Re: Review: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (Wii Virtual Console / NES)

SnackBox

I just finished this game this morning and boy howdy was it a stinker compared to the first (which I finished last month). Playing without a guide would be a curse indeed! Broken hints, enemy design/ placement to obscure directions. People say the sound track is great but there’s only about four that you hear for the entire game (thankfully they are catchy). And Dracula’s castle was a huge let down and a extremely anti-climatic. Every “boss” if you can call them that is a cake walk (compared to the nail bitters in the first). I think this was designed as a secret sharing game for friends, but that said the fact that you almost require a guide to not aimlessly walk around harms the overall pacing a lot.

5/10 is fair but I can see how some people would love the world this one creates, the npcs help flush out the world no matter how cryptic they come across.

Time for the third!

Re: Feature: Every Pokémon Game Narrative, Ranked From Best To Worst

SnackBox

Yeah SWSH story was non-eventful. Everything was left to the adults to deal with and you get snippets of how the land came to be but honestly it didn't have any staying power. Doesn't deserve to be on this list so somewhat accurately placed.

I suppose Team Rocket's story continued in Sun & Moon which helps, but that's post game and while people hate on the excessive hand holding that game has I don't think it detracts that much from the story, if anything, it hurts the pacing a tad. That said, Lusamine's character had a better arc in SUMO than USUM.

Re: Review: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl - A Middling Pair Of Remakes

SnackBox

Graphics are a bummer, over world is subjectively better but kinda goes against the ‘faithful’ side of the remakes so I’m happy they are restricted to underground.

I’ve been following the leaks pretty heavily too and I gotta say I’m rather impressed with how ILCA have performed, knowing how creatively restricted they have been to deliver one of their first bigger budget games and their attention to detail is pretty great especially when it comes to trainers and their moves/ items.

Of course we could have had platinum remake and all would be well but with their time limit and what they delivered I think it’s worthwhile not being immediately dismissive of what they’ve achieved.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Please Retire The Phrase 'Lazy Devs' Already?

There is a video I once watched which helped me understand the game dev's side a little more, whether or not that constitutes as an excuse is irrelevant. Anyway, because of the enormous success Pokemon had early on, spawning an explosively popular trading card game, anime, toys and the games it's become a bit of a race for the way TPC runs. To sum up that video, It's a business model that Gamefreak have been struggling to keep up with to release products matching up with the continuation of the TCG and Anime etc. In the same way Assassin's creed and COD began to release yearly, something is sacrificed and that's usually the quality of the product. This machine that churns out Pokemon products has done well to keep going but it seems the gaming side has started to slip behind...yet sales have been ever abundant so I'm not so sure it's a huge issue for TPC to address yet. That's my take, based on that video for the life of me I can't recall the name of.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Mario Party Superstars

SnackBox

Gamespot's review was pretty bad to read.
A lot of these reviews aren't really great aren't offering me the info people need to make an informed decision to purchase games.
What control options does it have, online breakdown, mechanics. Some stuff is covered albeit glossed over in parts.

Re: Review: Mario Party Superstars - A Party Most Hearty

SnackBox

I'm glad this doesn't add any new gimmick like Ally phones and unique dice. They kinda wrecked the playing field, certain characters were objectively better than others.

It would be cool, harder to implement maybe, if each board operated with the Mario party mechanics it was derived of.

Eg. Capsules on a MP5 map, costumes on a MP2 map.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

SnackBox

Didn't Super Nintendo games cost $50-$60 at launch?
The real question should be...What makes a game valuable?
Not the best example but most fighting games can be 'finished' within an hour to see a credit roll, but the replay-ability is there. Most metroidvania games have a focus on speedruns, Metroid itself usually emphasizes repeat playthroughs.
I don't think it can be purely pinned solely on the length or graphics. Quality polish, legacy, enjoyment etc. all play a part in a game's value.
Yes, Nintendo can charge whatever they want and yes, the consumer can choose to buy at that price or not.
If the game ends up being a masterpiece and praised...the price will reflect that. If not, then it'll be a bargain buy like Other M.

Re: Soapbox: Without A Dedicated Handheld Division, Is Nintendo Less Weird?

SnackBox

Not sure if this has been mentioned but now that we have one console from Nintendo...It hits so much harder when they are releasing 1st and 2nd party games so sparsely...the support they give one console hardly makes up for when we juggled two of them.

Also sidenote: Where has Doug Bowser been? Haven't heard from him in a loooong time.

Re: Video: Pokémon Fan Reimagines The Diamond And Pearl Remakes As Full 3D Games

SnackBox

@VoidofLight I'd counter that for the highest earning franchise in the world, realistic expectations should be set extremely high, they have the experience and monetary is a non-issue. However, the only problem I see which people blame them for being lazy is they don't have enough time, trying to keep the TCG, anime and games on a roll is a balancing act that will lead to sacrifices in some areas.

The art style is subjective but people don't like to lie down and accept mediocrity when they've tasted better in the past.

And with Panic Button's recent releases, they've proven that games that far outpace the quality of that trailer are indeed possible.

@Clod Hear, hear! Definitely too soon to throw in the towel completely...I think people have just jumped the gun to hop a negative bad wagon...though on the other side of the coin...game freak really could have communicated their omissions or general plans and come across a tad more transparent.

Regarding ORAS, I think there's still some missed/ rushed polishing that game really could have soared from and garnered the same quality HGSS and FRLG h=still have today.
