It has been confirmed that Overwatch Legendary Edition is indeed coming to the Nintendo Switch, with the news coming during the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast. It will launch on October 15th in North America.
Blizzard has previously said that it wasn't against bringing the game to the console, and the unexpected appearance of an Overwatch-themed Switch carry case on Amazon pretty much sealed the deal.
Here's some PR:
Overwatch Legendary Edition for Nintendo Switch will be available in a retail version and digital version via the Nintendo eShop for a suggested price of $39.99. Both versions come with 15 bonus skins for a range of heroes to kick-start players’ collections, as well as a three-month Nintendo Switch Online individual membership so players can jump into action and start battling alongside, and against, their fellow Nintendo Switch gamers immediately.
Players who pre-purchase Overwatch Legendary Edition by the game’s October 15 launch will also receive the Noire Widowmaker skin. In addition, Nintendo Switch players who log in to Overwatch by December 31, 2019 will receive a bonus Golden Loot Box containing at least one guaranteed Legendary item.
It's worth noting that while Overwatch is getting a physical release, all that will be in the box is a download code.
Originally released on PS4, Xbox One and PC back in 2016, Overwatch is a team-based online shooter which pits two teams of six players against one another. 30 different characters are available to play as, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Like Fortnite, cosmetic rewards are gained over time.
Since its launch, Overwatch has proven to be especially popular on the eSports circuit and many of its cast of well-rounded and memorable heroes have become famous video game icons in their own right.
While the online nature of the game may not sit perfectly with the portable nature of the Switch, genre rival Paladins is already available on the console, which proves the format works – even on a hybrid system.

Yessss my fav game of all time ... I played this game everyday for the past 3 years ... spent thousands of hrs playing this !! Nintendo switch version will be lovely on the go
Can't say I'm too hyped, game got a bit stale on PC
I'll end up getting a third copy when the price is right
Correction: 31 characters with the release of the latest hero a couple of weeks ago.
Great news for fans of the game. I find it highly overrated though. I wish it was a single player game or co-op game instead.
The design, characters, and world just screamed out to me when it was announced. Once the game was revealed as a VS multiplayer game only though I instantly lost all interest.
Can Blizzard just start releasing CG movies based on their games in the quality of their cutscenes already?
Good news, now it's time to act for Activision with their Call of Duty and this genre nicely filled on Switch.
To much love... The only game I play on ps4... And its here
First and favorite announcement of a great direct, day one for sure.
Had to happen eventually! And glad it did!
We already knew because of the leak, but I will be all over this! Day one!
@baller98 so no physical cartridge? welp, I will just order the box then....
@Swoltacular @Starburst @Heavyarms55
Day 1 gang
As someone who played it on the PC (and I only got it within the past year or so), I would love to know if my user data from the PC version can carry over to the Switch version and vice versa.
@lifepsychedelic Well, I guess that's okay, considering I never really got far in the PC version of the game as it is. I try to play it every now and then, but a lot of times, I either don't have time or I forget to play it.
Plus, having to turn on my computer, log into said computer, then open up the game and log into that kind of turns into a chore, so maybe the Switch version will be different in that regard.
Plus, being able to take it with me on the go is a plus. Even when playing on a portable laptop, it's just not practical to play.
@lifepsychedelic Tbh that will be a hard pill to swallow for any prospective buyers that have played elsewhere. I think cross-play would be problematic, but I wouldn't imagine linking accounts for cosmetics would be a bad idea.
Hardest of passes, they couldn't even be bothered to add some Nintendo skins.
I'll probably get it eventually, but it's definitely not a priority until they make skins account-bound. Hopefully that'll be one of the big Overwatch-related announcements at Blizzcon this year.
Also the lack of Nintendo-themed skins is a missed opportunity for sure.
@Xaessya Can I join the day 1 gang? Already got it preloaded also fun fact already own this on Xbox but it’s actually cheaper for me to get the switch version than pay for Xbox Online
@Starcakes They added motion controls at least, and have they done exclusive skins before?
Damn that the skins and the Nintendo Online deal made that price worth buying another copy for the Switch. Time to dust off Trashmouse
@SimplyCinnamon53
Sure can~
Having mine pre-loading now. Really wanted that Widow Noire skin I missed out on last time and I will play it alot more on my Switch.
Hope see some of you guys there!
D. VA MAIN GANG WHERE YALL AT
@DJKeens
I’m not sure what the anniversary modes even are. Is it anything like a solo experience? The game isn’t bad by any means, it’s just not what I wanted after seeing the initial announcement.
They can’t please everyone, so I’m still glad this is coming to Switch for everyone that wants it. Besides, this is just more fuel to add to the fire that is EA’s stance on avoiding the Switch.
Quite excited to finally play this.
"It's worth noting that while Overwatch is getting a physical release, all that will be in the box is a download code."
So it NOT getting a physical release is it? Nintendo Life should be calling out the publishers on this.
@Starcakes I am completely shocked by this actually.
Also, must be trying to maximize profits from
$40 price tag, this game isn’t really that big a file on other systems. Tho, I think they are doing people a favor, games like this should be installed.
Buying a code in a box is like going to the post office to send an email.
@Dustopolis Also prevents used sales so people have no choice but buy it new meaning they will profit more
@hadrian that’s a very good point.
I've had my fair share on PC and the comminity can be quite toxic, but it's nice to have for Switch Owners who never played Overwatch. Plenty of hours of fun to be had.
While not a player myself, I know quite a few, and obviously I'm interested in the technical achievement that this is bound to present. :9
@DJKeens EA is a perplexing entity from the gamer perspective. They survive completely on their licenses. That said, I am shamefully optimistic of Respawn’s Star Wars game. Terrible fate of that company to split off Activision only to be bought by EA 🤷🏻♂️
No no no no no no no no no no
Especially the code in a box, NO!!
I think a new name needs to be thought up for 'a code in a box'. To call it a physical copy is a bit of an oxymoron. Maybe just call it what it is, a code in a box.
Well that saves me a trip to the store or waiting for a delivery.
Code in a box is really dumb.
Stop calling digital releases physical already.
Nope. Just nope. They couldve fit it on a card, they couldve given us an offline PvE mode. They could've had my money.
Sorry Blizzard but if you can't do a physical release correctly then I ain't buying your game just like how I would never buy Wolfenstein Youngblood.
People still play this game?
Meh it never grabbed me on pc and that hasn't changed
For online-only game it is normal to be just a download code.
They probably do this for the shelf space for marketing.
Nobody need Overwatch cartridge come to think of it. Except to save on some storage? And then they redo the whole code like many other games do it you don't even use the code on the cartridge.
Problem for me with no cartridge being released as my 2 kids and I have a switch each. I buy everything I can physical so we can share.
It's my code in a box!
My code in a box, babe
If all your getting is an code then don't announce you can buy the game in an store
I’ll double dip. Best multiplayer shooter in years for me. Guess downloading it will be my only option. I chose to download it on my Xbox One, having the 2TB version makes downloads a much easier option to consider versus the 400 GB on my Switch. I was really starting to love buying physical again.
Shouldn't it just be called a retail version then and not physical??
I was planning on buying this digitally anyway. Overwatch is a good game to just bounce into every now and then.
@DJKeens
So kind of like a horde mode? That’s cool. Maybe an eventual Overwatch 2 will add in a solo mode. I’m not counting on it, but I also know when I’m not the target audience of a game.
The World could always need more heroes!!!
It's not surprising that the game is just a code in a box. The XB1 and PS4 versions have discs but it's like 1KB (not a typo) on the disc with about a 30GB update hence making the discs absolutely pointless outside of being able to sell the game when you're bored of it.
Will I be able to access my skins from the pc version? If there is a battlenet login I am assuming I will be able to.
@DlSPOSABLEHERO I buy digitial exactly by that reason, I have the three accounts in both consoles. So every-time I'm not playing a game from a specific account, the other can play it, without the hassle from sharing cards. Having more than one accounts to buy the games, helps sharing the games, since you can play the games from the other account.
Step 3: Put your code in that box.
@BarefootBowser You know, I never measured the data being used with Splatoon 2. I imagine it's low, even if using the LAN adapter.
In any case, I've never had issues while using the LAN adapter in Splatoon 2 (or any other game for that matter). The only issue even when using a wired connection is well-known: Other players disconnecting. Constantly. Usually on my team too, which is always fun. xD
This is lovely news; I’m going to add that to my list when I get the time.
I already got the PC version that I used to play all the time but the toxic community turned me off from playing again. Also starting up my PC and hoping that my Steam controller setup with motion aiming (can’t play Keyboard & mouse style) will work was also a downer but not much compared to the 1st point.
Almost......but I will buy no game that only has a code in a box. I almost dont even want to buy games that aren't all on a card.
@BarefootBowser Ahh, OK. I think I read (Reddit, maybe?) someone successfully using their phone to play Splatoon 2 while out and about.
Hard pass. A code in a box? How can people even encourage such Anti consumer practices?
The people that buy this fake physical release are creating a problem and telling third party publishers you're ok with empty boxes sold with a piece of paper.
So... Tracer is the next Smash fighter?
A bit disappointed about it being another code in a box, but at the same time it makes a bit more sense for this game compared to others. I'll definitely be swapping out my copy of Overwatch PS4 for the Switch version, because now I can actually get the Noire skin. But since it's a code in a box for physical I plan to just buy straight digital, which is rare for me on games like this.
It’s a code in a box!
A code in a box, girl
It’s a code in a box!
A code in a box, babe 🎶
Would have hoped for a lower price but I'm still gonna preorder. Doubtful I'll put as much into it as I have with Paladins but I'm very excited to give this one a spin on the Switch!
I want pokewatch on switch! Since EA won’t bring bring PvZ to switch I think we should just make one with Pokémon instead!
