Re: PlatinumGames CEO Insists 'Freedom' Would Be Important In Any Takeover Talks

Starcakes

Given that neither Sony ir Microsoft were keen to even finance Bayonetta 2, which already had dev work put in and was a sequel to one of their most critically and commercially successful titles, I don't exactly see them lining up to throw money and freedom at them.

I am wary about tencent tough, especially with the live service nonsense. I'd rather just have Nintendo buy them out if it must come to that, it's not like platinum has even released anything good outside the Nintendo banner since Metal gear revengeance, and automata (which wasn't even their own project)

Re: Fire Emblem Heroes Has Generated Nearly $1 Billion In Revenue After Five Years

Starcakes

@westman98 "none of them are monetized as strongly"

You are kidding right? Both animal crossing and Mario kart are monetized to the gills, much more so than feh which lasted like 3 years with very minimal monetization, whereas tour came out swinging from the very beginning. Out of the three, feh was actually the last one to include passes. All the while being the only one not blatantly aimed at children.

The reason feh succeeded is because it actually adapted the source material into a unique mobile experience that you couldn't find on consoles releases, while tour and pocket camp are just bastardized downgrades from the real thing that no one in their right mind would touch when the real stuff is just cheaper and infinitely better.

Re: Atlus Wants To Know What Games You Want Ported To Switch

Starcakes

@Asthmalxrd I suppose I should give credit to Atlus for adapting to the fact that no matter what they did, their survey would just get hi-jacked by persona 5 port beggars anyways.

Of course we wouldn't have gotten here if games media hadn't fostered that sort of reaction for 3 freaking years in a row. So yeah, sorry, but after seeing the same none sense play out 3 times, I jumped the gun. My apologies for what it is worth.

And no, I didn't enter the survey. But now that you have corrected me, I might, just to try to get 13 Sentinels on more platforms because that game seriously deserves more than it got. Even if I know it's futile.

Re: Atlus Wants To Know What Games You Want Ported To Switch

Starcakes

I must ask, if the survey is specifically addressing the Japonese market. Why is this posted here? Why specifically post that head line with THAT thumbnail, in a site focused on Nintendo, unless you are fully aware you are just going to help flood yet another survey with an endless flood of morons port begging for that seemingly bottomless pit of idiocy, again. But just didn't care as long as it got you some easy clicks.

There IS a freaking western survey people, this LITERALLY doesn't concern us.

Persona 5 was a mistake.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition - A Gift That Keeps On Giving

Starcakes

@Freddo it's story and characters are by far it's best feature, the game play isn't anything to write home about but it admittedly gains steam as you progress trough the game, boss battles are very well balanced which always makes them exciting, provided you don't grind to hell and back (there is a draconian quest to prevent this).

The first 10 hours are definitely it's slowest point for obvious reasons. Tough I can't guarantee you would like it, it really depends on the person.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition - A Gift That Keeps On Giving

Starcakes

@Ralek85 @Ralek85 Presentation is indeed a surprisingly strong foundation for RPG's, maybe it's just my monkey brain talking but all those bells and whistles really make a difference in my overall enjoyment of it. Atlus is indeed particularly good at it, all the little ways in which the camera shake to make attacks feel powerful and satisfying in SMT, how each type of attack has a particular finishing animation which is as brutal as it is gorgeous, the small jingles it plays as you exploit a weakness which is as exciting as it is terrifying when used against you.

Or in TMS where the incredibly dynamic camera angles and erratic character switching make the combat feel way faster and exciting than any turn based game has any right to, or how every 'ping' in a session feels so incredibly satisfying.

I ironically found Persona 5's overall combat severely lacking. The combat angle, the particle effects, the sounds, the animations... it's all incredibly exciting on the first place (like much of the game) but it losses it's luster entirely too fast, and unlike the previously mentioned it's combat isn't anywhere near as deep or good to sustain it for it's 100 or so hours.

I'd argue it's similar to DQ XI in that aspect, I only finished it to see what happens next. But I found DQ XI's story to be much more fulfilling and well made, mostly because it focuses on the essentials of story telling and make the most of it. It is a story entirely driven by emotion and character, which allow it to have all the silliness and charm it wants without sacrificing any of it's emotional depth whereas in P5 it's grand aspirations towards a significant narrative are marred by its fickle tone, it's indecision between being a serious sprawling narrative or a feel good anime ultimately hurts both aspects. You'll notice that SMT and TMS are fully committed to each respectively, and if you played the original 3 entries in the Persona franchise, you'll realize it was once committed as well.

I've rambled enough, my point is that while DQ's combat is admittedly rather drab when compared to most modern rpg's (tough for what it's worth, it's difficulty it's stellar) there is plenty more to it than that, the sheer enjoyment of just wanting to explore the next area and seeing each character interact was enough to make it impossible to drop for the entirety of it's run for me. If your impression is based on the demo, rest assured it picks up steam at gallopolis, the area where the demo cuts off.

Even if at a discount bin, any RPG fan of any capacity owes this game it fair shake.

Re: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Director Reveals It Took Him 80 Hours To Complete One Pathway

Starcakes

@Blizzia nah, being different is hardly enough of an issue to brand it the worst. And regardless of how you feel about it, stuff like the reamped archers/clerics and specially Milla's turnwheel are great additions to the overall design, and considering both are returning in Three houses, I'd wager IS also considers it true.

The worst entry (barring NES games for obvious reasons) is obviously Binding blade. Absolutely ludicrous hit rates, flash reinforcements galore, forgettable characters, the worst Lord in the entire franchise, mediocre growth rates, perishable divine weapons and everything in between. The only semi-salvagable thing about it is it's story mostly due to Blazing blade retroactively fleshing it and because Zephiel was fairly interesting until Ashnard made him obsolete.

Even a solid pseudo FE is better than a trash rendition of the FE experience. And yes, Shadow dragon (remake) is still second worse.

Re: Luigi's Mansion 3 Wins Best Family / Social Game At E3 2019

Starcakes

An award for Destiny 2, really? And I am supposed to take this seriously?

Well, I still haven't forgotten the sea of awards games like Evolved and No man's sky got, this means squat.

I don't trust the VII remake, there is a giant hole in it's development time, and Nomura who is supposed to be it's director (ugh kill me) just joined the project this year and it's supposed to launch early 2020.

I smell some serious bad juju, they are not gonna make a fool out of me after the FF XV fiasco.

Re: Preview: Astral Chain Is The 2019 Switch Game Everyone Should Be Talking About

Starcakes

@Ulysses Dude, Platinum games IS Clover, all the makings of their unique approach to games is evident on each notch on Clover's sadly short belt.

The unconventional mechanics like slowing or speeding up time like a cheap flick, building your own combos or drawing on enemies. The vibrant art stlyles, the amazing action set pieces, the over the top ridiculousness and humor.

The reason why the switch from Clover fanboy to Platinum fanboy was so seamless was precisely because they retained all of their virtues as developers, it was like they never left.

Re: Preview: Astral Chain Is The 2019 Switch Game Everyone Should Be Talking About

Starcakes

@Ralek85 completely right, Automata was a perfectly serviceable hack n slash (at the very least it doesn't fall in the trappings of repetitive combos like OG DMC and GoW), but the rest of the design decisions did not play well into the genre's strengths.

The open areas, lack of enemy variety and the stupid, stupid exp system took a major toll on it's merits as an action game.

Not to mention you spend most of the game as 9S, who decidedly sucks at direct combat.

Good thing the story is as good as it is.

Re: PlatinumGames' Astral Chain To Be The First Of A Trilogy, Depending On Its Success

Starcakes

@Xelha Most studios already account for the possibility of not getting the chance to make sequels, so they generally strive to make each entry stand on their own, even if they got ideas/plans for further installments. You people are jumping to conclusions.

As for the other bit, definitely not. I can vouch for several direct sequels that absolutely nail it. Ogre Battle 64, Megaman Legends 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 and so on.

Most notably, Bayonetta 2 from the hand of Platinum games themselves, which did not only have a significantly better story than the first, but retroactively made the first story better.

Re: PlatinumGames Has Been Doing "A Lot Of Intel Gathering" For The Wonderful 101

Starcakes

It is by far the most complicated game Platinum games has done to date and that says a lot. For that reason alone, I seriously doubt it's ever gonna find mass appeal.

It definitely deserves a re-release however. It's one of the best campaigns I have ever experienced, it's on a constant state of peerless escalation, the boss fights are all amazing and unique, the characters are simple but endearing and the game is constantly throwing new s**t at you all the way to the end.

It's definitely a Kamiya game, reminds me a lot of Okami in the sense that you are sure that the game is about to end or that you've seen everything it has to offer, but it just keeps flooring you.

Re: Review: My Friend Pedro - Totally And Utterly Bananas

Starcakes

So far it's really kicking ass for me, levels have kept everything interesting and fresh, and it definitely feels like the kind of game that only gets better the more time you sink into it so the short duration isn't a deal breaker at all. I see myself beating it in Bananas (that's the hardest difficulty) with top ranking in the future.

I am certainly enjoying it more than Cadence of Hyrule at least.

Re: Pokémon Was The Second Most Pre-Ordered Title At GameStop During E3

Starcakes

Not surprising at all, the momentum of franchises like CoD and indeed, Pokemon isn't gonna stop that easily. Anyone remember "Call of duty: infinite dislikes"?

However, even if they sell a ton (and it most likely will) it doesn't mean the s**t storm will not take it's toll.

Call of Duty infinite warfare and Battle field V were both caught in tons of controversy, and while they undeniably sold a LOT, their total sales were undeniably down from previous titles.

I really hope this happens with Pokemon as well, those lazy bums at GF need a wake up call.

Re: Video: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Launch Trailer Shows Off Shovel Knight Collab

Starcakes

@60frames-please If I am being honest, I have a very, very hard time telling 30 from 60 fps unless it's constantly shifting between the two or, god forbids, it goes below 30 cough any fromsoftware game cough

The harsh truth is that Castlevania's sales never matched the sheer weight of it's legacy, and the franchise was reaching critical mass anyways because the timeline was filled to capacity.

It still blows tough, I would have very much rather taken 1-2 more metroidvanias over the lack luster Lord's of shadows and the just downright trash Lord's of shadows 2.

Saddest part being that it felt like a franchise that still had tons of vigor in it, Order of Ecclesia is possibly my favorite entry because of the sheer number of new ideas it had while polishing the existing formula, not to mention it's art direction and story are also possibly the best in the franchise.

Seeing a team that was clearly still full of ideas and passion get it's wings clipped like that is a tragedy almost as sad as what happened with team silent.

Screw Konami, seriously.

Re: CD Projekt Red "Not Really Cutting Anything" From The Witcher 3 On Nintendo Switch

Starcakes

It'll probably look way better in action in the palm of your hands, but how it looks was never the issue for me as much as the fact that I just really don't wanna replay this game.

Playability was just poor, and I already experienced the story and side quests so the impression has been made and it simply won't be the same thing twice, it never is.

Here's hoping it does well, just to stick it to Crapcom.

Re: Video: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Launch Trailer Shows Off Shovel Knight Collab

Starcakes

@60frames-please Really? Damn, the heck were they doing with this game? It's not like it reached it's originally intended launch window when the Switch was brand spanking new, they had the time to properly optimize it.

That puts a major hamper on my mood, well, I'll guess it will atleast make the wait easier. Hopefully my eventual run on PS4 won't ruin my enjoyment of the Switch version which is the one I got the steelbook for.

Thanks for the clarification free of smug condescension, those are generally hard to find these days.

Regarding the handheld titles, I thought they were fantastic titles that vastly improved upon what SotN stablished, while simultaneously each maintaining a solid identity, which is why it really blows that they aren't talked about more unless you are on /v/ levels of game nerdiness.

Re-releasing them would do wonders for them, but I am not holding my breath because Konami is Konami.

Re: Video: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Launch Trailer Shows Off Shovel Knight Collab

Starcakes

@Synthatron_Prime that blows, but I already pre-ordered so there's no backing out now. Which is a shame, cause I intend to double dip, now I kinda wish I waited for a discount on the Switch version instead.

However, I don't think the frame rate is going to be a major issue , Bloodstained doesn't look any faster than the DS Castlevania games, and those played perfectly fine on 30 FPS.

The resolution tough, that's just lazy.

Re: Feature: Best Pokémon Games Of All Time

Starcakes

@graysoncharles Admittedly, I pulled the LoZ comparation because it was the first thing that came to mind. However, my original intent stands, "but it's hard!" Isn't a suitable excuse by any means.

Animating and modeling is the kind of hard that is tedious and lengthy. I heard that just throwing money at the problem wouldn't solve the issue, but I disagree, this is exactly the kind of issue that gets resolved with resources and timely management. GF knew the Switch was coming, they knew they could not longer settle for the scope of a 3DS game, any competent studio would have prepared.

I heard the rumor that the reason that they are having trouble with the models is because of the...gainaxing/giga something, if this is true, then they really are just incompetent, imagine compromising the core selling point of your franchise for a meaningless gimmick that no one even likes.

Besides, one has to wonder were exactly their effort is going to the point that they can't actually do justice to their own shtick. It certainly isn't going towards the presentation, the balancing excuse is laughable, I certainly don't expect the campaign to stray from what you'd expect outta pokemon, so what exactly is the trade off?

When Sakurai pulled the plug on trophies for Smash no one batted an eye because it was obvious they were putting a lot of work into the graphic overhaul and balancing of the game. This Pokemon is getting nothing in return for the compromises that were made, and the game is 60 bucks to boot.

I also tire of "gamers" whining about every little thing, but this time, I am just happy GF is finally getting called on its bullshit.

Sides, this is justifiable whining like the whole playing with friends debacle with Mario maker. This isn't people arbitrarily bitching about swords in a certain fighting game.

Calling the let's go games glorified 3DS games is being overly generous, and downright disrespectful towards the 3DS games. They are glorified cell phone games with a 60$ price tag.

Re: Feature: Best Pokémon Games Of All Time

Starcakes

@graysoncharles So what if animation and modeling is hard? Game development is in general is hard, you don't see LoZ delivering a mediocre experience and then saying "but physics engines are haaard"

All that pitiful excuse managed to do was really highlight just how much of a mediocre studio game freak really is.

If they can't handle the work then they should have just outsourced the grunt work, but that would take money, if Game freak hates something more than effort it is probably losing money.

I wouldn't even care if the work they already put in was actually good, but have you seen what they have? It's a glorified 3DS game. Characters are still expressionless mannequins and the Pokemon are just a few steps from just T posing as they attack.

I don't even care about the game itself, I denounced Pokemon around 3 gens back, what bothers me is the sheer Pokemon privilege in display. At least other soul less big Buster's in the industry like call of duty make an effort to look pretty, game freak can't even be bothered to do that much.

Then again, maybe it's the fans fault for expecting any better from a studio so lazy it makes valve blush. Sides, they were the ones that made em lazy in the first place.

Re: Video: Here's How The Witcher 3 On Switch Compares To The PS4 Version

Starcakes

@graysoncharles Shelling out and extra hundred bucks for my already expensive system doesn't sit well with me, especially when i have no less than 3 different systems.

I guess that's my problem, but what really annoys me is that not even physical games are a reprieve from this madness, most PS4 games i own are basically "keys" to download the rest of the game. I thought the Switch was the exception, but Crapcom games were a wake up call.
