It's official: Tetris 99 is receiving another update, but it's not for the faint of heart. Version 2.0 adds Invictus mode and can only be played if you've achieved Tetris Maximus status – which requires you to get first place at least once in the game's traditional online mode.
In addition to Invictus mode are new daily missions. When you clear these missions, you'll acquire in-game tickets which can then be exchanged for a variety of custom themes. New player icons will also be added.
Apart from this, a new wave of content is coming for players who previously purchased the Big Block DLC. Here's the rundown, courtesy of the official Nintendo PR:
In 2P Share Battle mode, share Joy-Con controllers for a two-player game against each other and the CPU. In Local Arena mode, friends can get together in person to battle via new local wireless multiplayer.
The version 2.0 update and new paid DLC for Tetris 99 will launch tomorrow on 5th September.

The new themes are really welcome! And I can say I have indeed gotten first place! ... Once!
This is a great game, I play at least a round or two almost every day!
Excellent news. Tetris 99 is a blast. And i’m glad it’s getting a lot of support.
Tetris 99 is slowly becoming one of the better Tetris games out there. The addition of more themes, missions, and gameplay modes is really cool.
Stoked about all of this! Except Invictus mode haha -
As much as I’ve loved the game, the customization has been extremely barebones (albeit the Maximus Cup themes which I’ve loved). It’s great that they’ll be adding more skins and icons and the daily challenges will keep me coming back. Bought the Big Block dlc so I’m ready for that local multiplayer too!
So I'll never play invictus mode then lol
Sounds like a cool update, I'd love to get my hands on that Mario theme
Sounds like this already addictive game is going to get considerably more engaging.
Jeez, the Switch is insane! There's about $240 worth of games I want just in the top portion of the recent releases section of the eShop! I can't believe how many good games are coming to Switch. It's crazy. And yes I want the cartridge of Tetris 99! It is in my top five Tetris games ever, and I love Tetris. With Mario and Zelda themes, this will be standing tall over Tetris DS, which was no slouch with it's classic Nintendo music and themes and gameplay modes. I can't believe Divinity Original Sin 2 just came out. If it runs well I might end up playing that game on my Switch for months!
As NSO is coming to it's anniversary, I've been looking at getting the retail version of Tetris 99 to get a (slightly) cheaper second 12 months plus the DLC. It's great for a quick couple of games but I wouldn't want to have to keep swapping cartridges all the time for it, so does anybody know if you need the cartridge to play it or once it's been plugged in once it recognises that you have the DLC and don't need it anymore?
The game is too hard. I got a win when it first released but now have trouble breaking the top 50... Seems I get attacked by 10 people all at once for no obvious reason and not manually selecting an opponent means I now never get KOs.
I think the best I've ever done is third place. Maybe second? What time of the day do the worst players tend to log on? 😄
I used to be sour with this game back then since its release, but now...I think I'm starting to warm up to it
@Ralizah I dunno. I think it's great to see the latest content coming to 99, but I think it still has long ways to go to becoming a "decent" game for me in terms of modes and content.
Weak paid dlc compared to the free update. It's a head scratcher why they'd have a physical edition with a year switch online.
I'm glad to see them adding some customisation and unlockables. That's what the game has been really lacking in till now. Now I have a bit of incentive to play.
Looking forward to the new modes. I've only won 10 out of 155 matches.
I sure hope they add a sprint mode or 50-75 line mode or something. The 150 line mode is kinda nice for when I just want to play some solo Tetris but I can't even get to 100 most of the time, it would be nice to be able to set some high scores and not have to play for so long.
@JayJ Tetris 99 needs more modes and content in general, but what's coming now is a bit of a good start.
@StephenYap3 Yeah it shows how the developer is dedicated to continually adding new content over time, and having single player content in general has made this my go-to Tetris game already. Still, I would really enjoy a solo quick play mode more than anything.
Will this be included in the retail copy?
@Moroboshi876 Yes.
No invictus mode for me
I won 244 out of 700 matches, so bring it on
@Heavyarms55 How the hell do you manage that? I just get swarmed and smashed off the screen ijn a literal two seconds once im anywhere below twenty.
@YANDMAN Practice, patience and not a small amount of luck. When I play I always have it set to attackers too. I'm pretty defensive like that, and you can kinda smack them right back harder than they hit you sometimes. I've actually gone from no medals to full medals instantly before.
Invictus mode will probably stay out of reach as I only managed second and third once each. Pretty sure most of that was pure luck as I generally place 30-20th.
@Ralizah It already is one of the best Tetris games. Tetris 99, Tetris Effect and those Grandmaster games.
@Heavyarms55 yeah i usually set to Attackers too, but still it feels like you get ganged up on and it's just too much to fend off. I shall keep on trying.
@YANDMAN Sometimes that just happens. That's the luck factor. I've ended up with like 10 people on me when I'm still in the 80s or even 90s and get slammed in a few seconds, leaving me just sort of dumbfounded and wondering what I could possibly have done differently.
Still no way for two players to play Online using one system? Shame.
@Heavyarms55 This is exactly what i experience often. I played a couple of nights ago and after three rounds i never made it out of the 80's. each round lasted literaly about a minute.
I always liked Tetris on the Wii I believe. Maybe Tetris party? I like the one where you build a path up for this little guy to reach a flag without crushing him and it also had a mode where you guide a block thru a series of narrow spaces almost like a vertical shoot em up.
I've gotten 2nd place multiple times, but no 1st.
@YANDMAN A little beginners trick I can teach you is to take it very slow in the beginning, what I do sometimes is just let the first few tetris pieces drop down at their own pace, once the first 10 or 20 people go you can start to speed it up and take it more seriously, but if you try to play fast at the beginning you usually make yourself an early target.
@Heavyarms55 Honestly playing Tetris 99 is a lot like playing Poker in the sense that skill can only get you so far. Ultimately a lot of luck factors play into your success, and how your competitors approach you can make things unpredictable. That is unless you are some kind of crazy Tetris master, but even then it's a lot like being a pro poker player where they can still get bad hands dealt to them and opponents who know how to take advantage.
@JayJ Ahhhhhhhh that makes a lot of sense, awesome thank you. Admittedly i do the complete opposite, i always aim for a Tetris straight out the box.
