I mean the 3DS is almost all ports and remakes lately, I'm happy to buy new games on it but they've gotta be new (or a Paper Mario 64 port, either one).
From what I've seen readers are too dependent on scores and even reviews in general to make their opinions for them. I've seen too many great games get mediocre scores and the comments saying "Well, I guess I'll have to skip this one" just based on the final number and not at all based on whether or not they actually think they'll like the game.
People have different tastes in games, and are willing to put up with different flaws. For me as an example, I tend to be more patient with games that drag on but less patient with buggy or unpolished games. A reviewer that feels opposite of me may rate a game I like way lower as a result. Then there's places like Metacritic where they have a number that's supposedly supposed to measure the quality of the game with a single number, it's a ridiculous way to look at it in my opinion.
Opinions on games are important if you know who's making those opinions. The idea shouldn't be to tell people whether or not a game is good, it should be to give them an idea as to whether or not the game is for them. The number takes that away in most cases. I suggest watching the Dunkey video on game journalists because I think it does a really good job discussing this kind of thing, and how people are so willing to trust the opinions of people they know nothing about.
Pros/cons are fine but in general I think it's extremely important to know the game profile and tastes of the reviewer. I think a number adds too much bias and pushes people away from games they may otherwise enjoy.
@TheLobster Well, sure, and I'm disagreeing with it. In the same way a lot of other people in this comments section are disagreeing with it. Like, if a reviewer said Breath of the Wild was bad because of the combat, they're gonna get called out.
I definitely disagree with the Trivia Murder Party narrator, my friends and I all thought he was funny. I also don't think it's fair to bump down the score due to the game not appealig to your personal sense of humor, most of the people I've played with never had the same issue. Not fighting the score so much as I think the reasons for the score are a little unfair.
Does the game come with access to jackbox.tv? Since the Switch doesn't have a browser at the moment I think it'd be helpful to have some way to access the site itself on the Switch for the purposes of playing along if someone else has the game. I know phone is usable but I'd prefer a tablet-like device.
Blegh, this poll doesn't really cover my thoughts on VC. Stuff like bundles or a subscription service would be nice, but it's on the lower end of things I care about.
I don't like that NoA releases a fraction of the VC games that other countries get, our library is so small and limited in comparison, for something that's a very big selling point for me. IIRC, even Europe gets way more than we do.
Cross-buying would be nice too. No reason why I should have to buy the same game multiple times. I'd really like the Switch, the Wii U, the 3DS to just recognize when I buy a game so I don't have to pay for it again. I'd be fine with just a discount like in the Wii to Wii U VC, I'm more than willing to spend a buck or two for the transfer. I don't care if it makes the game more expensive or anything, I just want the games I buy to stay on my account.
@TheRealThanos You can't say we know nothing then go on to describe in great detail the things we do in fact know.
You're talking like nobody who's criticizing this game could possibly know what they're talking about, like the only reason I dislike the way this game is looking is because I covered my eyes and didn't pay attention to anything that happened. I know the battle mechanics are different from SS, I also know that they brought back the level select (which I don't like), that they brought back Toad missions (which I don't like), and that the battle system seems to be simple and a loose variation of the sticker battles (which I hate).
I can also make an educated guess that, based on the decisions made for both Color Splash and Paper Jam, as well as the narration on the trailer, that this game will share a lot of the qualities that made me hate Sticker Star. There's no reason why I shouldn't voice my concerns and complaints when the first trailer for Color Splash does absolutely nothing to show me why I should be interested in it (which is by your definition the reason this teaser exists in the first place). Paper Mario has only disappointed me for the last 9 years, am I supposed to just have faith that this game will finally fix it even though the trailer has absolutely nothing to show for it? Am I supposed to believe that they fixed most of the issues I had with Sticker Star (obviously not including the issues that are confirmed to still be in) and just conveniently left them out of the trailer? Why is it wrong to say this game looks bad, but it's totally okay to say the game looks good?
Honestly it's strange to me that you're condescendingly criticizing people for making assumptions when your post is so full of rash assumptions.
I judged my enjoyment of Sticker Star pretty accurately from the very first screenshots, and the Color Splash trailer shows a lot more. Things can change, but unless they change drastically, I'm very confident in my early judgement.
For myself and for many others, Paper Mario games have lost the privilege of a second chance. After the disappointment that was Sticker Star and the lack of interesting characters/settings/story from Paper Jam (a crossover between two series that strongly benefit from all these), it's obvious Color Splash is going the same direction.
I can't in all confidence give a fair judgement for the gameplay, but it's quite the stretch to say we don't know anything about the game. For fans who are interested in the characters and stories of Paper Mario, it's obvious Color Splash is going to be disappointing.
FYI, this page just crashed FireFox for me. I wasn't even in the tab, I just had it opened on the side.
It's starting to work a little better but I'm still getting a lot of lag here and there, and the page takes longer to load than it needs to.
Honestly, the reason I come here isn't for the nice web design or colorful interface or anything like that, it's because this is where I go when I want a list of news. The news is all I care about. This site could be nothing but text and article images for all I care.
In my opinion, the most straightforward and sometimes "bland" designs are usually the best.
Don't know if it's just me but my computer can't stand this redesign. Pictures are taking forever to load (this page as well as the homepage are still loading) and there's a lot of lagginess when I'm trying to scroll down or even while I'm typing here. It's causing a lot of issues for me.
Also not a fan of the top bar showing up every time I scroll up. I'm usually scrolling up because I want to see something I just passed, it's a bit annoying when the thing I'm scrolling up for gets obscured by a huge bar. I usually don't use those menus anyway, is there a way to turn it off?
Besides that the page looks nice. I'm cool with top stories being prioritized somewhat but I prefer being able to see the newest stuff right away.
@3DSWiiUFanatic Yeah, I wouldn't really know since I never ended up buying GtI because I wasn't a fan of the demo. I could see those same issues brought up for Explorers or Rescue Team, but I personally love the games and the difficulty is actually part of the reason I like Super right now. In general there are lots of improvements I just really enjoy. I don't know if there's a demo, but if there is, I do recommend giving it a shot. It does get pretty difficult though.
I'll never understand why Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games always get low review scores. This one's got a 9.0 user score on Metacritic and having played it for about 30 hours so far there's no doubt in my mind that it's the best Mystery Dungeon yet.
Seriously, in every bad review article I see comments saying something along the lines of "well I guess I'll save my money then." I've never gotten this mindset, it's already bad to base your judgements on only reviews, but it's another thing entirely to base your judgements off a single review (no offense to the writer).
If you're in the least bit interested in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, it's 100% worthwhile to get this game. It's everything Explorers was but better. If you're a fan of Pokemon, a fan of the MD series, or even just mildly interested in the title, please research the game a bit more before deciding whether or not it's worth buying.
Yeah, I remember that article. If you want to play it that way: http://www.theesa.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ESA-Essential-Facts-2015.pdf This study is more recent and was created by the ESA, a company which works much more closely with the game industry. The sample size was also larger (focusing on 4,000 households rather than 4,000 individuals), and the focus was on the individuals in these households who played games more frequently.
The gender split in this study is 56% male and 44% female. Less female players than there were in 2014, actually.
I'm not trying to argue there are more male players than female players, because I really don't care about that. But statistics aren't a competition. I don't want my side to win, I want to have accurate information. Even this survey I linked which covers 4,000 households isn't really representative of the entirety of the US gaming population, in the same way the article in this page and the article you linked aren't big enough to 'confirm' females have overtaken males in gaming. You have to consider how many people are being polled, where they're being polled, who they're considering gamers, how many hours a week they play, what kinds of games they play, and oftentimes you'll find that there's just not enough information to 'confirm' anything, especially when the split is almost always so close.
Obviously women play games. They play enough that they shouldn't be ignored. To act like they're not there is a mistake. But when I hear an article saying "MORE WOMEN PLAY THAN MEN CONFIRMED" with a 52/48 split and a sample size that isn't even 0.01% of the US population, I shouldn't be the sexist neckbeard just because I don't buy it.
@momoiiru There are studies out there that cover this pretty well, and I don't doubt for a moment that a lot of women play games (if I were to guess it's probably close to a 50% split), but skewing research and treating it like a competition isn't going to help anybody. With a pool of 2000 people, you could similarly come up with a study that says 70% of players are men.
That's what I'm trying to say here. I don't care what the results are as long as they're accurate, and flooding Facebook and similar sites with skewed or weak statistics isn't going to help anybody.
We need to be looking for good studies, not studies with the results we want.
The YouTube app's crashed my Wii U twice now since the update. Not sure if it's because of the update, but I ended up just switching over to my laptop.
Cross checked the list of Kirby games with the list of games available on Wii U Virtual Console. Removed the titles that are less likely (requires peripherals, Japan only, system not confirmed for Wii U VC, etc.) and here's what I got.
Kirby's Avalanche (Super Nintendo) Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64) Kirby: Canvas Curse (Nintendo DS) Kirby: Squeak Squad (Nintendo DS) Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii) Kirby Mass Attack (Nintendo DS) Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii)
With Wooly World coming out soon, I'm guessing one of them is going to be Epic Yarn. The rest seem to me like equally likely releases except for maybe Avalanche and Mass Attack.
From what I've seen, Skylanders seems to be pretty good at re-stocking their figures. Hopefully their DK and Bowser will sell like hotcakes and inspire Nintendo to stock more of their own.
Looking forward to Zero Suit Samus, Chibi-Robo, Isabelle, and G&W.
@Lithium It's not really fair to compare 7+ years of games being released on the DS with the 2.5 years of games on the 3DS. Especially since you've had an additional 2 years to find any DS games you may have missed during those first 7 years.
I can never really see these (very common) arguments eye-to-eye. It's like saying the comedy movie genre is dying because most movies already have jokes in them. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference, which is something that will never collectively form into one single behavior.
I understand, people have phones, and phones have games. This alone does not make a competition, though. Phones have the impressive ability to emulate tools, but they should be approached like tools of a pocket knife, rather than the tools themselves.
An iPhone can be a watch, but not the best watch. It can be a camera, but not the best camera. I hate wearing watches, so my phone will probably tell me the time for years to come. On the other hand, for someone who doesn't mind wearing watches, a watch may be the better choice for them. It allows for quicker access to the time, and is more reliable in terms of battery life; a watch's battery won't drain when your phone's does. On the other hand, I would rather use a physical notepad than the one installed on my phone, for several reasons: I hate using a touch screen keyboard, a real notepad doesn't run on battery, and I have more flexibility when taking notes (drawing pictures/symbols, for example). Other people may not need to take notes the same way I do, in which case a phone's notepad might be enough.
I have a phone with games on it. I think it's probably safe to say that most people with DSs and 3DSs have phones with games on them. I didn't just stumble into a GameStop one day and accidentally buy a 3DS. I didn't look at my phone's store later and say "Oh whoops, shouldn't have bought that 3DS." I have a 3DS for a reason, and it's the same reason I have a notepad and people still have watches. Because sometimes you need a dedicated tool, and nobody makes hardware more dedicated to gaming than Nintendo does.
We have your precious Keflings hostage, as you may have been able to tell by the attached photograph. If you ever expect to see them again, you will return Banjo-Kazooie to us by the end of the week. These terms will not be negotiated.
I have to disagree with this one. I first played Balloon Fight 10 years ago on Animal Crossing and to this day it's still one of my favorite NES games.
There's also a fair bit of replayability if you take advantage of the different modes available (Balloon Trip, 2-player). Could use a bit more variety, but I certainly wouldn't say it's aged badly.

Re: Pachter Predicts Wii U Price Cut, Feels Nintendo Is Losing "Non-Traditional" Players To Social And Mobile
Patcher can see a lot of things. But can he see why kids love Nintendo 3DS?
Because it has more than one button. Also it has games that last longer than three minutes.
Re: New Touch Detective Game Looks to be in the Works
NO FREAKING WAY WHAT. They're finally making another after 6 years!? I never thought this day would come!
I... I think I need to sit down.

Re: A World of Keflings Is Migrating To Wii U eShop Later This Year
Dear Microsoft,
We have your precious Keflings hostage, as you may have been able to tell by the attached photograph. If you ever expect to see them again, you will return Banjo-Kazooie to us by the end of the week. These terms will not be negotiated.
Regards,
Nintendo

Re: Review: Balloon Fight (Wii U eShop / NES)
I have to disagree with this one. I first played Balloon Fight 10 years ago on Animal Crossing and to this day it's still one of my favorite NES games.
There's also a fair bit of replayability if you take advantage of the different modes available (Balloon Trip, 2-player). Could use a bit more variety, but I certainly wouldn't say it's aged badly.
