content, I don't think these high-priced games will stay too popular for too long when placed next to cheaper games.
@x.SuperMario.x I don't quite know if you are being sarcastic or not. That malevolent smiley doesn't help me either. Still, something's telling me you're just exaggerating your opinion to make a point. Hope so at least.
As for Strong Bad, this episode--at least in terms of story--doesn't appeal to me as much as the second one did, and I didn't even purchase that one. Eh, in the end, I will be waiting for all the episodes to come out before I pick the best of the bunch.
Ys was very much a game of "buts" for me. The graphics were good in parts, but overall the environments and people weren't eye-popping. The music was fantastic but only until it started looping for the fifth time (unless you're a speed demon, you'll be hearing the song loop many times). The gameplay was unique and made grinding quick, but I couldn't help but wish it had more variety. Some boss battles were awesome to play, but other were just boring. The game took me about 15 hours to finish, but much of that time was spent navigating poorly-designed dungeon layouts.
You get the picture.
I certainly liked the game; I just wouldn't proclaim this as one of the greatest I played in ages. This game is definitely not for everyone, but I think those who have a slight interest in this game won't regret buying it.
For those who need a number to rate this game, I give it a 6...outta 7.5.
I hope this game does well critically. There have been too many small companies that have ruined their image and the image of others by releasing sub-par or worse games.
Well, this game appears rather boring to me, as it does to others. The throwing concept just doesn't seem that enjoyable--even with its multiple modes of play--but if the game does end up being entertaining, hey, that's just awesome for me and everyone else, ain't it? Otherwise, my low expectations will do me no harm.
I'm glad that both of this week's games made it up to the top 20. I have yet to get both, but I can't wait to play them. Bring on the other Bit Generation games!
There's a small sensation in the back of my head that is warning me about this game. I'm looking forward to a good WiiWare racing game like most everyone else, but this one doesn't seem like it is the one that will do it for me. I don't like being skeptical this early, but...well...I'm skeptical.
@Stuffgamer1 I wasn't ragging necessarily on you; I was just contemplating the situation. And yes, I did "bother" to read all your comment before "complaining." I'll admit my comment does seem like it's attacking you a bit, but I assure you I was not trying to.
Hey, I hate this avatar! Why the heck did you do this to me, Corbie? I mean--oh wait...no, I guess mine is still the same...
Wow, what a good week for you guys. I wonder, does anyone remember a time when the Wii Shop Channel had bad weeks? I can't. They must have a genius choosing games!
And I thought this was a press release for the games released on the VC in Europe. Dam wishful thinking...
Well, it seems I sadly might not get to own this game ever again. I probably won't be purchasing an Xbox 360 or N64 any time soon. Heh, I think it's funny how people mention how others should buy two systems so they enjoy everything. I wonder how much money they have...
@Mario64DStyle But we all know that 0.1% usually comes back to bite us in the arse.
Hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised if MM9 also came out on Friday, so I kind of fear for Helix. Against such competition, I can't see it doing better than if it were released alongside another game.
@Kriqz I have often wonder about My Aquarium's praise too. Don't think I'd say, "Sheep love to follow the hate..." but hey, that's just because I have a higher opinion of sheep.
Well, my hopes for MM9 to fail were absolutely dashed. Oh well, it is fun to hope for the impossible from time to time.
Amen to that! It's a pity that Xbox Live is receiving a variation of Meteos and WiiWare isn't (at least for now). If I wasn't a Nintendo fanboy through and through, I'd be looking into getting an Xbox 360 right about now...
From your impressions, it does sound like the game has quite a bit of potential, but I'll still hold out on purchasing the game unless it does become the "Meteos-like" game on WiiWare.
@Mario64DStyle Funny, funny, funny. No, I didn't have a terrible childhood. The "nostalgia style" just doesn't click with me. I believe for our retro needs, we should look to the VC and not our current generation consoles.
